Ever After at Sweetheart

Blurb

The only thing hotter than a cowboy…

Math teacher Lyndsay De Luca never surprised anyone-least of all herself-until this summer. First, she secretly published her debut romance novel. Then she started dating Will Sweet, the cowboy of her dreams. And now Lyndsay’s scrambling to hide the juiciest tidbit of all: that the hazel-eyed hero of her steamy fiction is the same guy whose kisses have become her mind-blowing reality.

Is a cowboy in love.

Ever since Will’s high school sweetheart died in a tragic accident, he hasn’t been able to commit to a long-term relationship. Lyndsay is the first woman in years who’s been able to catch-and keep-his attention. She’s fascinated by his work at Sweetheart Ranch, and a glance from her gorgeous brown eyes sends Will’s thoughts wandering. Will she be the one to finally break down the walls around his guarded heart?

My thoughts:

I have to admit I have not read the other books in this series as I had no clue it existed until this tour.  I am so glad I have found it to start at the beginning.

This book was wonderful.  Will’s past keeps him in the past riddle with quilt.  His former high school girlfriend died in an accident that he feels guilty about.  He can’t move on. Lyndsay has had a crush on Will for a long time now and for 15 years he has had this quilt. Lyndsay finally realizes he will never be able to love her and leaves.

Lyndsay is about to release her first romance novel she tires desperately to keep the book under wraps but everyone wants to help promote her to anyone who listens.  Will has no clue the hero is similar to him and has no clue the book is being released.

I liked the fact we learn about the past characters in the other books another reason I want to read the others.  I did not feel left out but saying that I wish I had started at the beginning. It does not take away from this wonderful read though.

The author does a great job with this book and I will be looking for the other books and continuing this series.

Excerpt

Although a year younger than Tony, Will had been one of his best friends, so he’d been at her house a lot growing up, eating snacks after school while killing time before football or baseball practices. Tony had extracted a promise from her that she could never date any of his friends because it would put him in the middle when they broke up. Oh, he’d had a double standard all right, since he’d dated Kate, then married and divorced her. It had been awful on the friendships involved, so he’d been proven right.

She’d laughed at her brother then for laying down the law, but inside she’d taken him seriously.

Now Will was playing shortstop, always in the thick of the action, and Lyndsay didn’t have to hide watching him play. Oh, and her brother was out there somewhere, too, center field.

“Did you ever date Will?” Kate asked.

Lyndsay almost betrayed herself by stiffening, but she caught the reaction in time. “Nope.”

She and Will had absolutely nothing in common—she was a math teacher who played trumpet in a small jazz band and wrote books. Talk about geek. He was a cowboy whose love of the outdoors carried over to snowboarding and mountain biking, but he was a reckless daredevil. Once she’d gone on a ride with her brother and him, and she’d ended up walking halfway down the side of a mountain leading her bike because she couldn’t keep up.

“I thought you said he’d dated everybody,” Kate said skeptically.

“Only those women interested in him. We don’t all fawn over him, you know.”

“Defensive much?”

Lyndsay gave her a frown. “No, Counselor, just stating a fact.”

“And you’re perfectly happy with that dentist from Carbondale, right? We had a good time double-dating at Wild Thing.”

Lyndsay hesitated, then admitted, “We broke up a couple weeks ago.”

Kate gasped. “Oh, Lynds, I’m so sorry! You’d been together awhile, hadn’t you?”

“Eight months.”

“Are you okay?”

“It was a mutual thing, no big deal.” But Lyndsay kept her eyes on the team at bat, not wanting to admit the truth—that she’d ended things and left the poor guy brokenhearted. The confusion and disbelief in his eyes still made her flinch every time she remembered it.

She’d been just as confused, but she’d known one thing—she hadn’t fallen in love with him, and at thirty-three, if she wasn’t feeling a long-term commitment, then what was the point?

Author Info

Emma Cane grew up reading and soon discovered that she liked to write passionate stories of teenagers in space. Her love of “passionate stories” has never gone away, although today she concentrates on the heartwarming characters of Valentine, her fictional small town in the Colorado Rockies.

Now that her three children are grown, Emma loves spending time crocheting and singing (although not necessarily at the same time), and hiking and snowshoeing alongside her husband Jim and two rambunctious dogs Apollo and Uma.

A Heart’s Disguise by Colleen Coble book review

22574553

In the aftermath of the Civil War, a young woman searches for her lost love at the edge of the West.

The Civil War has destroyed Sarah Montgomery’s marriage before it’s even begun.

After Sarah receives word that her fiance, Rand Campbell, has been killed fighting for the Union, her brothers and ailing father persuade her to pledge herself to Ben Croftner–despite her strong misgivings. But when Sarah finds out that Rand is in fact alive–and that Ben Croftner knew it–she indignantly breaks off the engagement and goes in search of Rand.

But Ben Croftner does not take rejection lightly–and a single woman with a sick father makes an easy target. When Sarah is abducted by her treacherous fiance, Rand finally comes to her aid . . . only to reveal that he has been posted at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and intends to take her there as his wife. But could Sarah leave her dying father’s side for the love of her life? And what plans are forming in the jealous heart of Ben Croftner?

My thoughts

Colleen Coble is a great writer and I was excited to hear she has a new series starting.  Everyone around Sarah is celebrating the end of the Civil War but not her.  She longs for Rand to come home but learns he is died.  She tires to please her family even though she does not want to marry especially when she is not in love with the man. Ben is now her intended but knows Rand is really alive.

I was taken in from the very first page and did not want the story to end.  The author did  wonderful job with the time period.  Back then families had to move on with their lives no matter how upset or down they where and it is conveyed  in the story quite well.  The characters take you into their hearts and you want the happy ending to come for Sarah.

I will be watching for book 2 to come along what a great series.

“I’ll be giving a percentage of my earnings on A Love Like Ours from whenever the book starts selling through May 17th to IFHF.”

Babs Book Bistro†- Review

“…this is the first book I have read by this author and it will not be the last.”

Min Reads and Reviews†- Excerpt

Turning, he squinted beneath the brim of his black Stetson and tried to make out who was coming toward him. A small woman with long, wavy blond hair. She wasnít on the barn staff; that he knew. He angled toward her more fully.

And then, very slowly, recognition began to slide over him. The hair on his arms rose.

It couldnít be her. Not after all this time. And yet the rational part of his brain understood that it could be. He knew sheíd moved back to Holley. His mom had been nagging him to see her ever since, but heíd wanted no part of that, no part of her.

Yet here she was.

Bookworm Lisa†- Review

“Jake was a marine. The wounds he carries from his time in Iraq are not all visible to the eye. He has a scar on his face, but his real battle is in the PTSD that is a part of his everyday life. I really liked that the book looked into a topic that is the battle that extends long after a soldier leaves the military. The book looks at how everyday situations can impact a person struggling with PTSD.”

Wishful Endings†- Excerpt

Jakeís poor face. His poor, ravaged face, both undeniably handsome and unbearably exhausted. As big and strong as he was physically, he was also wounded. He needed someone to care about him.

Following pure instinct, she stepped forward and reached up to place her hands on either side of his face.

ìNo,î he rasped, trying to pull back.

ìShh,î she replied, firm. Sheíd purposely placed her hands in the same position on both sides of his face, favoring neither the perfect side nor the scarred.

Katie’s Clean Book Collection†- Review

“Tackling a serious issue that many in our military face is no easy feat, but Ms. Wade does it well. The story isn’t too heavy, as it’s balanced with romance, fun, family, horses, and religion. I love reading about this Porter Family and can’t wait for more!”

Pieces of Whimsy†- Excerpt

He had only two goals where Lyndie was concerned: to interact with her as little as possible and to keep her safe.

Whispering Creek Horses took every precaution with their exercise riders. In the past, a few had sustained minor injuries but none had been seriously hurt. There was no reason to worry about Lyndie.

He should be more concerned about himself. He couldnít afford to let a pretty blonde mess with his head.

Getting Your Read On†- Review

“The slow progression for Jake is so satisfying to read. I loved the flow of the book and I loved learning in bits about both Jake and Lyndie. This is one of those “feel good” books leave you so content in the end. It’s a great addition to this Porter Family series. I loved it!”

I Am A Reader†- Excerpt

How long had it been since sheíd experienced a stirring of desire for anyone? Ages. A couple of years at least. It was fun and harmless to . . . tingle . . . over someone again. It wasnít as if Jake was in danger of returning her feelings. Or as if this altered her intentions toward him.

She was determined to help him and his horse. The kind of help she had in mind for Jake had nothing to do with Valentineís Day emotions and everything to do with Godís power to redeem.

Mommabears Book Blog†- Excerpt

Jake stopped at Silver Leafís stall. The horse had his head down, chewing hay. It took Jake a moment to spot Lyndieís small form in the dim space. She sat to one side, her back against the wall, her knees drawn up and her arms wrapped around them. She must have heard him coming because she was already gazing up at him. Her lips tipped into a gentle smile.

For a long moment Jake stared at her. Foolish woman, sitting in a horse stall for hours every day. Even more frustrating, looking at him as if she liked him and trusted him. Looking at him as if she believed he was worthy of her friendship and trust. Raw pain gathered in his chest.

Christian Bookshelf Reviews†- Review

“A Love Like Ours was another special read from Becky Wade. I loved the characters and finally reading Jake’s story…which was such a sad, yet beautiful story.”

Worthy2Read†- Review

“Character-driven, A Love Like Ours was a joy to read ó and re-read. As Lyndie and Jake get to know one another again, Lyndie breaks through the walls Jake has built (and those surrounding Silver Leaf) to be an instrument of hope and healing. Wades characters are flawed individuals, ones the reader can relate to and cheer for. Her novel captivates the reader from the prologue.”

My Devotional Thoughts†- Spotlight

My thoughts:

This was a new to me author and so glad I took the chance on the book.  Be prepared to be gripped by this book.  Drew and Allison gosh where to begin I felt so angry and sad for them and their tormentors.  They went through so much.  It was easy to forgive Drew for the things he had done.  The book takes on abuse in a way that makes you think and you really want to see what happens with them.  You might find yourself on the angry side and sad side as well.
The author did a great job with this book and the characters.  Justice was served and this book really rocks.

Excerpt :

As she took off her clothes he put his hands

behind his head and watched her every movement. Each one was poetry in motion

to his way of thinking. To him, she was the most beautiful woman in the world.

He loved her so deeply he felt it in his soul. She was everything to him and he

wanted to be everything to her. His heart was filled with such peace, his body

with such longing, he could barely contain the feelings.

The last piece of clothing she removed was her

panties and when she turned to the bed, he whistled in appreciation. As he had

at the two motels they’d stayed at on the way to the cabin, he pretended not to

notice the healing bruises covering her sweet body.

“Will you get under the covers?” she asked. She

sat on the mattress, then stuck her legs under the sheet.

“Hey. You can leave your socks on but you took

mine off?” he challenged. “You think that’s fair?”

“I have poor circulation in my feet,” she said.

“Believe me. You don’t want my cold toesies rubbing along your calf in the middle

of the night.”

“I believe you should pay a toll for being

allowed to wear socks to bed when I can’t,” he told her as he joined her under

the covers.

“What kind of toll?” she asked.

“The kind that is exacting,” he said. He slid

down in the bed—disappearing beneath the covers—and slid on top of her.

Add in a missing bracelet, some suspicious husbands, and a little breaking and entering—and this Jersey girl is heading for a real blowout!

Can Colleen tie up these split ends? Or does she have an appointment with disaster?

My thoughts:

This is a first time author for me and excited to have read one of her books.  This series is a keeper.  I was hooked from the very first page.  I have to admit I have not read the first book but will now.  I did not find myself lost in anyway.  Colleen is divorced with a teenage daughter.  She goes to get her hair done and finds her hair stylist dead and she immediately takes action and starts to investigate.  To make things worse  a fitness owner falls from a plane with out a parachute.

If this is not enough her editor wants more then just an article from Colleen at lot more. She is in for some fun and hard work to find out who has done what.

The author does a great job keeping us guessing on who has done it.  So many twists and turns.  I loved it.  I did not want to put this book down at all.

Editor: Bobbie Metevier

Published by Permuted Press May 19, 2015

ISBN: 9781618685698

ASIN: B00WAH55JW

About VOICES:

Sometimes the ghosts

from your past…are real.

Moira Flynn is arrested for attacking a door-to-door solicitor with a knife. She claims a voice told her the man was intent on assaulting her. The trouble is, she was the only one that heard that voice. Moira strikes a plea bargain and is sent to a psychiatric hospital for voluntary treatment. Dr. Richard Cassano is hesitant to treat her as schizophrenic, as she does not show the standard symptoms. As their sessions progress, Moira confesses there are two voices—and they aren’t voices in her head, but the voices of ghosts. Are they imaginary? Or are they actual spirits, attached to her for reasons of their own? As Moira’s doctor uncovers more of her past, he begins to realize that her ghosts are real. And one of them is determined to drag Moira into the afterlife with him.

Excerpt from VOICES:

Moira choked down a congealed glob of oatmeal. Bland, like all the food here. She picked up her plastic knife and smeared margarine onto a piece of dry toast. Patients were only given plastic utensils. She washed the toast down with a gulp of tepid decaf coffee and sat back, miserable. “I hate this place, I want out.”
“At least your session was cancelled for tomorrow,” Jack said. “One less thing I’ll have to sit through.”
Dr. Cassano didn’t say why, either, Moira worried. He seemed nervous about cancelling too.
“We’ll get out.”
“Not we, Jack, me. I want out.” She stared mournfully at the food on her tray. “I don’t care what happens to you.”
“That’s not nice,” Isabella said.
“I don’t care what happens to you, either.”
“You’re mean!” She retreated to the corner of the room to pout.
“Don’t be mean, Moira,” Jack reprimanded. “Isabella’s just a child.”
She let out a sound of frustration. They both knew Jack didn’t care the slightest about Isabella. “I wonder why Dr. Cassano cancelled it.”
“Why do you care?”
Moira turned away pointedly and undid her braid, hoping to dissuade the headache coming on.
“Don’t ignore me,” Jack said, his voice hardening. “I didn’t like the way he looked at you this morning.” He grabbed her arm.” I don’t like the way you look at him either. I see the way you look at him.”
She shook him off. “You’re paranoid, Jack.”
“You know what I’m talking about, don’t play dumb.” He sat back, his eyes watchful. “Don’t trust him, Moira. Who knows what he’s planning?”
“If you do anything, Jack, I mean anything. They’ll lock the door and throw away the key.” She moved away from his presence. “And don’t think they wouldn’t medicate me with a dozen different pills, all guaranteed to make you go away forever.”
“You know pills won’t make me go away, Moira,” Jack bit out. “They might make you sleep, but they won’t make me go away.”
Silence filled the room. Moira picked up her brush and started brushing out her hair.
“It would be his word against yours, if he ever tried anything.”
“Just drop it, Jack,” Moira said.
Jack narrowed his eyes. “He’d medicate you so you’d never remember it, either.”
She shook her head in disgust.
“Maybe you could bust out of here!” Isabella jumped up. “I’ll bet you could open the window with that knife.” She ran over to the window and pushed against it.
“It’s completely sealed, Isabella.” Moira watched her, feeling helpless to the noise from her efforts. “Stop banging on it! You’re going to get me into trouble.”
“You could cut through the walls!”
“Hello? Plastic knife, it can’t cut anything.”
“It can’t?” Jack asked. “Have you tried?”
She caught his look and quickly turned her attention to Isabella, who was still thumping on the window. “I’m not breaking out of here, Isabella. Do you want me to go to jail?”
“But what if they keep you in here forever?” Isabella asked.
“They’re not going to.”
“But what if they do?” Isabella jumped up and down. “What if they keep you here until you’re old and grey and all your teeth fall out?”
“It would be awful to be stuck here forever,” Jack said quietly. “Wouldn’t it, Moira? Just awful.”
“They’re not going to keep me here forever!” Moira said. “Isabella, stop it!”
The door opened. “Problem?” the nurse asked.
She glanced over at Jack. A slice of a smile crept across his lips. “No. No problem. Just…thinking aloud.”
“Finish up your breakfast, then,” she said briskly. She shut the door again.
Moira picked up her carton of juice and took a sip.
Jack pushed her hand upwards, sloshing juice into Moira’s face and down her T-shirt.
Whoops!” Isabella giggled.
“Asshole,” she muttered. She went into the bathroom with Jack trailing her. Their eyes connected in the mirror.
“Looks like you’ll need another shower,” he murmured.
She pressed her mouth in a straight line and turned her back to him.

Synopsis

Where is Kent Heyward? The twenty-three-year-old heiress from one of Charleston’s oldest families vanished a month ago. When her father hires private investigator Liz Talbot, Liz suspects the most difficult part of her job will be convincing the patriarch his daughter tired of his overbearing nature and left town. That’s what the Charleston Police Department believes.

But behind the garden walls South of Broad, family secrets pop up like weeds in the azaleas. The neighbors recollect violent arguments between Kent and her parents. Eccentric twin uncles and a gaggle of cousins covet the family fortune. And the lingering spirit of a Civil-War-era debutante may know something if Colleen, Liz’s dead best friend, can get her to talk.

Liz juggles her case, the partner she’s in love with, and the family she adores. But the closer she gets to what has become of Kent, the closer Liz dances to her own grave.

A Love Like Ours (Porter Family #3)A Love Like Ours

(Porter Family #3)

by Becky Wade

Christian Contemporary Romance

Paperback, 368 Pages

May 5th 2015 by Bethany House Publishers

Deeply scarred from a day he wishes he could forget during his military service, Thoroughbred trainer Jake Porter has given up on love. He struggles against symptoms of PTSD, lives a solitary life, and avoids relationships.

When Lyndie James, Jake’s childhood best friend, returns to their hometown of Holley, Texas, Jake cautiously hires her to exercise his Thoroughbreds. Lyndie is tender-hearted, fiercely determined, and afraid of nothing, just like she was as a child. Jake trusts her with his prized racehorse, Silver Leaf, then battles his hopes for his horse against his increasing fear for Lyndie’s safety.

Though Jake and Lyndie have grown into very different adults, the bond that existed during their childhood still ties them together. Against Jake’s will, Lyndie’s sparkling, optimistic personality begins to tear down the walls he’s built around his heart. A glimmer of the hope he’d thought he’d lost returns. Will Jake ever be able to love Lyndie like she deserves, or is his heart too shattered to mend?

My thoughts:

What a great read this is the first book I have read by this author and it will not be the last.  Lyndie and Jake are a cute couple and it was great seeing them come together and watch them grow.  As they work through Jakes PTSD and Lyndie’s determination you find yourself pulling for both characters.

During her childhood in California, Becky Wade†frequently produced homemade plays starring her sisters, friends, and cousins. These plays almost always featured a heroine, a prince, and a love story with a happy ending. She’s been a fan of all things romantic ever since.

Becky and her husband lived overseas in the Caribbean and Australia before settling in Dallas, Texas. It was during her years abroad that Becky’s passion for reading turned into a passion for writing. She published three historical romances for the general market, put her career on hold for many years to care for her kids, and eventually returned to writing sheerly for the love of it. Sheís delighted to be penning warm, wry, and heartwarming contemporary romances for the Christian market. She’s the Carol Award and Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award winning author of My Stubborn Heart, Undeniably Yours, and Meant to Be Mine.

These days Becky can be found failing but trying to keep up with her housework, sweating at the gym, carting her kids around town, playing tennis, hunched over her computer, eating chocolate, or collapsed on the sofa watching TV with her husband.

Book Description:

All former Navy SEAL Mason Lawson craves is solitude. Unfortunately, his new neighbor won’t allow him the peace he so desperately needs. Between the traffic and the music, Mason is constantly on edge—not exactly what the doctor ordered for someone recovering from a bullet to the leg. However, when he finally has enough and confronts his neighbor, nothing can prepare him for how hot he’d get for the teacher next door.

Piano teacher, Skylar Jernigan, loves everything about the town of Jessamine—from the quaint Main Street shops to the people who own them. Unfortunately, once she’s chewed up and spit out by her sexy neighbor, Skylar begins to question her decision to move to a new town. Until, that is, she learns he’s suffering from a war wound and refuses to have anything to do with his family.

Now, Skylar is determined to help Mason recover—mentally, physically and socially—until he turns the tables and sets out to seduce Skylar right out of her meddling ways. Only seduction turns into something more and soon, Mason can’t stop looking for excuses to be with her. But when the Navy wants Mason to reenlist for a dangerous mission, will Skylar be too irresistible for him to leave?Excerpt:

“Did you have a good time?” he asked, curious if she would go out with him again. Wait, did he want her to go out with him?

The answer was yes. His terms, he reminded himself. Honor his brothers by attempting to live. He could do this, starting with Skylar. She was his test.

And if things went well…

“I had a great time. Maybe you could invite your brother, Tristan, and my friend Lemon to go out with us on the boat.”

His eyebrows shot up. “You think there’s going to be a next time?” He decided not to inform her that it would be a cold day in hell before Tristan and Lemon did anything together that didn’t require a court order.

She flashed him a flirty smile, and his gut clenched. What was it about this woman that made him lose his mind? Made him want to try to live again? “I know there will be.”

“What makes you so sure?”

Snatching his sunglasses from the captain’s chair, she settled them on her nose and struck a pose like an old-school movie star. “I’m fabulous company,” she said and tossed her hair. “So fab.”

His lips twitched before he could stop them, and her mouth curved into a satisfied smile. “You’re tolerable.”

“I’m irresistible, sugar,” she replied in an over-exaggerated accent.

Yes, you are. He grunted. “That might be stretching things.”

“That’s not exactly disagreeing with me.”

“Bomber needs company while I swim or dive.”

“You normally go diving alone?” She looked at him over her glasses, green eyes wide. “Isn’t that dangerous?”

“For him it might be.” He rechecked her lifejacket and Bomber’s. “But for me—no.”

“What about sharks?” She whispered the last word.

“I stay away from them, and they stay away from me. Predator respects predator.”

“Oh, good Lord,” she muttered. “Try being serious.”

This time, he did more than allow his mouth to twitch. He laughed, and damn, it felt good.

Skylar, however, didn’t think he was amusing at all. She crossed her arms and turned up the cutest nose he’d ever seen.

“There are no sharks in the sound,” he said, but he didn’t go diving in the sound. The water wasn’t clear enough for his liking.

Her lips flattened. “Hmpf.”

“Okay, so you might run into a sand shark every now and then, but they won’t bite you. Hell, I’m more likely to bite you.” Nibble on you. Kiss the golden skin of her neck and work his way down to—

“I read online the other day that in January of this year, Katharine was practically all the way to Belhaven.”

“They’re still tracking her?” The fourteen-foot, twenty-three hundred pound great white had been tagged a few years back. He’d never seen her, not once, since he started diving. Maybe—

“Mason, you should not look so happy about a shark hanging out where people normally swim.”

“I’m not happy,” he snapped.

“Of course you’re not, but your mouth started doing that thing.” She touched her lips.

He frowned. “What thing?”

“The opposite of what it’s doing now.”

He started the engine and headed to shore, grateful for the excuse not to talk.

The pier came into view and he cut the boat’s engine, letting the tide carry them the rest of the way, with only short bursts of power when the boat went off course.

“You worry way too much about stuff you can’t control,” he said as he stood, grabbing the anchor and dropping it over the side. Then he formed a clove hitch and looped it over a post, securing the boat.

“I don’t have to be in control.”

“Yes, you do.”

“Well, if I’m a control freak, then you are an ultra-to-the-max control freak.”

“Never said I wasn’t, but I can’t control Mother Nature,” he pointed out and turned to his dog. At his signal, Bomber leapt onto the pier.

“Yet, you like to tempt God by going out alone and swimming with sharks.” She grabbed her beach bag, and stuffed her towel in it, then allowed him to help her onto the pier.

“No great risk, no great reward.”

He had lost his damn mind. “No swimming with sharks, get to see another day.”

“You’re cute when you’re angry,” he said to rile her up and managed to somehow piss himself off as the same time. “And I’ll swim anywhere I want, when I want.” Damn woman. He made to walk away, but she grabbed his arm.

“Don’t you dare walk away from me.” Skylar let go of his arm and fisted her hands on her hips. “You will listen to what I have to say.”

A tic started up in his jaw. “You have one minute.”
