Book Review: Kyland

Kyland (A Sign of Love) by Mia Sheridan: Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY TAURUS. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
TeriLyn's thoughts: 5+++ "Everyday. For You." Stars

This book was NA PERFECTION! It was just....everything.

Mia Sheridan stands as a master of her class. Her New Adult stories evoke the rawest emotions from me to the point that I'm glued to my Kindle reading her beautiful prose; laughing, crying, hurting, and peacefully rejoicing.

In Kyland Sheridan made me HURT. She made my heart race with this story of finding love in the place you believed you'd never find anything redeeming again. I was nothing short of fully invested in this romantic journey of finding freedom, hope, and peace in most unlikely of places.

Sheridan's writing perfectly balances love vs. angst with challenges and questions leaving the reader sitting on the edge with her unpredictable plots and expanse of emotions. Kyland is layers of meaning and symbolism embedded in every action and reaction. It's subtle nuances full of emotion and depth. There isn't one sentence in this book out of place or useless in moving the plot. Everything has meaning, everything draws you into Kyland and Tenleigh's story further. You crave the heart break and pain as much as the happiness and love because Mia Sheridan makes you addicted to the story, to the feelings she so eloquently expresses.

As escaping a life of poverty and misfortune remains the focus of both Kyland and Tenleigh they form an unbreakable bond of love and trust muddling the once formidable stance of leaving Denville, Kentucky. Is it a bond that can withstand betrayal? Heartbreak? Tested loyalty?

Neither Kyland and his ambition nor Tenleigh and her hope expected each other but stormed into each others lives so effortlessly the end result could only be devastation. The ambition and pride they each hold onto despite their bleak existence turns into much more as Tenleigh transforms the desolate area they live in to something more majestic for Kyland.

I'd be remiss not mentioning the vivid pictures Sheridan paints of the dire realities Kyland and Tenleigh face. The way Sheridan portrays their reality links us to them in the most intimate of ways, she lets us into their minds exposing their most delicate vulnerabilities.

The characters themselves make the story. This is very much a love story focusing mainly on these two people. The secondary characters, while very important and interesting, don't compare to the beauty of Ky and Ten.

Kyland is simple. He's lonely. His existence suits itself towards false notions and tragedy. He's beyond smart and wants to start anew with a life he feels he can accomplish with hard work. In a beyond complicated situation loving Tenleigh is simple. The subtlety of Kyland holds his beauty.

Tenleigh is hopeful. She's an optimist. With an impossible situation at home, Tenleigh never gives up hope. Her brightness shines through the pages. Her honesty astounded me. The steadfast belief in Kyland in her heart provided good cause for the lengths she would go to protect him. An admirable heroine.

The way their story unfolds surprises you. There were times I thought I had the whole thing figured out only for Ms. Sheridan to twist and turn the plot in a completely different direction.

Kyland hails as a story of hope; hope Tenleigh naturally possessed, hope Kyland learned to possess. Masterfully, Sheridan gives glimpses of hope to her readers about a love soul deep, love you never even realized you had to give - just like she did with Kyland and Tenleigh. The simplicity of the story boggles my mind because of the complexity of the emotions enticing you with every turn of the page.

Mia Sheridan wrote this natural, all-consuming passion between a man and woman in the most complicated of circumstances - a story that rivals any in it's class. This is the story of Kyland and Tenleigh. If you're a lover of New Adult you MUST read Kyland.

Favorite Quotes:
"Frankly, it was exhausting, but it was the hand we'd been dealt, and we did what we had to because we had no other choice."

"I want to do something that matters - that really, truly makes a difference. And I want to recognize that thing when it shows up."

"This girl. My girl."

Book Review: The Untouchables

The Untouchables (Ruthless People #2) by J.J. McAvoy: One Secret. Multiple Casualties.

Everything Melody Callahan has ever been told about her past is a lie. Her father lied. Her husband lied. But like all secrets…they come out. Not only is her mother, Aviela, alive but she won’t stop until she tears down everything Liam and Melody have spent the past year building.

With a new target on their back and the media now focused on their family as the Presidential election approaches, Liam and Melody must fight on two battlefronts. Melody is torn between being in love with Liam and wanting to kill him for lying to her. Being in love and showing love are two different things in her world. Liam wants to do anything to protect his family even if that means hurting the people he loves.

Family is everything… but what happens when they’re out for your blood? Everything they have been through is nothing compared to what is coming...

Warning: This book contains adult language and subject matter including graphic violence and explict sex that may be disturbing for some readers. This book is not intended for readers under the age of 18
TeriLyn's thoughts: **The Untouchables generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

I have a hit or miss/love and hate relationship with The Untouchables and I'll do my best to try and relay why. This story picks up from book one chronicling the lives of Liam and Melody Callahan, crime bosses extraordinaire plus their circle of family and employees who surround them.

The relationship between Liam and Melody I absolutely love. J.J. McAvoy astounds me with the levels of passion and heat she exhibits through these two characters. Liam and Mel have a love/hate relationship with each other that borders on crazy but it's so convincing and entertaining I can't get enough of their romance. On top of the fact they are who they are with the drama of their lives unfolding - it makes me for excellent dialogue and banter between these two and between them both together and separate with their family.

Their family is what I'm not so keen on meaning the points of view from so many different people. These books are unique in the fact I've never read a story with so many characters speaking. It overwhelms me and way too often I have go back to re-read to understand who's conveying what to me in the story. The dynamics of this family are so vast, so much happens to all of them that, IN MY OPINION, the story would be so much better if all the dynamics were relayed to us ONLY by Liam and Mel.

There is no doubt the plot entertains me and that I totally love the romance between Liam and Melody. However, are they main characters? Is everyone a main character? Differentiating between so many people speaking and trying to focus on the motivations of each character proves too much for me. I want to believe in two characters and what they're telling me and it's hard for me to really get into a story when I can't do that. I often found myself skimming parts just to get back to either Liam or Mel. I will admit the ending left me breathless as I do believe it was intended to do and I look forward to knowing where Liam and Melody end their journey.

If you're looking for crime drama with two characters who's romance is enthralling and many points of view from many characters then The Untouchables is your story!

Book Review: Come Here, Go Away

The fifth, and final, book in the series releases January 30th. Here are the reviews for the first four!

Book One:

TeriLyn's thoughts:

**Come Here, Go Away (Part One) generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

4 Challenging Stars

This novella series starts off with the residual affects from a literal bang, or rather two bangs. Ambrose and Tori, both accused and acquitted of murder, meet under working relationship circumstances. Their first meeting is charged with raw intensity Tori finds hard to understand as the feelings are new to her. She's a woman tempted by danger it seems and Ambrose peaks her curiosity. It never fails I enjoy the quick-witted, humorous, no non-sense personalities of Clark's heroines. Ambrose, an arrogant and innately sensual man hires Tori to train his daughter in self-defense but seems taken with Tori even though he's shrouded in a cloud of mystery.

We learn the diluted, violent pasts of each character as the story moves forward garnering interest from the reader. Moving quickly from beginning to end, the plot sets up for something big to happen then leaves us hanging at the end.

Book Two:

TeriLyn's thoughts:

**Come Here, Go Away (Part Two) generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

4 Tempting Stars

Part Two continues where part one left us previously. The strange attraction between these two characters grows as questions are answered and trust is established from Tori to Ambrose. The energy between these two is palpable as the push/pull of their relationship strengthens.

There are many questions left in Part Two in need of answers with so much mystery surrounding the seemingly rich and powerful Ambrose - Tori seems to have put herself in the danger zone. Clark does a great job here of drawing us into the characters once again to deliver an ending with shock value and more questions.

Book Three:

TeriLyn's thoughts:

**Come Here, Go Away (Part Three) generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

5 Trapped Stars

Once again the serial starts where the last left off and opens in a big way. Tori's character suspects Ambrose of wrong doing just as the reader is questioning his credibility to Tori. The suspense of the actions that take place here leaves you breathless. Ms. Clark makes us trust easily in what Tori is feeling and her instincts rather than making assumptions.

Tori's relationship with Rose grows substantially in Part Three making Tori even more likable to the reader. This part ends in the best cliffhanger yet as we're left wondering "Who's done it?" and "How will Tori survive this latest attempt on her life?".

Ms. Clark's writing vividly depicts the action of the story, ebbing and flowing with the ups and downs of the story structure. These books are easy, quick reads full of suspense and heat.

Book Four:

TeriLyn's thoughts:

**Come Here, Go Away (Part Four) generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

5 Questioning Stars

So, Part Four.... I don't even know what to say because I have so many questions! A lot goes in Part Four where we're left wondering about the suspense of Tori's life. How much more can she take? Will Rose be able to handle what's happening to her? I love the relationship that's taken root between Rose and Tori even as the horrors of their lives unfold. And Ambrose! The reader goes back and forth with this guy just as much as Tori wondering what his role is in the plot of the story and how much involvement he really has yet we trust him at the same time. Lots of emotions, lots of suspense, and lots of fun in this installment.

As I've stated before, this series is continually moving forward. The author does a great job making the plot move with the action and suspense leaving you hooked. The serials are relatively short, I read all four in one evening. And while part four ends in another cliffhanger, it's not as cliffie as the rest but I still can't wait for book five to see the conclusion. If you're looking for something short, suspenseful, and fast to read this is your series!

Alec's lip quirked before he shook his head and looked down to the kitchen drawers. “Are you eating and then packing or packing then eating?”
Was that a serious question?
“Eatin' first... duh,” I replied.
Alec blew out an extra amount of air as he smiled. “Sit down then, I'll make you something.”
I shook my head. “Thanks for the offer, but I'm just goin' to have some yogurt and fruit.”
Alec raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
I deadpanned, “I've been talkin' the past week about dietin'.”
Did he listen to anything I say?
Alec glanced down at my body then back up to my head. “It's working, you look great.”
He was so full of it.
“Oh, bite me!” I grunted. “I haven't lost any weight yet, you lick arse. Stop lookin' to get some extra points with your silly compliments.”
Alec grinned. “I'm not fishin' for points, I was just pointing out that you look great. Even if you lose a little bit of weight you will still look great. What does that tell you?” he asked.
I shrugged my shoulders. “That you're a chubby chaser?”
Alec laughed. “No, smartass. It means you look great as is. Nothing you do can improve how beautiful you are, Kitten. You're naturally stunning.”
I stared at Alec and snorted.
“I'm not having sex with you today.”
“You say that everyday and guess what? We still have sex everyday... twice yesterday if I recall, three times if you include last night.”
“I get it,” I growled. “I have a weakness for your cock. No need to rub it in me face.”
“There is always a need to rub my cock in your face.”

Title: FoolproofAuthor: Jennifer

  GoodReads
A summer of seduction...Jules Carmichael needs to get her
life together. Pronto. School's been hell, there was that tiny stint
in rehab, and worst of all, she's lost her cushy summer job. The only available

Recovering from a brutal break-up and taking a hiatus from college, Ryan

It's a brilliant distraction, and Jules is a tantalizing target. But the
“steps” work a little too well, because he and Jules are definitely,
uh, flinging. And it's only a matter of time before Ryan's foolproof plan
starts to seriously unravel...

Purchase Foolproof
 Amazon  |  Barnes & Noble  |  iTunes  |  Google Play  |   Kobo
TeriLyn's thoughts: Foolproof is the second installment in Jennifer Blackwood’s Drexler University series but can be read as a standalone novel. This New Adult story, told from the points of view of both the hero and heroine, is college based about two people fighting to discover what they want from their future while struggling to make their families understand it’s a decision each of them has to make on their own. Ryan and Jules meet while working in an office supplies store Ryan’s father owns. After a shaky start to their friendship, endless banter and flirting ensues.
The banter and flirting between these two characters is definitely my favorite part of the story. Without the spark of snark the author provides or the clever flirting I'm not sure I would have finished Foolproof. Ryan and Jules, together, are quite witty and irresistible to each other even though they’re each fighting that undeniable attraction. I also enjoyed how their relationship developed even though at times it was juvenile. However, I felt disconnected from the characters. The depth of the story being not much more than a current, fast-paced situation. I didn’t feel as if I was being told a story and couldn’t get into the flow of the writing so it was just on okay New Adult read for me. I have not read book one in the series and being I wasn’t enthralled completely with Ryan and Jules’ story I’m not in any hurry to read book one or continue with the series.

BlurbI was ordinary. Nice. He was extraordinary. And he wasn’t always nice.

Moody and difficult, brilliant and beautiful, Kes scared me and he protected me. He could be incredibly hurtful and incredibly thoughtful. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for me. He challenged me, he took me out of my safe little box and showed me the world could be magnificent. He was everything I wasn’t.

Aimee Anderson is ten when the traveling carnival first comes to her nice little town. She doesn’t expect her world to change so completely. But meeting Kestrel Donohue puts her life on a different path.

Even though she only sees him for the two weeks of the year when he passes through her home town, his friendship is the most important of her life. As a child’s friendship grows to adult love, the choices become harder, and both Kes and Aimee realize that two weeks a year will never be enough.

Lori's thoughts: When I started reading this book, it somehow slipped through that it is series. I enjoyed it enough that I will probably continue reading the series, but I hope I don't have to wait too long because this really has me intrigued. Kes makes it hard to be liked. He's charming. He's hot. He's just so closed off. They say actions speak louder than words, and his actions say he loves Aimee, but you'll never hear him admit it. In fact, he never tells her much of anything. He's had a hard, tough life. The life of a carnie. I really loved the world building with this book. The slow easy burn. I was a little uncomfortable with their romance at such a young age, but feel that it was a necessary part of the storyline. This is the kind of book that started when they were both kids at the age of 10. It progresses through the years. Long distance relationships are difficult, at best. Let alone ones where you only get to see the other person once a year for a very short time.
While I loved this book, and will definitely continue with the series, there were some things that I found a little sketchy. The sneaking in the bedroom window all the time, and never getting caught. The sneaking out ... not getting in trouble. Maybe in other people's houses that's a likely scenario, but I can't imagine it would have been in mine.
Four traveling, dare-devil hearts!

Book Review: Parting Chances

Parting Chances (Fighting Chance #1) by Caylie Marcoe: The road of Haley Cavanaugh’s life has been filled with cracks, potholes and detour signs. Her mom’s cancer forced her to grow up too fast and her brother has moved across the country instead of sticking around when she needs him most. Now, her parents are forcing her to move out. They say she needs to follow through with the plans she’s set for herself, but Haley is torn between her dreams and her family’s reality. The only thing she has to look forward to is living with her best friend, Kyler.

What she doesn't need right now? Eli Park. Haley remembers him as Kyler’s boyfriend’s geeky roommate, but he’s anything but geeky now. Now, he's downright hot. And Haley cannot get him out of her head.

It would be easier if they didn’t have class together five days a week. Or have weekly study dates. And if she didn’t spend way too much time with Kyler at Eli’s house. But, the closer he gets and the harder she falls, the more Haley pulls away. Her heart is too fragile to end up broken on the side of the road. She thinks she’s got it under control until Eli brings home another girl and Haley realizes what she has to lose.

As Haley’s life is turned further upside down, will she be left to pick up the pieces of her heart alone?
Liza's thoughts: This book was an emotional roller-coaster to me. I laughed, smiled and cried at different times throughout this book. It was almost like parts of me was in this book and my heart was experiencing everything she was. I have stopped and rewritten this review twice, because you need to experience the emotions of what is going on with Haley as the story unfolds. How does what is happening around her shape, make or break her? Can a heart that Haley is not sure even feel whole be open to dating or more?

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. The plot and character development is great and well supported. I cannot wait to read more from this author. She is creative and knows how to grip your heart.

Julie's thoughts: “Eleven Weeks” by Lauran McKellar is book two in the Crazy in Love Series and is Stacie’s story. In case you forgot or haven’t read the first book, Stacie is Kate’s best friend. Although the second book could stand alone, I would recommend you read these in order, especially since they run parallel, and the second book references events from the first book.

I have to admit that I liked the first book more than this one. I connected with Kate in a way that I never could with Stacie. I also fell in love with Lachlan and just didn’t feel much for Michael at all. The relationship forming between Kate and Lachlan was so sweet and slow. It felt real and natural to me, at least for where these two characters were in their lives. The relationship between Stacie and Michael was off for me. It felt as if they barely knew each other in high school, after that, they had a few run-ins and a few texting conversations. Then all of a sudden, I’m supposed to buy that both of them have liked each other since 9th grade, without ever letting the other know?

One thing that I did enjoy about this story was that it runs parallel to the first book. We get to see Stacie’s perspective on a few scenes from Kate’s story. It was interesting to see the difference in Kate’s view and Stacie’s reality. Because I knew what was coming, I found myself hoping and praying that Stacie would wake up from a nightmare and help me out by giving Kate’s book a different outcome. I was heartbroken all over again.

All in all, this was a good story. It just lacked the power that the first book had for me. I would recommend the series to those who enjoy contemporary romances that deal with serious issues (sickness, death, etc.) that fall somewhere between YA and NA. This second book has a little more sexual content than the first (which I’d label as YA), but is still pretty tame compared to most NA.
