Movement Specialist Breaks Down 5 Easy Cues for Perfecting Your Deadlift Form
If you’re new to the gym, chances are someone’s already told you the best bang-for-your-buck move is the deadlift, and they’re not wrong. This full-body compound lift hits nearly every major muscle group: back, core, glutes, hamstrings, forearms, you name it. But depending on who you ask, the deadlift also comes with a big, blinking caution sign. Some lifters swear it’s one of the top causes of injury in the gym (a claim most powerlifters would roll their eyes at while pulling 500 pounds).
Still, proper form is crucial if you want to stay injury-free and keep pulling for the long haul. In a recent video, fitness expert Jeremy Ethier broke down five easy cues that anyone, rookie or seasoned lifter, can use to clean up their deadlift form.

5 Easy Cues for Perfecting Your Deadlift Form1. Create the PillarNothing is more important in the deadlift than setting your body up correctly before you ever touch the bar. If you’re standing too close or too far away, the movement breaks down, and you’re more likely to overcompensate somewhere else, increasing your risk of injury. Below, Ethier breaks down the proper way to set up a deadlift:
How to Do ItTo start, walk up to the bar and line it up with the middle of your foot so it's right over your shoelaces. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and toes facing forward. From there, focus on stacking your hips and ribs to protect your back. Tilt your pelvis back like you're trying to bring your belt buckle to your chin. Brace your core so everything’s aligned. To hold that position, squeeze your glutes and inner thighs, standing tall. Then make fists and press them down toward the ground to activate your lats.2. Grabbing the Bar"When you perform deadlifts, keep the pillar we created in step one, and start pushing your hips back while keeping your fists pushing straight down under your shoulders," Ethier says. "You want to continue pushing your hips back as far as you can without your big toes coming off the ground. Once you reach that endpoint, bend your knees and bring your shins to the bar to pull yourself down those last few inches. Keep going until you can hook your hands onto the bar just outside your knees."
3. Creating the WedgeOne of the most important pieces of deadlift form is something lifters call "the wedge"—a strong, braced position that protects your lower back. To create the wedge, drive your knees out against your arms, take a deep 360-degree breath as if pushing into a belt, and brace your core like you’re about to take a punch. Lift your chest to stand tall from hips to head, then squeeze your lats like you’re crushing oranges in your armpits.

4. PushMost people call the deadlift a pull movement—and technically, they’re right. But that label can be misleading when it comes to how the lift should actually feel and be performed.
"To avoid this, a deadlift technique to use is to imagine your arms were ropes with hooks at the end of them, just hanging onto the bar," Ethier says. "Then, to lift the weight, rather than going from 0 to 100 and jerking the weight off the floor, keep the tightness we created in step three and think about pushing the floor away with your feet harder and harder until the bar lifts off the ground."
5. DescentIf you’ve spent time in a gym where deadlifts are common, you’ve probably seen someone slam the bar down and shout in triumph over a supposed PR. But if you’re still learning proper form, it’s best to leave the ego lifting at the door.
"Many people tend to let the bar sway forward in front of them, which causes a lot of stress on the low back. Instead, push your hips back and slide the bar down as close as possible along your thighs. As soon as the bar passes your knee caps, that’s when you can bend your knees and slide the bar along your shins to get the bar back over your mid-foot."
Luka Dončić’s Offseason Lakers Recruiting Sparked Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart Signings
The trade that sent Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers made an obvious and understandable emotional impact on the 26-year-old superstar. Doncic made it known he planned to spend his career with the Mavericks before the trade that shook the NBA landscape.
However, after wrapping up his first stretch as a member of the Lakers, it appears Doncic's mindset has shifted, and his feelings on the trade are in the rearview mirror. Most importantly, that change began before he signed a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Lakers.
Luka Doncic's Role in Recruiting Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to LakersDoncic, along with fellow star LeBron James, knows what the Lakers need to be legitimate title contenders. And as ESPN's Dave McMenamin revealed, the five-time All-NBA First Team guard "displayed urgency" in his offseason fitness regimen.

Even more interesting, Doncic also took an active role in recruiting two noteworthy offseason signings for the Lakers—Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, per McMenamin.
"Doncic might have made a multiyear commitment to the Lakers, but he expects to be in contention every year. Doncic displayed his urgency through his offseason fitness regimen and taking a role in recruiting both Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to L.A." McMenamin explained.
The team's decision to add the former Portland Trail Blazers center and longtime Boston Celtics guard, who spent much of the last two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, was hyper-focused on addressing glaring holes in the Lakers roster.
Doncic's Impact on Ayton & Smart Signings Could Pay Dividends
While Ayton has faced scrutiny at times in his NBA career, the former No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA draft, the same year Doncic was selected No. 3, has undeniable talent. He also has the potential to thrive alongside Doncic and James.
Ayton now finds himself in a position where he'll have ample space to work with on the floor alongside the Lakers' two stars and Austin Reaves. It's also safe to assume that Doncic and James could be key to helping unlock even more upside for the 27-year-old.
As for Smart, the beloved glue guy for the Celtics over his nine seasons in Boston, he brings something different to the Lakers. Some may argue that Smart's defensive tenacity and ability to do a bit of everything were as pressing a need for the team as any other.
Smart was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and has made the NBA's All-Defensive First Team on three occasions (2019, 2020 and 2022).
While Smart has rarely been tasked with providing a score-first mentality, his well-rounded skillset is a perfect fit with the new-look Lakers. Even still, Smart did showcase his ability to find the bottom of the basket during an injury-shortened first season with the Grizzlies. Over 20 games, he averaged 14.5 points, 4.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
Doncic, James and the Lakers have the pieces, partially thanks to the former's offseason role as a recruiter. Now comes the question of whether they can mesh quickly and become legitimate championship contenders.

Delta Air Lines Breaks Silence on Controversial Pricing Change
Earlier this week news broke that Delta Air Lines doubled down on its plans to use an AI system to dynamically set ticket pricing.
The airline said it plans to deploy AI-based revenue management technology across 20 percent of its domestic network by the end of 2025 in partnership with Fetcherr, an AI pricing company. Delta Air Lines currently uses the platform for 3 percent of its domestic flights.
"We like what we see, we like it a lot, and we're continuing to roll it out," Delta's president said during a recent investor call.
What Do Experts Say About the Change?Clint Henderson with the travel website ThePointsGuy.com claimed integrating artificial intelligence takes the dynamic pricing model up to 11.
"Airlines already have a huge team of revenue managers who are looking to see what demand is like in different markets, what days of the week they should raise, when they should lower prices, how fare buckets are selling or not selling, and adjusting prices accordingly," Henderson said. "So instead of having ten humans doing pricing, they'll have a machine doing it for them."
Meanwhile, just last week, Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner and Richard Blumenthal said they believed the Atlanta-based airline would use AI to set individual prices, which would “likely mean fare price increases up to each individual consumer’s personal ‘pain point.'”
Delta's Response to the UproarIn a response to the senators, Delta Air Lines made it clear the airline isn't taking the personal data from customers in an effort to offer more dynamically priced tickets.
“There is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing or plans to use that targets customers with individualized prices based on personal data,” the company said, via Reuters.
“Furthermore, we have zero tolerance for discriminatory or predatory pricing and fully comply with applicable laws in privacy, pricing and advertising. Our Al-powered pricing functionality is designed to enhance our existing fare pricing processes using aggregated data. This technology is a decision-support tool that simply provides informed insights for our analysts, who oversee and fine-tune the recommendations to ensure they are consistent with our business strategy.”

Lollapalooza Sparks Outrage With Disappointing Decision
Chicago – The opening night of the Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago's Grant Park was largely successful, with Tyler, the Creator making it in time despite travel issues, Luke Combs making history with his performance, and Gracie Abrams bringing out a music legend for a full-circle moment. But the day was not without its issues.
Predicting demand for artists is not always easy, given how quickly pop culture trends change and the amount of pre-planning that goes into festival scheduling. As a result, sometimes issues arise with festival organizers radically underestimating the draw of certain performers, placing them on smaller stages that are not reasonably capable of accommodating the demand.
I first experienced this at Lollapalooza with Dominic Fike's performance back in 2022, when he was booked for The Grove stage despite starring in HBO's hit show Euphoria and the popularity of his hit song "3 Nights."
Last year, to Lollapalooza's credit, festival organizers anticipated an issue with Chappell Roan's scheduled stage, ultimately deciding to move her performance from a smaller stage to the main stage – a move which proved wise when it was one of the most popular performances of the entire weekend, headliners included.
This year, however, Lollapalooza failed to make similar arrangements for Role Model. The festival was wholly unprepared for his popularity and draw, and it led to a chaotic, unenjoyable, and potentially dangerous situation for fans.
Role Model, whose real name is Tucker Harrington Pillsbury, is an American singer and songwriter who has exploded in popularity over the past several months after the release of his latest album Kansas Anymore, selling out venues across the country, leading to eye-popping resale ticket prices.

Erika Goldring/Getty Images
He has become especially popular among younger fans, with videos from his performances regularly going viral on TikTok with Role Model regularly inviting guests on stage to dance to his hit song "Sally, When the Wine Runs Out," with some especially famous guests including Natalie Portman, Dylan Minnette, Bowen Yang, Conan Gray, and Renée Rapp.
It should have taken one trip to one a Role Model show, or even a slight glance at the numbers his videos do social media, for a festival organizer to realize that he was one of the most popular artists in the entire festival lineup. But somehow, he ended up booked at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday afternoon on the Tito's stage – one of festival's smaller stages opposite of the larger Bud Light Stage where Luke Combs performed as the headliner a few hours later.
The stage was too small and far too limited of a viewing area compared to the larger main stages, forcing fans to be crowded into a small area. The stage didn't even have video screens to accomodate the fans watching from afar and the sound was nowhere near loud enough to reach the fans at the back of the audience.
Predictably, the crowd was far too big for the venue, and it was a disaster.
they put role model at way too small of a stage at lolla the crowd is crazy lol pic.twitter.com/P9n7FQ3zfO
— 🦋 (@carelessluv) July 31, 2025
In the minutes leading up to the performance, fans pushed in from all sides, squishing fans together and pushing some spectators into the barricades and walls. The crowd expanded so far back that it was difficult to even walk past the stage to get elsewhere in the festival grounds.
The area was so dense with people that media had trouble even get through the crowd into the media access pit. Several media members had to hop the barricade with the assistance of fans and others simply turned around and didn't even try to fight the crowd.
Some fans eventually realized that the crowd was simply too big and there was no way they were going to get a view of the stage and began moving around the back of the stage in the Bud Light backyard to try to get a glimpse of the performance from there.
Quite simply, there were far too many people in far too small of a space. At best, it was unenjoyable for fans. At worst, it was dangerous and it was fortunate that no serious incident ocurred.
Regardless, fans were not happy about the festival's decision to place Role Model on such a small stage.

"lolla put role model at tito’s so now every person under 30 has to fight for a space to stand and not even see him very cool things happening," one fan wrote in a post on X.
"Role model at tito’s stage was probably the worst decision lollapalooza could’ve ever made. this is the most packed and unsafe crowd," someone else added.
"plz start putting bigger artist on the bigger stages i beg. why tf was role model on some tiny stage??? i literally couldn’t make it to the stage because everyone wanted to see him but there was no room," someone else wrote.
"they put role model at way too small of a stage at lolla the crowd is crazy lol," another person added.
"in tears at role model bc i couldn’t even get a glimpse of him ….. @lollapalooza i have never in my life been so disappointed in you!!!!! he should’ve been at a main stage and you know that !!!!!" someone else wrote.
"hey so why is role model at this small ass stage with like minimum volume and no screens…….. let a lot of us down btw," another fan wrote.
Ultimately, the show still went smoothly and there were no significant incidents related to the size of the crowd. Still, it was a dangerous situation and there were a lot of disappointed fans and frustrated media members, and it all could have been avoided.

Bradley Cooper Had Talks With James Gunn About ’Superman' Role as Lex Luthor
You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who’s seen the new Superman movie and had many, if any, negative feedback about the performance Nicholas Hoult gave as Lex Luthor. Looking back, Hoult was essentially the perfect actor to cast in the pivotal role, and is primed to be a key piece of potential sequels to Superman.
However, director James Gunn admitted he also spoke to another popular actor about the role, revealing that he had a brief conversation with Bradley Cooper about potentially portraying the villain in Superman.
James Gunn Details Decision Not to Move Forward With Bradley Cooper as Lex LuthorWhile Hoult's fit as Lex Luthor likely made Gunn's decision much easier in the end, the co-CEO of DC Studios explained how things played out with Cooper.

Jeff Spicer/Getty Images for Warner Bros
During a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn explained what led to the decision not to bring Cooper further along into casting consideration for Superman, as ScreenRant detailed.
"I did talk to Bradley about it," Gunn said. "We had a short conversation and at the end...I did want Lex to be someone that was more [of a] contemporary of Superman's."
Gunn's desire to have a younger Lex Luthor makes sense, as he highlighted how important the character is to Superman, and specifically, "to the future of the DC universe."
The director did have high praise for Cooper, though, admitting that the Silver Linings Playbook star would have been a "great" Lex Luthor.
"Bradley would have been a great Lex. I mean...Bradley's great at everything," Gunn added.
Although Cooper wasn't cast as Lex, the 50-year-old actor did portray Superman's father, Jor-El, following in the steps of a few other well-known actors to play the role. Nelson Leigh played the part in the 1948 Superman film, along with Marlon Brando in the 1978 film Superman: The Movie. Russell Crowe was the most recent name to play Jor-El, doing so in Man of Steel, which was released in 2013.
James Gunn Already Working on New DC Movie With 'Major' Superman RoleWhile Superman continues its box office surge after hitting theaters less than one month ago, Gunn is already gearing up for what's ahead in the DC universe.
In a recent post on Threads, Gunn stated he was "sequel writing," immediately leaving Superman fans excited about the movie's encore. However, Gunn clarified that the current script is not the specific sequel to the movie in theaters, but that it will feature Superman in a "major role."
"Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It's not 'Superman 2,'" Gunn wrote.
Regardless, after the success of DC's latest superhero film, there's no question that fans are excited about what lies ahead. Gunn has already spoken about Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, who had a cameo in Superman, as well as an upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

Bill Gates has seen a lot of technological revolutions in his time, but even he’s surprised by the blistering speed of AI’s evolution. In a recent interview with CNN, the Microsoft cofounder sounded the alarm, warning that artificial intelligence is improving so rapidly that it could replace entire categories of jobs before workers have a chance to adjust.
AI Could Outpace Workers' Ability to Adapt“The question is, has it come so fast that you don’t have time to adjust to it?” Gates told CNN. He pointed to AI’s rapid gains in areas like telesales and administrative work, which are already seeing automation take hold. But even more complex roles could be next, and Gates admits the timeline is impossible to predict.
The Ticking Clock: One Year or Ten?What worries Gates isn’t just AI’s capabilities. It’s the uncertainty. “AI today can replace human work, the most complex coding tasks, [but] it’s not able to do [it] yet,” he said. “And people in the field disagree: is that within the next year or two, or is it more like ten years away?”
This wide range of estimates makes it difficult for workers, especially those in entry-level or white-collar roles, to plan their careers. One thing is clear: AI is no longer a future concern. It’s a present disruption.
Business Leaders Preparing for Mass Job AutomationGates isn’t alone in his assessment. Leaders at Amazon, Meta, and Anthropic have all publicly stated that AI will be as capable as human workers in many roles within a few years. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei even predicts up to 50 percent of entry-level white-collar jobs could be automated in five years.
Companies like IBM are already reshaping their workforces, eliminating thousands of roles in HR and administrative departments as AI tools automate routine tasks.
A Productivity Boom, But At What Cost?Gates remains optimistic that AI’s productivity gains can be a net positive if handled properly. “When you improve productivity, you can make more [jobs],” he said. “It means you can free up these people to have smaller class sizes or have longer vacations or help to do more, so it’s not a bad thing.”
But the short-term impact, especially for early-career workers, will depend on how quickly industries can reimagine job training and create new pathways.

One NFL QB Is Saying Goodbye to Skittles and Hello to Hydration
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is entering his third season in the NFL.
The former Florida Gators star was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but his first two years in the league have been a roller coaster.
As such, Richardson is out to prove it even more in Year 3, especially with former first-round pick Daniel Jones in the QB room. And, Richardson is even making changes to his diet, including eliminating candy.
Colts QB Dumping Skittles, Other CandyWith the preseason officially underway, Richardson revealed that he is now focusing more on his diet, according to Stephen Holder of ESPN.
"I had to cut the sweets out, man," Richardson said. "It's the candy. I used to be big on Skittles and all that stuff, just eating candy all the time. So, I've been just trying to cut out the sugary stuff and hydrate more. I need to be more of a pro when it comes to my eating."
For Richardson, the healthier diet is a start, and hydrating more is another way he can take better care of his body.
According to Holder, Richardson lost 10 pounds in the offseason and is now at 240 pounds, and the young signal-caller is making a more focused effort to work on his body.
Richardson's Skittles Craze Was Evident in CollegeRichardson has been a big fan of Skittles, and he was often seen with a bag even during his days with the Florida Gators.
"No more Skittles for Anthony Richardson?!?! I remember him regularly carrying a bag on his way into The Swamp..." Matt Baker, a college football reporter for The Athletic, wrote on X.
Baker also posted a clip of Richardson walking with a bag in his hand in 2022.
