America's Army UPDATE...
I'm currently working on a mini-series for the America's Army comic book. It's all done through the U.S. Army and published by IDW, but made available for free online! The main title just had issue #12 come out, which I was able to do the cover for! Anyone that has enjoyed my work on GI JOE and likes straight up military stories should check out the series, and the upcoming mini-series America's Army: Officers that I'm doing the interior art on as well.

I was recently interviewed and a video was made that talks about my career so far and my involvement about America's Army. I want to send out a huge thanks to Jerry Williams for the production of a very well made video, and Zack Sherman (writer/art director) for his direction on the book and the property!
Here's some more preview art of the upcoming series, heavy on the action but focused on the Officers that serve!

Joe-A-Day: Zarana...
A classic mercenary character from the ranks of the Dreadnok gang! Zartan was my first GI Joe "Bad Guy" figure growing up. He changed colors, came with a cool little swamp jet ski. Man he was the best! Through the cartoons I got to know Zarana and I remember having her figure as well and I'd team them up on missions.
This drawing for today isn't her original release costume/uniform, but still she's a recognizable Dreadnok that I'd avoid in a dark alley! Like many of the recent posts this was for the GI JOE Battleground game. I was happy to get to draw this character especially for the game.
Joe-A-Day: Zarana - 724
This Original Art is available to purchase!11x17, As is Penciled - $200Upon request, I can ink it for $300 total. Shipping is flat rate $15 domestic
This was a set of companion Dreadnok pieces Simon and I worked on this last year as well!

Joe-A-Day: Darklon....
Alright, I gotta throw my hands up on this one. I had no idea who Darklon was when I was told to draw this guy for the GI JOE Battleground game. I mean from it's original 1982 inception there have been 528 GI JOE characters created....So I gotta say I'm not going to sweat not knowing a few.
However, the one thing I remembered about this guy is way back when I had drawn a cover for Devil's Due America's Elite #33 where I drew every Cobra character created to that point...I HATED drawing this Darklon helmet. I had no idea who this guy was, but MAN his helmet was a tough nut to crack.
Then again for the WWIII event for Devil's Due I was tasked with designing the "Plague" group of Cobra characters. Again, it was a basic design across the group but they retained their original helmet or head pieces, and this Darklon helmet was a bane to draw.
A third time this character strikes to defeat me, but finally I was able to break this helmet down, work it out and it really wasn't that difficult this time around.
Darklon..I still don't have a clue who you are and I have no desire to find out... and your gun is weird.

Joe-A-Day: Quick Kick...
Another piece from GI Joe Battleground! I know I'm flooding my blog with these a bit, but it's Joe artwork I haven't been able to show until now. What better time then a "Joe-themed" month of artwork!
This Quick Kick was one of the first I did for the game and is still one of my favorite. I'm mostly just showing the art I liked best from my work on the game, but this had lots of energy and expression. Plus it was his classic uniform...if you can call being topless, shoeless and wearing pants from a gi, a uniform.
This was the first time I had tried a rendering technique like this on his nunchucks, I liked how it was able to show motion by leaving the spinning nunchuck as negative space and just rendering the blur. Okay enough artsy talk, more action!

Joe-A-Day: Crimson Guard Commander...
Another GI JOE: Battleground piece. I didn't get the chance to do many of the Cobra characters for the game, it would've been great to go through a whole list of vipers, troopers and henchmen. When this figure came out, I wasn't collecting the Joes as much. As it was I only had a limited amount of figures growing up. A good friend of mine had buckets of figures and I'd go over to his house and play with them. I had a few of my favorites and figures that I got as gifts. I didn't have an allowance or any way to make money and spend it besides what I got at Christmas and Birthdays. By the time I was old enough for that I was buying comics mostly.
So again with the Battleground game, I got the chance to research out this figure more. I was very familiar with the Crimson Guard but not this Guard Commander figure as much. He was very cool to draw, I've always enjoyed that viper/guard helmet in its variety of forms across the line.

Joe-A-Day: Mainframe...
Mainframe, again this was a character I've never drawn before. As it turns out, this was one of my favorite pieces that I did for the GI JOE: Battleground game. Just the action, proportions and over all feel was very "GI JOE" to me.
While I love GI JOE and have since I was a kid, I am by no means an encyclopedia on the property. There are plenty of characters that are still new to me, and I enjoy learning more about as I get the chance to work on the property. Especially while working on GI Joe Battleground I took the chance to research each character a bit as I was working on them. Reading file cards, rewatching Sunbow cartoons that spotlighted them, or finding old comics that they were introduced in all was a great way to get to know what made these characters great Joes!
For Mainframe, I really liked that (as the file card puts it) "He's got brains - but he's hard!" He's a tough dude that went to war, was infantry and experienced in the field. Later went to MIT, worked in computer tech industry then reenlisted with the Marines. He's a tough dude, and someone I'd definitely want on my side. As you get behind the scenes with each of these characters and find out who they are, it all comes to life. It's no wonder this property has so much staying power with fans. There's such a wealth of character and story that can even still be explored!

Joe-A-Day : Tunnel Rat...
Tunnel Rat wasn't a character I was as familiar with before I started working on the GI JOE comic. He was always there in the background for various cartoons or comic issues I had read. But for whatever reason, he flew under my radar. I got to draw the character quite a bit in the first couple arcs of IDW's GI JOE and quickly loved drawing this guy. All of his gear was very different then the other Joes, and whenever you have that kind of variety, I gravitate towards enjoying those characters more.
This was the Tunnel Rat card art I got to do for the GI JOE:Battleground game. I figure with the game no longer creating new content, and recently putting out articles that show the art, it's alright to show a lot of the artwork I did finally.

Joe-A-Day: Airtight...
I'm continuing to try and focus on the more obscure side Joe characters instead of just posting every angle and pose of Snake Eyes and Baroness imaginable. Airtight always cracked me up in the cartoon. If you ever wandered why he wore his helmet so often, his receding hair line could have been the culprit. Hasbro always did a great job making GI JOE characters seem like they could be real people, anyone that you'd meet on the street. Sure some were that square-jawed soldier (Duke and Flint) or near super heroic in their abilities (Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow). But often you had guys that were gloriously average looking 'Joes. Even some with less then average intelligence (Bazooka..sorry big guy).
While it's unusual when I get a requested commission like Airtight, I really enjoy working on them. It's even more enjoyable when I can get Simon Gough, colorist extraordinaire, to take a crack at it!
This one in particular, I knew, needed colored to really pop!

Joe-A-Day: Lamprey...
I promise, it wasn't my intention for that title to rhyme...And to think I just posted a Roadblock piece.
Another piece for the GI JOE Battleground game, I haven't posted many Cobra characters since I started the challenge. This is the Cobra Lamprey, their amphibious assault troopers. They came with the Cobra Moray vehicle. An awesomely sized hydrofoil speed boat. I think the two areas GI JOE excelled at with the toys was developing it's arctic and sea based vehicles and characters. At least they both really stuck with me as a kid. I enjoyed my skystyker the most, but always wished I had a Moray, Whale, USS Flagg! I loved the look of Wet Suit, Torpedo, Deep Six, and the Cobra Eels and this Lamprey trooper. The sea group of characters and vehicles were always right at the tops of my lists of favorites!

Joe-A-Day: Roadblock...
Here was another of the GI JOE Battleground game character drawings. I've always loved drawing this character, and never had much of a chance during my run on the GI JOE book over at IDW Publishing. In the cartoons I get a kick out of his rhyming dialogue and quippy one-liners. It definitely doesn't translate over to the comics, but it made him memorable for me as a kid. Now, drawing him, I really like drawing the over sized guy just blazing away with a .50 cal, a HMG or some kind of chain gun.
This particular Roadblock was the Tiger Force version for the game.
I still haven't done a glorified Roadblock full cover or commission yet, so I'm really looking forward to that when it comes around!
