FlashbackFriday: Planet of the Apes Go Go Girls!

A friend and fellow burlesque performer sent me this image some time back. It looks to be genuinely an off set photo whilst filming one of the original Planet of the Apes movies.

Planet of the Apes Go Go Girls!

I love it! I love everything about it!!

I’m a huge fan of the original movies and the novel. So much so that I had a burlesque routine based on it, which is why my friend sent me this image.

I’ve not been able to find out much about it, so if anyone has any ideas about the origins of this...

Our Obsession with the End of the World

With the plethora of books, comics, TV shows, movies and games set in the apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic genre it is easy to believe that modern society has an obsession with the end of the world. But it isn’t just a modern invention or obsession. Take a look at the writers of early sci-fi and dystopian genres and you can see that our obsession and possibly even belief that the world will come to a (fireball/frozen/zombie-ridden/cannibalistic/chimpanzee) end is nothing new at all. With this in m...

Almost Review: The Winter Soldier

Thursday night the Hubster and I went for an impromptu cinema trip and watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This isn’t a review because I didn’t have my notebook with me and so did not watch with the eye of a reviewer. So although I am unable to post a review, I still wanted to note some observations.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Assemble

Although I enjoyed the first Captain America movie, I do find the Cap as a character to be quite basic and boring. The first movie was carried p...

FlashbackFriday: M&S Nov 2010 window display

WordPress openID never works, so when I recently commented on a friend’s Blogger post it took me back to my own blogger that was in use for the length of 2010. One thing that jumped out at me was this image -

M&S, Bath - window display Nov 2010

M&S, Bath – window display Nov 2010

So this is the window display I encountered at Mark & Spencer in Bath, UK. I worked in Bath at the time and passed this a couple of times a day, and each time it kinda creeped me out. I can only presume (from the fact that they ladykins crotches are roug...

Women of the Walking Dead

It is unusual for me to watch the movie or television show of a book adaptation before reading the book. One recent exception to this was the Walking Dead. A strange choice considering my documented zombie fear, however I greatly enjoy the show. On top of this a couple of friends recommended the comics, so I decided to give them a go.

This sort of thing is why I was looking forward to getting my teeth into the comic

I picked up the first five trade-paperbacks and jumped in. I was immediately gl...

Personal: Burlesque – Why I’m taking my curtain call

I started performing burlesque early in 2010, having been a fan for many years including whilst it was still quite an underground art. In that time the scene has changed immeasurably, something oft discussed on social media and forums.

One of my first public performances

Some may feel that this is just what every one says when the next generations start coming up through (“in my day…”), but from my point of view there are a lot of truths here. The mainstream popularity of burlesque and the clos...

Marvel(ous?)

I never really got into Marvel comics, there always just seemed so many titles and no easy entry point, so I just never bothered. I found see them on the shelves, maybe picked them up now and then, but never ended up finding any I was enthused enough about to buy.

Today I bought my first Marvel haul. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, I went for Captiain Marvel and Ms Marvel.

FlashbackFriday: Picture from the archives!

Bit of an odd one this, but I came across it one of my old facebook albums the other day whilst looking through some old photos.

Coneheads at the Museum

Coneheads at the Museum

I originally came across this image in 2010 whilst archiving photographs, in my old job at a museum. It appears to be a visit from the Coneheads to the Museum, date unknown but I have in my notes that it was possibly sometime in the late 90s (the photo itself is still with the Museum so I have no idea where I got that date from) – presumably fr...

Personal: Spring Blues

It is the first day of Spring! As Google gleefully reminds us today, with its google-doodle. But I feel less enthusiastic than the multinational corporation.

Spring…

For many years now I have struggled with the start of Spring, as many often struggle with the onset of Winter. It has less to do with the weather and more to do with the associations I have with that weather. In my early twenties I lived in Australia, I even did part of my undergrad degree there on a scholarship. It was an interest...
