Message Deleted
A buzz at Senth’s wrist alerted him to a message. He withdrew his mobile and set the device to read-only mode, rather than bring it up on holovid.
The message required a password, which told Senth who had sent it. His Sen’dai–guild master–and father, Luc Saint-Cyr.
The Guild didn’t accept non-humans, unless they were enslaved to a human member. No one could rise past level ten, unless related to a human member. Guild-arranged marriages and adoptions happened regularly. To keep the Guild happy, Saint-Cyr was Senth’s lord and master and his adoptive father.
Could his Sen’dai send a note the way anyone else would? Of course not. No, the Man had to do it with mystery and ceremony.
Folks in this town never referred to Saint-Cyr by name. You could hear the capital letters when they called him the Man, or referred to him as the Harbinger. His father was the crime lord all the other crime lords wanted to be when they grew up.
“Ooh, big scary Man.” He thumbed off the device. “Please let this be a job and not him thinking I screwed up.” Senth ducked into a coffee shop and made his father’s handsign to the worker behind the counter, then slipped into a back room to access the password function in private. That he had no idea what the password might be did not deter him. It took seconds to break in.
“This is prolly some test to see how fast I can break these suckers.” He opened the message, and then brought the device to his ear.
“A worker at the Guild says he’s met a man who claims you’re family. Come home and we’ll discuss it. Now.” The message ended.
Senth jerked the device from his ear. “No way I heard that right.” He pressed play and brought it to his ear.
“The idBot messaging system regrets that your message has been deleted. Would you like to access another message at this time?”
“No, I wouldn’t like to access another message. I want to hear this message.” He poked at the screen. None of the usual options showed. After several fruitless minutes, he resorted to asking for help. “IdBot, how do I replay the message?”
“Message has been deleted.”
“I know that, you stupid machine. Undelete it.”
“IdBot is unable to comply.”
Senth swore under his breath. “Why?”
“Message was delivered as hear-once-and-delete. Would you like to access another message at this time?”
“No, I wouldn’t, idiotBot. Thank you not very much.” Senth turned off the device and put it in his pocket. “Why is Dad sending me encrypted hear-once messages? What in the worlds is going on?”

Will they both let their reluctance to admit they want more from the other cost them everything?
Nan Meyers returns to her beloved hometown of Willow Springs a broken woman, ten months after leaving for what was supposed to be a short vacation with her brother. For years she’d enjoyed an active lifestyle at the local club owned by her friends, but the trauma she endured while away has stripped her of those pleasures, leaving her determined to get her life back.
Dan Shylock greets the news of his friend and favorite submissive’s return with relief. After Nan cut off all communication with him and her other friends several weeks after going on vacation, her silence had both worried and angered him. Seeing the changes in her upon her return stirs up his suspicions, and when she reveals hints of suffering from an abusive trauma, his protective instincts and determination to help her kick into high gear.
As Dan slowly coaxes Nan back into embracing the pain induced pleasures she once loved, their growing feelings for each other come to the surface. But before either can come to terms with how they feel, the truth about the strange mishaps Nan has been experiencing almost costs her her life. Will Dan get there in time to save her?
This is book four in the Cowboy Doms series but can be enjoyed as a standalone.
Publisher’s Note: This steamy, contemporary Western romance contains elements of ménage, mystery, suspense, and power exchange.

EXCERPT:
“Looks like I’m not the only one unhappy with your long, unexplained absence.” Unable to resist, Dan pinched her chin and turned her face toward him, holding her there even though her eyes darkened with annoyance and she tried to jerk free. “In case you’ve forgotten, you can come to me with anything, tell me anything. I don’t judge, you know that, or you should.” He released her and changed the subject as her expression turned rigid. “I have a new foal, born seven months ago. Pretty little filly. You’ll have to come out and see her sometime.”
Nan’s face lost her rigid irritation and her eyes lit with interest, a familiar look he was relieved to see. She loved horses, and he knew she’d always wanted one of her own, but not until she could buy enough acres to stable it herself. That was part of her independent streak that right now was causing her to remain mute on her reasons for staying away.
“I’d love to.” Her rigid shoulders relaxed with the eagerness in her eyes. “Thanks. Maybe next week, after I get the shop going again. Are you still working with military parolees?”
“Sure, just let me know, and yes, I hired two new guys several months ago.” The troubled vets used the time, space and work he offered to transition back into civilian life and acclimate themselves to their freedom from both drugs and prison before returning to their loved ones or heading out on their own. Of the previous eight men he’d sponsored, only one had lapsed bad enough he’d ended up back on drugs.
Gertie returned with their orders and Dan shoved aside his curiosity and concern to savor spending time with Nan again. The instant rush of excitement upon seeing her again felt damned good, his relief when Connor called to tell him she was back palpable. Even though he itched to get to the bottom of her trouble, he refrained from pushing too hard. He’d run up against the brick wall of her stubborn independence before and didn’t relish starting their reunion on a negative note.
They spoke of everything except about the months she was away and the reason for her extended visit. By the time they finished their lunch, they had rekindled their easy friendship, enjoying it almost as much as before she’d left. His impatience to discover what happened that caused those shadows under her eyes was his only regret as he stood to leave. With luck, once she submitted to him again at the club, he would be successful in getting those answers.
He tossed down a generous tip and reached out to give her hair an affectionate tug, something he’d done countless times before, only to have her jerk away, as if fearing that small prick on her scalp instead of relishing it. Her face whitened and then flushed, the uncharacteristic response heightening his suspicion something dire was going on with her.
Nan slid off the stool, backing away, her retreat a painful kick to his gut. “Sorry. I…”
Dan laid a firm finger over her lips. “Don’t say anything unless it’s the truth.” Dropping his hand, he wasn’t surprised at the mulish set of her mouth or her silence. Sighing in disappointment, he said, “I hope you’ll join us at the club tonight. We’ve missed you.”
Shaking her head, she replied, “I don’t have time, but should tomorrow night.”
He nodded and turned to leave. “See you tomorrow then.”
She waited until he’d taken two steps away before saying, “I’ve missed you, too, and everyone else.”
He swiveled his head to look at her as he settled his hat back on and nodded. “Good to know.”

A fatal hit-and-run in front of Savannah Webb’s glass shop proves to be no accident . . .
A highlight of Savannah’s new glass bead workshop is a technique called flame-working, which requires the careful wielding of acetylene torches. Understandably, safety is a top priority. But as Savannah is ensuring her students’ safety inside, a hit-and-run driver strikes down a pedestrian outside her shop.
The victim is Nicole Borawski, the bartender/manager at the Queen’s Head Pub, owned by Savannah’s boyfriend Edward. It quickly becomes clear that this was no random act of vehicular manslaughter. Now the glass shop owner is all fired up to get a bead on the driver—before someone else meets a dead end.
FROM CHAPTER 1
As Savannah entered the final key to shut down the cash register, she heard a sharp yelp directly in front of Webb’s Glass Shop, followed by a sickening thud. Next, she heard squealing tires and then a roaring engine. Out the front window, she glimpsed a white car flying down the street.
Jacob! Please don’t let it be Jacob. Savannah bolted out, nearly tearing the bell off the door.
Jacob stood outside on the sidewalk as stiff as the tinman from Wizard of Oz. He let out a keening scream, which was overlaid by a howl from Suzy.
Jacob abruptly stopped screaming. Suzy went silent as well.
As Savannah moved to stand in front of him, a yard away, a tsunami of relief rushed over her. She quietly said his name. She was careful not to touch him. A critical precaution to reduce the chances of Jacob having a panic attack.
Savannah noticed that Suzy appeared calm, so Jacob didn’t need his inhaler. He stared down the street without acknowledging her presence. She made no attempt to get his attention.
Savannah followed his gaze out on the street.
Crumpled faceup near the curb lay a woman dressed in khaki trousers and a white Queen’s Head Pub logo shirt.
“Nicole!” Savannah shrieked. Nicole was completely unresponsive. Not even an eyelash fluttered.
Terrified, Savannah became hypersensitive to every sound around her. The murmur of onlookers, the slowing of traffic in the street, the mockingbird
singing nearby.
Nicole was a good friend. She worked in the pub right next door, owned by Savannah’s fiancé, Edward.
Shaking herself into action, Savannah placed two fingers on Nicole’s throat. She detected an irregular heartbeat. It was barely noticeable, and her infrequent breaths were shallow.
She pulled back Nicole’s thick blond hair to reveal heavy-lidded eyes. There were streaks of road filth down her face and her legs didn’t line up properly. From the back of her head, a terrible wound leaked a small stream of blood, which made its way to the curb.
This is bad.
“Call 911,” she yelled to the gathering crowd of bystanders, pointing at a balding man with his cell phone already in hand. “Hurry! She’s still alive.”
The man dialed.
A sour taste hit the back of Savannah’s throat. She knew better than to try to move a victim of trauma. Instead, she gathered Nicole’s limp and clammy hand in both of hers. “Nicole, can you hear me? Stay with me, girl. Help is coming.”

James is my given name, but most folks call me Jay. I live in New York City, grew up on Long Island, and graduated from Moravian College. I spent fifteen years building a technology career in the retail, sports, media, and entertainment industries. I enjoyed my job, but a passion for books and stories had been missing for far too long. I’m a voracious reader in my favorite genres (thriller, suspense, contemporary, mystery, and historical fiction), as books transport me to a different world where I can immerse myself in so many fantastic cultures and places. I’m an avid genealogist who hopes to visit all the German, Scottish, Irish, and British villages my ancestors emigrated from in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Writing has been a part of my life as much as my heart, my mind, and my body. I decided to pursue my passion by dusting off the creativity inside my head and drafting outlines for several novels. I quickly realized I was back in my element growing happier and more excited with life each day. My goal in writing is to connect with readers who want to be part of great stories and who enjoy interacting with authors. To get a strong picture of who I am, check out my author website or my blog. It’s full of humor and eccentricity, sharing connections with everyone I follow—all in the hope of building a network of friends across the world.
When I completed the first book, Watching Glass Shatter, I knew I’d stumbled upon my passion again, suddenly dreaming up characters, plots, and settings all day long. I chose my second novel, Father Figure, through a poll on my blog where I let everyone vote for their favorite plot and character summaries. It is with my third book, Academic Curveball, the first in the Braxton Campus Mysteries, where I immersed myself in a college campus full of so much activity, I could hardly stop thinking about new murder scenes or character relationships to finish writing the current story. Come join in the fun!

Why Write a Cozy Mystery about Snakes?
by Heather Day Gilbert, author of Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been no friend to snakes. When I spot them in the yard (especially around the areas where my children play), they become a target that needs to be eliminated.
However, when I was brainstorming an idea for an unusual cozy mystery series, the thought of exotic pet-sitting popped into my head. More and more, people are getting into exotic pets, and since I was setting the series in the uber wealthy town of Greenwich, Connecticut, didn’t it make sense that residents like that would pay top dollar to make sure their exotic “babies” were well-tended?
Enter Belinda Blake, pet-sitter. One of the first titles I came up with for the series was “Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass,” so it made sense that she’d first be sitting a snake. But what kind of snake?
I did my online research, watched YouTube videos, and decided a ball python (which is a constrictor, but decidedly smaller than a boa constrictor) would be just the ticket. I still felt a little cringey when reading up on the care of these reptiles, but after seeing these relatively docile animals cozying up to owners—even sitting next to them, “watching” TV (check out my Pinterest board here for pics)—I started to lose some of my innate dislike of snakes.
I ran the snake scenes past my critique partner Becky Doughty, who just so happened to have been a missionary kid who had owned a pet BOA constrictor. She helped me figure out how to work the ball python into my mystery in believable ways.
I HAD thought about featuring a tarantula for book two in the series (hey, why not attack ALL our phobias in one series!?), but instead, I decided to feature wolves. Book Two, Belinda Blake and the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, is also available for preorder here.
I truly hope readers enjoy walking with Belinda as she overcomes some of her snake fears with Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass. I’m not saying you have to run out and buy a snake or feel friendly toward all snakes, but maybe you won’t feel quite as horrified if you run into someone who owns a pet snake in the future.
