Robotech...

This was a commission for my friend Eric Grubb back at Baltimore Comic Con. I finally got a chance to clean up the scans and get a good final image of it. Hopefully I can get Simon on the colors for this soon! I've always really enjoyed the giant robot genre of anime, and Robotech/Macross has been one of my favorites. This giant, tech robot kind of work isn't something I get to do very often, but actually I quite enjoy it. GI Joe/Transformers would be a dream book for me. Until then, I can be content with the occasional giant robot commission. I've finished a fun double page Transformers, and now Robotech commission both this year. All I need is for someone to request a giant Mobile Suit Gundam piece and I think I'd feel complete.

Joe-A-Day: Baroness again!

OFFICIALLY wrapping up Joe-A-Day sketches for now. I know it's sad to see it go. I will be coming back to GI Joe characters this March, so it's only a month and a half hiatus. I have other commissions and projects to catch up on. I have plenty of Joe commissions still to do leading up to Joe Con in April.

This sketch was another of the Signature Series art plates for IDW Limited that I had Simon Gough color up for me. This was a chance to show how scrappy she can be. She's one tough lady, and rarely down for the count. I drew her all battered and having a rough day, but again with the colors it really comes to life!

Joe-A-Day Baroness...

This was one of those IDW Signature series sketches I did last year. I had Simon color it up and we realized this is the first Baroness he's ever colored for me. Crazy to think we've worked together for almost 4 years now and this is the first, but there you go.

A pretty classic Baroness is always fun to do!

Joe-A-Day: Sgt. Slaughter....

AT EASE, DISEASE!
Man, I love this guy. I know he came a bit later in the 80's GI Joe run, so he's not everyone's favorite. For me, it was the first time GI Joe really came to life. I could watch this guy on the GI Joe cartoon, then watch him wrestle on the TV as a real person. On top of that, Sgt Slaughter was such a large personality, you couldn't help but notice this guy. In the cartoon when he first appeared in the cartoon he took on just a huge squad of Battle Android troopers. AND HE WASTED THEM!
So for this sketch I wanted to reflect that. I met the Sarge this last year in NYCC and he's every bit the personality you'd expect. He's obviously older, but man that chin is still just as intimidating. My sketch is certainly how I'll always remember him in my mind!

Joe-A-Day Wrap up...

I've got some catching up to do on my posts! Part of the delay was just holiday craziness and of course deadlines to finish. The Joe-A-Day sketch event was a blast for me to do! It gave me a chance just to focus on GI Joe again for awhile has been exciting.

I will definitely be doing another Joe-A-Day sketch month, leading up to April 10th-12th for the GI Joe Convention! The convention will be held in my hometown of Springfield, IL. I'll have commissions for the show, Joe Con related artwork to finish, and I'll be spotlighting that on my blog starting March 10th!

Until then I do have plans for a few more themed weeks including another themed month in Feb! I will have GI JOE artwork posted throughout when it gets done, or when it's work from projects that I can finally show publicly.

For today's post we have the colors to the Outback piece by Simon Gough, colored over the line art I finished a little while ago! Again prints are available to purchase directly through this blog, just send an inquiry to the email below! Or if you'll be heading to the Joe Con in April I will have them available there!

Joe-A-Day: Cover Girl colors...

Here's an update on a previous sketch. I've been really excited about this one, I've needed a well done Cover Girl to add to my print library. Simon's work on this really makes it pop. I've got two versions here, since her hair color has been known to change in it's various iterations. I was never a fan of the short bob haircut though, so I definitely avoided that.

Let me know which you think is "your" Covergirl!

Joe-A-Day: Outback...

Outback. What a perfect example of how awesome GI Joe can be! Raise your hand (and be honest) how many of you know who Outback is?

Now you die hard Joe fans who read the comics and actively collected the toys...You'll know this dude. You might even know that the "Survival" on his shirt isn't his just his job description, it's an acronym from the U.S. Army Ranger Handbook
Size up the situation.Undue haste makes waste.Remember where you are.Vanquish fear and panic.Improve your situation.Value living.Act like the natives.Learn basic skills. What I love most about Outback is how he exemplified what was done in the Marvel comics run of the 80's. He was part of a small team mission in issue #61. In that issue 3 members of his team were captured. Stalker, Snow Job and Quick Kick. He was told to leave and head back to Joe headquarters to get help. HE DIDNT WANT TO GO, but obeying orders went anyway.
They continued this story in the Special Missions #6 comic. This story cross over was fantastic! Making it back to Joe headquarters undetected shows Outback's skills, but also his character. Back at headquarters Leatherneck and Mutt (also two favorite Joes of mine!) lay into this guy for leaving Joes behind on the mission and there's a brief confrontation between them all. There's just so much story and character depth in each one of these books. I love that it crosses over, but doesn't take a big summer event to do it, instead the cross over is a single story about one GI Joe and his struggle with fitting into the team. Man...so good!
Joe-A-Day: Outback - 727
This Original Art is available to purchase!9x12 Inked Included in the price is a full color print and all insured shipping costs!

This guy is a survivor first. It makes sense why my good friend Johnny Tsai loves this character! Waysun Johnny Tsai (the creator of the Cuma Tak Ri knife I use for Snake Eyes) also teaches wilderness survival training as well as martial arts instruction.

Joe-A-Day: Lowlight Colors!

Not quite a "New" drawing today, since we've already seen this Lowlight. However, I did want to show what Simon had cooked up on this one! I've got quite a list for him of Joe characters to color up. As he gets them completed I'll be posting them here on the blog and each will be available to order as a print.
