Abraza tu Nueva Identidad

“Tu nombre ya no será Jacob. . . De ahora en adelante, serás llamado Israel”. Génesis 32:28a (NTV)

¡No tienes que quedarte igual! En la conversión, se nos da una nueva identidad. Mira a Jacob en el libro de Génesis. Una vez que confiesa su comportamiento manipulador, Dios le da una nueva identidad.

Observa que suceden tres cosas: Tu nombre ya no será Jacob —le dijo el hombre—. De ahora en adelante, serás llamado Israel, porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.

Dios le da a Jacob una nueva identidad (Génesis 32:28). Esencialmente, Dios dice: “Sé que lo has arruinado todo; sé que eres conspirador, pero veo en ti un príncipe… detrás de todos tus problemas emocionales, todas tus inseguridades, todas las cosas que no quieres que nadie más sepa”. Dios está diciendo a muchos de nosotros: “Detrás de todos tus pecados y ataduras, veo a una princesa / a un príncipe. Puedes ser algo grande. Puedes ser esa persona que formé”.

Dios bendice a Jacob / Israel (Génesis 32:29). En el fondo, deseamos desesperadamente la bendición de Dios. Y si queremos la bendición de Dios, tenemos que dar los pasos que Dios requiere de nosotros.

Dios le dio a Jacob / Israel una cojera (Génesis 32:31). Recuerda, cuando lucharon, Dios dislocó la cadera de Jacob. La cojera de Jacob sirvió como recordatorio diario para depender de Dios.

Dios hace su trabajo más profundo en tu vida cuando trata con tu identidad —la persona que realmente eres y la forma en que te ves a ti mismo. Siempre tendrás tendencia a actuar de acuerdo con la forma en que piensas acerca de ti mismo. Así que Dios hace sus cambios más profundos en tu vida cambiando la forma en cómo te ves a ti mismo.

Él dice: “Déjame mostrarte cómo te veo”. Porque cuando te veas a ti mismo como Dios te ve, tu vida va a cambiar.

To Live with Hope, Remember God’s Promises

“I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope.”

Acts 2:25-26 (NLT)

One of the major causes of hopelessness is an uncertain future. So if you want to live with hope, you must anchor your future in God’s promises to you.

When you buy an insurance policy, that policy promises to cover particular things. When certain things happen, the insurance company promises to pay for it.

Once you know what your policy covers, you don’t sweat it. You don’t worry about the big hospital bill or paying for a new car after yours is totaled, because insurance will pay for it. You don’t worry about what’s covered in the promise.

There are 6,000 insurance promises to you from God in the Bible. Yet we worry because we don’t even know most of them! If we knew them, we wouldn’t be worried.

You don’t know how many years you’ve got left or the highs and lows you’re going to go through. But you already know one thing: You know how it ends! You know what will happen after your life on earth. You know that when you die, you’re going to heaven to be with God forever because he made it possible by resurrecting Jesus. God promises to do that for you, and God cannot lie.

When you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Savior of the world and follow him as Lord, then you cannot lose your salvation. You may want to let go of God’s hand, but he’s never letting go of yours.

In Acts 2:25-26, Peter quotes David and talks about the resurrection: “I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope” (NLT).

When you follow Jesus, you not only have God’s promises, but you also have God’s presence. When your ship is breaking apart in a storm, you can trust God’s promise to be with you.

Your body can rest because you hope in the surest thing there is in this world and the next: God’s Word and his promise to save you, keep you, and be with you.

La Única Manera de Empezar de Nuevo

“Porque ustedes antes eran oscuridad, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de luz (el fruto de la luz consiste en toda bondad, justicia y verdad)”. Efesios 5:8-9 (NVI)

Hace varios años, los funcionarios de la ciudad de Nueva York construyeron una instalación de desinfección de agua utilizando luz ultravioleta para destruir los gérmenes y desinfectar el agua potable de la ciudad, que se canaliza desde unas 100 millas de distancia. En lugar de usar cloro, el sistema usa la energía del sol para desinfectar y desinfectar el agua usando rayos de luz. Desinfectan más de mil millones de galones de agua todos los días.

La luz es un gran desinfectante. Limpia, higieniza y purifica.

La luz de Dios obra de manera similar en tu vida. Las palabras, los pensamientos y las acciones dañinas te enferman espiritual, emocional y, a veces, físicamente. Cuando confiesas tus pecados a Dios, Su perdón te sana, purifica y limpia.

La Biblia lo dice así: “Si afirmamos que tenemos comunión con él, pero vivimos en la oscuridad, mentimos y no ponemos en práctica la verdad. Pero, si vivimos en la luz, así como él está en la luz, tenemos comunión unos con otros, y la sangre de su Hijo Jesucristo nos limpia de todo pecado” 1 Juan 1:6-7 (NVI).

Muchas personas hoy en día están pasando por días oscuros porque cargan con una carga de culpa, vergüenza y arrepentimiento. Pueden parecer exitosos por fuera, pero por dentro están atormentados por sus secretos.

¿Hay alguna forma de hacer borrón y cuenta nueva? ¿Hay alguna manera de empezar de nuevo? Sí, se llama nacer de nuevo. Eso no significa que des vuelta la página y te esfuerces más. Significa que obtienes una vida completamente nueva, donde todo está perdonado. Todo es limpiado por la luz de Cristo, y las tinieblas del arrepentimiento y la vergüenza se disipan.

Efesios 5:8-9 describe lo que significa ser completamente limpio y perdonado de su pecado y nacido de nuevo: “Porque ustedes antes eran oscuridad, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de luz (el fruto de la luz consiste en toda bondad, justicia y verdad)” (NVI).

¿Qué arrepentimiento, culpa o vergüenza, secretos en tu vida necesitan ser limpiados y desinfectados? Solo exponlo a la luz de Cristo. Entonces podrás seguir adelante, lleno de esperanza en Jesús, la Luz del Mundo.

Your Mission Requires the Right Focus

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

Romans 15:4 (NIV)

To live with hope no matter what happens in life, you first have to anchor your identity in what God says about you. Then you have to anchor your life mission in God’s Word.

God has never made anything without a purpose. You know I’ve said this plenty of times! Every rock has a purpose. Every plant has a purpose. Every animal has a purpose. If you’re breathing, then God has a purpose for your life.

There are five purposes for your life, and the fifth one is that you were made for mission. You were made to help other people go to heaven with you. 

You’re going to go to heaven because somebody told you about what God has done for you. Who have you told? Whether you’re a scientist or a singer or a politician or a doctor or a student, the greatest accomplishment you can make with your life is to do something that will outlast your life. Your mission is to help people settle their eternal destiny.

There’s only one way you’re ever going to complete your life mission and the purpose God put you here on earth for. You’re going to have to pay more attention to God’s Word than you do to the world. You have to give more of your life and your time and your focus to studying and knowing God’s Word, the Bible, than you do to anything else in the world.

In other words, you’re going to have to spend a lot less time on Facebook and more time with your face in God’s book. God didn’t put you here to live for yourself. He put you here to get to know him, experience his love, and do the life mission he has planned for you.

Romans 15:4 says, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope” (NIV).

If you’re serious about not wasting your life and fulfilling your purpose, then you need to ask yourself: What do you read the most—social media or God’s Word? What do you listen to the most? What do you talk about the most? What do you give most of your attention and focus to?

When the answer is God’s Word, you’ll have everything you need to do what God created you to do.

Crece a la Luz de la Palabra de Dios

“Jesús habló una vez más al pueblo y dijo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo. Si ustedes me siguen, no tendrán que andar en la oscuridad porque tendrán la luz que lleva a la vida»”. Juan 8:12 (NTV)

Como horticultor, te puedo decir que cuantas más horas de luz tengas, más crecerán tus cultivos. Durante más de 30 años, he usado una bombilla especial para jardinería llamada luz de crecimiento. Emite cierto tipo de luz que hace que crezcan plantas y árboles. Lo usas en áreas donde no hay suficiente luz para que las plantas sobrevivan. Planté secuoyas jóvenes en el lado sombreado de mi casa y usé las luces de cultivo en ellas hasta que alcanzaron la altura suficiente para recibir la luz del sol por sí mismas. Hoy esos árboles miden alrededor de 40 pies de alto.

La luz es la clave de la vida. Cada planta crece por fotosíntesis, que depende de la luz. Los humanos dependemos de la luz para ver y para que los sistemas de nuestro cuerpo funcionen normalmente. Sin luz, no hay electricidad. Sin luz, no hay crecimiento. No puedes vivir sin luz.

Lo que es cierto de la luz en el ámbito físico también es cierto en el ámbito espiritual. En tus días oscuros, cuando el sol se oculta y no puedes ver la luz, necesitas la luz de Jesús para cambiar y ser mejor.

Hay dos maneras en las que cambias: cuando ves la luz y cuando sientes el calor. Una de esas maneras es mucho menos dolorosa que la otra. Si solo cambiaras cuando ves la luz, entonces no tendrías que cambiar cuando sientas el calor.

¿Quieres saber cuál es tu luz de crecimiento? Es la Palabra de Dios. Estudiar la Palabra de Dios te ayudará a crecer en tu conocimiento de Dios y amor por Él.

Efesios 1:16-17 dice: “No he dejado de dar gracias a Dios por ustedes. Los recuerdo constantemente en mis oraciones y le pido a Dios, el glorioso Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que les dé sabiduría espiritual y percepción, para que crezcan en el conocimiento de Dios” (NTV). Cuando conoces la Palabra de Dios, su luz inundará tu corazón. Entonces comprenderás el maravilloso futuro que Dios te ha prometido.

En la Biblia, luz y vida van de la mano: “Pues tú eres la fuente de vida, la luz con la que vemos” Salmo 36:9 (NTV).

La vida está destinada a ser disfrutada, no solo soportada, no solo en Navidad sino durante todo el año. La clave es vivir a la luz de Dios.

Por eso Jesús dijo: “Jesús habló una vez más al pueblo y dijo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo. Si ustedes me siguen, no tendrán que andar en la oscuridad porque tendrán la luz que lleva a la vida»” Juan 8:12 (NTV).

How to Know What God Thinks of You

“We know that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own.”

1 Thessalonians 1:4 (GNT)

If you want to live with hope for the rest of your life, no matter what happens to you, you must first anchor your identity in what God says about you. It will never work if you try to base your identity on what other people say about you or even what you say about yourself.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 1:4, “We know that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own” (GNT).

I don’t need to know what other people say about you, because I know that what really matters is what God says about you. And the Bible says God loves you and has chosen you! 

God says you are valuable and you are acceptable. Other people may not accept you, and other people may say you’re not lovable. But God accepts you and loves you just the way you are—and he loves you too much to let you stay that way.

Do you want to know how much God loves you? Just look to the cross. That’s where Jesus stretched out his arms and said, “I love you this much. I’d rather die than live without you. I love you so much, it hurts. You are worth dying for.”

Jesus is the only person who will have scars in heaven. You won’t have any, but the scars of the cross will be on Christ as reminders for eternity of how much he loves you.

Psychology has discovered that your self-worth tends to be based on what you think the most important people in your life think about you.

I highly recommend that you make Jesus Christ the most important person in your life because what he says about you matters much more than what anybody else says about you.

You don’t have to worry about anyone else’s opinion of you anymore. You can hope in God’s promises of how he feels about you: You are valued, you are accepted, and you are loved.

Conoce a tu Salvador

“(Jesús) Vino a los de su propio pueblo, y hasta ellos lo rechazaron; pero a todos los que creyeron en él y lo recibieron, les dio el derecho de llegar a ser hijos de Dios”. Juan 1:11-12 (NTV)

Nadie es perfecto. ¡Eso es de conocimiento común! He conocido a miles de personas mientras he viajado por todo el mundo, y nunca he conocido a nadie que afirme no tener pecado.

No estoy a la altura de mis propios estándares, mucho menos de los de Dios, y tú tampoco. Todos tenemos defectos, y todos cometemos errores.

Por eso necesitas conocer a Jesús, el Salvador que vino a morir por tus pecados.

El cielo es un lugar perfecto: no hay penas, tristeza ni enfermedad. ¡El cielo supera tus sueños más increíbles! El cielo es perfecto, pero tú y yo no lo somos. Si Dios permitiera que personas imperfectas entraran al cielo, entonces no sería un lugar perfecto. Si Dios nos dejara entrar al cielo, con todas nuestras imperfecciones, entonces el cielo no sería mejor que la Tierra.

Pero Dios tenía un plan: Él envió a su Hijo, Jesucristo, para vivir una vida perfecta en tu lugar. Entonces Jesús murió para pagar por todos tus pecados para que tú no tengas que hacerlo. Puedes ir al cielo simplemente confiando en Él. ¡Qué buena promesa!

Cuando confías en Jesús como Salvador, llegas a ser parte de la familia de Dios, y esa familia durará para siempre.

Dios nos creó a todos. Dios nos ama a todos. Dios tiene un propósito para todos. Pero Dios es sólo el Padre de aquellos que eligen formar parte de su familia cumpliendo con los requisitos familiares: Creer en el Hijo que envió a la Tierra. Esa es la condición.

Dios te creó, pero también te salvó. La razón por la que vino fue para morir por todos tus pecados.

No puedo pensar en una mejor razón para darle tu enfoque y devoción.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cómo, el saber que eres salvo por la gracia y no por tus obras te ayuda a relajarte en tus tareas diarias durante la ajetreada temporada de fin de año?¿Por qué crees que Dios quiere que lo elijas? ¿Por qué no todos pueden llamarlo Padre?¿Cuáles son algunos pasos prácticos que puedes tomar para cambiar tu enfoque a Jesús esta temporada?

Confía en Jesús como tu Salvador hoy

¿Qué mejor momento que hoy para confiar en Jesús como tu Salvador? Si estás listo para entregarle tu vida a Él hoy, entonces haz esta oración:

“Querido Jesús, me has prometido que, si creo en ti, todo lo que he hecho mal será perdonado, aprenderé el propósito de mi vida y algún día me aceptarás en tu hogar eterno en el cielo.

Confieso mi pecado, y creo que tú eres Dios, mi Salvador. Te recibo en mi vida como mi Señor. Hoy, te entrego cada parte de mi vida. Quiero seguirte y hacer lo que me digas.

Jesús, estoy agradecido por tu amor y por tu sacrificio que hace posible que me una a ti en el cielo. Sé que no lo merezco. Y te agradezco que no tengo que ganar ni trabajar para mi salvación, porque sé que eso es imposible. Quiero usar el resto de mi vida para servirte en lugar de servirme a mí mismo. Humildemente te entrego mi vida y te pido que me salves y me aceptes en tu familia. En el nombre de Jesús oro. Amén”.

A Weary Soul Needs a Steady Anchor

“My soul is weak from waiting for you to save me. My hope is based on your word.”

Psalm 119:81 (GW)

The anchor is as old a symbol of Christianity as the cross is. In fact, during the first 300 years of Christianity, believers used the anchor, not the cross, to secretly identify themselves. In a time of intense persecution by the Roman Empire, the anchor was a symbol of steadfast hope—the hope believers had in Jesus Christ.

The hope that sustained the early church is the same hope that we can anchor our lives to today.

The Bible sometimes pictures the problems in our lives as storms, with strong waves and winds that batter against us. And God’s Word, the Bible, is the anchor that stabilizes us in tough times.

Every one of us is going through some kind of storm right now, whether it’s a physical, emotional, financial, or relational storm.

How do you keep having hope when you just keep getting beat up?

You do what David did. You focus on God’s Word, not your weakness.

David said, “My soul is weak from waiting for you to save me” (Psalm 119:81 GW).

Maybe you’ve been praying this to God for a long, long time, just like you’ve been praying for God to change something in your life for a long time. It’s left you feeling weak, worried, worn out, weary, and about to go under. 

But, David continued, “My hope is based on your word” (Psalm 119:81 GW). 

When you establish the Bible as the authority for your life and the basis for your hope—instead of the media or self-help or what other people think about you—then you are anchored to something solid, secure, and never changing. You stop drifting! You stop drifting through life because you have something that’s always true and reliable to hold on to.

“Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth” (Ephesians 4:14 NLT).

Don’t let the shifting winds of culture and other people’s opinions wear you out anymore. You have the steadfast hope of God’s Word—the only thing in this world that does not change.

Encontrarás la Luz de Dios en la Palabra de Dios

“Entre ustedes, ¿quién teme al Señor y obedece a su siervo? Si caminan en tinieblas, sin un solo rayo de luz, confíen en el Señor y dependan de su Dios”. Isaías 50:10 (NTV)

En los días oscuros, necesitas la luz de Jesús. En los días en que no puedes ver el camino a seguir, cuando estás confundido o indeciso, cuando no sabes qué es lo mejor, cuando no sabes qué hacer a continuación, necesitas Su luz.

Cuando estés confundido, las personas bien intencionadas te dirán: “Confía en ti mismo. ¡Solo sigue tus instintos!” Pero cualquiera que lo haya intentado sabe, en la mayoría de los casos, que solo tiene razón el 50 por ciento de las veces.

Tu perspectiva es limitada. Tu luz es débil. Es como usar una de esas pequeñas luces de bolígrafo que caben en un llavero: en realidad no iluminan nada. Y como resultado de confiar solamente en ti mismo, probablemente hayas tenido dificultades para tomar buenas decisiones.

En cambio, esto es lo que la Biblia dice que hagas: “Entre ustedes, ¿quién teme al Señor y obedece a su siervo? Si caminan en tinieblas, sin un solo rayo de luz, confíen en el Señor y dependan de su Dios” Isaías 50:10 (NTV).

No cuentes con tu propia luz. Confía en la luz del Señor.

Si quieres tener la perspectiva y el punto de vista de Dios sobre tus problemas, entonces necesitas leer la Biblia. Necesitas leer y estudiar y saturar tu mente y tu corazón con eso, porque la voluntad de Dios siempre se encuentra en la Palabra de Dios.

Siempre me sorprende la cantidad de personas que esperan que Dios les dé una señal en lugar de simplemente leer las instrucciones que ya les ha dado. Si deseas mantenerte en el camino correcto el año que viene, entonces debes leer la Biblia.

Dios promete guiarte si lo dejas. Él dice: “Guiaré al ciego Israel por una senda nueva, llevándolo por un camino desconocido. Iluminaré las tinieblas a su paso y allanaré el camino delante de ellos. Ciertamente yo haré estas cosas; no los abandonaré” Isaías 42:16 (NTV).

Deja que Dios sea tu guía personal, comenzando ahora mismo. Nunca tendrás que tropezar en la oscuridad si dejas que la luz de Su Palabra ilumine tu vida.

Give God First Place

“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

There are some gifts that God can’t get unless you give them to him. He won’t demand them or take them by force—but when you give them freely, you show how much you love him. One of those gifts is to give him first place in every area of your life.

Exodus 20:3 says, “You shall have no other gods before me” (NIV). When you have anything other than God in first place in your life, that’s an idol. Even good things like family and careers can be idols. But the truth is that you wouldn’t have those good things if it weren’t for God, and they were never meant to take God’s place.

Think of it this way. If you make your career or family the most important thing in your life and you lose them, then your life falls apart. First place should be given to the One who can never be taken from you: God. You can lose everything else you have, but you’ll never lose God.

Here’s how to put God first in five major areas of your life:

F – Finances. Give him the first part of your money by tithing. Before you spend money on anything else, give the first 10 percent to God. It all comes from him anyway, and tithing is one way of seeking God’s blessing on all of your finances.

I – Interests. Give God first place in your interests by making him your primary focus.

R – Relationships. Make your relationship with God first, above all other relationships. Your family and friends will have enormous security knowing that they’re second in your life and that God is number one.

S – Schedule. Schedule time with God before anything else. For many people, it works best to give him the first part of your day with a quiet time. Regardless of when you have your quiet time, be sure to set aside time for God before your schedule fills up. 

T – Troubles. When troubles come, go to God first. Don’t panic; pray. Talk to God about it right away. Make prayer the first choice and not the last resort.

Jesus makes an amazing promise to those who put God first: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).

As you prepare gifts for other people this Christmas season, remember to give God the gift of yourself by putting him first in every area of your life.

Talk It Over

At some point in our lives, all of us put something or someone above God. What might be competing with God for first place in your life today?
Consider your finances, interests, relationships, schedule, and troubles. What step can you take today in one of those areas to put God first?
God promises that he’ll take care of "all these things" when we put him first. What part of your life do you need to trust God for as you put him first?
