Joe-A-Day: Snake Eyes...

When I draw GI Joe there seems to be no shortage of Snake Eyes. I know there are many Joe fans that feel like he's used too much, and there is certainly some truth to that. He's a popular character, and it makes business sense to bank on that popularity for toys, comics etc...

This particular Snake Eyes was a lot of fun, and was an illustration for the GI JOE: Battleground game. Some of you might have seen it there. I really enjoyed this one because it gave me a chance to draw the character in an environment specific uniform and gear (a little shout out for the goggles!). Plus I thought it appropriate for this time of year! Not sure what the creepy skull necklace was for though? Anyone with insight into that?

EDIT: Just got the answer! it's Kwinn's necklace from early on in the GI Joe Marvel comics. Snake Eyes ends up with it. Totally blanked on that one, thanks!

The job only required pencils from me, so unlike most of my other posts this illustration/sketch isn't inked. Right now working on America's Army, I don't have an inker on that project either, so this is about how tightly pencilled all my pages are for that book.

Also a quick shout out, Happy Birthday to my awesome big sister Elaine Atkins-Manley! Check out her Facebook page, it's all kinds of comics and pop-culture goodness!

ALL proceeds from prints and sketchbooks will be donated to Toys For Tots this Christmas! We've already got quite a few SALES in, so hopefully this will all add up to a decent donation on Dec 16th!!!

Joe-A-Day: Storm Shadow...

Still getting into he swing of the daily sketch thread. Ha! It doesn't take much to have a busy day and fall behind. So here's the next one up, and I'll post a few to catch up today and tonight so that we're back on track this week.
Thanks everyone for following along and for sharing! So far over $200 has been raised for Toys for Tots through the sketchbook and print sales this month!  Also I wanted to clarify, any colored image on the blog (even archived images from the past few years) can be printed and sold. So if you're going back into previous posts and see an image you'd like or a great gift for someone, I still have time to ship before Christmas and all sales proceeds are being donated!

Joe-A-Day: Scarlett....

This was another commissions I finished while in NY, but only had camera shots of it. Finally have a decent scan to show, this is another being colored up by Simon that I'll be able to show soon and a print available.

I'd love to draw... or even read more stories like this piece represents. Joes out on a mission (singular or with a small team) taking on Cobra troops to achieve an objective. Giving the characters a chance to shine and show their specialties. Generally when given the choice I like to represent this with my commissions instead of just doing a pin up shot.

Joe-A-Day: Covergirl...

Here's our next Joe for the day. Covergirl! I always preferred the blonde hair version of her. This was another sketch done on a blank cover some of you might have seen. But again, this was the first chance I had to get a good scan of it and clean it up. She was the Wolverine tank driver, I especially remember this vehicle as a kid. Unique design, and it just mean that Covergirl meant business driving that thing around!
Image taken from an amazing GI Joe reference sitewww.3DJOES.com

You can read more about Covergirls background and file card at 3d Joes Here:http://www.3djoes.com/cover-girl.html
Check out Carson's site, at 3D Joes he's done full photo turnarounds of the 80's toys, and with very crisp photos of package art and files cards for each character. Very slick site that I use all the time for reference!!

Joe-A-Day: Major Bludd..

This is the first drawing I think I've ever done of a "classic" Major Bludd. I know this isn't his first uniform, and I'm forgetting now which version this was in the toys. If anyone knows, shoot me a message and I'll edit this.

Originally this was done as a design for the GI JOE Battleground game. I ended up editing it, inking it and it was purchased as a commission later. I'd still like to do a definitively classic Bludd, with his 80's Marvel comics uniform and from the original toys. But until then this will have to do. I did get to redesign Bludd for his character in the GI Joe comics in IDW's vol. 1 of the series. There was a great one shot written by Max Brooks about him, worth checking out.

I also just realized there is a great blog called "Joe-A-Day" that spotlights GI Joe toys each day. It's a great site, very well designed and has a lot of features. In the back of my mind I know I must have heard the name, but sincerely wasn't thinking of the blog when I titled my sketch even "Joe-A-Day". So I'm sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes, I think it's a great name for the blog. If I can appropriate it for my event for just a month, I promise I won't besmirch the name. Heck, I'll even give you guys a well deserved shout out. I hope everyone will head over and check out their site!

Joe-A-Day: Snake Eyes Cover homage....

This was a fun cover sketch request at a recent convention. Marvel used to put out these books on a given month with head shots of multiple characters as border around the cover, kind of like a frame. They did this for GI JOE #53, and I remember it had this really cool bust shot of Snake Eyes. As simple as it is, still one of my favorite and memorable Snake Eyes covers.

Recently Marvel put out another blank cover for the Marvel Projects title, but with an updated frame of characters, and a blank surface in the middle. A brilliant idea to allow fans to get a custom cover done just for them, with their favorite character in an homage to the old school covers. So I got the chance to do a classic Snake Eyes like the old GI JOE #53, but a little more in my current style. Very fun to do, and very nostalgic. Man that's what GI JOE is all about for me!

Joe-A-Day: Lowlight...

This is one of the the first sketches I haven't posted on the blog yet, so new GI JOE art! This embodies what I wanted to do with the Joe-A-Day sketch event. Drawing Joe characters that we don't normally get to see, or characters that don't always get the spotlight.
Lowlight here is a fantastic character, one of the GI JOE snipers. I have always liked his design and would love to get the chance to spotlight him in a GI Joe comic someday. He's definitely one of my favorite 3 3/4 figures to have come out in recent years.

Joe-A-Day: Snake Eyes Commando...

Here's a quick post for Saturday's Joe-A-Day sketch. I don't draw this version of Snake Eyes very often. To be honest its not really the one I grew up on or prefer, but He does look very cool nonetheless and I know this version is a favorite of many Snake Eyes fans. So quick head and torso sketch and colors again by Simon Gough!

Joe-A-Day: Snake Eyes Resolute!...

When I initially did this sketch, it automatically felt more animated since I wasn't including all the black shading and rendering on Snake Eyes' uniform. I felt like it was unfinished compared to my traditional Snake Eyes drawing. All the while, I was thinking how great it would be to see this in gray tones or fully colored. This piece was screaming for it!  Simon Gough again tackled the colors and makes a day-time ninja infiltration that much more intense!
A great example of what a colorist ads. It was Simon's choice to make it day time, and it was unexpected for me to see it that way, but I love the backlighting and softness that adds to the piece. A level of stillness and keeping everything easy to see and distinguish.
