Interview with Marielle Sijgers – co-founder of S2M

Today is women’s day, and we came a long, long way from the February 28th, 1909, when the American women celebrated women’s day for the first time. Back then we had just got our rights to vote, and since the 40s the percentage of women working went from 20 to 80 percent. Now we see the increase of women in leadership roles and opening their own businesses. The world is within our reach, we just have to go and grab it. This is the case of Marielle Sijgers, the co-founder of Seats2meet, and that’s why I interviewed her today.
Hi Marielle, first of all, happy women’s day! As a successful entrepreneur yourself, what is your advice for other women who want to do the same?
Don’t make yourself apart from men. Just be sure you have the needed talents in the market for now, and the future. Most of them come even more naturally for most women, like the ability to be open, collaborative & willing to share with other parties.
What made you want to be an entrepreneur?
I can positively state that entrepreneurship is something I grew up with. I was raised in Almelo (a city in the east of the Netherlands) with my brother and sister (who are respectively four and five years older than me) by two very entrepreneurial parents in a real middle-class family.
We lived in the center of Almelo (obviously above one of our stores). My parents were always searching for innovation and continuously monitoring the dynamics of the city. Their motto was: when you don’t act, nothing will change. In business, my parents were always looking for the right shop formula which satisfied the needs of the people in Almelo at that time.
We as children were involved in ‘running the business’ at an early age. Every Thursday evening and Saturday, we would have our own popcorn stand in front of my parents’ store. That’s how I learned to count money at the end of each day. Back then, I was thrilled with a daily revenue of 46 guilders

Interview with Anne Theelen – Volunteering with NL Voorelkaar

Bitcoin explained the easy way

Description:
BBC News explains in less than three minutes what the difference is between our current payment system and a system that works with cryptocurrencies.
What is it?
In our current payment system, it’s the bank who gives a final okay for a financial transaction. If you don’t have enough money in your bank account, the bank can stop you buying stuff. For that check, the bank gets paid. If you put your money in cryptocurrencies like the bitcoin the value is recorded on the blockchain, in other words, lots of computers worldwide. If you buy something the record will change on all those computers, which makes cheating impossible. And, better still, it makes it cheaper because no money has to be paid for checking if you’re financially solid.
Why is it interesting?
You hear a lot about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but how do they actually work? What happens? And why are the better or safer than the payment system we use at the moment? With this short video from the BBC, you will understand paying with cryptocurrencies. It is the power of the crowd, in fact, lots of computers, which takes care of safety without the usual costs.
Key take away
“I wouldn’t trust any single person, but I might trust everyone”

Infographic: What Your Office Desk Says About You

Everyone’s desks are different, and they can reveal quite a bit about a person’s personality.
The following infographic explores this very topic and reveals what your office workspace might say about you as a person and as a worker. It may not be scientifically accurate but pretty close. Personally, I would consider myself a minimalist – what about you?

What does the Global Data Protection Regulation changes?

On May 15th of this year the GDPR – standing for global data protection regulation – will get into rigor in European Union countries. The regulations take place of another established in 1995. They explain on their website that as the world becomes more data-drive the need to update those regulations grew. So here is a summary of their main changes and what Seats2meet is doing about it.
Covering more territories
As the old regulation didn’t make it clear to whom the law applied, specifically to where the entities were, this one is clear; any company making use of data of European citizens, or companies placed in Europe are affected by the regulations. It doesn’t matter if the processing of data is being made somewhere else. Even if a company is not present in Europe, but collects EU citizens data, have to appoint a representative in EU.
Penalties
The Eu is taking data protection quite seriously, and this reflects in the penalties for not obeying the regulations. The highest one can get up to 20 million euros, or 4% of annual global turnover. This penalty goes to companies that are not asking their customers consent to process their data, or that infringes the core of Privacy by Design concepts. There are several different penalties for violating each part of the regulations.
Consent
The conditions for consent changed and that’s one of the main parts of the regulations. In order for a user to give consent the privacy and data forms must be easy and simple for anyone to understand it. That means no more legal terms.
Changes at the Seats2meet website
We kept our eyes on the regulations since 2016, when EU announced them. Since then we have been studying the laws and what is it in our website that we need to change. So here are the modifications:
You can visualize all the data we use. Before, you could see and modify most of the data we use. There is the only thing that you couldn’t visualize, and that is who you are being matched to. Although you can see who are your matches, you couldn’t know who was see you as a match. That is different now, and you can visualize who is seeing you as a match on your profile page at Seats2meet.com.
We added an opt-in to our privacy policies and terms before you can create your login. They were already quite a simple and quick read, so we didn’t have to change much in there. I recommend you to read it as well, as it is the same size as this blog. You can find it at seats2meet.com/privacy.
We also changed the way you can subscribe to our newsletter from opt-out to opt-in. By the way, if you would like to receive the S2M stories weekly – like the one you are reading now – you can subscribe here.
You can read more about the GDPR at eugdpr.org
