A philosopher for Gen X: Review of Corey Taylor’s Seven Deadly Sins
For a long time, I’ve been meaning to read Corey Taylor’s books. After all, I love his wordsmithery in terms of song lyrics, so I suspected I’d enjoy his prose. I started with Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good. Yes, I finally read this book!
One thing I noticed by perusing previous reviews was that a lot of readers have taken issue with the fact that most Christian folks don’t really pay attention to the seven deadly sins anymore—and I’ll grant them that—but that wasn’t really the point of Taylor’s book. Instead, it was just kind of a jumping off point for him to share his philosophies about what we regard as sin, whether or not we call it “deadly” or think we’re going to hell or whatever.
Whether you’re looking at the seven deadly sins or just sin in general, Taylor posits at the very beginning that what we regard as sins may better be viewed as learning experiences. And I don’t disagree. Basically, when all is said and done, he makes the argument in Chapter 1 that “sin is a matter of opinion and in my opinion sins are only sins if you are hurting other people.”
Now those of you who have followed me for a while know that I am a huge Corey Taylor fan (even when I take issue with…something). I think he’s one of the finest lyricists of our age. In fact, one of the finest writers in general–which is why I’m calling him a philosopher for my generation. You might remember back when Slipknot was first starting out that some critics said he couldn’t write without using curse words. He quickly turned around and proved that that wasn’t true with Slipknot’s third album. But that just tells me they weren’t listening to his actual words, because the man is a poet, regardless of whether he says fuck now and then.
All that being said, I sometimes think that the man is a bit egotistical. In all fairness, though, I would say that a lot of his ego is earned. He really is all that. But sometimes that can be off putting to a person like me. And that was kind of how his first couple of chapters felt, that he was very full of himself, arrogant and egotistical–but I kept reading nonetheless. And now that I’ve finished the book, I wonder if maybe I should go back and reread those chapters, because the tone of the book seemed to change as I went along. Taylor began to get more personal. His words felt more real—more genuine, more authentic. And who knows? Maybe that was his plan all along, thinking that anybody who would make it through the first couple of chapters that might seem off putting were true fans who really wanted to know what he thought. But I’m just giving you a heads up if you’ve never read the book before—if you feel a little put off by the first couple of chapters, hang in there. Arrogant Corey becomes the very real Corey, a man who has a lot of important things to say. This treatise is not just railing against religion, but he’s truly challenging us to change the way we think.
By looking at the seven deadly sins as written just a few centuries after Christ, Taylor states that we shouldn’t be bound to those anymore. Now I would argue that the seven deadly sins as originally written were meant to be considered in addition to directives like the ten commandments and mortal sins, but as I said earlier, I think Taylor just wanted to use them as a way to talk about sin in general. At the end of the book, Taylor puts together a new seven deadly sins which he says are the things that people shouldn’t do if they want to live in a society and get along with people. For example, murder and child abuse are the top two sins on his list. And I think most of us would wholeheartedly agree that there are some things that we as a society should not tolerate. I’ll let you read his whole list and his rationale for each for yourself, but let’s just say I agree with his list and his philosophy.
So back to those first two chapters…if I had read them and then put the book down, never to read anything else written by Taylor, my opinion of him probably wouldn’t have changed. I have a pretty high opinion of the man overall because he’s intelligent and he has a hell of a way with words. As I mentioned earlier, I just sometimes dislike what seems like arrogance from him. But because I kept reading Seven Deadly Sins, I actually have a whole new opinion of the man. He’s funny. He’s witty. He’s pithy. And while you might say he’s opinionated, he backs up those opinions with facts or examples, which is all any good English teacher ever looks for.
In the end, I absolutely loved this book. And now I plan to read everything the man has ever written. I already have a couple more of his books sitting on my TBR pile.
Let me end with this: Corey Taylor is not just a metal icon. He is also a bit of a philosopher, one for my generation. This might have been my first Corey Taylor book, but it will not be my last. I thoroughly recommend this book, even if you’re not a huge Corey Taylor fan, because he makes some valid points that have nothing to do with metal music.
If you are a big fan, then know that this book is unlike other rock reads. It’s not a memoir. Don’t get me wrong: I read lots of rock memoirs and love them: Lita Ford, Stephen Pearcy, and a huge list of others that I want to read (that TBR pile never goes down!).
But this book was both more than that and less. He talks some about his past. In particular, there’s a chapter called “My Waterloo,” where he talks a lot about how his childhood shaped him. So, sure, there’s a bit of autobiography in the book, but it’s way more than that. As I mentioned, it is Taylor’s look at humanity and a suggestion on how to live your best life. This is a man who has lived life to the fullest and wanted to ponder how the idea of sin holds us back as a society, and I’m glad I read it.
If you’ve read it, tell me in the comments what you thought!

The ultimate compilation of rock star romance novels
If you’ve been following my blog over the last few months, then you know that I’ve been compiling lists of rockstar romance books. I’m trying to find ALL of them in every sub subgenre. I started out with just a couple of years (2011 and 2012), but then I realized there were far more books published than I’d realized.
Before I knew it, it became an obsession. I had to track down every single rock star romance novel ever written. It’s such a huge project that I’m still working on it months later. Every single list I created has been incomplete, so I’ve had to go back and add more books. Lots more. If you’ve been following along and have gone back to look at some of those earlier lists again, you already know this.
If you haven’t and you’re a rockstar romance reader, I invite you to check them out now. I’ll link to all the posts below to make your life easier.
I don’t know many real life rock stars. Although I’ve known a few local rock bands, I’ve never met any huge (like multi platinum around-the-world touring) rock stars. I’ve been close to them at concerts, but I have never done meet and greets or anything like that. So, other than local rock stars who haven’t made a big yet (not to say that they’re not good enough—they just haven’t been “discovered” yet), I don’t know many huge rock stars.
But my imagination? It goes wild.
I’ve been a fangirl since I was young. Although I couldn’t tell you the first rock star I had a crush on, I’m pretty sure I was a freshman or sophomore in high school (possibly younger), but the one I remember the most (and we’re talking dozens of rock star crushes) was George Lynch. At the time, he was the guitarist for the band Dokken (still one of my very favorite axe men). I had a long-lasting hardcore crush on the man, and even though I was young and naïve, I started writing my first “rock star romance” at the age of eighteen (I even wrote the first draft of the story that eventually became Bullet back then).
I imagine a good many of my colleagues who also write rock star romance have the same kind of vivid imaginations and love rock stars as much as I do. And so…for them, for me, and for all the readers out there who can’t get enough rockstar romance, I wanted to compile a list of every rocker romance novel I could find. When I first wrote Tangled Web, it didn’t take me long to wake up to the fact that my book was not in a brand-new subgenre. Very quickly, I saw Amazon connecting my book to other books very similar in scope. Still being quite new to indie publishing, I actually bought several of them and read them to see if what I was writing was similar to what these other authors were writing (plus I wanted to get an idea of how I should format). There were a few books I didn’t buy but years later I wondered about some of them. In fact, there was one in particular that I couldn’t remember the author name, cover, or title—but I remembered the plot described in the blurb and even the name of one of the characters, if that’s not crazy, and after searching for it about a year ago, I figured I’d never see it again.
But guess what? In my quest to find every single rock star romance ever written, I found it recently! And that just fueled my obsession because I thought, Wow! If I could find a book that I could barely remember, maybe I can help other readers do the same. I know it’s a common problem. There are several groups on Facebook, for example, where a reader will tell as much of the synopsis or any details about the book that she can remember, and other readers will try to help figure out what book the reader is describing so she can go back and find it in her Kindle library or on Goodreads. So with my quest, I’m hoping I can do that.
A few things of note: I’m not posting any synopses here on my blog, but I am posting links to every single book so you can view it yourself—the cover, the blurb, etc. I’m linking it first to Amazon (because most of my readers get their books from there), but if I can’t find it on Amazon, then I’m linking it to Goodreads. I’m hoping you’ll browse through the titles and think, “Oh yeah, I remember that book.” A few of you have already said that! It’s been a fun trip down memory lane! And I love trying to help solve some mysteries while I gather all these books together.
One other thing I want to let you know is that this is leading to an even bigger project. I’m not going to tell you exactly what it is yet, but just know that I’m working on something having to do with all things rock star romance, so stay tuned, because I’ll announce it here first. But no worries—if you’re connected to me on Facebook or my newsletter, I’ll make sure you know when that huge project is finished!
Now, without further ado, if you want to check out any of the posts having to do with tracking down every single rock star romance out there, I’ll link them all below so you can find them easily, and I’ll keep this list up to date. Before that, though, I’m going through all the lists I’ve already posted and adding all of the books that I’ve found since—and we’re talking hundreds of books that I hadn’t initially found. It’s incredible how many rocker romance books are out there! I also plan to, moving forward, post all new releases semi-annually. To keep them all connected and easy for you to find, all those links will be posted below (I’ll add future ones when the time comes).
Last but not least…enjoy! Good luck finding that book that you’ve had a hard time tracking down!

And the post that started it all: Is Rock Star Romance Really a Thing?
One more VERY IMPORTANT thing: whether you’re a reader or an author, if you see that I’ve made a mistake or missed a book (highly possible!), please don’t hesitate to leave me a comment, or you can fill out the Contact Me form on this page. I appreciate it, because I want this list to be as accurate and as complete as possible.
Some other things to keep in mind:
If you’re looking at the dates and they don’t seem right, maybe they don’t match up on Amazon, for example: know that the dates I’m assigning books to are the very first day those books were published. So maybe there’s a book that was published in 2012 but on Amazon it shows that it was published in 2013. Well, that just means that according to Goodreads and my records it was originally published in 2012. And it may have been republished in 2013 (sometimes due to rebranding but other times because an author got picked up by a traditional publisher). I’ve also tried to note when authors have more than one name/pseudonym that they’ve published that book under (but I may have missed some). I’ve also tried to note when they’ve changed the title or the series or anything like that, but it’s sometimes difficult for me to discern those things—so if you know something I don’t, please feel free to share! As an indie romance writer, I know I’ve done the same—sometimes just a slight tweak or a major change, and I don’t always inform Goodreads or anyone else about it. All the books I’ve shared are books that were published on at least one bookseller’s platform. If it was a story exclusive to an author’s mailing list, for instance, I’m not including it.All that is to say…please, if you notice anything that doesn’t look right, don’t hesitate to let me know. Thank you to those of you who’ve already contributed! But enough about the project. Happy browsing, my friend, and thanks for tuning in. Without further ado, scroll back up the page to find those links to the yearly lists. I hope you enjoy the memories just like some of my readers already have—remember those book hangovers, the book boyfriends you hated to love, the stories you never wanted to end!

Check Out These Rock Star Romance Novels Published in 2010 and Earlier (the ultimate list of new rocker romance)
Hey, my rockstar romance reading friend! If you’ve been following my posts for the last few months, then you know that tracking down old rocker romance books has become an obsession for me.
SERIOUSLY.
What’s cool about that, though, is that I’ve discovered so many books that I’ve missed from my past posts that I’ll be adding. But that’s also what sucks, because it’s more work. That being said, though, I know that rock romance was definitely a thing long before I thought it was. Keep reading to find out. I’m thinking I might still be missing a few, but I’ve managed to track down a bunch! Anyway, check them out.
Oh, and by the way…try not to notice how many books are simply named Rockstar/Rock Star. Hey! It was a new subgenre. Who could blame them? One more thing–unlike later books that came in 2011 and after, here you’ll see a couple of HUGE names. Not saying which ones…you’ll find out soon enough.

You might be asking yourself by now why I’m cataloging all these books. Well…what if you read a rock star romance you loved ten years ago and wanted to track it down again? This list might help! I’ve found a couple I only remembered the plot to (I couldn’t remember the title or the author–but as soon as I read a description, I knew!). I’ve linked to either Amazon or Goodreads so you can check them out.
And then, if you want more, you can check out my list for 2011. Or you can see ALL THE ROCKSTAR ROMANCE BOOKS FOR ALL TIME.

Rock Star , Jackie Collins – is it a romance? Ultimately, I don’t care. I’m putting it here because I think the late great Ms. Collins deserves recognition for first capturing on the page our obsession and adoration of rock stars. (I’ve read some of Collins’ works but not this one, and the summaries don’t seem to indicate romance, although it’s on the New Adult & College Romance charts on Amazon, so who knows? Ultimately, this is my list and I can do what I want, so here it is!

Get your fill of rock star romance: new rockstar releases of 2020
2020, a year that we will never forget. I think, more than ever, readers wanted more stories so they could escape what was happening in the real world. What I’ve always loved about rockstar romance is that, for me anyway, it involves a little more fantasy than other books, because they’re celebrities, so that makes them a little more unreachable. And we needed escape in 2020.

If you had any doubts of how popular rock star romance has grown, you need only compare this list to my 2011 list. There are more new releases that came out in May 2020 than in all of 2011. (Bear in mind I might have missed a few on either list…but still!)
Rocker romance is most definitely here to stay. Please leave me a comment if you notice any egregious errors. My lists are now an obsession and my goal is to track down all the rock star romance novels!

Tour with the band without leaving your couch: the ultimate list of new rocker romance in 2019
I am so happy and so lucky! I have so many friends I’ve met online because they started as readers—and they are huge rock star romance readers! Several of them have clued me in to authors or books that I’ve missed while putting together these lists. Thank you to everyone who contributed. LaDonna of Backstage Blogs sent me a HUGE list. So once I’ve caught up to present day, I’m going to go back through all the old posts and add all the books she reminded me of.
I say that because if you find something I’ve missed, please don’t hesitate to let me know. You won’t hurt my feelings. I don’t want to hurt another author’s feelings if I’ve missed a book (or a hundred)—and I know I have!
Anyway, enough of that! Let’s get to our list of the rock star romance books that were published in 2019!
(Oh, yes…and this is one of two years where I didn’t publish a rockstar romance book since I started indie publishing! I wish I could give you a solid reason why! For argument’s sake, let’s just say I was on hiatus.)

Why is amnesia such a good set up for a story? (Love and Redemption is coming soon!)
I have a couple of stories about people with missing memories—specifically, a character has amnesia. And, of course, their situations are automatically mysterious, because in both cases we don’t know why these people are missing their memories. They uncover those mysteries partially as they recover their memories.
Last summer, I released In a Haze which dealt with a woman who wakes up in a mental hospital with no memory of anything. That was a blast to write and readers loved it!
Later this week, Love and Redemption comes out. This book is based on a story I released a long time ago, during my first year as an indie publisher. But, y’all…I’ve rewritten the hell out of this story. I can’t even tell you how much better it is.
But amnesia…Love and Redemption is also about a woman who can’t remember anything. She wakes up on the bank of a river in the middle of a forest in the dark of night with no memory of how she got there or even who she is. She has no memory at all. As she rediscovers herself, she unravels the mystery of who she was, how she got there, and even why—but, more importantly, she discovers who she would rather be. Waking up with no memory has given her a second chance.
Holy cow, friends, I had so much fun making this story far more mysterious.
Love and Redemption is book 8 in the Small Town Secrets series, set in the fictional town of Winchester, Colorado. While it is a series, know that each story is a standalone even though each story is interconnected. You don’t have to read all of them to enjoy each one on its own.
That being said, book 1, Love and Lies will be free on Friday, 9/24/21, as well. Love and Redemption is currently on pre-order for 99 cents and will be for the first few days, so grab it ASAP!

I know you’re going to love this story. Our heroine wakes up with no clue of who she is and slowly begins to rediscover her past. As she remembers, she realizes that she’s no longer the person she once was.
How about a little teaser?

“Since when do you take creamer in your coffee?”
I hated this. “Since now.”
With a shrug, Max came back over to the bar where Lori and I stood. “So were you planning to see the doctor? Find out when you can expect to get your memory back?”
“That’s a good idea. Maybe they can find out if I damaged part of my brain. But…if I did damage my brain, what if it’s permanent?”
Lori said, “That’s exactly why you should see the doctor.” Although I nodded, I was a little at a loss—and Lori sensed it. “Look, you’re having a hard time right now. I’m not sure where to get all this information but, if you want, maybe I could help you go through your social media accounts or email to help you sort things out.”
That sounded overwhelming.
“Too bad you lost your cell phone. You probably stored all that stuff on it.”
Max said, “I think you lost it in the river.”
“No. It was in my purse.”
“Really?”
“Yes.” Where had I put that thing? “Hold on.” I headed toward the master bathroom and picked up the phone before going back to the kitchen. Max and Lori were speaking softly, and I started wondering if maybe they were more worried about me than they’d let on. I needed to assure them that, even though I couldn’t remember anything from before, I was fine otherwise.
But saying that might sound desperate, so I hoped my actions would prove it.
“See?” I said, holding out the phone.
Lori’s brows furrowed and Max half frowned. He said, “That’s not your cell phone.”
“Where did you find that?”
“It was in my purse. They gave it to me at the police station.”
“They must have mixed it up with someone else’s.”
I got ready to protest and then decided not to say another word, even though I knew better. After all, the odds of me knowing someone else’s passcode had to be a million to one—but I had voicemail messages on the phone to me, even from Max. Something deep inside told me to play dumb for now. “Oh.”
“You might have some of your information in your computer, though, or written down somewhere. If you want, I can help you find it.”
Max said, “You’ll probably want to get a new phone. In the meantime, though, I got hold of Hank and let him know you’re okay.”
I knew who that was now—his voice, the way he looked—but I was going to continue playing completely innocent. “Who’s Hank?”
Max inhaled, acting almost exasperated. “Man, you really don’t remember anything. Hank’s your boss. You practically worshipped the f**king guy.” I frowned and shrugged, glad that he was filling in some blanks for me but even more relieved that he couldn’t tell I’d learned a couple of things on my own. “You work for the Cantor Advertising Agency.”
Lori, using her imitation of my voice again, said, “You’re Chief Operations Officer and Manager of Domestic Accounts, and you worked your ass off to get where you are today.” Even the look on her face made me feel uncomfortable.
I really didn’t like how my sister portrayed me, because she obviously had a pretty low opinion. In fact, I was starting to wonder if she even liked me.
I wasn’t sure if I liked her, either. But I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt.
In the meantime—had I heard her correctly? That sounded like I was pretty far up the ladder at my place of employment. “Do I still have a job?”
Max laughed. “Of course, you do. I’m pretty sure the feelings between you and Hank are mutual. He said something about vacation time. You’ll have to ask him. He wondered if you were coming into work Monday.”
“Uh…”
“Do you want to call him now? You can use my cell.”
“I will. I just need a little time.” I wasn’t going to tell him I’d call my boss on my own phone when I was ready.
Max took the cell out of his back pocket and swiped at it. “Lori, got any paper in your purse?”
“Yeah.” She rifled through her bag and handed Max a little notebook and pen.
Max scribbled some numbers on the paper. “Here’s Hank’s number.”
Lori said, “We can take you to get a new phone, go shopping for groceries—”
I wasn’t going to say it out loud, but I didn’t trust these two. They should have been my lifeline at the moment, but something inside told me to be cautious—just for now. Hopefully, with time, I could grow to trust them and we could move on. For now, though, I needed time to sort through my own stuff.
By myself…

Why do we love rock stars? Rockstar romance novels of 2018
What is that about rock stars that gets our blood pumping? Is it because looking and listening to a rock star gets our imaginative juices flowing? Trust me when I say I’ve tried to analyze it many times. And every time I think I put my finger on it, I know I’m missing the mark.
I’ve tried to explain it. For example, I’ve tried telling my husband, why sometimes women find a bad boy appealing (I definitely do!). I suppose it happens on some visceral level—and it’s the same with rock stars. Lots of rock stars have that bad boy element to them. Is that part of it?
Perhaps.
I look back to my days in high school, when I started developing my first bad boy rock star crushes. Granted, that was back when I found most males appealing on some level because I was a walking hormone like every other teenager on the planet. I found athletes and actors attractive…but rock stars really did it for me. Why? Well, it began with their bad boy look, I’m sure (and many, like MC, had a reputation to go with it). They didn’t look like most guys. They had long hair, sometimes wore makeup. They sometimes wore lots of jewelry and their clothes were different. Add to it, they cursed in public. Some of them were extra naughty and had a reputation for fighting or drunken parties, drugs, and scandals. All of those different things just contributed to their bad boy image.
But I still don’t know that that’s the entire explanation for why rock stars appeal to us. I think it’s also because of the music. And I don’t mean just the music itself. The music is what pulls me in. And once I love the music, that’s when I connect to the lyrics. And if you listen to the lyrics, then you know that a lot of these rock stars are baring their souls to us. They’re letting it all out, bleeding on the airwaves. Their heartache, their hopes, their dreams, their past, all of those things they reveal to us. They appeal to our empathy, our sense of nurturing.
We also realize that these rock stars are sometimes a lot like us, right? Sure, they’ve attained fame and possibly fortune. But a lot of them come from backgrounds where they struggled for whatever reason, whether it was emotional, physical, financial, coming from a broken home, whatever. Many of them struggled to get where they are. But when you look at, for example, a Hollywood star…a good chunk of them were blessed with better-than-average looks. Sure, they have talent, but often it’s their looks that get them noticed.
Hollywood stars seem perfect; rock stars seem flawed. And maybe that’s part of why rock star romance is so appealing—because rock stars seem more attainable. And that’s actually true! Lots of my reader friends have shared with me time and again pictures of them, real people, with rock stars. Maybe they attended a show in an intimate venue or maybe they went to a meet-and-greet. But how often do you run into a Hollywood star? You can’t go to a movie and expect the star to walk out when you do. That’s not the way it works. But a concert, especially at a more intimate venue, you have a good chance of meeting a rocker or two. I’ve lost count of how many of my reader friends have pictures of them with rock bands. And they’re not always little bands you’ve never heard. I’m talking big bands, big stars who never got too full of themselves. So the possibility of a romance with a rock star seems a little bit more possible, right? That’s what I mean.
So, on that note, let’s take a look at the rock star romances of 2018. Whether these stories featured rock stars who were super famous or just starting out or somewhere in between, these were the books that filled our imaginations in 2018.
And CRAZY side note: 2018 and 2019 are the only years I never released a rock star romance novel. I couldn’t tell you why, although I have my suspicions. Let’s just say life gets a little crazy…but I’m back on track.
Anyway, without further ado, let’s get to the books!
