No Esperes para Obedecer a Dios

“Me apresuraré sin demora a obedecer tus mandatos”.   Salmos 119:60 (NTV)

El devocional de hoy está escrito por Tom Holladay, Pastor de enseñanza en la iglesia Saddleback.

Esta semana, mientras pensamos sobre obediencia y como vivirla, quiero que observes las cinco acciones que tomó José que demostraron su obediencia a Dios.

Cuando el ángel apareció a José en un sueño, le dijo a José, “José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María por esposa, porque ella ha concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo” Mateo 1:20 (NVI). Así qué, eso fue lo que hizo José: “Cuando José se despertó, hizo lo que el ángel del Señor le había mandado y recibió a María por esposa” Mateo 1:24 (NVI). Él no se quejó, ¡simplemente lo hizo!

Hay una cercanía refrescante en la relación entre José y Dios. Cuando Dios habla, José actúa.

Si crees que Dios te ama y quieres vivir una vida de obediencia en respuesta a su amor, entonces así es como debes responder. Vivir en obediencia inmediata a Dios es un tipo de vida que respira emoción y alegría.

He tenido la oportunidad de encontrar a muchos hombres y mujeres de fe alrededor del mundo. Todos ellos son diferentes unos de los otros, pero todos ellos tienen una cosa en común: Cuando ellos sienten que Dios está diciendo que hagan algo, ellos no se quejan. Ellos dan un paso adelante y lo hacen.

La Biblia dice en 1 Juan 5:3, “En esto consiste el amor a Dios: en que obedezcamos sus mandamientos. Y estos no son difíciles de cumplir” (NVI). Así que si lo que Dios te pide que hagas se siente como un peso, ¿Qué está mal? Usualmente es la postergación. Cuando no actuamos en el acto, se hace más difícil hacerlo después. Pero cuando lo hacemos en el momento que Dios nos lo dice, tendremos una libertad refrescante en nuestras vidas.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre obediencia inmediata y obediencia tardía? ¿Cuáles son los efectos de cada una?¿Qué es lo que Dios te está llamando para hacer? ¿Es una llamada que necesitas hacer? ¿Una acción que necesitas realizar?Cualquier cosa que esté pidiendo que hagas, escríbelo inmediatamente, dile a Dios que deseas hacerlo, y pídele que te de la fortaleza que necesitas para lograrlo.Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? You Must Be Willing to Pay the Price

“Then he gave Rebekah gold and silver jewelry and clothes. He also gave expensive gifts to her brother and mother.”

Genesis 24:53 (NCV)

Today we’re going to finish our journey through the story of Eleazar and the big goal he had of helping his master, Abraham, find a wife for Abraham’s son, Isaac.

We’ve already learned that to be successful in achieving goals, you must:

Determine your present positionDescribe exactly what you wantFind a promise from GodAsk him for helpIdentify the barriersCreate a step-by-step planBe patient and persistent

The final two steps are these: You must enlist a team for support, and you must be willing to pay the price.

First, enlist a team for support. You’re never going to fulfill your vision by yourself. Success is never a one-man show. You’ve got to involve other people. It takes teamwork and cooperation. 

An African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” 

Eleazar did this. He enlisted Rebekah’s parents and relatives for support. He got the cooperation of the people around him.

The Bible says: “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12 NLT).

The last thing you must do to accomplish a dream is this: You must be willing to pay the price. There’s always a price tag for fulfilling a dream; there’s always a cost for reaching every goal.

The Bible says Eleazar was willing to pay the price: “Then he gave Rebekah gold and silver jewelry and clothes. He also gave expensive gifts to her brother and mother” (Genesis 24:53 NCV).

Great goals require great sacrifice. Ask yourself, “What will it cost? What am I willing to pay? Is it worth the cost?”

Let me give you some advice. Never desire the success of another person without first finding out what they gave up for it. They may have given up their health or their family or their integrity. Maybe they even gave up on God. 

Some things are not worth giving up. But some are worth sacrificing for a greater cause.

Friends, I’ve noticed that a lot of people give first-class allegiance to second-class causes. You need to give first-class allegiance to first-class causes.

The greatest use of your life is to invest it in those things that will outlast it. Make the rest of your life the best of your life.

Talk It Over

Do you tend to surround yourself with a team for support or go it alone in life?

Obediencia Bíblica: Amor + Confianza + Acción

“Si me aman, obedezcan mis mandamientos”.   Juan 14:15 (NTV)

Todos estamos familiarizados con la historia de la Navidad. ¿Pero alguna vez te has detenido para ponerte en los zapatos de José? Aquí tenemos a un hombre que descubre que su prometida está embarazada, y dice que fue visitada por un ángel que le anunció que el bebé que espera es de Dios. ¡Y quiere que José le crea!

En un instante el mundo de José se vino abajo. Esta no era la forma en que se suponía que su vida tenía que ser. Simplemente no tenía sentido.

¿Conoces la sensación? Tal vez tus finanzas se desploman repentinamente, o comienza una serie de despidos en tu trabajo, o recibes la noticia de una crisis de salud en tu familia. ¿Cómo lo vas a manejar? ¿Qué haces cuando las cosas no tienen sentido?

José escogió hacer lo que Dios le dijo que hiciera, y eso cambió todo. Decidió obedecer a Dios, aunque no comprendiera lo que estaba pasando.

En nuestros días, la palabra obedecer tiene una connotación negativa. Vemos la obediencia como una decisión forzada, no decidida, por hacer algo que no queremos por simple temor al castigo.

Pero este no es el tipo de obediencia que vemos en la Palabra de Dios. En la Biblia, obediencia significa: amor + confianza + acción.

Comienza con amor, como Jesús lo dice en Juan 14:15: “Si me aman, obedezcan mis mandamientos” (NTV). La obediencia viene de saber que Dios te ama y tú le correspondes con tu amor.

Muchísima gente piensa que la obediencia tiene que ver con tener temor a Dios, pero Dios quiere que veamos la obediencia hacia Él como expresión de una relación de amor. Y del amor sale la confianza. Si confías en lo que Dios te está diciendo y crees que Él te ama, eso te llevará a la acción.

Debes tener los tres, pues la acción sin amor es un simple ritual religioso. Y amor sin acción son solo palabras.

José fue capaz de aceptar lo que María y el ángel le dijeron, debido a su relación con Dios. Él sabía que Dios lo amaba, y él amaba a Dios. Confió en Dios y tomó la decisión de hacer lo que Dios le pidió. Y a causa de eso, la vida de José sigue impactando vidas hasta el día de hoy.

¿Cómo has experimentado los beneficios de obedecer a Dios en las pequeñas cosas de la vida?¿Cómo puedes modelar en tus hijos tu relación con Dios, que es motivada por el amor y te lleva a la obediencia?¿Por qué la confianza es tan importante en una relación de amor?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Patience and Persistence Will Bring Success

“But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!”

Habakkuk 2:3 (TLB)

If you don’t make plans in life, you’re just going to drift. As we’ve been learning in Genesis 24, the story of Eleazar gives helpful steps for getting where you want to go.

We’ve already learned why it’s important to:

Determine your present positionDescribe exactly what you wantFind a promise from GodAsk God for helpIdentify the barriersCreate a step-by-step plan

Today we’re going to look at another step: Be patient and persistent.

Accomplishing big goals in your life isn’t going to happen overnight. The bigger your goal, the longer it will take. The more significant your goal, the more time and energy will be involved. Reaching goals takes time and discipline. 

Nothing great is ever accomplished without patience, persistence, determination, and endurance. I suggest that you set big goals and spend the rest of your life going after them. 

Eleazar did this. Genesis 24:21 says, “The servant watched [Rebekah] in silence, wondering whether or not the LORD had given him success in his mission” (NLT). And Genesis 24:33 says, “Then food was served. But Abraham’s servant said, ‘I don’t want to eat until I have told you why I have come.’ ‘All right,’ Laban said, ‘tell us’” (NLT).

He was an example of great patience and persistence.

Here’s the point:  For you to reach your goals, you’re going to have to learn how to delay gratification.  

The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people do things unsuccessful people are unwilling to do.

Successful people often do things they don’t feel like doing. Successful people know how to delay gratification. They do the right, tough thing before they do the fun, enjoyable thing.

The Living Bible paraphrase says, “But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!” (Habakkuk 2:3). 

God says it’s going to happen—but it’s going to take a while. One of the marks of maturity is learning the difference between no and not yet. 

And God is more interested in what you are than what you do. He’s much more interested in your character than your career. Because you’re not taking your career to heaven. You are taking your character. So while you’re working on your goal, God is working on you.

Talk It Over

Think about something big you’ve accomplished. How long did it take you to reach that goal?
How did God work on you while you worked toward your goal?
As you think about the big goals you have today, what is one hard thing you need to do before a fun thing you’d like to do?

God wants you in his family.

God made you to love you, and one of the places you see that most clearly is on the cross. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God made it possible for you to become part of his family for eternity. No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know when I die, I’m going to give an account of my life to you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for everything I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me.

”Jesus, thank you making me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I believe in you, Jesus, and accept you as my Lord and Savior. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Arrepentimiento: Cómo Cambiar tu Piloto Automático

“Dejen que Dios los transforme en personas nuevas al cambiarles la manera de pensar”.  Romanos 12:2b (NTV)

Imagínate en un lago en un bote de velocidad con el piloto automático puesto hacia el este. Si decides cambiar de rumbo y dirigirte hacia el oeste, tienes dos formas posibles para hacer el cambio de dirección del bote.

Una forma es tomar el timón y forzarlo físicamente para ir en dirección opuesta a la que está programado el piloto automático. Con solamente tu propia fuerza podrías sobrepasar el piloto automático, pero sentirías constantemente la resistencia. Tus brazos acabarían cansándose del estrés, dejarías ir el volante, y el bote iría de inmediato hacia el este, al lugar hacia donde fue internamente programado.

Esto es lo que pasa cuando tratas de cambiar tu vida con tu fuerza de voluntad: Dices: “Me obligaré a comer menos… haré más ejercicios… dejaré de ser desorganizado e impuntual”.

Sí, la fuerza de voluntad puede producir un cambio a corto plazo, pero también crea un constante estrés interno porque no has tratado con la raíz. El cambio no se siente natural, por lo que finalmente renunciarás y rápidamente volverás a tus viejos patrones.

Hay una manera mejor y más fácil: Cambia tu piloto automático. ¡Cambia la manera en que piensas! La Biblia dice. “Dejen que Dios los transforme en personas nuevas al cambiarles la manera de pensar” Romanos 12:2b (NTV).

El Nuevo Testamento llama a este cambio mental el arrepentimiento, que en griego significa literalmente “cambiar de opinión”. Te arrepientes cada vez que cambias tu forma de pensar adoptando la forma en que piensa Dios: sobre ti, el pecado, Dios, otras personas, tu vida, tu futuro, y todo lo demás. Tomando la perspectiva y la actitud de Cristo.

To Accomplish Your Dreams, Don’t Drift Through Life

“This is my request. I will ask one of them, ‘Please give me a drink from your jug.’ If she says, ‘Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!’—let her be the one you have selected as Isaac’s wife.”

Genesis 24:14 (NLT)

In Genesis 24, Eleazar provides an example for how to be successful as you pursue the dreams God has given you.

So far you’ve learned that you need to —

Determine your present positionDescribe exactly what you wantFind a promise from GodAsk God for help

You must also identify the barriers between you and your goal. Ask yourself, “Why don’t I have it already? Why am I not who I want to be? What’s between me and this goal?” 

Write down the roadblocks. Are the obstacles—financial, educational, emotional, relational, or something else? 

Look at the roadblocks honestly. Faith does not deny reality. Faith says, “Yes, I see the problem, but I believe God is bigger than the problem.”

Once you identify the barriers, create a step-by-step plan. That’s what Eleazar did.

The Bible says, “Then he loaded ten of Abraham’s camels with all kinds of expensive gifts from his master. . . . He made the camels kneel beside a well just outside the town. It was evening, and the women were coming out to draw water. . . . ‘O LORD, God of my master Abraham,’ he prayed. ‘. . . This is my request. I will ask one of them, “Please give me a drink from your jug.” If she says, “Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!”—let her be the one you have selected as Isaac’s wife’” (Genesis 24:10-12, 14 NLT.)

What is Eleazar doing? He’s looking for a woman of character, and he’s got a plan:

1. Go to the watering well where the women hang out.
2. Set up the test to see if she will offer water to his camels too.
3. If she passes the test, give her expensive gifts.
4. Ask about her family.
5. Get invited to her home.
6. At her home, share his purpose.
7. Pop the question. 

He had a simple, step-by-step-by-step plan that he thought out in advance. 

You need to do this too. You need to think through a course of action to address the roadblocks you wrote down. If your obstacles are educational, how can you get the training you need to reach your goal? If your obstacles are relational, how can you heal a relationship to achieve your goal?

Achieving a goal is a lot of work, but the alternative is to drift through life. If you drift, life will be determined by other people—it will be done to you rather than you directing it. Create a plan today to reach the godly goal God has given you.

Aislado no puedes Crecer Espiritualmente

“Pensemos en maneras de motivarnos unos a otros a realizar actos de amor y buenas acciones. Y no dejemos de congregarnos, como lo hacen algunos, sino animémonos unos a otros, sobre todo ahora que el día de su regreso se acerca”. Hebreos 10:24-25 (NTV)

Algunos de nosotros dudamos en comprometernos a desarrollar un plan intencional de crecimiento que requiera responsabilidad o relación con otros porque creemos que el crecimiento espiritual es un asunto personal y privado. Elegimos creer que cada persona se desarrolla a su manera y a su propio ritmo.

Esto es una desviación de la verdad. La idolatría del individualismo nos ha influenciado incluso en la forma en que pensamos en el crecimiento espiritual. Muchas de las enseñanzas sobre la formación espiritual son egocéntricas y centradas en nosotros mismos sin ninguna referencia a nuestra relación con otros cristianos.

Esto es completamente anti-bíblico e ignora gran parte del Nuevo Testamento. Los cristianos necesitamos relaciones personales para crecer. No crecemos aislados de los demás. Nos desarrollamos en el contexto del compañerismo.

Una y otra vez en el Nuevo Testamento encontramos esta verdad básica: ¡Los creyentes necesitamos relaciones personales para crecer! Hebreos 10:24-25 dice, “Pensemos en maneras de motivarnos unos a otros a realizar actos de amor y buenas acciones. Y no dejemos de congregarnos, como lo hacen algunos, sino animémonos unos a otros, sobre todo ahora que el día de su regreso se acerca” (NTV).

Dios quiere que crezcamos en una familia.

Ask God for Help

“‘O LORD, God of my master, Abraham,’ he prayed. ‘Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham.’”

Genesis 24:12 (NLT)

Eleazar’s actions in Genesis 24 provide a great model for how to fulfill the dreams God has given you.

From his story over the last several devotionals, you’ve learned to

Determine your present positionDescribe exactly what you wantFind a promise from God

Next, when you’re looking to reach a big dream in your life, you need to ask God for help.

Genesis 24:12 says, “‘O LORD, God of my master, Abraham,’ he prayed. ‘Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham’” (NLT).

Is it ok to pray for success? Yes, it’s in the Bible! What’s the alternative? “God, make me a failure”? Friend, you don’t even have to pray that one. All you have to do is do nothing and you’ll fail at life. 

Of course, God wants you to succeed. He wants you to be all he made you to be. He wants you to develop the talents he’s given you. He wants to bless you so you can be a blessing to other people.

Now, he doesn’t bless you so you can live for yourself and spend everything on yourself. God does not bless selfishness or self-centeredness. But he wants to bless you so you can be a blessing to others.

Listen to me closely: If your success helps others and if your success honors God, you’d better be praying for it! God wants you to help other people, and he wants you to honor him. So you can pray, “God, give me success. Help me to be what you want me to be.” 

Your prayers reveal two things. 

One, they reveal how serious you are about your dreams.  If you’re not asking God for something in your life, you don’t really care about it that much.

Did you know that sometimes God delays answering your prayers to see if you’re really serious? He’s seeing if it’s just a passing whim. Will you forget it the next day? If you don’t care enough to pray about it more than once, God will see that it’s obviously not a deep desire. 

Two, your prayers also reveal how much you’re depending on God. Because if you never pray about something, you’re depending only on yourself in that area.

Eleazar knew he desperately needed God’s help to fulfill his goals. And so he prayed for success. How desperate are you for God’s help with your dreams? Are you praying about it?

El Crecimiento Espiritual debe ser Intencional

“Lleven a cabo su salvación con temor y temblor, pues Dios es quien produce en ustedes tanto el querer como el hacer para que se cumpla su buena voluntad”. Filipenses 2:12b-13 (NVI)

El crecimiento del alma humana requiere un compromiso para crecer. La persona debe querer crecer, decidir crecer y hacer un esfuerzo para crecer.

El crecimiento espiritual comienza con una decisión. No tiene que ser una decisión compleja, pero si debe ser sincera. Cuando los seguidores de Jesús decidieron escoger su camino, no comprendían todas las implicaciones de su decisión. Ellos simplemente expresaron el deseo de seguirle, y ese fue el comienzo de una emocionante travesía del alma. Jesús tomó esa simple pero sincera decisión y edificó sobre ella.

En Filipenses 2:12b -13, Pablo ofrece una mirada hacia el crecimiento espiritual mientras hablaba a gente ya creyente: “Lleven a cabo su salvación con temor y temblor, pues Dios es quien produce en ustedes tanto el querer como el hacer para que se cumpla su buena voluntad” (NVI).

Noten que dice “lleven a cabo” —no “trabajen para”— su salvación. No existe nada que puedas hacer por ti mismo para salvarte espiritualmente; Cristo se hizo cargo de eso con su vida, muerte y resurrección. Lo importante es notar que Dios tiene una parte en nuestro crecimiento —pero también nosotros. Debemos hacer un esfuerzo intencional para poder crecer.

Claim God’s Promises

“The LORD, the God of heaven, brought me from . . . the land of my relatives. And he promised me, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ The LORD will send his angel before you to help you get a wife for my son there.”

Genesis 24:7 (NCV)

Over the last few devotionals, we’ve been looking at how Eleazar succeeded in the big goal Abraham had given him. His response models how you can chase and accomplish the dreams God has given you.

So far we’ve learned that—to accomplish your God-given dreams—you must:

Determine your present positionDescribe exactly what you want

Next, you must find a promise from God.

Did you know that God makes over 7,000 promises to you in the Bible—promises of security, safety, provision, success, stability, wisdom, and strength? These promises are like blank checks, just waiting for you to claim them! Most people go through life never claiming any of the promises of God—but you can!

God makes these promises because he wants you to learn to trust him. If you dream big, God-given dreams, you’ll find that fear will often try to stop you. Claiming a promise of God helps you focus on his provision instead of your fears. If you focus on the problems or the what if’s, you’ll never get to around to starting. 

You must find a promise from God to hold on to for hope

The Bible says in Genesis 24:7, “The LORD, the God of heaven, brought me from. . . the land of my relatives. And he promised me, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ The LORD will send his angel before you to help you get a wife for my son there” (NCV).

If God told you that an angel was going to go before you in your goal, would that give you confidence? Oh yeah!

But you don’t need an angel. Because dozens of times in Scripture, God has already promised to be with you. He will be with you everywhere you go.

You may not have always felt God’s presence, but there has never been a time in your life when he’s not been with you. And when he’s with you, he can give you the confidence to believe you’re going to succeed in accomplishing his goals with his help. 

If you’ve got a big God, you need to have big goals. Instead of basing your goals on what you can do, base them on what God can do. Base your goals on the promises of God—all 7,000 of them.

Talk It Over

Has fear or worry every derailed one of your goals?
Think about a current goal you have. Is that goal based on what you think you can do or what you think God can do?
Is fear standing in the way of you setting a goal that you believe God has given you? Claim a promise from the Bible today to encourage yourself to set that goal. Write the promise down and put it somewhere you can read it every day!
