Nicki Sosebee #13
Thank you!!!
September 16, 2020
The Best Laid Plans…
I would be willing to bet a lot of hard-earned cash that a good many of my faithful readers (both past and present) have been a bit, shall we say, exasperated at my publishing pace over the past few years. Sometimes I’ll publish fast, other times slow. Last year was a drought year and this year hasn’t been too terribly bad. It looks good on paper, because I’ve refreshed/rebooted over a dozen books this year.
New content? As of today, September 16, 2020, I’ve only published two new books this year (Quarantined with the Billionaire and In a Haze). The third is scheduled to be released on October 23 (the long-awaited final book in the Nicki Sosebee series). Hardcore readers have been waiting a VERY long time for this book. I apologize for the wait but I promise you it was worth it. You’ll have to tell me after you read it, but I know you are going to LOVE it. (BTW, I’m still accepting ARC signups. If you’re interested, you can check it out here: https://forms.gle/rzgXe29EvsNVnaii7.)
All that (meaning when to expect new content from me) is going to change. I’ve been reading lots–about the craft of writing itself, marketing, and then just some stuff for fun. I’ve been experimenting and learning lots and taking notes as I go and one thing I learned was from bestselling author JA Huss (side note: she has a couple of video series that are AMAZING! I might be an established indie writer, but I learned soooooo much from her!). One thing that made a huge impression on me was when she spoke about consistency. Readers appreciate that (who doesn’t, right?), and they like knowing what to expect from writers. Before her words hit me smack between the eyes, I figured my whole problem was not getting enough exposure, but now I think it’s more than that. I think she’s absolutely freaking right–and I’m taking her advice (I doubt you’ll ever see this, Julie, but I wanted to let you know I am indebted to you for your invaluable wisdom!).
So here’s the plan. I don’t have the dates completely nailed down yet, but I want you to know what to expect from me. This is my tentative schedule for the coming year:
October 23, 2020: Front Page News, Nicki Sosebee #13 (BTW, here’s what’s up with Nicki if you missed it)
November 2020: Feverish #3
December 2020: Small Town Secrets #5 (I’m not sure I’ll have it ready by this date, but that’s what I’m aiming for!)
January 2021: Stripped (tentative title–standalone)
March 2021: Shake Me (Rock Stars on the Rise #1)
More to come, of course, but I hope you caught the pattern there. I’m going to try to give you a new book every other month. That’s my way of saying THANK YOU to all my faithful readers. Thank you for sticking with me. Thank you for reading my words. Thank you for everything.
After those books, what’s next? I have more books in the Tangled Web series and the Codie Snow series to write. I also have a royalty trilogy, a couple of standalones, and lots of other projects planned for the future! But that’s a list for another day!

The countdown to Nicki #13
So a lot of you know I’ve rewritten the Nicki Sosebee books (very light edits–no “changing of history”). New titles, new descriptions, complete relaunch. But I didn’t want Nicki fans to have to repurchase the books, so as I re-release them, I’m them five days for free.
But if Nicki is new to you and you’ve missed any of the free days, you’ll be happy to know that I will be offering the first twelve books for 99 cents until the release of #13.
Hardcore Nicki fans are wondering if I can publish Nicki #13 earlier than planned. To that I say, maybe! First, let me share my original plans with you.
Here’s the current timeline/plan, in case you’re willing to wait:

IN THE NEWS (#4) free 9/8-9/12
SPREADING THE NEWS (#5) free 9/13-9/17
BREAKING NEWS (#6) free 9/18-9/22
BAD NEWS FIRST (#7) free 9/23-9/27
NEWSWORTHY (#8) free 9/28-10/2
YESTERDAY’S NEWS (#9) free 10/3-10/7
NEWS FROM THE FRONT (#10) free 10/8-10/12
MAKING NEWS (#11) free 10/13-10/17
BEARER OF BAD NEWS (#12) free 10/18-10/22
FRONT PAGE NEWS (#13) live 10/23/20
Now…this timeline would be easy enough to switch up. As of this posting, books 1-5 are live and books 6-12, though not live, are all but ready to go–and #13 will be going to beta readers in the very near future, meaning it would be easy to speed up that process as well.
When I asked readers on Facebook what they would do to get me to release the book early, they hinted that it would be the same thing they’d do for a Klondike bar (if you remember that commercial). So here’s the Klondike bar offer:
I would love to see the first four books get 10 reviews each on Amazon (and I don’t care how many stars, because even “bad” reviews help readers figure out if they’d like a book–no reviews don’t!). As soon as that happens, I will fast track the last Nicki book. If all were to go well, I could probably, even with extensive beta feedback, have it ready to go before October.
Either way…Nicki #13 will be in your hands before Halloween!!!
If you want to help out, you can check out the Nicki Sosebee Stories!

Book Review: BookBub Mastery
Just a heads up: this book review will help authors more than my regular readers, but I know some of my author friends read my blog on occasion, so I wanted to post this here!
I absolutely loved Nick Thacker’s BookBub Mastery: An Indie Author Mastery Guide. I’ve been trying to step up my marketing game over the past few years, and BookBub is one cog in that machine.
I picked this book up on David Gaughran’s suggestion, and I’m glad I did. In 2017, I tried to develop a “system” similar to what Thacker describes in his book for applying for BookBub feature deals (and enjoyed a modicum of success), because I completely agree with him. You have to keep emotion out of the equation. The chances are in your favor of being rejected (they can’t accept everyone’s books!)–but, following the system Thacker recommends–your chances of getting a deal are more likely. And he includes all the ways in which he researched and tested his theories, telling you what you might need to change if you continue getting rejections.
I’m all in, because it’s taken me a long time to realize that indie publishing today isn’t like it was back when I started. My books need to be seen to be purchased! While I have some amazing hard core super readers, they’re not enough to be my bread and butter, even if I could publish two books a month. And while I run some ads and do promotions, what Thacker suggests is any idea I might have had–on steroids. Will I try his system? You bet. I’ve already started. If you’re an author wanting to “crack” BookBub featured deals, then you’re going to want to pick up this book!
Less than a week after I started, I got a BookBub deal. So if you have a little bit of an advertising budget (read: can afford a BookBub Featured Deal) AND you don’t mind spending a little on an educational book, I highly recommend this one. In fact, this book is the second in a series, so I’ll likely be buying the first one.
If you’ve read it already, please tell me what YOU thought!

Relaunch of Nicki Sosebee
I am soooo excited. The final Nicki Sosebee book is right around the corner, following a complete relaunch of the series. Slight editing of the first twelve books, new titles, new descriptions. And, on top of that, I’m offering the first twelve books free five days at a time leading up to the release of the last book!
This is bittersweet for me and lots of my readers. But it’s time.
If you’ve never read Nicki, here the description from book #1 (currently free right now!)
NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS (The Nicki Sosebee Stories #1) is free now through Friday, 8/28!
Nancy Drew she ain’t.
Since leaving school years earlier, Nicki Sosebee long ago gave up on the notion of The American Dream. She realizes early on that her college degree isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, but she also knows that she doesn’t want to work for minimum wage the rest of her life.
Her dream now? Learn the ropes as a novice reporter.
The job’s been boring…until now. One of Winchester’s bad boys has been locked up for arson, but Nicki soon finds there’s a whole lot more to the story. Her naïveté gets her in hot water at every turn, but her gorgeous best friend Sean Ramsey, self-employed motorcycle mechanic, helps keep her in check.
Unfortunately, he’s also distracting. And Nicki really needs to pay attention so she can write that story…before her name ends up in the obituary section.

And, if you have, then I hope you enjoy re-reading the series before you read the last one. I can’t wait for you to read the last one!

Everything is inspiring! (or how my latest book was born)
Well…maybe not everything. But just about. I can’t speak for my fellow authors out there, but I’ll tell you that my brain can be inspired by anything and everything–and I never know when inspiration is going to strike.
Currently, as you may know, I’m preparing to launch my last Nicki book. But not just a launch–I’m relaunching the entire series: new titles, re-edits (not reWRITE, mind you–the story’s the same; just a little cleanup), new descriptions. So that’s been taking up a lot of time. But in the middle of all that, inspiration struck. HARD. And it couldn’t be denied.
And it was the weirdest thing. My husband was rewatching a television show that he loved. The main character is in a mental health facility. I was sitting on the couch answering emails on my laptop, not paying attention, but hubby said something to me about the show–I can’t remember what he said, but it tripped a trigger in my brain.
And I wondered…what if you woke up in a mental health facility without remembering anything? And if you started to remember, could you trust those memories? After all, you’re in a psychiatric hospital. Your brain could be the enemy.
But what if it wasn’t?
So I hope you can understand why I dropped everything (and I do mean everything) and wrote the book that became In a Haze at lightning speed. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I think it’s one of the most perfect books I’ve ever written. Let me explain…
And this is kinda sad. I’m well-read. I love reading. So it’s not like I’m a stranger to story structure. Add to that, I have three degrees in English. A BA in English Literature, MA in English, MFA in Creative Writing. But you know what? Not a single one of the classes I took for my MFA dove deep into plotting. Not one. In fact, the last class I remember taking where we talked about story structure was in HIGH SCHOOL. And, folks, I’m no spring chicken. That was a long time ago. Now, I’m not saying I’m a shitty writer. I don’t believe that. But I could be better (couldn’t we all?). So I’ve been studying plotting and pacing over the past year and I wrote In a Haze by the book, so to speak.

IN A HAZE is live!
And not only that…it’s FREE through Monday, August 10.

What if waking up was like being reborn?
That’s what’s happened to me. I wake up, and I can’t remember anything.
I’m in a mental health facility, but I don’t know why I’m here. I don’t know who I am, and I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
After a while, I begin to suspect that they kept me in that haze intentionally…and now I’m awake.
My only salvation is the handsome man named Joe, a man who seems determined to protect me at all costs. As my life slowly unfolds before me, I begin to fall for him just as I realize I might not be able to trust him or anyone else around me. There is an ugly truth somewhere underneath all this.
But will I be able to maintain a sane frame of mind until I can discover what it is?
Or will they once more bury me in a haze?
I hope you love this book! Here are the details:

Romantic thriller?
You might have seen my post a couple of days ago about an upcoming new release I’m really excited to share with you. It should be coming out next month sometime very soon.
It’s not straight romance, not at all. I’d say it’s thriller-ish, perhaps romantic suspense? After you read it, you’ll have to tell me the best way to categorize it.
