When chefs Charly and Cliff Harding divorce, she gets custody of their upscale restaurant and its namesake, Felix, the cat.  He gets custody of their dog, Oscar.  What they both still have custody of is each other’s heart. But they seem to be the only two people in the small ski resort town of Snow Lake, Nevada, that don’t know it.

When Cliff opens his own restaurant in direct competition with Charly, bad things start to happen. Death threats, accidents, and murder are now on the menu. Their ‘if-you-can’t-take-the-heat-then-get-out-of-the-kitchen’ battles are backfiring, and regrets consume the two of them. But can they find their way back to each other?  Or is it too late? Because they just might spend the rest of their lives in prison unjustly accused of killing someone. Or can love triumph over even murder?

Guest Post

When I wrote Christmas Trifle, the story of two divorcing chefs who have to put their feelings aside to solve a murder, I had no idea what a different dish I was serving up to myself. Writing a romantic suspense novel as opposed to a whodunnit is a totally different animal.

I’m always watching the Hallmark Channel, especially when they have Movies and Mysteries night. I love reading Nora Roberts, too. And Carolyn Hart. Romance and mystery. Mystery and romance. They go together like….well, you know, man, woman, and misunderstandings.

I told myself I can tackle writing romance suspense. After all, I’ve written thirteen mystery novels, each one with varying degrees of romance in it. Several have even won awards.

So tackle it I did. And I’m glad. But as I say, romantic suspense is different than a straight-forward mystery. It took me a month or two – okay, three – to get into the style. I found romantic suspense goes at a more leisurely pace than a mystery. I found I liked it. It gave me the opportunity to bring out more facets of the two protagonists’ characters, flesh them out, show their inner thoughts and feelings. I fell in love with the often foolish Charly and Cliff, as much for their shortcomings as their virtues.

A serious relationship, such as marriage, is not for the faint of heart. Christmas Trifle  may be fiction, but I tried to call upon my own thirty-seven years of marriage for a little of the give and take that’s needed for any success. I’m sure many people will be able to relate to that.

Aside from Charly and Cliff’s stubbornness, hurt feelings, and amusing one-upmanship, the overshadowing mystery is always there. And the looming unseen threat. I love looming, unseen threats. At least, on paper.

Lastly, I put in a rescue cat and a dog, Felix and Oscar, two pals who will not be separated by anything their warring owners try to pull. Ultimately, these four-legged charmers change the course of the story, with a little help from a few unsolved murders.

Christmas Trifle, Book One of the Snow Lake Romantic Suspense Novels.

About Paula Darnell

An instructor at five colleges over the years, Paula Darnell most often taught the dreaded first-year English composition classes, but she’s also been happy to teach some fun classes, such as fashion design, sewing, and jewelry making. Paula has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and a Master’s degree in English from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Like Laurel, the main character in Death by Association, Paula enjoys all kinds of arts and crafts. Some of her memorable projects include making a hat and a cape to wear to Royal Ascot, sewing wedding gowns for both her daughters, exhibiting her textile and mixed-media artwork in juried art shows, and having one of her jewelry projects accepted for inclusion in Leather Jewelry, published by Lark Books. She sells some of her jewelry and hair accessories in her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/PaulaDJewelry.

Paula’s interest in DIY craft projects and fashion led to her writing hundreds of articles for print and online national publications.

Living in a guard-gated community governed by a homeowners’ association gave Paula the idea for the setting of Death by Association. She finds that residing in an HOA community can be both a blessing and a curse. A Happy-New-Year greeting from her community association called on residents to “start the new year by reviewing your Rules and Regulations booklet,” something unlikely to top anyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions.

Paula lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Gary and their 110-pound dog Rocky, whose favorite pastime is lurking in the kitchen, hoping for a handout

Far from a domestic goddess, Sarah Blair would rather catch bad guys than slave over a hot stove. But when a dangerous murder boils over in Wheaton, Alabama, catching the killer means leaving her comfort zone . . .

Things are finally looking up for Sarah Blair following her unsavory divorce. Settled into a cozy carriage house with her sassy Siamese cat, RahRah, she has somehow managed to hang on to her modest law firm receptionist job and—if befriending flea-bitten strays at the local animal shelter counts—lead a thriving social life. For once, Sarah almost has it together more than her enterprising twin, Emily, a professional chef whose efforts to open a gourmet restaurant have hit a real dead end . . .

When the president of the town bank and city council is murdered after icing Emily’s business plans, all eyes are on the one person who left the scene with blood on her hands—the Blair girls’ sharp-tongued mother, Maybelle. Determined to get her mom off the hook ASAP, Sarah must collect the ingredients of a deadly crime to bring the true culprit to justice. But as neighbors turn against her family, can she pare down the suspects before another victim lands on the chopping block?

Death Takes a Holiday at Pemberley by Kelly Miller #book #review

What will the master of Pemberley do when confronted with the mercurial whims of an all-powerful angel?

Fitzwilliam Darcy’s well-ordered life is about to become a chaotic nightmare. A man of fortune, property, and social prominence, he has everything he could desire. Blissfully married to his wife, Elizabeth, they have a two-year-old son. With so much to live for, Darcy is shaken by a near-fatal riding accident. After a miraculous escape, he is visited by an otherworldly being: an angel of death named Graham. Threatening dire consequences, Graham compels Darcy to guide him on a sojourn in the world of mortals.

Darcy immediately questions the angel’s motives when he demands to be a guest at Pemberley. Can he trust Graham’s assurance that no harm will come to his wife and child? And why does Graham insist on spending time with Elizabeth? How can Darcy possibly protect his family from an angel with power over life and death?

In this romantic fantasy, the beloved couple from Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice must contend with both human and unearthly challenges. Are the fates against them? Or will their extraordinary love conquer all?

My thoughts:

I really like JA variations and some are good and some are way off. Death Takes a Holiday at Pemberley is really good.

Darcy is out on his horse and enjoying life with Elizabeth and their son Bennet. When is horse is spooked, Darcy has a near death episode.

Mr. Graham knows as the angle of death visits Darcy the day after and explains why he is there he wants to know and see why Darcy is so happy. In exchange for watching Darcy for a little but he will delay Darcy’s death. Darcy doesn’t really trust Graham, he has no choice but to agree.

Instead of spending time with Darcy as planned, Graham seems more interested in Elizabeth.

We also learn things from other characters that things are not as they seem.

The author did an excellent job with the characters and plot. You will not want to put the book down.

Copycat Killers

Guest post by Maggie Toussaint

Long before I became a mystery writer, I read mysteries, watched crime dramas on TV, and took in a lot of cool movies. These days I read less and go to the movies rarely, but TV shows and movies on TV often fill my evenings. And my choice of programming? Anything with a mystery involved.

True crime programs also hold my interest, and I try to look at the newspaper every day. All of this input stimulates my creativity and helps me write strong, character-driven mysteries.

For many of my books to date, I’ve relied on local history and my imagination to create interesting crimes. I used restaurant fires, crumbling historical buildings, kayak canals, drug trade elements, crooked people who got caught and more to bring authenticity to my mystery and suspense books.

I write cozy mysteries, which means that the violence happens offscreen, so I didn’t know what to do with my interest in serial killers, until DREAMED IT. Some of the more famous serial killers, real or fiction, include Jack the Ripper, Jeffery Dahmer, and Ted Bundy. Their acts are too horrific for a cozy but though newspaper reports I found a way to incorporate a ripped from the headlines case into a cozy. I learned about a Suitcase Killer who disposed of victims in suitcases. I also learned that some bad guys in real life imitate famous killers.

Putting the idea of a Suitcase Killer together with a Copycat Killer, I came up with the working premise of DREAMED IT. This is the second of my “Ripped from the Headlines” inspired crimes in my Dreamwalker Mystery Series. Since the story’s fictional town of Marion is located next to an interstate, this would allow an outsider to use it as a dumping ground.

DREAMED IT opens with a big city crime in a small rural area, and the sheriff is desperate to get in front of it before the big guns and media find out. My amateur sleuth, Baxley Powell is called to the scene to do a touch reading of the suitcase. Things do not go well, and the story continues to unfold from there.

Before I became a writer, I was a scientist for many years, and it is second nature for me to question things. I often have how’d-they-do-that discussions with people because I have to know how things fit together. When it came to a real victim in a suitcase, it was a no-brainer for me to ask, how’d they do that, which led to a second clock-ticking case in the same story.

To reassure all cozy readers, no women or suitcases were harmed in the commission of this book. I hope you’ll check out DREAMED IT and let me know what you think.

Fun fact: I liked to explore places to hide for the game of Hide ’n Seek. I was always looking for places to hid in closets, under beds, behind sofas, even under some chairs. Did you ever hide in tight places as a child?

Former magazine editor “Sugar” Calloway’s life has taken a delicious twist since she launched a community cookbook publishing business with blue-ribbon baker Dixie Spicer. Now these amateur sleuths must solve a small-town murder—without getting burned . .

Sugar and Spice Cookbooks’ newest project is a fundraiser organized by the St. Ignatius Crack of Dawn Breakfast Club, famous for their all-you-can-eat biscuits and gravy events. But when a group member is found dead, Sugar and Spice’s priorities change from raising dough to figuring out who put murder on the menu.

The return of former badboy Nick Marchant has stirred the town’s gossips too. Add a few grudges and some old-fashioned greed over a land deal into the mix, and it’s a recipe for mayhem. And when someone serves up a second helping of murder, Sugar and Spice need to sift the guilty from the blameless, or their next breakfast may be their last . . .

* Includes delicious recipes! *
