Book Review: Meatspace by Nikesh Shukla

Meatspace
Author Nikesh Shukla
Published July 2014

I obtained my copy of Meatspace by bartering with author Nikesh Shukla at a writers event that we were both reading at. At the event he read the first few pages of the book, which instantly had me hooked, and also told some funny stories about his fails and wins on the internet. His win being the promo video he made for the novel, which featured a lamb chop being sent into space (because meat. space.), going viral overnight.

Given that I ha...

Review: Oakfield by David J Rodger

Oakfield
Author David J Rodger
Published March 2015

I’ve been making an effort in recent months to read and review books by other Indie and self-pub Authors. From the start of 2015 I’ve decided to review any that I give 3 stars or over on my blog.

As per my previous post on the subject, I am also very interested in swapping honest reviews with other authors, so please get in touch if youd like to swap reviews.

Top Five Favourites: Age of Ultron (2015)

I watched Age of Ultron last night and despite having a few misgivings I was not disappointed. I was too busy enjoying it to make any notes to write any kind of review, but there were just a few things that really stood out to me that I wanted to share.

Needless to say, there areSOMESPOILERS AHEAD for both the movie and the source material.

I was curious as to how Age of Ultron would be handled with the current line-up as it was clearly missing, and would feel odd to introduce, some characte...

Live Tweet Review: The Warriors (1979)

The Warriors is a movie that I’m sure I must have watched one late night as a teenager but never really thought about. Moreso I am aware of the many pop culture parodies that have come over the years in shows such as American Dad and Community. An impromptu movie night last night with the Hubster and an even more impromptu live tweeting of the movie has led to this post.

Top Five Favourites: DareDevil (2003)

With the new Netflix original DareDevil series now live (I’m already 5 episodes in) I rewatched DareDevil (2003) recently and is another movie that I didn’t want to completely review, but I did want to point out some of my favourite parts, because yes I have some.

My personal opinion is that DareDevil is often wrongly maligned. There were aspects of it which made the whole weaker – arguably it would have been stronger without Bullseye and Electra or if the love story had been a bit less promi...

Review: Bitch Planet Issue 1

Bitch Planet Issue 1, December 2014 Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, illustrated by Valentino De Landro It was inevitable that I would pick up a copy of Bitch Planet. I am a huge fan of Kelly Sue DeConnick (remember that one time she replied to one of my tweets?!), and knew it was on the horizon. Even so, life threw me a curve ball and I was out of action for a bit, so as the first three issues came in, they sat languishing on my desk. In that time I have seen the growing number of readers tw...

Short Story: Eclipse

Inspired by the partial solar eclipse lastFriday. The End or the Beginning?

The End or the Beginning?

Part: -100,000 There were cries aloud from both the children and those grown alike. A collective howl went up towards the darkening sky as the sun threatened to wink out. Slowly it began to hide behind the black ball that crept in front of it. Those who were observant had noticed the process, which seemed like magic, as soon as it had begun. But now as the light faded and faded and faces turned skywards to see th...

Review: The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly

The Great Zoo of China
Author Matthew Reilly
Published February 2015 (hardback)

As someone who has worked in publicity and marketing in the past, I find myself immune to most marketing campaigns and marvel at how people can really fall for television adverts. So it speaks highly of Matthew Reilly’s The Great Zoo of China that all it took was seeing a few online adverts for it that made me check out the author, who I’ve never read before, and buy the book in hardback – something I almost neve...

Flashback Friday: Top Five Favourites Jurassic Park (Movie)

I’ve been playing a lot of Zoo Tycoon lately and am about to start on the Dinosaur Dig extension pack for the first time ever –all because, for some reason, Jurassic Park has been looming large in my mind of late. I watched the trailer for the upcoming Jurassic World and was intrigued enough to re-watch Jurassic Park, easily one of my favourite movies. I’ve watched it in the cinema twice – once on first release with my family where my mum caused someone sitting behind us to throw his popcor...
