Book Review: Smoldered

Smoldered (The Electric Tunnel #2) by Rachel Blaufeld: Asher Peterson is a self-made man, owner of the Electric Tunnel, Sin City’s hottest adult entertainment spot. Brazen and formidable in designer T-shirts and motorcycle boots, he seems unflappable whether he’s making his rounds through the decadent decor of the Tunnel, or whipping through the desert heat on his bike. But inside he is a shattered man, desperate to understand what unconditional love from a woman feels like.

Hiding the effects of his emotionally stunted youth behind a gritty persona, and keeping his fractured soul buried deep while seeking out his baser instincts, Asher is convinced he is man enough to leave the past in the past. The only clue to his broken soul is his deep-seated need to provide safety and a good life for emotionally damaged women within the glamorous walls of his strip club.

Fooling himself that he deserves little in life, Asher keeps his big heart tightly guarded with everyone but Sienna Flower, his friend, business partner, and headliner. Until, that is, the night he runs into his childhood friend, Natalie Parker. While trolling a rival strip club, perusing their offerings for his own personal pleasure, he collides with his past. Coming face-to-face with a woman he only knew as a girl, he’s shaken when he finds the dark-haired beauty in a precarious position. Now all grown up, she’s a hardened soul who reminds him of where he came from, and stirs within him the need to protect yet another woman.

Known as Nat to most everyone, Natalie is a single mom to Quinn. But when she’s under the bright spotlights in a thong, she’s known as Natasha or Nataleigh Dallas. A girl who once had everything going for her, she’s now a jaded stripper with only room for her son in her life, and has erected impenetrable barriers around her heart. The strength of those walls is challenged the night a man she has known since childhood steamrolls his way back into her life, flashing those smoky-gray eyes that have always melted her.

A man she has loved from afar since she was a young girl, one who lights fire to her walls, burning deeper, setting everything ablaze––smoldering her.

Asher and Natalie, two people who are equally tormented by their own demons, set out to rescue each other as part-time lovers in a torrid, desperate workplace affair. Thinking they can remain friends while keeping their hearts at a safe distance, they find themselves at odds when their situation morphs into a messy, tangled mess.

Ripping free of each other proves impossible as they learn that the very web that connects them goes much deeper than they ever expected.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Smoldered generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

You know those books that you’re excited to read because you met the main character in a previous book and something about that person tied you up in knots making you believe he or she would be an awesome main with a riveting story to tell? Smoldered is that book and Asher Peterson is that man.

I read book one of the Electric Tunnel series and really enjoyed it. Asher caught my eye from first time he was introduced in book one thanks to his bad boy exterior and soft affection for Sienna. With a strong feeling his story would hold the ability to knock my socks off; I went to into Smoldered with socks on. Rachel Blaufeld – I commend and thank you for indeed knocking them off and opening my heart to Asher Peterson.

To fully enjoy Smoldered I would most definitely read Electrified first even though it features two different main characters, the back story is important as questions are answered. Unlike its predecessor, though, this story wasn’t as light and optimistic; no, this story is much darker and better because of it.

Smoldered is an edgy, hard traveled journey with not only an anti-hero but an anti-heroine as well. Two people hailing from the underbelly of Vegas nightlife, two people who saw big things for themselves outside of Vegas but who instead made something of themselves in the place they thought they could escape. Smoldered is the story of beautiful wings flying from decaying, misguided roots.

Asher and Natalie literally embody the exact opposite of traditional romance yet their story, riddled with mistakes and tragic character flaws, encompasses the deepest seeds of the best kind of romance. These heart-wrenching mistakes and half-truths plaguing both characters build an unbreakable connection between them and the reader. Things left unsaid emotes feeling neither know how to handle creating a malevolent storm of angst and conflict within themselves, outwardly to each other and the motley crew of family at the Electric Tunnel they all call home, and for the reader. There were times I wanted to throw my Kindle, to choke Asher or slap Natalie, but those feelings, those emotions perfectly represent the astounding writing and story building structure of this gifted author. These characters are who they are, no apologies and the reader feels every part of that.

There’s so much I want to say about Asher and Natalie, so much to rave about regarding the structure of the plot, the roller coaster ride of twists and turns lurking in the pages. So much about the knowledge we get from the dual points of view plus an added bonus of an additional character point of view. Mix these elements with the development of the sordid relationship between Asher and Natalie balanced with the relationships between them and the secondary characters making us remember the glory in families we create with people we love because of forgiveness and acceptance. I can’t go into immense detail; I’d spoil a phenomenal love story. Just know, it’s tough to read the hardships of these two but author takes you there with great delicacy in the hardships. Smoldered proves to be raw and hard, self-deprecating and dirty. But as in all great romances, sometimes out of our greatest weaknesses come our greatest strengths. Dark becomes light and lies become beautiful, gripping truths.

This incredible journey provides a true testament to the gift Rachel Blaufeld owns in telling an extraordinary story of two characters entangled in their present, tormented by their past, snaring them for their future. Rachel Blaufeld has a voice I’m excited about hearing more from with stories that aren’t all hearts flowers but instead real nuanced with darkness and depth. Smoldered gives the reader a hard journey worth taking, one you’re on the edge of your seat craving what’s next in this web of half-truths all the while hope simmering beneath words of despair. And as an end note, Blaufeld provides the most satisfying and joyful epilogue that suits both characters perfectly.

Let Rachel Blaufeld introduce you to the gripping world of The Electric Tunnel. Asher and Natalie will hold you captive.

Book Review: Electrified

Electrified (The Electric Tunnel #1)
by Rachel Blaufeld:
Everyone knows her as Sienna Flower.

Her curves and long lashes tease and taunt from her very own billboard where the desert meets the Las Vegas Strip. She’s the hottest stripper in town, known for her sultry and indecent moves coupled with her virginal eyes.

She’s a heady and unique combination, and a mystery to all who come to see her. Sienna captivates crowds nightly at the Electric Tunnel, leaving them wanting to know more about the sensual enigma. But no one ever sees beyond the heavily guarded stripper onstage. She is Sienna Flower 24/7.

No one other than her closest friend and boss, Asher Peterson, who helped turn a young and frightened girl into who Sienna is today. Together they created the sexual illusion known as Sienna Flower. They will go to any lengths to protect her image, which is why Sienna is convinced she must remain unattached and alone.

Like everyone else in Vegas, Sienna is hiding something and playing a role. A good girl in her former life, she was raised to be obedient and accepting of her fate, but there are some circumstances no one should be expected to accept. She escaped to a world light years away from the one she was subjected to…the Electric Tunnel.

Now she can never be anything other than Sienna Flower. Not only would she be hurt, but everyone around her would suffer the consequences.

That is, until she meets private detective Carson Graham, the dark and mysterious ex-FBI agent who watches her dance every weekend. With his dark hair and chocolate-brown eyes, Carson begins to heat Sienna’s heart and body, melting away the layers and secrets. Sienna doesn’t want to get attached to Carson, but when another man surfaces and starts hunting her down, bringing out the scars of her old life, she can’t help but seek comfort in Carson’s protection.

With everyone trading on the secrets of her past, Sienna finds herself caught in an awful web of lies. Her ultimate fear is hurting her friends at the Tunnel, but she doesn’t know who to trust. Namely, Carson. Is he good? Or bad? Does she have the luxury of finding out?
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Electrified generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

I hadn’t heard of this story, seen the cover, or read the blurb until the day I started reading it. Intrigued by the cover and blurb, I couldn’t wait to start Electrified. It’s one of those great erotic romances where the well-developed characters, both their pasts inexplicably entwined with their presents, grab hold you and keep glued to your kindle for the entire journey. As a debut author, Rachel Blaufeld exemplifies a great gift in connecting her characters to her readers. There wasn’t a moment in this book where a felt disconnected, where I wasn’t rooting for the main characters, disgusted at the villains, scheming with the secondary characters, or held captive by the creative plot.

As I was mystified by the characters and the story there were several spots of the story where the balance between past and present became inundated with justifications and rationalizations from both main characters on the choices they’ve made and the new choices they’re currently making. More than once I found descriptions of those justifications and of Sienna herself to be repetitive. The writing plot and characters wholly made up for those repetitive details.

Electrified holds the tale of Sienna Flower, good girl and honorable heroine disguised as an acclaimed Las Vegas stripper. Men and women alike come in droves for a glimpse at the illustrious Sienna all the while readers discover her life story as it slowly unfolds revealing a woman who’s overcome brutality to survive as the confident, beautiful woman she shows on stage. Carson Graham, an alpha hero to match an alpha hero, portrayed goodness and light to Sienna’s shadowed existence. Having overcome adversity himself, distancing himself from a solid foundation in his life he becomes somewhat unrecognizable to himself as his lust for Sienna grows. To the reader though, he becomes a great hero.

Independence, confidence, vulnerability all shine through these characters with rough emotional exteriors revealing light within them both making it impossible for the reader to deny their destined connection. The hero and heroine of Electrified fated to meet by an author with a voice I’m excited to hear more from electrified me from start to finish. This author takes a stereotype and blows it’s depictions out the water. She created a motley family of people who are kind, gentle, and loving in a world where most would recognize those types of families. It was beautiful to read. Another major highlight for me was the mysterious subplots working Asher Peterson, Sienna’s partner and best friend making it impossible for me not to pick up Smoldered and go back to the Electric Tunnel. Ms. Blaufeld's epilogue is another noteworthy pieces of the electric puzzle, filled with everything you want out of an epilogue of a story with characters you adore.

If you’re in the mood a romantic, erotic journey about acceptance and love, about a woman discovering the nuances of herself and a man destined to meet his match, filled with great main and secondary characters alike plus a unique, attention-grabbing plot check out Electrified.

Book Review: On the Floor

On the Floor (Second Story #1) by Jennifer LaCross: Who knew that working together and living on the same floor with the guy of her dreams would be so hard?

Well, everyone.

When Juilliard hopeful, Rachel Harris, loses her mother in her senior year of high school, everything changes. Taking care of her family becomes her top priority, her own happiness falling to the wayside.

The way she knows it has to be…

Jake Price has had family issues of his own, leaving him incapable of having anything more than a physical relationship.
When Rachel meets Jake on the dance floor, sparks fly, and fires burn, but he walks away with no more than a simple thank you.

The way he knows it has to be…

But fate can twist the best of intentions.

When Jake shows up the next day as Rachel’s new co-worker, they reluctantly decide to put aside their attraction for each other so they can work as friends.

Just friends … right?

Will Rachel and Jake be able to figure out how to work together, be together, and open up to each other?

Or will the past destroy everything they have built together?

This is the first book in the Second Story series.
Some of the material in On the Floor may be considered inappropriate for readers under 17.
Julie's thoughts: I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

I really liked this story, and honestly, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. The title and cover just didn't reach out to me for some reason. So, that's what I get for judging the book by its cover, I guess. Don't make the same mistake that I did. Give this a try.

This story takes place on a college campus. There is a good bit of drama, but the good kind, the kind gives you butterflies and has you staying up late at night instead of sleeping so you can be worth something at work the following day. There are times you want to reach through the book and smack characters. There are times you want to crawl in and give someone a hug. There are scenes that are smoking hot ** SPOILER ** the strip scene around 50%...holy smokes!, some that make you want to cry, and some that make you sigh. This book had it all. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.

Blitz & Giveaway: Magical Love

Is There a Formula for True Love?

When two people fall in love it’s magical…but sometimes the magic needs a little nudging… Or so biochemist, Jason Lucas, thought when he developed a formula to help love-challenged people like himself find true love. Ironically, in "Will He Be Mine," the millionaire scientist unwittingly begins a searing relationship with one of his test subjects and comes to question the feasibility of any love-enhancer formula.

Determined to stop all testing on his love enhancer, Jason elicits the help of his assistant, Lydia, to collect the last samples from nerdish test subject, Damone Reid. This quest propels the curvaceous, African-American woman into a wild adventure in "Man on The Run," fueled by a rejuvenated, romantic Damone, who sweeps her away and off her feet.

Unfortunately, Damone’s samples go astray, and end up in Penny Clark’s perfume. In "Animal Magnetism," Penny is thrilled to find she has unusual skills around wild animals. Intrigued by her abilities, rugged veterinarian, Garth Snowdon, soon falls under her spell. But after one night of explosive passion their love is put to the test when Garth discovers Penny’s heartbreaking secret.

"Magical Love" tells the stories of three couples whose lives change drastically after using the love enhancer formula. Yet despite the heated romances, the emotional intimacies, doubt creeps into the relationships—is it true love or is it the formula?

The door sported a sign that said "Danger. Do Not Enter" in big red lettersSmoothing her hair, straightening her clothes, determined to put her best foot forward, Penny grasped the door handle.  Pulling it open, she stepped decisively inside. And froze! She was in a bare concrete corridor with barred cage doors on one side.  All were closed except the one opposite Penny, which stood wide open.  Only feet away, a man was backed up against the wall.  Backed up for good reason. An enormous Siberian tiger, loose in the corridor, was fixed on him, lips pulled back in an ominous snarl.Without moving a muscle, the man hissed urgently at her out of the side of his mouth."Whoever you are, get out before the tiger sees you!"No part of Penny's body would move.  No part of her brain was able to give a command. Not when the great cat's head swiveled around and fixed Penny with its terrible yellow eyes.Slowly, it lifted its head, cocked it to one side, and then took a step in Penny's direction.  Penny found out what it meant to die a thousand deaths inside of an eye blink.  She actually felt her heart slow down, beating in huge, lolloping thuds as though struggling in heavy molasses.  The tiger took a second step toward her.  Then another, until it was near enough for her to feel the heat of its breath as it sniffed at her harshly.  Its fierce yellow gaze burned into her.  The striped head, up close, was massive."N-n-n-nice k-kitty," she heard herself croaking out idiotically.  "Why don’t you go back into your c-c-c-cage?"The huge cat’s lips quivered, again revealing a terrifying flash of fangs.   But the tiger’s tail, which had been lashing the whole time, suddenly slowed. The menace seemed to die quietly away.  With a final, assessing stare at Penny, the animal turned away and padded through the open cage door into the dimness inside.Instantly, the man sprang away from the wall and clanged the cage door shut.   Next, he clamped an arm around Penny’s waist and swept her out through the metal door into the sunshine and the normal world where loose tigers did not roam.It was a good thing the man’s arm was strong.  Once outside, Penny’s knees gave way.  She would have sunk to the ground had not the fellow held her upright. Instead, she collapsed against him.For an endless moment, they stood leaning together.  Penny could feel the man’s heart thumping like a steam hammer. When her own heart started to remember how to beat like it wasn’t going to explode any time soon, Penny came to herself enough to stand on her own and peel herself off the man’s chest.“I…oh goodness…I’m s-sorry s-so s-sorry—tiger big—s-sorry—”She was incoherent.  And felt as though the man’s shirt buttons were imprinted on her flesh.  “You should be,” the tall, broad-shouldered man suddenly roared in her ear.  “Don’t you know not to walk through a door that says, ‘Danger. Do Not Enter?’  What part of that don’t you understand?”Penny jumped and stared.  The face next her was volcanic.  Two pale blue eyes blazed out at her. Muscles stood out in ridges all along the man’s jaw.“You could have been killed!” he sputtered.  “Killed with one swipe of that cat’s claws.”“I thought you saw me on a camera and were asking me to come in,” Penny cried. That, at least, stopped the next hot burst.  The angry mouth opened and then shut again.  The jaw muscles smoothed down a bit.  The man ran rigid fingers through a wavy, dark windblown hair and struggled visibly to get a hold of himself.“The…the tiger didn’t hurt me.  It went back inside the cage.”Two male brows slid together thoughtfully.  A great deal of the volcanic heat in his face subsided.  The man began to look Penny over closely.“No,” he said with a tone of incredulity, “she didn’t.  That tiger was badly abused and came to us pregnant.  She’s usually ready to maul anything within reach.  But when you…well, I’ve never seen her calm down so quickly. Who are you anyway?"“Penny Clark.  Here about the job.  I came through the fence looking for Dr. Snowdon.”“That’s me.” The man seemed to shake himself. “Sorry about the yelling but you gave me one helluva scare.  With the animals we keep, we can’t afford a single security breach.”Yeah, right.  So just how had Dr.  Snowdon himself managed to get cornered in there with no means of escape in sight? As the man motioned for her to follow and set out toward the house, Penny knew this wasn’t the time to ask.  Inwardly she debated just making a dash for her car.  How badly did she need a job that involved near death by tiger?“Call me Garth,” the fellow said over his shoulder. As they approached the house, Garth’s hand slipped lightly to Penny’s waist to guide her into the rear garden.  Just as he was thinking the waist was nicely trim and supple, he got a full whiff of her perfume, Lucky Love. He had to stop himself from wheezing.Migawd, what is that perfume!  It could knock over a horse!Quickly, he stepped out of range, and seated Penny on a stone bench. This woman had recklessly walked straight through an off-limits door and almost into a tiger’s jaws.  He couldn’t afford anybody careless enough to make a possibly fatal mistake.

On the other hand, she hadn’t screamed or done anything stupid when Sabir approached her. Also, his chest still throbbed with the memory of her body collapsing against him.  She had made an impression on him.  A very strong impression.

Book Review & Giveaway: Science of Attraction

The Science of Attraction by Verity Jacobs: Kate Ramsey is at the top of her game.

She’s the hot new recruit at the most prestigious research institute in Germany, and she’s determined to live up to the hype — even if it means working day and night. Stress relief comes in the form of a no-nonsense affair with her neighbor, who also happens to be the director of the institute. Who says sex should be anything more than a contract between two people who have other things on their mind?

So when Tom Baker saunters into her life, Kate is understandably upset to see this well-oiled machine splutter and seize. Tom is young and smart, and far too pretty for his own good. Kate can’t help but be drawn to him, even if giving in to the attraction would mean risking everything she’s worked for.
Nikki's thoughts: A deliciously fun and sexy read, for sure! Who doesn't love a hot office romance? There is just the right amount of steamy stolen glances, "accidental" brushes, and subtle verbal foreplay in a sterile lab setting. I adored the romance game that Mrs. Jacobs was able to create and maintain between Kate and Tom. Uber sexy!! I found the story to be very interesting, without having an overload of confusing science-y stuff. Kate, Tom and Rob along with Tek, Margot and even Steffi provide a very well rounded cast of characters that make this story a true joy to read. I highly recommend it!

I found the story to be very interesting, without having an overload of confusing science-y stuff. Kate, Tom and Rob along with Tek, Margot and even Steffi provide a very well rounded cast of characters that make this story a true joy to read. I highly recommend it!
