Season Review: Marvel’s Agents of Shield Season 1

I originally watched the first three of four episodes of Agents of SHIELD when it aired on television, and I just couldn’t get into it. But once I’d watched Captain America: Winter Soldier I had a growing desire to watch the show to experience the larger cinematic universe of Marvel. As a result Hubster and I recently binge watched season 1, here’s what I thought of it.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Flashback Friday – Review: The Killing Joke

The Killing Joke – One Shot, March 1988

DC Comics

Author: Alan Moore

Illustrator: Brian Bolland

Even before the DC/Marvel divide occurred in our house (FYI there is no longer a divide, we are bothentirelyMarvel converts now), there was another divide. I grew up with Superman, from the comics to the Christopher Reeve movies and although I enjoyed some stuff (Batman Returns is my favourite Christmas movie!) I was never a huge Batman fan. Nothing has significantly changed on that front over the year...

Writing Challenges

Originally posted on crea•ture/ˈkrēCHər/Noun - An animal, as distinct from a human being:

With NaNoWriMo coming up next month, it feels like a good time to think about writing challenges. That said, it isn’t the imminent arrival of NaNoWriMo that put me in mind of this, but one of my fellow writers who read at the latest Small Stories event in Bristol (you can read about my experience at their first event here).

This particular lady, Clare Crestani, had set herself the challenge of writing a 25...

Top Five Favourites: Batman Returns

I recently rewatched the Burton/Schumacher Batman movies, and really wanted to write something about Batman Returns. It remains not only my favourite Batman movie to date, but also one of my favourite Christmas movies. That said, I didn’t want to review it in depth, but I couldn’t pass it over without considering some of the excellent things about it. As such, I’ve settled on a run down of my top five favourite things about Batman Returns. Enjoy!

Personal: Prom Dress (or not)

Those of you who follow me on twitter may have noticed that I hadbeen in the process of creating some kind of outfit for prom. That is to say, the Prom Night themed night of the Bristol Burlesque Festival 2014 last Saturday. And let me just tell you my outfit selection/creationdidnot go smoothly. Unlike the event itself which was amazing – the final night of a three show festival, complete with balloons, streamer curtains and to top it off a goth won Prom Queen – yup, my kind of prom!

Epic!

Flashback Friday: Heroes and Villains Pub Crawl

It was either the first or second year at uni (1999/2000) that my friends and I went along on the Heroes and Villains Pub Crawl. It was for the medics, of which three of our friends were, and so we all decided to go as one themed group.

The theme we chose was the villains of Batman.

Let me explain though, that this wasn’t a case of assigning costumes and getting on with it – we did thorough research. We all set aside a weekend, went along to the local video store and rented the Burton/Schumache...

Almost Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Let me start by saying I initially had no interest whatsoever in watching this movie. I had grown up with the cartoon and remember vaguely enjoying it, and I think I may have watched one or both of the old movies, but I never really felt a burning urge to see the Turtles return. Secondly, though possibly more importantly, I really hate Michael Bay who is on as Producer for this movie. Every time I watch one of his films I get sick and want to scream at the screen “just stop spinning the gorra...

Throwback Thursday! Bristol Burlesque Festival

With burlesque so on my mind recently, and the Festival coming up, this week, instead of a usual #flashbackfriday post I decided to throw you back to this time last year and the first ever Bristol Burlesque Festival!

2014’s Festival starts tonight and is set to be as awesome, vibrant and damn right weird as last years. Tonight’s show is sold out, but if you’re quick you may be able to grab tickets for Friday and Saturday‘s shows, or one of the amazing workshops running all day Saturday!

Do you read your Twitter Messages?

Originally posted on crea•ture/ˈkrēCHər/Noun - An animal, as distinct from a human being:

As I’m sure many of my fellow writers can sympathise, I receive a lot of messages via my twitter account and I’m sure I’m not alone in not always knowing what to do with them.

To be honest, I’m terrible at replying to messages, be they on twitter, facebook or even SMS. Many I will read and then just forget to go back to, but with twitter I’ve pretty much stopped reading them as they come in. The very fact...
