Book Review: Risking Ruin

Risking Ruin by Mae Wood: Marisa Tanner's most important client, multi-billion dollar family-owned Brannon Company, has been sued by nine of its employees for sexual harassment. Marisa is a pro at handling sexual harassment allegations, but will she be able to handle the CEO's prodigal son as well as she can handle the lawsuits?

Clients are off-limits and Marisa could lose her law license and livelihood, but Memphis playboy Trip keeps making strong plays for her.

Their attraction is undeniable and chemistry electric. Can she have her career and Trip, too, or will she have to choose?

A steamy debut novel by Mae Wood, "Risking Ruin" is a stand alone novel that blends the tone of chick-lit and the sensuality of contemporary romance to create a landscape filled with strong characters in the lush environment of Memphis, Tennessee.
Emma's thoughts: A great chick-lit romance. The tone to this book hooked me from the outset.

Marisa is a lawyer that regularly handles sexual harassment suits for one of the major companies in Memphis – Branco.
I really liked Marissa as she was relatable, worrying about her appearance and trying to appear professional, all while feeling not quite adequate. The moment where she first meets Trip really sealed the deal with how I felt about her and it was a laugh out loud moment. Nothing peeves me more than a ‘perfect’ protagonist and Mairsa has her imperfections which just made me like her even more.

Trip is the son of the CEO at Branco and he’s just acquired the position of General Counsel at Branco too. A famed playboy, Trip oozes charm and sex appeal and he can’t keep his blue eyes off Marissa. As we progress through the novel, it becomes clear that Trip has genuine feelings for Marissa and the interaction between the two is really enjoyable. He’s a loveable character and possibly my new book boyfriend.

I found the pace more than satisfactory and the conversation and inner thought witty and charming. More than that, I loved the mystery as Marissa and Trip attempted to solve the reason behind the high number of sexual harassment claims. All in all, I really enjoyed this read. The only downfall for me was some over description in places and fancy synonyms that threw me off for a moment. I had no idea décolletage means neck!

Smart, sweet, funny and sexy. A four out of five from me.

Book Review: The Problem with Crazy

The Problem with Crazy (Crazy in Love #1) by Lauren K. McKellar: The problem with crazy is that crazy, by itself, has no context. It can be good crazy, bad crazy ... or "crazy" crazy--like it was when my ex-boyfriend sung about me on the radio." Eighteen-year-old Kate couldn't be more excited about finishing high school and spending the summer on tour with her boyfriend's band. Her dad showing up drunk at graduation, however, is not exactly kicking things off on the right foot--and that's before she finds out about his mystery illness, certain to end in death. A mystery illness that she could inherit. Kate has to convince everyone around her that her father is sick, not crazy. But who will be harder to convince? Her friends? Or herself? The Problem With Crazy "is a story about love and life; about overcoming obstacles, choosing to trust, and learning how to make the choices that will change your life forever.
Julie's thoughts: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

The “Problem with Crazy” is book one in Lauren McKellar’s Crazy in Love series and the first of her books I’ve ever read. It is also the hardest book I’ve had to review in a long time. I can’t decide how high I want to rate it. I loved it to a point. Then, I hated it and Ms. McKellar. Seriously, I was so angry, I couldn’t feel the overwhelming sadness that I was supposed to feel…and that made me angrier. Halfway or so into the book, I KNEW what was coming. Without reading a single review, I knew what was going to happen, knew I was going to hate it, but the story was SOOOOOOO good. I read, praying I was wrong and that Ms. McKellar wasn’t the evil author I knew she was going to be. I couldn’t help myself. The thing is, I felt it was so unnecessary. Everyone in the story was already dealing with so many sad, depressing issues. I felt that this last thing was a dump of crappier crappiness that life dealt everyone. I skimmed the rest of the chapter until I got to the next part of the story, where everyone was trying to move forward. At that point, I was able to read again, but I didn’t fall into the rest of the story like I did the first ~80%. Yet, even now, I’m pissed off. If the story made me feel that strongly, does it deserve a higher rating?

Outside of the unnecessary thing from above, I really did love the story. It wasn’t a light, easy read, but I felt (for the most part) it was real. The main character, Kate (18) and her mom are dealing with a lot. I read some of the reviews last night (to see if anyone else was as pissed as I was; they weren’t), and some felt that Kate was immature and selfish, but I felt as if her actions and thought process regarding her dad and his illness were very believable. She was selfish and immature at times, exactly like most teenagers would be, especially considering her dad had walked out on them the year before, and more recently, came to her high school graduation drunk. Finding out why someone does something doesn’t make you instantly change your perception and feelings.

In the end, I’m going with four hearts. Any book that can ruin my birthday, making me cry myself to sleep, was written by an author who knows how to draw a reader in. I have the second book in the series, and I’m scared to read it. I don’t want my heart to break again, but I do want to fall in love with characters. So, I’ll start it tonight.

Release Day: Come Here, Go Away Book 4

Welcome to Book Four in the five-week long reading experience of my new serial novel: COME HERE, GO AWAY.

What is a serial novel? It is one, long saga, told episodically. COME HERE, GO AWAY is a very steamy, angsty, emotionally charged and flawed romance between a feisty self-defense instructor and a jaded billionaire who may or not be responsible for the death of his ex-wife. It will be told over a five-week period, each installment available every Friday, beginning January 2, 2015 for the low, low price of 99c for each episode!

Follow along with Tori and Ambrose as their roller-coaster-ride of a romance unfolds.

COME HERE, GO AWAY is the story of the steamy, screwed-up romance between Victoria "Tori" Isley and Ambrose Flynn. A couple of complete opposites brought together when Flynn--a smoking hot billionaire--hires Tori to train his daughter in self-defense.

Flynn was accused of hiring a hit-man to kill his ex-wife due to their bitter divorce and custody battle. Though Flynn was acquitted, the killer was never found and some still insist he's guilty. His daughter moved back home with him, and now, Flynn's convinced someone is going to kill her. Flynn maintains he had nothing to do with his ex-wife's murder and believes it was motivated by revenge. When Flynn hires Tori to give his daughter private lessons in self-defense at his mansion. Sparks fly!

Early Praise:

Part Four:
Oh me, oh my!!
Now this story has REALLY taken a turn I didn't see coming. And I have no clue as to what is going on.

Tori and Rose are in a real pickle and as they try to make sense of what’s going on around them, we find Rose in peril in more ways than one.

I want to give more details, but I’m trying to avoid spoilers. Basically Tori must try to remain clam whilst also trying to look after and keep rose calm.

This book was the most fast paced so far and so full of mystery and suspense. At this point I’m really feeling for Flynn – what he must be going through, poor man! And Rose, arghhh – I need to know what’s going on!!! Can’t wait for the next installment.

Get the beginning of the story with Love Survives

My heart belonged to Branch and Brooks Valentine since we were children, when we were all too naïve to know what that even meant. We didn’t understand that when we became adults, love would change us. I had to make a choice and when I did, it ripped our bond apart. Brooks left town, and he took half of my heart with him. It was difficult, but I coped and planned my future with Branch. I thought I’d made the right decision. I loved him and I always had.
Brooks showed up to be our best man the night before our nuptials. After drinks and too much reminiscing, I ended up in bed with the wrong brother. To avoid the humiliation and the fact that I’d ruined all of our lives, I left Branch and the only family I’d ever known.
That’s where my story should have ended.
Two years, one beautiful little girl and an abusive marriage later, I was standing there staring at the man that would always hold my heart.
The only question was…
Would I give it to him
I’m Katy Michaels and this is my story.

Author: Cassia Leo
Genre: Contemporary romance
Release Day: February 20th

About The Way We Fall:
From New York Times bestselling author Cassia Leo comes a twisted and passionate love story that pushes the boundaries of loyalty.

Maybe we shouldn't have fallen so fast and so willingly.

Maybe we shouldn't have moved in together before we went on our first date.

Maybe we should have given our wounds time to heal before we tore each other to shreds.

Maybe we should have never been together.

Houston has kept a devastating secret from Rory since the day he took her into his home. But the tragic circumstances that brought them together left wounds too deep to heal.

Five years after the breakup, Houston and Rory are thrust together by forces beyond their control. And all the resentments and passion return with more intensity than ever.

Once again, Houston is left with a choice between the truth and the only girl he’s ever loved.

Exclusive Excerpt:
“I need to talk to you about the work situation,” he says as he follows me out. “I got the contract, but I want to make sure you’re okay with this before I sign it.”
“You want to know if I’ll be okay working with you?”
I slide the key into the doorknob and Houston places his hand over mine to stop me from turning the knob. “I can’t go in there with you. Please stay out here until we’re done talking.”
I shake his hand off and turn around to face him. “There’s nothing to talk about. You have to sign the contract. The way I feel about working with you shouldn’t matter.”
“But it does matter. I don’t want to upset you. You were there first.”
I can’t help but laugh. “So this is a territorial thing? You think because I was there first that I have some sort of right to keep you out?” His left eyebrow shoots up the way it always does when he’s confused and it nearly renders me mute. “Houston, if I didn’t work there you wouldn’t think twice about signing that contract. So that’s what you should do. Just… please stop making this into something it isn’t. We hardly know each other anymore, and that’s the way it’s going to remain.”
He swallows hard as he lets this sink in. “I guess you’re right. I’m sorry I bothered you. I only wanted to… Never mind. I’ll get going. I have to get up early to go sign that contract. Not that you care.”
He shakes his head in disappointment as he walks away and I’m glad I don’t have anything solid in my hand other than Skippy’s leash or I might throw it at the back of his head. So I’m the one who doesn’t care? Ugh. Typical Houston and his endless psychological games.
Maybe I should have told him to walk away from the contract, but that would have meant admitting that he still has a strong hold over me. It also would have been the truth and the truth has never gotten me into trouble. In fact, the truth is something my previous relationship with Houston was sorely lacking.
Nevertheless, I don’t need to right the wrongs we made while we were together. I don’t need to tell Houston that the sight of him makes my throat dry and my stomach flutter. He doesn’t need to know that I still go to sleep with scenes from our life together playing on repeat in my mind. Or that sometimes I wake up with his name tumbling from my lips, the remnants of dreams where he never left and nightmares where he hovers just out of reach.
Before Wednesday, the last time I had seen Houston was the day after he met me at the Planned Parenthood clinic. I didn’t ask him to come, and I don’t know how he found the date and time of my appointment, but he was there when we pulled into the parking lot. Lisa, a girl from my Social Inequality class whom I’d had coffee with a couple of times, had graciously agreed to take me to the clinic. The moment I saw him leaning against his truck, I knew I had to send Lisa home. Houston would insist on taking me back to the apartment after the procedure, to watch over me.
It was the last thing I wanted, to have Houston doting over me after terminating the pregnancy. But it was also the only thing I wanted. It was as if he was performing the last rites on our dead relationship.

Leaving New York City to join a hunting expedition in Alaska, Greg’s plans are turned upside down when he is shot on Gwich’in land and ends up on Sarah’s operating table. In the absence of a qualified doctor, Sarah must operate to save his life. Without the means to support herself, Sarah agrees to the questionable arrangement, but she soon finds herself in even more trouble. Her new problem is that she is falling in love with this infuriating man, and the choices she now must make are much more difficult than the simple act of saving a man’s life.Together, Sarah and Greg must both decide whether they can overcome the vast differences between them, or if the indivisible line that separates their worlds will ultimately pull them apart.
IL pull quote
Indivisible-Line-3D-Paperback ~~EXCERPT~~For the first time since he had been brought in the clinic, Sarah got a good, long look at him. She noted the perfect blond hair that fell on the side of his face—matted but still perfect. His features were rather forbidding, even in his unconscious state. The defined jawline framed well-proportioned lips that were pale and parted slightly. The suggestion of dimples on either cheek made her ache to see him smile. Then there were the long, dark eyelashes and the contoured nose, all coming together to create a striking, attractive package that kept her eyes glued to his face.
Her heart began to race. What is wrong with me? Shaking off another wave of nausea, Sarah closed her eyes and concentrated on breathing. Her knees weakened underneath her, but she kept on inhaling and exhaling. A few more minutes and it would be over.In her short life, Sarah hadn’t met a man who evoked the well–documented “butterflies-in-the-stomach” phenomenon. Now here she was, staring at a complete stranger with her heart banging against her chest in a frenzy. This man was just too perfect, too beautiful almost. She was even gladder she’d managed to keep him alive. He’d make a woman happy someday, if he hadn’t already. Instinct made her eyes travel to the man’s ring finger, and her heart skipped when she found it bare.Goodreads Add to Want To Read List
