The Friday Four: Is Anyone Reading This?

Happy Friday! You know what that means… It’s time for another Fabulous Friday Four. And, as my kind friend, Jamie, just pointed out, I’ve been a bit lax (my word, not hers) in posting the Friday Four lately. Sorry! Honestly, I wasn’t sure anyone was reading my Friday ramblings.

So, on that note…

1.Let’s Discuss Something

So that I know you’re reading, let’s discuss something…

What can we discuss?

Something controversial, maybe…

I know…

Dress codes in public schools – Should there be one?

My d...

Starting a Sequel

Inspiration-2

Sometimes I struggle to begin a story. Especially with a sequel to another book. Weird, right? I mean the characters are already developed. The setting is there and waiting for me to drop some action into it.

But the pressure of adding to a story that readers have already read and loved sometimes keeps me from even starting. Because once a story is out there, it’s no longer just my story. It belongs to all of us. We all bring expectations to what happens next.

That’s a lot of pressure to g...

Plotting a New Story: Some Thoughts

write what you fear

A few notes off the top of my head about plotting…

1.I love that feeling you get when you look at the blank page and think of all the possible ways you can mess up your characters lives. Then, after you’ve put them in those horrible places, you work like hell to help them fight their way through obstacles and bad times to eventually find their way back to the hope of a happily ever after.

2. I spend (have spent) a great deal of time reading books on the craft of writing. I’m a big believer...

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF A WRITER DECIDING WHAT TO WRITE NEXT

Now, that I’m in the formatting stage of Tracked (sending to typo checkers later today), I’m seriously trying to decide which book to concentrate on next. I have plots and ideas for three very different books in my head. I’ve already crossed one off the list for now, so I’m down to two.

I’ve loosely outlined many scenes for the two remaining stories. And they’re both screaming for attention from me. I must choose today as I’m already behind schedule.

So… what’s a writer to do?

1. I’m going to...

The Fabulous Friday Four

It’s been a crazy week, so let’s get to it…

1.Chicago Is My New Second Favorite U.S. City

My family and I had a blast in Chicago last week.

We went to Navy Pier and rode the ferris wheel (you know, the one in Divergent). We ate at Native Foods (my new favorite chain restaurant that serves only vegan food). TWICE! It’s that good. We toured the University of Chicago campus. It’s beautiful! We went to the Museum of Science and Industry and to the Field Museum (where wevisited one of t...

What are you willing to give up in exchange for something better tomorrow?

I love how Seth Godin can, in a very short blog post, make you realize something hugely grand! And today I’m thinking about how much work it takes to achieve “our” greatness.

What we do in the short term could be sabotaging what we desire to achieve in the long term. Sometimes we have to give up something (or everything) in our short term to even see the possibilities of our long term.

What are you willing to give up in exchange for something better tomorrow?
