How to Move Forward – Courage, Fear and Accountability

Step Into A Clear Vision

Before you can accomplish anything, you must set your vision and make the decision to step into it – and stepping into it is the essential part of the process. It is not difficult to come up with a place you would like to be or something you want to accomplish, but the decision to follow through is a whole different story. By simply stepping out of your comfort zone and following through with the process, you are ahead of 80% of the population that will never have the power to follow through because they are afraid to do it. Once your vision is clearly set, all that has to happen is to decide to go for it – to actually follow through with reaching your goal.

Find Fear

When you choose to step out and do something that you have never done before, expect fear to show up because it will. It is natural to feel an internal resistance because your mind tells you to run to safety. Your inner story, your subconscious, says you should turn around because you are headed to a place that does not feel safe, and you are doing something wrong. This is the first hurdle; you must overcome the first level of fear. You do this by telling yourself that these feelings are not true; this new vision will take you further than you are right now, and it will lead you to a better place: a place where you have set your vision and your goal.

Find Courage

Fear is conquered by courage, and courage is found in a firm belief that the vision you have for yourself is the right one. Courage happens when you take that step toward your vision, and you are all fired up – let’s do this! Unfortunately, it will take more courage than the first step. When things are getting complicated and you start to lose sight of the purpose, the second level of fear comes in to try and take you back off the path. The way to override this old programming is to execute the plan. A goal without action is simply an idea, not a goal. Use your courage to commit to the execution of your plan.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Once you step into the second layer of courage to commit to executing the plan, accountability becomes your key to success. When you begin to hold yourself accountable to the vision, commit to overcoming the fear, and push yourself to move forward and follow through with the actions to achieve your vision – you have found the recipe for success. That is precisely what has to happen to reach your goal. True accountability occurs when you learn to hold yourself accountable, and you don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. Self-accountability is something you must master; otherwise, you will continue to loop in the exact same results.

At the Growth Architect, we want to help you breakthrough with tools and techniques to make your vision happen. My job as a strategist is to help you understand how your mindset, growth, and business strategies work together. That’s what I do! If you want to hear more about making bold moves toward facing fear, finding courage, and developing accountability, then watch my video–let’s grow!

The Secret to an Entrepreneurial Mindset

Whether you are an entrepreneur or not, there is no debate that developing an entrepreneurial mindset will impact your business and personal results. Having an entrepreneurial mindset is vital to your success because learning to think like an entrepreneur allows you to focus on your goals and challenges and continue to push through.

Imagine the Possibilities

Entrepreneurs always begin with the idea of what can be accomplished – the ability to imagine the possibilities. This is the number one quality of the entrepreneurial mindset because a vision of what the future could look like, regardless of the current state, is not something that everyone can do. When this vision is communicated with others, they often resist it with attitudes and words of negativity that revolve around the thought that these ideas are not capable of happening. They see the vision as “pie in the sky” and ridiculous. The person with an entrepreneurial mindset considers the problems and the challenges and sees all of the potentials for greatness in the situation with a “wouldn’t it be great if…” response to obstacles, which is a critical piece of this mindset.

Face Fear With Courage

I define courage as the audacity to never give up. When you encounter setbacks and a bump in the road, which are inevitable, a mindset of courage gives you the strength to push on through the fear. Courage does not mean that you don’t feel fear; it means you recognize the fear and do it anyway. It is the ability to see the danger and everything that could go wrong and to look that fear in the face and steadfastly say that you know the risk, but you will go through with it anyway. A courageous mindset is never about avoiding difficulties but rather about the fortitude to step out of your comfort zone and figure out the path.

Refuse To Give Up

Courage will lead you into the battle, but perseverance is the mindset that will keep you in the fight. Perseverance is vital because when obstacles happen along the way, you must have it to stay the course. It is the part of your mindset that will mark your path in the correct direction. Perseverance is what gives you the ability never to turn around and go back to safety; it leads you down the path. No matter the vision or the courage to step in, perseverance is critical to success because it allows you to finish the process.

These three pieces of the entrepreneurial mindset – the ability to imagine possibilities, courage, and perseverance – are what sets you apart from others and allows you to reach your goals, no matter how audacious they may seem. You must remind yourself that others have done it before, and if you keep going, and keep pushing, and refuse to give up – you will prevail. You only fail when you give up.

At the Growth Architect, we want to help you break through with tools and techniques to make your vision happen. My job as a strategist is to help you understand how your mindset, growth, and business strategies work together. That’s what I do! Growth Mapping for Results

Growth mapping allows you to look at where you are today as your starting point and then determine the plans to get you where you want to go. It helps to envision your growth map like an Excel spreadsheet containing all of the actions that need to occur to scale your business, accelerate your business growth, and reach your ultimate goals. It’s about growing yourself as a leader and growing your business. It’s about growing your team and building; it’s about moving forward.

Know Your Location – Plan Your Destination

To begin the growth mapping process, it is essential to know where you currently are and where you want to be in the future. To do this, it is necessary to take the plane to 30,000 feet and take a look at the terrain. This is not a time to look for details; the only goal is to determine where you are and where you want to land. Once this is determined, it is like making a flight plan from airport to airport to reach your destination. Without this vantage point and taking the time to plan the route, most people will do lots of backtracking and waste valuable time and energy getting where they want to be.

Mapping vs. Strategy

The growth map is the overall idea; how will you get there? Strategies are the individual pieces of the plan deployed to get you to your destination. The growth map will determine the order of the strategies you plan on implementing to get you where you want to be. For example, you may decide the need to address lead generation. To accomplish this, you must work on your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Google Ads, search engine optimization, blogging, and YouTube strategies.

Understanding the difference between mapping and strategy is essential because it lets you stay focused on how the map guides you to get to your destination. The strategies serve as the individual elements that help you reach your goals.

Be Deliberate – Stop Reacting

A common denominator among most business owners, entrepreneurs, founders, startups, and even seasoned business professionals is that they spend their time reacting all day long. Rather than planning their day – the day sets the pace and determines their activities. Instead of mapping out where they want to go and then deliberately taking action, one strategy at a time and following their growth map to reach their goals, they get distracted by the events around them. It then becomes almost impossible to stay focused on their ultimate goals.

At the Growth Architect, my goal is to help you develop a plan that will give you the growth map you need to help you reach your goals. If you want to learn more about creating a growth map, watch my video, and contact me when you are ready to develop your growth strategy!

How To Stop Overwhelm

You need to accomplish so many things, and it feels like you have such a small amount of time to get everything done. When most people look at their to-do list, it seems like it is filled with hundreds of items, creating a feeling of overwhelm. Where should you start, what do you need to do, and how do you put everything together in the correct order? The good news is that there are actual steps you can take to help this feeling of overwhelm subside by determining where it is coming from and steps for moving forward.

New Journeys Create Overwhelming Feelings

The overwhelming feeling is a natural reaction to something new in our world. When we come to a road in our lives that we have never gone down, our natural instinct is to overload with information which can trigger the overwhelm and shutdown reaction. This is the time to take a deep breath and really assess what is causing these feelings. Once you learn that this is a common feeling and it can be controlled, you can begin sorting through the process and stop the overwhelm by making sure that you are very clear about what it is that you need to do.

The Past Influences The Present

One of the reasons you feel this sense of overwhelm in a new situation has little to do with what is going on in your current world and a great deal to do with your past experiences. When you were a child, your response to situations was influenced heavily by those around you and your environment. It actually becomes part of who you are and your worldview, and these thoughts have become part of your truth. This matters in overwhelming situations because our tendencies in stress are to revert to our natural programming. Have you ever been in a high-intensity moment and said something and immediately realized that you sounded exactly like your mother or father? That is because of the programming that is part of your mindset. When presented with a new problem or new information, it is imperative that you pause and evaluate your response. Is how you feel rational, or is it simply an old belief system that needs to be evaluated and thought through a different method of thinking? By taking the time to evaluate your response, you can sort through what is real and what is simply a learned reaction based on past experiences and beliefs.

Exclude What Is Not Relevant

One of the most critical steps to overcoming overwhelm is looking at everything you feel bombarded with and weeding out what is relevant. Think of it like how you look at a menu and decide what to eat – I had this yesterday, I don’t like this, I need to stay on a specific diet, etc.; you will do the exact process with the list of things in front of you by excluding all of the items that are not relevant to you. For example, you will determine that you do not want to deploy a Twitter strategy, but you will start a YouTube strategy. Look at your clients and determine if an Instagram strategy makes sense for what you are trying to accomplish. Overwhelm will begin to diminish when you pause and use your logical mind to determine what is relevant to what you are trying to accomplish.

Organize Your Strategy For Action

When you understand that overwhelmed business owners are feeling this way because of a multitude of things floating around without priority, it allows you to see the importance of creating a business strategy to place goals in a step-by-step order. Once a system is implemented, the confusion subsides because the steps needed are placed in order for success. Once you know what you are going to do, you can decide if you will do it yourself or hire someone to accomplish that specific task. For instance, are you going to learn how to write a sales sequence, or will you hire a writer? Are you going to set up the email sequences yourself, or will you hire someone to accomplish this task? Instead of becoming overwhelmed with all of the tasks, they are now in order, and you can determine what to do to execute the specific items in the strategy.

You stop the overwhelm by making sure that you are very clear about what you need to do, and you figure out what you need to do by having a strategy. At the Growth Architect, my goal is to help you develop a business strategy that will give you the map you need for success. If you want to learn more about building a system to overcome overwhelm, watch my video, and contact me when you are ready to create your growth strategy!

How To Get Motivated When You Don’t Feel Like It

Follow-through requires motivation, and sometimes it can be challenging to stay motivated in a season when nothing seems to light your fire. The good news is that there are strategies to get you out of your lack of gumption and boost your motivation forward.

Motivation Is A Mindset

Motivation fluctuates because it is based on emotion and emotions change over time. Because it is external, it can create a habit of waiting on something to make you feel like accomplishing something. The truth is that you must begin to shift your emotion from being a feeling to becoming a mindset. The way to achieve this is by learning to find motivation in accomplishing the goals you set for yourself. You put your plans into action by learning to shift what needs to occur into a list of commitments you have made to yourself.

Commit To the Daily Five

The best way to shift your motivation into action is to create a list of five things you must accomplish in a day – I call these the daily five. Before you go to bed or first thing in the morning, write down five items that you must accomplish during the day. I do not recommend writing down more than five items on this list, especially initially, because it can become overwhelming and keep you from experiencing success. These five things have now become a commitment to yourself; you will not end the day until you have accomplished these five things.

Do What You Committed To Do

Your followthrough is paramount; you must commit that you will accomplish the five things you placed on your list for the day. The list is now a commitment you have made to yourself – it is something you said that you are going to do, and you must accomplish it. Now, you can stop waiting on the feeling, that magical moment when you feel a burst of energy to get something accomplished because you realize that motivation is not some magic bullet that arrives and pushes you through. You begin to accomplish your tasks because they are a commitment to yourself, and you owe it to yourself to be accountable to the commitments you have to do what you said you were going to do.

Self-Accountability Builds Confidence

When you learn to hold yourself accountable for the commitments you have made, over time, the result becomes newfound confidence and more self-esteem. Self-accountability actually creates a mindset that you can trust yourself to follow through with your commitments and see yourself as a person who holds yourself accountable for the work you said you would accomplish. By making self-accountability a habit, you learn that you achieve your goals because you chose to and not because someone is coming behind you and checking your work. You do what you commit to doing because it is the right thing to do, and it benefits you in the long run. You make a commitment to yourself, and then instead of thinking about it or wondering whether or not you are motivated – you are just going to get up, and you are going to do it. You must refuse to stop until the five things on your list are finished.

The trick is to stop thinking about it, commit, and keep your commitments to yourself. By doing this, it builds character, and character builds success. As the Growth Architect, I want to help you learn how to become more motivated, keep commitments, and hold yourself accountable to do what you said you would do. If you want to learn more about building your motivation, watch my video; let’s grow!

Become a Better Communicator: 3 Easy Steps

Most people have worked with someone who views themselves as a fantastic communicator. When, in reality, no one understands their directions, they leave the team confused about the next steps, and create an overall culture of frustration. You don’t want to be that person, and the good news is that there are three easy steps you can take to start overcoming ineffective communication today.

Make Context ClearTo communicate effectively, never assume that someone knows the context – you must show them the North Star – the overall idea, so they understand where you are going. When you take the time to communicate the overall vision, it allows others to know where they fit into the overall picture. This is important because it removes confusion and barriers to accomplishing goals. When a person is only given a small piece of information, they lose connection to the overarching goal you are trying to accomplish. Taking that extra minute or two to place work into context increases their knowledge of the project and the importance of their role in achieving the overall objectives.Clarify Next Steps

Each time you communicate, your goal should always be clarity. One way to accomplish this is to think sequentially in a “what next” formula. When you assign a task, make it clear what their next step should be when they complete their current one. Making the next steps crystal clear allows others to ask clarifying questions, and it takes the guesswork out of expectations. This is important because it reveals other areas in the steps that may have gotten overlooked. When working with a team, this step works best by communicating with the group simultaneously. Sharing information this way keeps everyone in the loop and allows others to understand pivotal pieces of information that they may need to be successful. When clarity is the goal, it eliminates confusion.

Ensure Everyone Has The Tools They Need

Never be afraid to ask questions. When goals and tasks have been communicated, it is imperative to ask if everyone has the tools they need to accomplish their role. One way you can ensure understanding is to have them repeat the task back to you in their own words. If they cannot articulate the task, then pieces of information need to be explained differently.

Keep in mind that most people are eager to complete a task effectively and want to do things the right way. Chances are that if they don’t accomplish their job, they don’t understand the expectations. One of the best ways to combat this problem and set them up for success is to make sure that you check for understanding at the very beginning of the project. When you are the holder of knowledge, and your team only knows a small portion of what is going on, it is a recipe for miscommunication, failure, and frustration.

If you are not seeing the success in your business that you want to see, consider how effectively you are communicating with your team. At the Growth Architect, we want to help you be successful and support you with the tools, processes, systems, and mapping to help you follow the path to be more successful. If you want to know more about communicating effectively, check out my video – let’s grow!

What Is A Business Plan, and Why Do You Need One?

A solid business plan defines your company’s strategy for success, and any business that wants to grow, build, and scale must have one in place. An effective business plan will define how you will approach marketing, sales, make projections, who your competitors are, among other components that impact your success. It is not uncommon to find the thought of a business plan intimidating, but once you understand what it needs and why you need it, the process becomes less complicated.

How Lengthy Should Your Business Plan Be?

Often, business owners and entrepreneurs are under the impression that a business plan must be a long, massive document – this is entirely untrue. Actually, most businesses gain meaningful results from an approximately one-page business plan. So, resist the urge to overcomplicate the process.

Yes, more in-depth, large business plans have a place, but they are generally needed in specific situations – most revolving around loans and investors. For instance, asking for a loan from the bank requires specifics on how you will repay the loan, so your financial plans need to be in order. When you approach investors, they need to know your company plan for scaling up. Knowing that most investors are typically looking for significant growth, your business plan must be bold on investment, marketing, and expansion.

Unless you are searching for funding, a simple one-page business plan is enough to get you moving in the direction of growing, building, and scaling your business.

Components of a Business Plan

To begin creating a business plan, you must address these five components:

Who Are Your Clients?

First, clearly define your ideal client. If you haven’t done this yet, I recommend that you start with my Airtight Avatar. This is a foundational piece I give away for free to help you nail down the first piece of your business plan. The downloadable guide will allow you to uncover exactly who you are targeting in around 30 minutes.

What is Your Product?

The second piece of your business plan is knowing exactly what you are selling. You must be able to clearly define your product or service to move to the next steps.

What Problem Does Your Product or Service Solve?

It is not good enough to have a great product; you must define the problem that your product or service actually solves. In this step, you must be extremely specific – this is the person who will buy it, and this is what they are going to buy it – why they need what you have to offer.

How Will You Deliver the Product or Service?

Next, define how you will deliver your particular product or service. Will you be coaching or consulting? Does your distribution plan include wholesale, retail, Amazon, Dropship, etc.? Whatever you may be using or doing, specify how it will be delivered.

How Will You Make Money?

Finally, write down how you plan to make money and have these numbers in place. Have an idea of your operational costs, overhead such as rent, utilities, people on your payroll, and how often all of these items need to be paid: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Next, determine approximately how many units you plan to sell. When you have these numbers in place, calculate them in a financial spreadsheet with assumptions on the number of sales or services at a specific price, which will give you a gross profit. Then, deduct your overhead from your gross profit, determining your net profit. This piece will allow you to determine how your business will be making money.

At the Growth Architect, my goal is to help you develop a business plan that will give you the roadmap you need for success. If you want to learn more about creating a business plan, watch my video, and contact me when you are ready to develop your growth strategy!

How To Build a Better Business Strategy

A solid business strategy should provide a company with the tools to see growth and reach its goals, so what went wrong if it’s not producing the intended results? Typically, this deficit occurs when a company has one overall strategy that lacks all the pieces needed to succeed. Within a strategy are several business components that have to align for your overall business strategy to work – a marketing strategy, a branding strategy, lead generation sales – and to experience success, they all have to work together.

No One is Good At Everything

One reason that many business strategies fail revolves around the tendency for leaders to focus on what they do well. Although this is a normal human response based on an innate desire to experience success, what happens in business is that it creates a lopsided business environment that lacks alignment. Leaving out the areas in which we do not have natural abilities makes a really wonky business strategy that can’t work because it’s not optimally aligned. If you want to create a consistent growth strategy for your business, you must focus on all of the critical components, not simply the ones in your areas of strength.

Align Your Strategies for Success

To experience successful growth in your business, five areas must be aligned:

Define your customer – who you are targeting for salesDevelop an offer that solves a particular problem based on their needsBuild a system strategy aligned with your target audience and what they needDevelop a strategy for your peopleAlign your leadership strategy for success

Once all of these components are aligned, you have a sound working business strategy that will propel growth. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you only have to do this one time, and then you will never have to do it again. Because business is dynamic, it must be revisited and adjusted as you experience growth and change for your strategy to continue to work.

Start With the Airtight Avatar

If you realize the strategy you are using right now is not working and you want to make changes, I recommend that you start with my Airtight Avatar. The Great Resignation – Why Are People Leaving Their Jobs?

Take a look around at all of the help wanted signs and posts, and it is not difficult to realize that the workforce has drastically changed. With a record number of employees quitting their jobs – 4.3 million, the world of work is changing around us, and now is the time to make adjustments. Low-income earners have left at the highest rate, especially those in hospitality, retail, and other high contact jobs that require continual exposure to others. Although the great resignation can seem impossible to overcome, there is a way to overcome the talent shortage and become a talent magnet.

Understand the Paradigm Shift of Leverage

For the first time in modern history, employees hold the leverage on employment. In the past, most workers were happy to receive a paycheck, but living amid COVID has changed that point of view. The pandemic has caused people to live with the constant realization that the threat of death is real and life is too short to live a life that has not amounted to anything. Because of these new realizations of the brevity of time and life, people want to spend time with their families and live a more balanced lifestyle. The message sent to employers is that employees will no longer tolerate a feeling like a number without a voice. They are no longer willing to put up with being asked to show up, shut up, and do their jobs.

As an employer, you must ask yourself a probing question – Why are your employees leaving? As a strategist who works with hundreds of companies, I see that in most places, it comes down to employees feeling valued. They desire being seen, heard, and they want their importance to the company to be validated. Who among us ever wants to be viewed as a number? Now is the time to evaluate how you demonstrate to your employees their value and importance to your business.

Waiting This Out Is Not an Option

If you think you will wait this shift out, that is no longer an option. This new mindset of workers is no longer a fleeting concept – it is the new reality – with permanence for the foreseeable future. Understanding that it takes between 21 and 90 days to form a new habit, this new way of thinking and acting has gone on for almost two years; therefore, it goes past a habit and has actually become a way of life and undoing or changing it is highly unlikely. Waiting it out is no longer viable, and now is the time to embrace it and make adjustments.

Change is a Non-Negotiable

If you plan on navigating this change and making it as a business leader in this new workforce environment, you must change your attitude and how you view your employees. One of the first changes needs to be an adjustment to your values, mission, and vision statement to reflect what is required by the current market conditions. To attract employees, become a talent magnet, and get your people to stay, you have no choice except to make significant changes.

At the Growth Architect, we want to provide you with the tools and techniques to help you navigate the challenges of this great resignation. As a strategist, I want to help you create a plan for attracting and retaining talent in this challenging time. How Do I Find My Purpose?

It has been said that there are two significant events in life – when you are born and when you discover why you are here. Most people want to live out their purpose but often get sidetracked in finding their exact life mission. When you take the time to focus on your why, it will make it much easier to step onto your intended path.

Uncover Likes and Natural Abilities

Although purpose can seem like a broad concept that takes a lifetime to realize, that is not true. You can begin to uncover your purpose right now by focusing on four simple areas: what comes easily, what is difficult, what you love, and what you dislike. Think of these areas as a continuum from easy to difficult and from love to dislike. Now, list everything you do, and write them down in these quadrants. For example, you may be fantastic at Excel spreadsheets and find them relatively easy, but you do not enjoy completing them; this would go in the Easy column under Dislike. Keep adding activities in each column and discover everything that falls into the category of Easy and Love.

When you have completed this activity, you will have uncovered a critical piece to understanding your purpose, your natural abilities – which all fell into the Easy and Love colume. These areas need to be understood deeper because usually, the answer to your purpose, vision, and mission in life is embedded in innate things, completely aligned with your personality and who you are.

Stop Forcing It

Whether you realize it or not, you have been institutionally trained from formal education and the corporate world to conform to others’ goals and expectations. The whole structure of corporate America is designed to find your deficiencies, while school systems focus on helping you become great at skills that are not part of the real world. This leads to most people learning how to do tasks they may not like, but they become quite successful at accomplishing. Congratulations, we have created an entire workforce that is fantastic at accomplishing things they hate, who never live out their purpose on this earth.

When you have been trained this way for most of your life, it is not hard to understand how most people get lost and confused in discovering their vision and mission in life. The thing to take away is that if you have to force yourself to continue doing your current job, the odds are very slim that you are walking in your purpose.

Focus on the Ending

One of the most effective ways to determine your purpose is to think about the end of your life. What would you want written on your tombstone? Your statement can actually evolve, so this task needs to be revisited periodically. For instance, mine has shifted to become more inclusive because unity has become an essential part of who I am. Whereas I used to say that mine would read, “Here lies a woman that was instrumental in defining women’s leadership,” now, it would focus on balanced leadership because my passions have led me to embrace a more inclusive view of leadership. Whatever you come up with that matters at the very end of your life is a vital piece of your purpose. Just keep thinking about it, talking about it, seeing how it fits. If you work with it enough, you will have that moment when you nail it down because it feels right – It just feels like you.

Finding your purpose does not have to be difficult. It should build on the things that come easily to you because those center on your natural, innate gift, the gift you were given to make your impact. If you want to learn more about finding your purpose, then watch my video, and contact me if you need help developing a strategy to live it out!
