Flashback Friday: Too Hot To Hula

My blog has been a little neglected recently. Partly because I am writing so much more – working on the sequel to About the Nature of the Creature as well as some other projects on and off – and partly because I’ve been busy with burlesque.

We’ve had no recent Flashback Friday posts as I have spent a couple of Friday’s out in that fabulous world of sequins, glitter and ALL THE HAIRSPRAY! I went along to watch Coochie Crunch presents Electric Ladyland and the Copper Feel Cabaretand thoroughly e...

Writing on the Bus

Originally posted on crea•ture/ˈkrēCHər/Noun - An animal, as distinct from a human being:

As part of my reflections on being morecreative, I have been thinking about writing on the bus, or anywhere else for that matter. I used to write prolifically on public transport – specifically on the train commute to my old job. Either in notebooks or eventually on my phone.

Not quite what I had in mind...

I could hammer out 600 words between Bristol and Bath in the morning. But that was when I had a blackb...

FlashBack Friday: The one song without Roy…

I recently used my Flashback Friday posts to tell you about my love for Pina Colada, and I’ve just posted up on my novel website all about writing to music. Here I combine the two to tell you about The Traveling Wilburys.

TravWilb1Cover

Wilburys are my favourite, nah, the ONLY super group out there worth a damn! Not only is it made up of some music legends (Jeff Lynne!!!)but also Roy Orbison who is, quite frankly, a god of music. Despite that, one of my favourite songs from their first album is the only one...

Writing to Music

Originally posted on crea•ture/ˈkrēCHər/Noun - An animal, as distinct from a human being:

Following on from my previous post about creative productivity, I’ve been looking at ways to recreate the time in my life where I wrote most prolifically.

By way of an accident I discovered something that had been a massive part of those days. My desk is in our living room so that even when I am lost in words the Hubster and I can be in the same room. The downside of this is that he can be a bit distracti...

Flashback Friday: About the Nature of the Creature

Originally posted on crea•ture/ˈkrēCHər/Noun - An animal, as distinct from a human being:

This month it has been three years since About the Nature of the Creature went to print.

I’ve written before with updates on the novel. On marketing fails, onvariousaspects of the story, the new cover, and few more tidbits in this interview. I suppose I could write more about Creature, but as it happens I am currently busy working on the sequel – with almost two chapters down so far.

So instead, I am going...

Recreating Productivity

Originally posted on crea•ture/ˈkrēCHər/Noun - An animal, as distinct from a human being:

I have recently been trying to recreate the environment of when I was writing most prolifically. This has been somewhat difficult because that time was when I was a student.

I did a four year undergraduate degree and a one year Masters, with a year out in between working a couple of part time jobs. This was the most productive writing period of my life to date.

The main reason was because the schedule of s...

Flashback Friday: Star Trek’s Vic Fontaine

Another in my ongoing thoughts on Star Trek…. This time about everyone’s favourite Hologram (or at least mine!)– Vic Fontaine

Holo-technology has been an important fixture in Star Trek since we first saw the holodeck come to life on our screens in The Next Generation. It’s existence allowed for the creation of Deep Space Nine’s holosuites and Voyager’s EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram), both of which became important in the development and direction of those shows.

Surely holodeck episodes were just an excuse for the costume department to go nuts!

Surely holodeck episodes were...

Are you a Superhero Wannabe?

This is a simple question to answer isn’t it?

The answer is unanimously yes of course. Even if you don’t particularly fancy using your powers for good or for the benefit of you fellow humans, you surely wouldn’t turn down a super power? At some point in our lives, as children certainly, but also as adults, we have thought about and discussed what it would be like to have a superpower and which we might prefer.

You could be greedy and decide on a power that gives you limitless other powers, or y...

The Writer’s Psychological Barrier…

L.E. Turner:

Latest post over on my novel website

If you google “Writer’s block” you will find quite a bit written on the subject – discussions on whether it really exists, definitions of what it is, and tips on how to overcome it.

Personally, I’ve never suffered from writer’s block – give me a pen, some paper and five minutes and I will write you a short story. What I find instead are barriers...

Flashback Friday: Yes I like Piña Colada

Released in 1979, “Escape” has been a song I have enjoyed for many years. I think I first grew to love it when I was in my first year at university and identified with many aspects of the song (a love ofpiña coladas and hatred of yoga).

I think the main reason I love the song, is because I like things that are stories, and this song is a story. One of the best romance stories in the history of romance.

The song is about a fella, bored of the dull routine relationship between him and his wife, r...
