Popular CBS Crime Show Just Switched Sherlock Holmes Actors
The super-popular CBS crime drama, Watson, is very much coming back for a Season 2. And, when the show does return, one character, who was only heard and not seen, will suddenly be played by a new actor. As a spinoff and reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes mythos, the TV series, Watson, focused on the titular doctor (Morris Chestnut) solving medical mysteries in the U.S., following the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes in the U.K. And, throughout Season 1, the voice of Holmes — at least in Watson's head — was played by Matt Berry, famous for What We Do in the Shadows, among other incredible projects.
But now, in Watson Season 2, Holmes will appear in the flesh, and this time, he'll be played by Robert Carlyle. This news comes from TVLine, in which showrunner Craig Sweeney was quoted as saying: "We are thrilled to have the mighty Robert Carlyle join the cast of Watson in Season 2."

James Bond fans will surely remember Carlyle from the 1999 movie The World is Not Enough, in which the actor played the villainous Renard. But Carlyle is perhaps equally as famous for his work in Trainspotting and The Full Monty. More recently, Carlyle played an alternate version of John Lennon in the 2019 film Yesterday.

What sounds like the plot of a low-budget horror film came to life in Aiken, South Carolina, in early July. Radiological Control Operations employees at the Savannah River Site found a radioactive wasp nest hanging on a wooden post near nuclear waste tanks.
The facility, owned by the United States Department of Energy, once produced basic components to create nuclear weapons. Throughout the Cold War, it produced the plutonium 239 the made up the core of bombs. Since then, the plant has switched focus to fuel creation and environmental cleanup.
SRS workers have implemented a new carrier to transport spent nuclear fuel, reducing the material processing time for permanent disposal in coming years. Read More: https://t.co/xEGLVGrcZf pic.twitter.com/fBfrgTabJE
— SRS News (@SRSNews) July 28, 2025
Radiological employees at the plant regularly test radiation levels to determine if there are any nuclear waste leaks on site. Those working on the morning of July 3 came across the wasp nest at 100,000 dpm, 10 times the amount of radiation allowed by federal regulation.
The wasp nest was sprayed with insect killer and disposed of as nuclear waste, according to a report from the Department of Energy. The report clarifies that no radioactive leaks were found from the nuclear waste bins nearby, but that the wasp nest was likely a "legacy contamination."
Legacy contaminations occur from prolonged exposure to leftover radioactivity from a once actively contaminated site. No further reasons for contamination were given by the Department of Energy, and officials claim there is no outstanding danger to anybody in the area. "The ground and surrounded area did not have any contamination," the report concludes.
In 2021, a similar incident occurred at the Savannah River Site when radioactive bird droppings were found on the roof of one of the buildings. That incident also read at a level of 100,000 dpm. It is referenced as a "similar occurrence" in the newest report by the agency.

An 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Kamchatka, Russia. The Videos Are Wild
Videos of the Kamchatka, Russia, earthquake shaking buildings, the ground, homes, and even a hospital surgery room have gone viral.
The 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck on July 29, triggering concerns about tsunamis in Hawaii and the west coast of the United States.
Although some sites said the quake was an 8.7 magnitude, Reuters put the magnitude at 8.8.
RT posted a video showing doctors in Kamchatka conducting a surgery when the quake hit. According to the site, they "kept calm during the powerful quake- and never stopped the surgery."

Lawmaker Stands Up to Delta
Earlier this month, Delta Air Lines President Glen Hauenstein announced that the company planned to expand its use of AI in setting its prices, sparking widespread criticism. Now, one lawmaker is pushing back against the airline.
During an earnings call last week, Hauenstein told reporters that about 3 percent of the airline's domestic ticket prices are already set using AI, and the company hopes to expand that to 20 percent by the end of 2025.
Hauenstein also boasted about Delta's partnership with Fetcherr, a tech company that claims to be able to "set the perfect price every time" using AI. He went as far as to compare the AI analysis to a "super analyst" that does not have the same limitations that a human analyst does.
“We’ve started this and I’d say what we have today with AI is we have a super analyst,” Hauenstein said, according to Airline Geeks. “We have an analyst that’s working 24/7, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And trying to simulate, given the same inputs that an analyst sees today, real-time, what should the price points be. And that output is different than what we have in the market. And so we’re letting the machine tell us, actually, go ahead and price in a very controlled environment.”
As Delta moves forward with this plan, though, there has been plenty of pushback with several Senators demanding answers, a former FTC chair issuing a warning about the ramifications of the change, and even a competing CEO condemning the move.

Now, one lawmaker is looking to stand against the change with actual legislation.
This week, Utah state Rep. Tyler Clancy announced that he is running a bill to prevent companies from setting prices for individuals based on their personal data.
"It's also a huge invasion of your privacy," Clancy, a Republican from Provo, told KSL.com. "I think that what my legislation is going to need to do is recognize this as not a recognized or acceptable business practice unless there's an explicit opt-in provision. It shouldn't be something that you opt out of."
Clancy provided an example that illustrates just why this type of personalized pricing is such a problem.
"Cinemark or AMC Theatres can recognize, 'Hey, Friday night, this is our peak pricing' ... so they're being transparent about why you're being charged more," he said, adding that it would be different if a theater charged a weekly moviegoer less than it charged someone who was going to see the same showing with a friend visiting from out of town. "It's the same night, it's the same movie, but one person's being charged more than the other."
"Consumer protection, I think, is largely viewed as more of a progressive issue, but consumer privacy, or privacy in general, is seen as more of a conservative issue," he said. "I do think there's a large overlap in setting some commonsense guardrails around this kind of really unique and invasive pricing that hopefully we can find some momentum here."
We'll have to see how this proposed legislation progresses.
Oprah Winfrey's Road in Hawaii Goes Viral Amid Tsunami Warning
"Oprah Winfrey's road" in Maui became a viral trend on X as Hawaiians rushed to safety amid a tsunami warning.
People alleged in viral videos that Winfrey was refusing to open her gated road for people trying to escape to safety. However, another online report then said the road was opened.
But does Oprah really have a private road in Hawaii?
Winfrey owns a ranch in Kula, HI, according to a 2024 article by Hawaii News Now.
That article reported that two men were arrested for trying to hunt on Winfrey's property. "Thompson Road is a public road that runs through private property owned by the Oprah Winfrey Ranch," that article notes. NBC News also reported in the hunting incident that there is "a public road that runs through Winfrey’s ranch in Kula."
However, News 8000 reported in 2019 that Winfrey does own a private road. She opened it to help evacuees of the Maui fire.
"Access to the road was given to county officials immediately. This was many hours ago. Hoping for the safety of all,” she wrote at the time of the Maui fire, according to News 8000.
People in Hawaii are reportedly trying to use Oprah’s private road to escape the tsunami but she/police have it closed off.

It was not clear, however, whether the gated road in the viral video was really Oprah's private road.
Travel.com wrote about Oprah's road previously. "Oprah's 870 acre ranch is right at the very end of Thompson Road in Kula. Drive as far as you can and you'll hit her wooden front gate. I was there around Christmas and it was decorated with a lovely wreath," the author noted.
A massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake in Russia sparked tsunami concerns on the island, which was under the tsunami warning from the National Weather Service.
"Look at this. I think they're trying to open Oprah's road. C'mon Oprah, save us... Everybody trying to get in,. Cops trying to open it. Nope, still closed," a man said in one viral video.

Oregon Tsunami Warning: Live Map, Arrival Times and Tracker
The entire Oregon coastline is under a tsunami advisory, according to the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
One of the largest earthquakes of all time, an 8.8 magnitude quake off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, on the evening of July 29 triggered the tsunami warnings and advisories.
NWS and NOAA issued warnings and advisories for all of the west coast of the United States, as well as Hawaii and Alaska.
Oregon so far is only under a tsunami advisory, which is one step lower than a tsunami warning.
A live map and tracker for Oregon's tsunami advisory produced by the NWS can be found here.
Waves can be expected to first arrive in Oregon as early as 11:35 p.m. July 29, according to NWS, though tsunami waves can continue to hit shores after that.
It's not yet clear how tall the waves will get once they reach Oregon, but they'll likely be less than a foot high, NWS Meteorologist Treena Jensen told KGW 8.
"There’s no indication that the tsunami would need to be upgraded to a warning for Oregon or Washington," Jensen said.
The Oregon Department of Emergency Management monitoring the situation said waves are not expected to exceed 1 to 2 feet in height. Coastal residents are not being urged to seek shelter, but they should still watch for danger.
Should the need arise, tsunami evacuation zones can be found here.
Tsunami waves have not caused major injuries or damage in Russia or Japan so far, according to the Associated Press. The earthquake driving the tsunami warnings did cause some minor injuries and building damage in Russia, but nobody has been reported dead.
The earthquake is the strongest in the world since a 9.0 magnitude quake in March 2011 off the coast of Japan, which caused the historic meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Japanese nuclear power plants have not reported any abnormalities, AP reported. But the company that operates the Fukushima plant has said roughly 4,000 workers are seeking shelter on higher ground and monitoring conditions.
Former FTC Chair Issues Warning on Delta Changes
Delta Air Lines sparked controversy last week when company president Glen Hauenstein announced that the company planned to expand its use of AI in setting its prices. But one former chair of the Federal Trade Commission does not sound enthused about the move.
During an earnings call last week, Hauenstein told reporters that about 3 percent of the airline's domestic ticket prices are already set using AI, and that the company hopes to expand that to 20 percent by the end of 2025. He also boasted about Delta's partnership with Fetcherr, a tech company that claims to be able to "set the perfect price every time" using AI.
Hauenstein compared the AI analysis to a "super analyst" that does not have the same limitations that a human analyst does.
Delta's plan has already sparked concern from a number of different lawmakers, with one going as far as to call the move "predatory." Now, a former FTC chair is speaking out about the move.
During a recent podcast appearance, Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan spoke out about Delta's AI use in setting its fares, issuing a major warning to customers about the potential ramifications of such a move.
"This idea of surveillance pricing, where not only is your data being collected on you, but then it is being used against you to price as much as you will pay," Biden-era Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan told the Chuck ToddCast last week. "So, imagine you had a death in the family, and you got an email notice about where the services are going to be. You go to buy a plane ticket and the airline company knows you are trying to get to a funeral. It's an emergency, and maybe they'll overcharge you, right?"
Clearly, Delta's plan is controversial, with one competing CEO even expressing concern.
It will certainly be interesting to see how this all plays out.
California Tsunami Warning: Live Map and Tracker
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued tsunami warnings and advisories for all of California's coastline on July 29 in the evening.
One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in Russia triggered tsunami warnings all over the Pacific Ocean, and NOAA is warning Californians waves will likely hit their shores.
The agency on its website shows a live map and tracker for tsunami updates, found here.
Another live map and tracker produced by the National Weather Service can be found here.
Tsunami waves are expected to hit California between 11:50 p.m. July 29 and 1:15 a.m. July 30, according to the NWS.
An 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, a peninsula on the eastern edge of the country, north of Japan.
California's Geological Survey Tsunami Website includes a preparedness guide, which outlines hazard areas and urges residents to stay out of those areas until officials say it's safe to return.
A map of the state's tsunami hazard areas can be found here.
Most of southern California is currently under a tsunami advisory while Humboldt County and north of there is under a more severe tsunami warning, according to NOAA's map.
So far, the tsunami waves have not caused major injuries or damage in Russia or Japan, according to the Associated Press. The earthquake that set off the waves did cause some minor injuries in Russia, as well as building damage, but nobody has been reported dead.
The earthquake is the strongest in the world since a 9.0 magnitude quake in March 2011 off the coast of Japan, which caused major damage to the island nation, including the historic meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
So far Japanese nuclear power plants have reported no abnormalities, AP reported, and the company that operates the Fukushima plant has said roughly 4,000 workers are seeking shelter on higher ground and monitoring conditions.
Flights Diverted From Hawaii as Tsunami Threat Looms
Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines are diverting flights away from Hawaii as a tsunami threat looms.
The state of Hawaii is under a tsunami warning on July 30 as a result of a massive 8.7 earthquake in Russia. That's according to the National Weather Service.
As a result, travelers headed to Hawaii are, in some cases, finding their planes redirected back to the mainland.
According to KIRO 7, Alaska Airlines is "temporarily holding or diverting flights bound for Hawaii in response to a tsunami warning issued for the Hawaiian Islands and parts of Alaska."
As a precaution, "some flights already en route to Hawai‘i are being redirected back to the mainland or diverted to alternate locations," the site reported.
“We are monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations. We are holding flight departures to the Islands on Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines." the airline said, according to Hawaii News Now. The two airlines operate under the same corporate umbrella.
Alaska Airlines is offering flexible travel due to the tsunami warning"Due to a tsunami warning we are offering a flexible travel policy to/from Oahu (HNL), Kona (KOA), Kauai (LIH), and Maui (OGG) if you would like to change or cancel your flight," Alaska Airlines says on its website.
"Flights may be delayed or canceled. Please monitor your regularly. Sign up for flight notifications and we'll notify you of any last-minute delays, cancellations, or gate changes on your flights by email or text message," the airline wrote.
The policy affects travel to Maui, Oahu, Kona, and Lihue, HI. The affected dates are July 29 and July 30.
“We are monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement to KIRO 7. “Guests with travel to, from or within the Hawaiian Islands should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.”
