Even opladen? Neem een natuurmomentje!

Wat maakt nou dat mensen zich prettig voelen in een ruimte? Want als je je prettig voelt, dan functioneer je beter. Hebben we allemaal wel eens aan den lijve ervaren toch? Met deze schijnbaar eenvoudige vraag, houd ik mij al enkele jaren bezig.

Biofilie: onze aangeboren liefde voor de natuur

In mijn zoektocht naar omgevingsfactoren die maken dat je je in een ruimte niet alleen prettig voelt maar ook beter kunt werken, kwam ik het begrip ‘biofilie’ tegen. Dat betekent zoveel als ‘aangeboren liefde voor de natuur’. Hoe dieper ik in de materie duik, hoe voor de hand liggender het eigenlijk wordt: wij hebben de natuur nodig om ons goed te voelen.

Nu zie ik menig wenkbrauw rijzen: ‘De natuur? Die bewaar ik voor vakanties; doe mij maar de reuring van de stad’. Is ook heerlijk. Heb zelf jaren midden in Amsterdam gewoond en ik genoot van de gezelligheid en de inspiratie om me heen. Wel voelde ik dat mijn hoofd steeds vol- en soms ook overliep. Groot gegroeid op het platteland verlangde ik soms zo intens naar die weidse vertes, naar dat groene ‘niets’. Zo kwam het dat ik mijzelf één weekend per maand uitliet en alle uithoeken van Nederland verkende via de Lange Afstands- Wandelingen (LAW’s). ’S maandags kroop ik dan weer helemaal opgefrist achter mijn bureau.

Eigen interieurconcept

Jarenlang bracht ik als werknemer in uiteenlopende kantoorruimtes (en organisaties) door, totdat ik voor mezelf begon. Verrijkt door die ervaringen, met als fundament de gedragswetenschap en als toetje een vakopleiding interieurontwerp, heb ik mijn eigen interieurconcept ontwikkeld. Er inmiddels van overtuigd dat ruimtes positief bij kunnen dragen aan de vermogens van mensen. En dat mensen daarin van elkaar verschillen, met als uitersten de prikkelzoekers en de prikkelmijders. Logisch zul je zeggen, toch pakt dat in de praktijk vaak anders uit. Ga maar na bij jezelf. Je ervaart vast dat sommige plekken werken en andere gewoon niet. Zo hebt je bij S2M vast je favoriete plek.

Via via kwam ik met S2M in contact. Zij zochten iemand om Zaal 18 opnieuw in te richten en ik zocht een omgeving waar ik het principe van ‘Buiten naar binnen halen’ in een (samen)werkomgeving, feitelijk toe kon passen. In het eerste verkennende gesprek met Nynke Visser bleek al snel dat we beiden een fijne werkomgeving voor mensen voor ogen hadden. De kernwaarden Connect, Collaborate en Grow van S2M kon ik naadloos – en wat ‘Grow’ betreft zelfs letterlijk- vertalen in interieurvisie en beleving.

Leeg gewerkt? Een natuurmomentje laadt direct op!

Terug nu naar de biofilie, want die liefde voor de natuur hebben we in aanleg allemaal gemeen. Gewoon omdat wij deel uitmaken van de natuur. Al verdringen we dat soms, of ontwikkelen we zelfs een biofobie. Ons brein is echter zo geprogrammeerd dat verbinding met de natuur wezenlijk bijdraagt aan onze geestelijke en lichamelijke gezondheid. Een omgeving die voortdurend een appèl op je doet, gecombineerd met een tekort aan natuurmomentjes om even op te laden, leidt vroeg of laat tot stressklachten. Als dat lang aanhoudt, zelfs tot chronische stress met alle bijbehorende ziekten en klachten als burn out, depressies en hartklachten van dien.

Onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat alleen al het zien van natuur (Ulrich), of een korte wandeling in de natuur (Kaplan), herstel van je vermogens laat zien. Dat is echt super boeiende materie waar ik een boek over vol zou kunnen schrijven. Dat heb ik (nog) niet gedaan. Voor mijn balans moet ik achter die laptop vandaan en als ontwerper die natuur naar binnen halen. Zoals ik bij S2M Utrecht heb gedaan. Met echte planten in de lounge en in de verbeelding van Amelisweerd in zaal ‘ecosystem’.

Signal instigates co-creation calling their community in an unexpected way

Opening a new co-working venture was an exciting but somewhat overwhelming challenge; deciding how to lay it out, what to include and pinpointing exactly what people would want. However, the one thing which was easy to decide on was how we were going to bring the local community together in the first place: chair painting.  

What better way to meet new people than to embrace the ever-increasing trend of up-cycling? We partnered with two local companies to offer their professional expertise and advice to all the painters; bought some old wooden chairs, some Annie Sloan paint, and that was it. The most important thing to us is championing local businesses, encouraging more people into our area and working in-line with the Council re-development scheme to boost our local community. We especially like to support those in the craft and therapy sectors; so we designed some of our meeting rooms to specifically cater for those individuals, with wipe clean floors, sinks and space to put up a massage table in a relaxing and aptly decorated environment. We decided that we would start as we mean to go on, by encouraging people to come and meet others they may never have encountered before, try something new and maybe learn a thing or two.

Chairs were decorated in our signature color scheme, but each one was different, reflecting the style, values, and personality of the individual’s business. We had a variety of creative ideas, from an Osteopath painting an image of the correct way to sit in a chair, to detailed patterns and designs, showing us and the people who made them just how innovative they can be. It enabled us to get to know people before our official opening and from that day collaborations were made, which proved to us that chatting in an informal and relaxed environment, was indeed the best way to grow a small business.  

The chairs were not just left by the way-side or indeed, just left to be sat on, we wanted to make a feature out of them. We wanted people to return to Signal and feel proud of ‘their chair,’ start a talking point about why their design was the way it was and allow relationships to build. So, each chair has an engraved plaque, with the artists’ name and URL of their business, ensuring the networking and collaborative nature of our co-working space is always in action. Each maker’s picture was also taken with their chair, explaining a little about the painter with their business details on; these have now been displayed in our own mini art gallery.

Making it easier for small businesses to develop, connect and grow in an informal environment is a philosophy which we intend to rely upon throughout the development of the UK’s first Seats2Meet partner.

Become a Blockchain Guru at Meet Berlage’s New Blockchain Lab

Into blockchain? Know nothing about blockchain, but want to learn more — and how it could benefit your business? Come to Meet Berlage’s new “Blockchain lab,” now in the Lotenzaal every Tuesday.

The lab, called #blockDAM and initiated by Blockchain Workspace, offers the possibility to interact, network and collaborate with other blockchain experts, enthusiasts and newbies. You’ll learn what Blockchain Technology actually is and how it works, as well as how to start building it yourself.

What is blockchain?

While the word is being thrown around more and more, very few fully understand what it actually is. In a nutshell, blockchain (also called trustware) is a groundbreaking new application that enables more efficient processes and secure interactions through cryptography. The technology will become more and more important as time goes on.

The organizer, Henk van Cann, is recognized as a blockchain expert in the Dutch blockchain community. When his team was on the hunt for a great location in Amsterdam to hold the lab, the Meet Berlage stood out as the ideal environment.

“The idea is to have a decentralized organization that has a fixed day of the week to co-work on blockchain knowledge sharing, spreading the word, and meetups in a specific location, and we are very happy Meet Berlage partnered on this for the Tuesdays in Amsterdam,” he said.

Why is blockchain important?

“It is a life-changing event if you get it. If you don’t, no worries: it’ll hit  you like a friendly tsunami in 5 or 10 years time, because the technology is all-encompassing and will be present everywhere under the hood of every days tools and applications.”

“The inspiration we get from visitors is due to their sudden awareness that ‘our’ technology is going to change society as we know it,” he added. “The shiny eyes, the expressions of joy, once they ‘get it’.”

In fact, learning about cryptocurrency has caused many past members to change their work drastically: “The impact we strive for is that anyone, in his / hers own pace, can grasp the fundamental features of this new technology and do with that whatever he or she likes.”

In addition to the weekly lab, Henk’s team is also starting a monthly meetup at the Meet Berlage, which will begin in May.

What can people expect when they come? “Start in the listening mode. Work next to us and keep your ears and eyes open. Note what you don’t know, and Google will teach you. Then in the next stage: Tell us what you do, what you need. Maybe blockchain is the right answer, mostly not. You will learn through presentation during the co-working day, and while attending the monthly meetups.”

ZomerOndernemer Utrecht, Stichtse Vecht & Nieuwegein

Inloopspreekuur voor jongeren met ondernemersambitie.

Heb jij ondernemerschap in je DNA? Een fantastisch idee, en zin om daar in de zomer écht mee aan de slag te gaan? Kom langs als je meer informatie wilt over deze zomerbootkamp: aan de slag met je eigen bedrijf! Oud-deelnemers en trainers zijn aanwezig om uitleg te geven over het project ZomerOndernemer.

Programma ZomerOndernemer start op 17 juli 2018 met een actieve driedaagse training, waarbij je naast creatief denken, leert netwerken en uitgedaagd wordt om uit je comfort zone te stappen. Ook wordt je idee aangescherpt, zodat je (met ca 150 euro startkapitaal) na de driedaagse stappen kunt zetten met je bedrijf. In de periode na de driedaagse vindt wekelijks een bijeenkomst plaats waarbij je gekoppeld wordt aan ondernemers uit de regio. Het project sluit af met een feestelijke bijeenkomst waarbij alle ideeën gepitcht worden.

Voorwaarden regio Utrecht, Stichtse Vecht en Nieuwegein

De voorwaarden voor deelname zijn simpel; alle jongeren van 15-22 uit de gemeentes Utrecht, Stichtse Vecht en Nieuwegein kunnen deelnemen, waarbij de enige vereisten motivatie en een goed idee zijn. Deelname is dus gratis. Wel moet je in de zomer tijd willen stoppen in het project, je gaat aan de slag met je eigen bedrijf.

Ervaar het ondernemerschap door het opzetten van je eigen bedrijf en maak je kennis met een netwerk van lokale ondernemers én leeftijdsgenoten met gelijke interesse en ambitie.

Een goed idee en veel enthousiasme kunnen het begin zijn van een succesvolle onderneming.

Meet Stephan Verveen, our Data Protection Officer

Hi! My name is Stephan Verveen and as of April this year I support Seats2Meet International in the role of Data Protection Officer (Dutch: Functionaris voor de Gegevensbescherming).

Background

Since 1998 I have worked in corporate, startup and scientific environments on the development of net-centric (collaborative) systems. I have a passion for the boundary spanning complexity and the societal impact of the internet. Within that, I especially enjoy the zone where emotion, imagination, storytelling and aesthetics overlap with the rational realities of code, data, systems and policies. I strongly believe that systems exist to support humans, not vice-versa.

Relevant formative experiences in my work comprise:

participation in three early stage startups in online collaboration, e-commerce/travel and education sectors.
four and a half years of hands-on Java/J2EE development employed by big five consulting firm, eventually as outsourcing & delivery-lead for the booking-tool of a large airline.
crowdsourcing and self-organisation experiments in policy development with the Dutch ministry of economic affairs.
