Lollipop Day. Linguists believe the term ‘lolly pop’ (which literally means ‘tongue slap’) came from Northern England since the word there for ‘tongue’ is ‘lolly’ and ‘pop’ means ‘slap.’ So give your candy a good tongue-slapping today!

Pandemonium Day when anything can happen and nothing can be predicted. So let your hair down, go crazy, have ice-cream for breakfast, wear your undies on the outside and expect the unexpected.  Today is a fun day for most of us, a stressful day for our OCD friends and a professional challenge for those with psychic abilities.

Embrace your geekness day. Whether you’re a science, math or technology enthusiast, today is the day to be proud of your math jokes and pocket calculator. If you’re yet to get in touch with your inner geek, try reading Unnatural Selection: why the geeks will inherit the earth by Mark Roeder, or Never Been Kissed by C.M. Kars, Gaming for Keeps by Seleste DeLaney, Claiming her Geeks by Eve Langlais, At Any Price by Brenna Aubrey.

(A big thank you to those who told the ninjas about their favourite geek romance reads.)

Cow Appreciation Day. Did you know that when the U.S. Department of agriculture mapped the bovine genome they found that cattle have about 22,000 genes and a whopping 80% of those are shared with humans? Perhaps that’s one reason a cow’s gestation lasts the same amount of time as human pregnancy, nine months. Cow-lovers, the romance world has you covered. Harlequin has a seven-book Colorado Cattle Barons series here. Or you could dive into Lori Wilde’s Jubilee, Texas, Series Boxed Set which is all cowboys, all the time, and where there be cowboys there be cows. Amen.

‘Don’t step on a Bee Day’. It’s sage advice. I once stepped on two bees at once and my foot swelled up to three times its size. I walked around with my itching, burning, irritating as hell flipper-foot for two days until the antihistamines kicked in. Of course, this day is for humans. Bees have their own safety day, ‘Don’t fly into a Windscreen Day’.

Bee reads: The Bees by Laline Paull (it’s not romance but it is fascinating).

Chocolate Day. Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa once wrote, “There is no metaphysics on earth like chocolate.” Please allow me to translate. What he really meant was “there’s nothing on earth as frigging awesome as chocolate”.

Chocolatey reads: Chocolat by Joanne Harris, The Chocolate Lovers Club by Carole Matthews, The Discovery of Chocolate by James Runcie, Chocolate Wishes by Trisha Ashley, Chocolate Secrets by Zelda Benjamin, and (my favourite) Chocolate-Dipped Death by Sammi Carter

International Kissing Day. Want to be an expert on kissing? Here’s some facts to get you started:

The science of kissing is called philematology.

The technical word for a French kiss is ‘cataglottism’

The term “kiss my ass” dates back at least to 1705.

Victorian guidebooks advised women to put pins in their mouths to avoid being kissed in the dark when trains went through tunnels.

Do you have a favourite fictional kiss? Tell us about it and then pucker up!

forgetful.jpg

‘I Forgot Day’, which is when you have the opportunity to make your apologies for anything you have forgotten, such as birthdays, anniversaries, turning up to work, cooking dinner for your family... The only problem is that on this day you are meant to remember what it is that you forgot, which leads to a whole other paradigm shift of ‘what if I’ve forgotten what I was meant to remember that I originally forgot?’ More importantly, what if the person you are apologising to for forgetting something has actually forgotten that you forgot? Does the apology still count, or should you just forget it?

Amnesia plots in romance: Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella, Someone to Watch Over Me by Lisa Kleypas, Enticed by His Forgotten Lover by Maya Banks, Slightly Sinful by Mary Balogh.
