La Madurez Espiritual no es una Actividad Solitaria

“Pónganse la nueva naturaleza, creada para ser a la semejanza de Dios, quien es verdaderamente justo y santo”.  Efesios 4:24 (NTV)

Como mencioné ayer, tu carácter es esencialmente la suma de tus hábitos; es como actúas habitualmente. La Biblia dice, “Pónganse la nueva naturaleza, creada para ser a la semejanza de Dios, quien es verdaderamente justo y santo” Efesios 4:24 (NTV).

Dios usa Su Palabra, personas y circunstancias para moldearnos. Todos son indispensables para el desarrollo del carácter. La Palabra de Dios provee la verdad que necesitamos para crecer, el pueblo de Dios provee el apoyo que necesitamos para crecer, y las circunstancias proveen el ambiente para practicar ser más como Cristo.

Si estudias y aplicas la Palabra de Dios, te conectas regularmente con otros creyentes, y aprendes a confiar en Dios en circunstancias difíciles, te garantizo que serás más como Jesús.

Muchas personas asumen que todo lo que se necesita para el crecimiento espiritual es un estudio bíblico y oración. Pero algunos temas en la vida nunca cambiarán solo por medio de un estudio bíblico u oración. Dios usa a las personas. Él prefiere a menudo trabajar con las personas más que con milagros, para que dependamos unos de los otros para tener compañerismo. Él quiere que crezcamos juntos.

En muchas religiones, las personas consideraban que los santos y los más maduros espiritualmente, eran aquellos que se aislaban en los monasterios en las cumbres de las montañas, sin el contacto con otras personas.

¡Pero eso es un malentendido enorme! ¡La madurez espiritual no es una búsqueda individual y solitaria!

No puedes crecer en semejanza a Cristo aislándote. Debes estar rodeado de personas e interactuar con ellas. Necesitas ser parte de una iglesia y tener comunión.

¿Por qué? Porque la verdadera madurez espiritual, trata sobre como aprender a amar como Jesús, y no puedes practicar ser como Jesús sin estar en una relación con otras personas.

Recuerda, se trata de amor —amar a Dios y amar a los demás.

Make Up Your Mind to Manage Your Mind

“I have made up my mind to obey your laws forever, no matter what.”

Psalm 119:112 (CEV)

People who learn how to fight the battle in their minds live more effective lives.

If you want to learn to manage your mind, you have to be delivered from destructive thoughts. That isn’t easy because you are in a battle with three enemies trying to control your thoughts. 

The first enemy is your old nature. Paul says in Romans 7:23, “There is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me” (NLT).

Do you ever find yourself doing things you don’t really want to do? That’s the battle in your mind between your old, sinful nature and your good intentions.

The second enemy is Satan. Satan cannot force you to do anything, but he can make suggestions. Those suggestions are incredibly powerful. He is constantly planting negative thoughts in your mind. He’ll use other people or what you watch on TV, or he’ll just throw a thought in your mind.

The third enemy is the world’s value system. Modern society rarely encourages self-discipline. Advertisements tell you things like, “You deserve a break today,” “Have it your way,” and “We do it all for you.” The Bible says in 1 John 2:16, “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” (NIV).

With enemies like that, no wonder people struggle with discouragement, despair, and failure!

So how do you fight this battle? Look at what 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 says: “Though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (NIV).

You have a choice. God didn’t give you just a mind. He gave you a will too! Your mind has to listen to you. The Bible says, “I have made up my mind to obey your laws forever, no matter what” (Psalm 119:112 CEV).

Cómo Cooperar con el Espíritu Santo

“Dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes”. Efesios 4:23 (NTV)

A lo largo de la Biblia vemos una importante verdad ilustrada una y otra vez: El Espíritu Santo libera su poder en el momento en que se da un paso de fe.

Cuando Josué se enfrentaba a una inaccesible barrera, las aguas del río Jordán retrocedieron sólo después de que los líderes avanzaron dentro de una precipitada corriente de agua en obediencia y fe. La obediencia desata el poder de Dios.

Dios espera que actúes primero. No esperes sentirte poderoso ni confiado. Avanza con tus debilidades, haciendo lo correcto a pesar de tus temores y sentimientos. Esta es la forma en que colaboras con el Espíritu Santo, y es así cómo se desarrolla tu carácter.

La Biblia compara el crecimiento espiritual con una semilla, con un edificio y con un niño en crecimiento. Cada metáfora requiere una participación activa: las semillas deben ser plantadas y cultivadas, los edificios deben ser construidos —no aparecen solos— y los niños deben comer y hacer ejercicio para crecer.

Aunque el esfuerzo no tiene nada que ver con tu salvación, si tiene mucho que ver con tu crecimiento espiritual. Al menos siete veces en el Nuevo Testamento se nos dice que “hagamos todo el esfuerzo posible” en nuestro crecimiento espiritual, para llegar a ser más como Jesús (Lucas 13:24, Romanos 14:19, Efesios 4: 3, 2 Timoteo 2:15, Hebreos 4:11; 12:14, 2 Pedro 3:14).

No te quedes sentado esperando que esto suceda.

Pablo explica en Efesios 4:22-24 nuestras tres responsabilidades para parecernos más a Cristo:

Primero, debemos renunciar a la antigua manera de vivir.  “Por eso, deben ustedes renunciar a su antigua manera de vivir y despojarse de lo que antes eran, ya que todo eso se ha corrompido, a causa de los deseos engañosos” Efesios 4:22 (DHH).

Segundo, debemos cambiar nuestra manera de pensar. “dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos” Efesios 4:23 (NTV) La Biblia dice que nosotros somos “transformados” por la renovación de nuestras mentes (Romanos 12:2).

La palabra griega para “transformado” es metamorfosis (usada en Romanos 12:2 y 2 Corintios 3:18), y se usa hoy para describir el asombroso cambio que una oruga experimenta para convertirse en una mariposa. Es una hermosa descripción de lo que nos sucede espiritualmente cuando permitimos que Dios dirija nuestros pensamientos:

Somos cambiados de adentro hacia afuera, nos volvemos más hermosos y nos liberamos para elevarnos a nuevas alturas.

Tercero, debemos revestirnos con el carácter de Cristo desarrollando nuevos hábitos piadosos. Tu carácter es esencialmente la suma de tus hábitos; esta es la forma que habitualmente actuamos.

No te sientes a esperar que el crecimiento espiritual suceda. ¡Sé obediente en esto para que puedas liberar el poder de Dios en tu vida!

Your Life Is Shaped by Your Thoughts

“Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.”

Proverbs 4:23 (GNT)

God is far more interested in changing your mind than changing your circumstances.

We want God to take away all of our problems, pain, sorrow, suffering, sickness, and sadness. But God wants to work on you first, because transformation won’t happen in your life until you renew your mind, until your thoughts begin to change.

Why is it so important that you learn how to manage your mind? Let me give you three reasons.

Manage your mind, because your thoughts control your life.
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts” (GNT). Your thoughts are powerful and have the tremendous ability to shape your life for good or for bad. For example, maybe you accepted a thought someone told you when you were growing up: “You’re worthless. You don’t matter.” If you accepted that thought, even though it was wrong, it shaped your life.

Manage your mind, because the mind is the battleground for sin.
All temptation involves the mind. Paul says in Romans 7:22-23, “I love to do God’s will so far as my new nature is concerned; but there is something else deep within me, in my lower nature, that is at war with my mind and wins the fight and makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. In my mind I want to be God’s willing servant, but instead I find myself still enslaved to sin” (TLB).

One of the reasons you get mentally fatigued is because there’s a battle in your brain 24 hours a day. It’s debilitating because it’s intense, and it’s intense because your mind is your greatest asset. Satan wants your greatest asset!

Manage your mind, because it’s the key to peace and happiness.
An unmanaged mind leads to tension; a managed mind leads to tranquility. An unmanaged mind leads to conflict; a managed mind leads to confidence. An unmanaged mind leads to stress. When you don’t try to control your mind and the way you direct your thoughts, you will have an enormous amount of stress in your life. But a managed mind leads to strength and security and serenity.

“Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (Romans 8:6 NLT).

El Espíritu de Dios está Trabajando en Ti

“Dios trabaja en ustedes y les da el deseo y el poder para que hagan lo que a él le agrada”.  Filipenses 2:13 (NTV)

El trabajo del Espíritu Santo es crear en ti, un carácter parecido al de Cristo.

La Biblia dice, “El Señor… nos hace más y más parecidos a él a medida que somos transformados a su gloriosa imagen” 2 corintios 3:18b  (NTV). A este proceso de cambiarnos para ser más como Jesús se le llama santificación.

No puedes reproducir el carácter de Jesús por tu cuenta. Los propósitos de año nuevo, la voluntad, y las mejores intenciones no son suficientes. Sólo el Espíritu Santo tiene el poder de hacer los cambios que Dios quiere hacer en nuestras vidas. La Biblia dice, “Dios trabaja en ustedes y les da el deseo y el poder para que hagan lo que a él le agrada” Filipenses 2:13 (NTV).

Menciona “El poder del Espíritu Santo”, y muchas personas creen en demostraciones milagrosas y emociones intensas. Pero la mayoría del tiempo el poder del Espíritu Santo es derramado en tu vida de forma silenciosa, de forma modesta, que ni siquiera estás al pendiente o sientes. Él a menudo nos toca con “un suave murmullo” 1 Reyes 19:12b (NVI).

La semejanza a Cristo no es producida por imitación sino por Cristo viviendo en nosotros. Le permitimos a Cristo vivir a través de nosotros. “Y el secreto es: Cristo vive en ustedes” Colosenses 1:27 (NTV).

¿Cómo pasa esto en la vida real? A través de las elecciones que hacemos. Elegimos hacer lo correcto en todas las situaciones y entonces confiamos en el Espíritu de Dios para que nos dé su poder, amor, fe y sabiduría para hacerlo. Debido a que el Espíritu de Dios vive en nosotros, esos dones están siempre disponibles para que los pidamos.

¿Por qué crees que Dios te permite elegir si respondes o no al movimiento del Espíritu Santo en tu vida?Si el Espíritu Santo a menudo trabaja de forma discreta, de forma modesta, ¿qué puedes hacer para ser más consciente de Su trabajo en tu vida?Pídele a Dios que te dé una nueva conciencia del Espíritu Santo y que Él trabaje en ti y te haga más como Jesús. Pídele que te quite el miedo y te dé valor para cumplir tu propósito por medio del poder del Espíritu de Dios en ti.Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? The Battle for Your Mind

“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.”

Romans 8:5 (NLT)

There is a battle going on inside you between your old, sinful nature and your new nature that comes from Christ. If you want to win this battle, you’re going to have to change the way you think.

Why? The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel determines the way you act. If you act discouraged, it’s because you feel discouraged. And if you feel discouraged, it’s because you’re thinking discouraging thoughts. But you don’t have to stay in those thoughts. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts in a better direction.

When Satan gives you thoughts, that’s temptation. But when God gives you thoughts, that’s inspiration. Which are you going to choose? Romans 8:6 says, “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (NLT).

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t choose life and peace over death. But the truth is you have self-destructive thoughts all the time. So what do you do?

Here’s how the Holy Spirit can free you from uncontrolled thoughts: It’s the principle of replacement. If you want to change something in your life, don’t resist that thing; instead, replace it.

If you’re watching television and a show comes on that you know is bad for you, change the channel to something better. If you want to quit smoking but you keep thinking about cigarettes, change your focus to something else. The Bible says you have to replace the old mindset with the new mindset.

You can even ask the Holy Spirit to give you new ideas to think about that will replace the old, bad thoughts. You’ll find that he’ll answer your request. And when you start thinking about something positive instead of something negative, something good instead of something evil, the old will lose its appeal and won’t have its allure anymore. 

So invite the Holy Spirit to have free access to your mind to help replace those uncontrolled thoughts. Ask something like this: “Dear Holy Spirit, I give you permission to give me thoughts any time you want. I’m wide open and I will accept them. I have an open mind to you.”

Talk It Over

The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel determines the way you act. How are you feeling and acting today? Are there thoughts you need to change to feel and act in healthier ways?
The principle of replacement says that, if you want to change something in your life, you should replace it instead of resisting it. What’s a negative thought, impulse, or habit that you’ve been resisting? What can you replace it with instead?
When have you experienced the Holy Spirit giving you new ideas to replace bad thoughts? Do you need to ask him to do that for you today?

Where to find a hope that will not disappoint.

God proved his love for you through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start by praying this simple prayer:

“Dear God, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in Jesus, you’ll forgive me for everything I’ve ever done wrong, and you’ll accept me into your family and bring me to heaven one day to live with you for eternity.

“Jesus, I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I ask you to come into my life as my Lord. Today, I commit my life to you.

“I want to live the way you created me to live—at peace and rested—and to use the remainder of my life to serve you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

La Meta de Dios es tu Carácter, no tu Comodidad

“Por eso, ya no vivan ni se conduzcan como antes, cuando los malos deseos dirigían su manera de vivir. Ustedes deben cambiar completamente su manera de pensar, y ser honestos y santos de verdad, como corresponde a personas que Dios ha vuelto a crear, para ser como él”.  Efesios 4:22-24 (TLA)

Muchas religiones y filosofías de la Nueva Era promueven la vieja mentira de que somos divinos o podemos convertirnos en dioses. Permítanme ser absolutamente claro: nunca te convertirás en Dios o serás un dios.

Esta arrogante mentira es la tentación más antigua de Satanás. Satanás le prometió a Adán y Eva que, si seguían su consejo, serían “como dioses” (Génesis 3:5).

Este deseo de ser un dios aparece cada vez que tratamos de controlar nuestras circunstancias, nuestro futuro y la gente que nos rodea. Pero como criaturas, nunca seremos el Creador. Dios no quiere que te conviertas en un dios; Él quiere que seamos creyentes sabios, asumiendo sus valores, actitudes y carácter. Estamos destinados “Por eso, ya no vivan ni se conduzcan como antes, cuando los malos deseos dirigían su manera de vivir. Ustedes deben cambiar completamente su manera de pensar, y ser honestos y santos de verdad, como corresponde a personas que Dios ha vuelto a crear, para ser como él” Efesios 4:22-24 (TLA).

El objetivo final de Dios para tu vida en la Tierra no es la comodidad sino el desarrollo de tu carácter. Él quiere que crezcas espiritualmente y te conviertas como Cristo. Convertirse como Cristo no significa perder tu personalidad o convertirte en un clon sin cerebro.

Dios creó tu singularidad, así que ciertamente Él no quiere destruirla. La semejanza a Cristo se trata de transformar tu carácter, no tu personalidad.

Dios quiere que desarrolles el tipo de carácter que se describe en las Bienaventuranzas de Jesús, el fruto del Espíritu, el gran capítulo de Pablo sobre el amor y la lista de Pedro de las características de una vida efectiva y productiva (Mateo 5: 1-12, Gálatas 5:22-23, 1 Corintios 13, 2 Pedro 1: 5-8).

Cada vez que te olvides de que el carácter es uno de los propósitos de Dios para tu vida, te sentirás frustrado por tus circunstancias. Te preguntarás, “¿Por qué me está sucediendo esto? ¿Por qué estoy teniendo un momento tan difícil?”  Una respuesta a esto es que la vida se supone que sea difícil. Eso es lo que nos permite crecer. Recuerda, la Tierra no es el Cielo.

Muchos cristianos interpretan mal la promesa de Jesús de la “vida abundante” (Juan 10:10) piensan que significa: salud perfecta, un estilo de vida cómoda, felicidad constante, realización plena de tus sueños y alivio inmediato de los problemas a través de la fe y la oración.

En pocas palabras, esperan que la vida cristiana sea fácil. Esperan el cielo en la Tierra.

Esta perspectiva egoísta trata a Dios como un genio que simplemente existe para servir en tu búsqueda egoísta de la realización personal. Pero Dios no es tu siervo, y si crees en la idea de que la vida se supone que sea fácil, te sentirás desilusionado o vivirás en la negación de la realidad.

¡Nunca olvides que la vida no es solo sobre ti! existes para los propósitos de Dios, no viceversa. ¿Por qué Dios proveería el cielo en la Tierra cuando planeó lo real para ti en la eternidad? Dios nos da nuestro tiempo en la Tierra para desarrollar y fortalecer nuestro carácter para el Cielo.

A veces es difícil ver cómo Dios está trabajando en nuestro carácter en medio de circunstancias difíciles. ¿Qué crees que Dios quiere que hagas cuando no entiendes cómo está trabajando en tu vida?¿Cómo la perspectiva eterna —enfocándote en la recompensa del Cielo – cambia tu manera de enfrentar tiempos difíciles?¿De qué manera tus dones y habilidades pueden ser más efectivos cuando están alineados con los propósitos de Dios?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Who Do You Think You Are?

“The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in GOD protects you from that.”

Proverbs 29:25 (MSG)

If you don’t want to just drift through your life and, instead, you want to break out of discouragement and despair and depression, then you’re going to have to learn to tune some people out. You’re going to have to disregard the people around you who say, “Who do you think you are? You’ll never be able to do that. Forget that dream. It’s never going to happen. You’re never going to be able to change.”

You have to pay no attention to the dream-busters in your life—and there will be plenty of them. When you start listening to them, you’re going to be filled with fear, anxiety, and doubt. It will keep you from launching out and going after the dream God has given you.

You cannot please God and everybody else at the same time! You’ve got to decide who you’re going to live for: the audience of your peers or the audience of one.

Bartimaeus knew that shouting out in a crowd to get Jesus’ attention was going to draw attention and other people’s disapproval. But he was desperate, and he knew it was his only chance to change his life.

Luke 18:39 says, “Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’” (NIV).

The crowd was telling Bartimaeus, “Who do you think you are? Jesus is an important person. He won’t be interested in someone like you.” 

We don’t just hear these kinds of rebukes from others. We say it to ourselves all the time! And, of course, the devil puts all kinds of lies into your mind, like, “You’re not worthy of God’s love,” “You could never be acceptable to God the way you are,” “You’ll never live up to God’s standards,” or “Your past disqualifies you from God’s purpose.”

So many people have no hope because they’re stuck in a rut worrying about what others will think of them if they go after their dream.

The Bible says that worrying about the approval of other people is a spiritual trap. Here’s how the Message paraphrase puts it: “The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in GOD protects you from that” (Proverbs 29:25 MSG).

Either you’re going to fear other people or you’re going to trust in God. You have a choice!

Para Obtener Entusiasmo, Obtenlo en Dios

“Nunca dejen de ser diligentes; antes bien, sirvan al Señor con el fervor que da el Espíritu. Alégrense en la esperanza, muestren paciencia en el sufrimiento, perseveren en la oración”.   Romanos 12:11-12 (NVI)

Para poder alcanzar tus metas, tienes que encontrar la solución para mantener tu entusiasmo durante el largo recorrido.

Ralph Waldo Emerson dijo, “No se logra nada grande sin entusiasmo”. Yo creo eso con todo mi corazón. He encontrado que es verdad en mi vida. Tienes que tener pasión, tienes que tener entusiasmo, o nunca vas a llegar al final.

La mayoría de las personas me consideran un entusiasta, y lo soy. Pero no he sido un entusiasta por una semana o un mes. Mi entusiasmo no ha disminuido en un año o cinco o diez años. He sido un entusiasta consistente acerca de las metas que me he fijado durante más de treinta años.

¿Cómo hago eso? ¿Cómo mantengo mi entusiasmo día tras día a pesar de los retrasos y las dificultades, los callejones sin salida, los problemas, las presiones y las críticas? ¿Cómo puedes mantener tu entusiasmo por más de treinta años?

El pensamiento positivo no es suficiente. Animarte a ti mismo no es suficiente. Hablarte de una forma optimista no es suficiente.

La forma en la que te mantienes entusiasta por toda la vida se encuentra en la palabra ‘entusiasmo’. La palabra entusiasmo viene de la frase griega ‘en theos’; ‘en’ significa lo mismo en español y ‘Theos’ significa ‘Dios’, así que ‘en theos’ significa estar “en Dios”.

Cuando estás en Dios, serás entusiasta. Es el tipo de entusiasmo que no se ve afectado por la economía o el clima o las circunstancias. Es eterno porque tú estás anclado al Dios eterno. Estás en Cristo.

Pablo nos dice cómo hacer esto en Romanos 12:11-12 que dice, “Nunca dejen de ser diligentes; antes bien, sirvan al Señor con el fervor que da el Espíritu. Alégrense en la esperanza, muestren paciencia en el sufrimiento, perseveren en la oración” (NVI).

Si quieres alcanzar tus metas este año, necesitas el poder de Dios. Permanece gozoso en la esperanza, paciente en la aflicción y fiel en la oración.

Haz esta oración hoy:

“Señor mi Dios, No quiero pasar otro día de mi vida sin ti, quiero que estés a cargo de cada parte de mi corazón. Te ofrezco mi cuerpo, me dedico enteramente a ti.

A la luz de todo lo que has hecho por mí, me entrego como un sacrificio vivo en un acto de adoración espiritual.

Humildemente admito que necesito ayuda. Te pido que renueves mi mente. Ayúdame a pensar de la forma en la que quieres que piense. Perdóname por mi orgullo. No quiero pensar de mí más alto de lo que debo. Mi fe necesita crecer, y yo necesito tu ayuda para fijar las metas que sean realistas y puedan ser medidas, para poder realizarlas. Perdóname por intentar cambiar por mi cuenta.

Quiero llenar mi vida con amor. Quiero llenar mi vida contigo. Ayúdame a obtener ayuda en un grupo pequeño. Ayúdame a deleitarme en honrar a las personas, a enfocarme en dar mi vida para que tu tengas cuidado de mis necesidades. Quiero nutrir mi entusiasmo al estar en ti. Ayúdame a estar gozoso en la esperanza, paciente en la aflicción y constante en la oración. Te entrego mi vida. Todo esto te lo pido en el nombre de Jesucristo. Amén”.

Take the Next Step of Faith

“And Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.”

Mark 10:52 (NASB)

I don’t know what your next step is, but I do know this: You have one. God will never be finished taking you deeper in faith. There is always a next step.

Your next step may be to accept Jesus Christ into your life or to be baptized. Maybe you need to join a church, get into a small group, tithe, find a ministry, go on a mission trip, or invite a friend to church.

I don’t know what step you need to take next, but I do know you need to take it.

If you don’t, you’re going to get stuck in a rut. And the only difference between a grave and a rut is the length. If you don’t move forward in faith, you will die. Your heart will grow cold, and you will feel more distant from God. He isn’t going to help you with steps two, three, four, or five until you take step one.

If you’re asking God to help you with something, he may be asking you, “Why haven’t you done what I’ve already told you to do?” Maybe you’ve been planning to do something; stop planning, and just do it.

A couple of days ago, we learned from Bartimaeus’ story, a man who called out to Jesus in faith, believing that Jesus could heal him. Before Bartimaeus met Jesus, he was sitting beside the road. After he received his sight from the Lord, he “began following Him on the road” (Mark 10:52 NASB). 

Which of those two phrases describes your life: sitting beside the road or following Jesus on the road? Which of those two lifestyles do you think is more fulfilling? Which do you think offers more joy, more meaning, and more satisfaction? Which one do you want to represent your life?

There’s only one way to follow Jesus on the road: Take the next step.

Faith is more than believing. Faith is more than thinking, talking, or having convictions about Jesus. Faith is action. It is movement; it is activity. Faith is something you do. In fact, the Bible says in James 2:14, “If people say they have faith, but do nothing, their faith is worth nothing” (NCV).  

Where do you get the faith to make a fresh start? There’s only one source: Jesus Christ.

“Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:30 MSG).

Bartimaeus had no idea that Jesus was going to pass his way that day. To him, it was just another day. But God gave him an unexpected opportunity that offered him a fresh start.

God is giving you the same opportunity. Don’t delay. Take your next step of faith before the opportunity passes you by.

Talk It Over

Are you sitting beside the road or following Jesus on the road today?
What are you waiting on in order to take the next step of faith in your life? What excuse have you been using to procrastinate?
What “next step” will you take today to move forward in faith and follow Jesus?

Is the next step for you to accept Jesus into your life?

No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know when I die, I’m going to give an account of my life to you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to take the step of turning away from my sins and toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so that I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord. I could never be good enough to get into a perfect place.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
