Sitting is not the enemy

You’ve read the titles – sitting is the new smoking, sitting kills, sitting makes a pancake out of your sexy bootie and your prostate…and of course it’s the reason you will have a heart attack or worse yet, die from all cause mortality. Roland often warns me that if I don’t stop doing XI will be killed by all cause mortality. Studies say. Macabre.

Yet, sitting is a serious business, as you spend so very many hours in the seated position – hips and knees flexed, spine flexed, and a pelvis whic...

Chicken [No] Tortilla Soup

I’ve been making soup from scratch for years, so I have my old standby recipes. Chicken Tortilla Soup, or Chicken [No] Tortilla Soup as I like to call it, is one of them.

Tortilla Soup is Leftover Soup

Tortilla soup (like so many other great soups) started off as a leftover soup. Not that it is a leftover, but in that it uses leftovers to make the soup. As such, it’s never, ever the same. Depends on what you have as leftovers. In Mexico, apparently, they have leftover tortillas quite often. I...

Coconut Milk Banana Ice Cream

A couple of weeks into your 30 Days of Real Food and your sweet cravings are ridiculous. I’m not saying to go hog wild on paleo sweets, especially if you feel like you’re addicted to sugar, but for those of us who want the occasional compliant dessert on a hot day…

Banana “ice cream” isn’t really ice cream at all, but that’s a technicality. I’m just using the quotation marks this one time. you know what I mean when I say “ice cream,” right?

Note that you have to think ahead with this one. Buy...

Health Hacking vs Health Habits

The internet is filled with ‘hacks’ to take your health to the next level, but people need a few health habits before a hack will even make a dent.

Health Hacks vs Health Habits

Butter in your coffee, dark chocolate for the anti-oxidants, drinking cold water, timing your food, whatever. Those selling you on healthhacks [usually] mean well, and often have a degree of truth behind them, but they are designed with a specific person in mind – The person who wants to micromanage their nutrition, fi...

Roland on The Wordslinger Podcast

Talking eating, moving, and living well with my friend, Kevin Tumlinson
“People freeze because they can’t be perfect.” – Roland Denzel

I didn’t remember saying that, but that’s definitely how I feel. For so many people it’s all or nothing. They want to eat organic, non-gmo, preservative-free everything, and when they can’t, they hit the drive-thru, instead. Don’t be like that. Every step you take toward health makes you incrementally more healthy, and these things add up.

Whoa… I better go...

Conversation with a Diabetic

The line for coffee was long, and the guy at the head of the line ordered a Diet Coke.

“Is Diet Pepsi okay?”

Diet Pepsi was fine for him, but back at the end of the line where I was, his ordertriggeredcommentary on the taste of diet drinks. Everyone had their favorites (Coke Zero if I have to choose, btw).

I mentioned growing up on Tab and Fresca, as my mom was a type 1 diabetic. The woman in front of me hated diet drinks, period. She grew up on Diet Shasta (yuck). She’s been a type 2 diabet...

The Sleep Hygiene Checklist

Like it or not (believe it or not), improving your sleep might be the single most important lifestyle change you can make.

Not enough quality sleep can lead to poor quality work, less work, overeating, insulin resistance, less energy, becoming overweight, and more. Once you have these things working against you, more bad things are sure to follow!

Luckily, enough quality sleep leads to better productivity, less fatigue, more movement, and a better ‘metabolism.’

Yep, true fact.

Improving your...
