FlashbackFriday: Who were the Celts?

I thought for this week’s flashback I would put up this micro-essay I wrote in 2002 on the concept the “Celtic Myth” – an ongoing debate on the existence of a people known as the Celts.

*

Reference to the “Celts” first appears in Iron Age Greek texts. It was during the Iron Age that the Celts (also called Gauls and Galatians) seem to become feared “barbarians” – essentially peoples who live beyond Greek and Roman urbanareas. This term appears tohave been used by the Greeks and Romans to describ...

Almost Review: Amazing Spider-Man 2

As with when I (sort of) reviewed Captain America: Winter Soldier this is not quite a review either as it was the result of an impromptu cinema trip where I didn’t have my notebook with me and did not watch with the eye of a reviewer. So although I am unable to post a review, I still wanted to note some observations.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! #

Flashback Friday: Short Story – Walking

This is a short story I wrote around 2003 after walking in the freezing cold from a rather disappointing job interview.

caves02

I didn’t know where I was anymore, I couldn’t see. So I walked on. On, on, down the valley and then up into the mountains. The sharp wind slashed at my face making it numb, though not numb enough to block the pain it caused. The liquid that had built up in my nose was now running over my lips, barely realised through my unfeeling skin. I was starting to forget things: I coul...

About the Nature of the Dreams

Reblogged from my novel website.

Dreams are important in Connie’s life. For one thing it is whilst she is dreaming that Connie is closest to being human. In her dreams she experiences pain, fear, anxiety and a range of other human emotions thatshe is unable to feel as keenly whilst awake. Her dreams are also a window into her own past as she discovers she is dreaming of events in her childhood...

FlashbackFriday: 1996 Easter in Greece

I thought I would go for an Easter themed post for this week. The photos below I took whilst travelling around Greece in 1996 with my college archaeology class. We were on the road on this particular day when we got held up by a parade and festival. Instead of waiting in our bus we decided to get out and join the festivities, and what an amazing experience that was!

In this small rural Greek town, which I unfortunately do not know the name of, we discovered that Christian and Pagan traditions...

You Survived the Apocalypse – What Now?

Following on from my recent post about human obsession with the end of the world, I thought I would delve a bit deeper into the Apocalyptic theme. There’s a lot out there, both online and in printed media that instruct on how to survive different varieties of apocalypse (Max Brooks’ the Zombie Survival Guideis just the tip of the decomposing iceberg).

I’m going to skip over all of those because living through it isn’t your biggest problem (chances are you will die horribly, so what’s the point...

Why I tip my Tattoo Artist

There is a lot written online about how much to tip a tattoo artist, mostly from a US perspective where tipping is a completely different part of their culture than here in the UK. That is not to say that we in the UK do not tip, in fact nothing can be farther from the truth, but that it is not institutionalised in the same way.

In the US, tipping in the service industry for the most part adheres to an established standard of 10 or 20%. In the UK we are a lot more loose with this – in general...

FlashbackFriday: Our love/hate of Dawn Summers

When Dawn Summers appeared on our screens during the closing moments of the Season five opening episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she elicited mixed emotions, and that seems to be true to this day. And I’m starting to think, maybe we should give her another shot, because really, wasshe all that bad?Den of Geek certainly thinks so, naming her one of the most disappointing female characters in sci-fi.From my point of view, no she’s not that bad (I’ll come to that). But she has certainly been...
