Marissa Fairborn and Afterburner...

This was a promo piece done for the Transformers collector's club. It was interesting to see the reactions. From what I know, this character makes a brief appearance in a TF episode set in the near future. With her name, it's suggested that she's the daughter of Lady Jaye and Flint from the GI JOE cartoon, and is the Earth's liaison to the Transformers. I like the idea of a crossover figure like this being made for a collector's club, because it's not something that Hasbro would likely produce. I'd much rather get figures like this from the clubs then repaints of figures already available.

But TF fans didn't see the point of it, and especially with a repainted vehicle that didn't transform. This seemed to me like a better fit for the GI JOE collector's club, since it's a repainted Joe vehicle and the ties of GI Joe characters. Still it was a lot of fun to draw, I liked the character design a lot and I always enjoy drawing vehicles and Transformer (like) material whenever I get the chance.
Here's my process for the job.

NYCC Exclusive GIJOE #1 cover - Scarlett

This was a cool cover to do and has a little story behind it. John Barber the IDW editor working on Hasbro properties emailed me to see if I'd be at NYCC. At first I didn't think so. But a few weeks later, I let him know I was going. He then asked if I'd be able to do a NYCC exclusive cover for GI JOE #1. So if nothing else, I'm glad I was able to make it to the show as it allowed me a chance at this cover.
This issue, does have Scarlett as a main character, but I was allowed a lot of free reign on the cover. It just needed to spotlight her. So I wanted to use a cover layout I had liked and proposed years ago. I think this was one of the suggestions for GI Joe #12 in Volume 1 of the IDW series. I liked the layout, and that story actually had Scarlett in the tunnels underneath the PIT at the time.
It's a bit out of context for the sake of this issue, but we thought NYC sewers are pretty renowned (TMNT) and it worked well enough for a Scarlett centric cover. For me, I just like being able to use an old idea and see it come to fruition finally.

Transformers!

It's been awhile since I posted. Mostly wrapping up a deadline for the America's Army: Officers book I'm working on. That will be out pretty soon, published through IDW!

Also, working the convention circuit has kept me pretty busy. I was at Baltimore Comic Con, and will be at the NY Comic Con next week. Artist Alley table DD05 if you're there, be sure to stop by!

I've posted some of this on Facebook, but I was able to get a few commissions done in recent weeks and I'll be posting those. I also have a few NYCC preorder commissions I want to do this week, that I'll post as well.

First up is this colored version of my Transformers double page commission for Nathan. Joanna Lafuente colored this for me. I'm a huge fan of her work on TF for IDW and she colored the cover to my GI JOE #1 NYCC exclusive as well.

Here's the colored commission!

Transformers: Optimus and Megatron colored - 693

This color print is available for $15 +$5 flat rate domestic shipping. Just email me directly to work out the details.

DFC - Harthank Fourthbrother...

Here's another Dawnforged Cast regular character in their "Beginner's Table" gaming group. For anyone that is new to RPG gaming, and want's to get the experience of table top gaming online, you can check out Monday Night Gaming on Facebook. Andrew will post when they are about to play, and you just have to be one of the first comments and be available at the time with a character ready to play.

You can watch the Beginner's Table videos on YouTube to find out more about this great half-orc character. It's a very cool premise for running a campaign with a rotating group of people for each adventure.

Wonder Worker for DawnForged Cast...

I'll be doing a number of character commissions for Andrew who runs the YouTube channel DawnForgedCast!  He has literally hundreds of videos posted of Dungeons and Dragons style RPG games, tutorials and conversations. The content ranges all over. There is plenty of info for the new beginning player, and all the way up to a seasoned table top gamer.

I started watching his videos a few months ago and have grown to really enjoy how informative and creative the videos are. The production quality is high, and Andrew is very succinct in his descriptions and tutorials.

I personally haven't ever played DnD, but I've certainly been surrounded by it with friends and studio mates. I'd like to play, as I see it as a great way to engage in creative storytelling. I'm fascinated by storytelling, it's a very big part of my daily job as a comic book artist. My problem is I don't have enough friends that are into it locally to start up a group. Maybe eventually. Until then I'm engaged vicariously through Andrew's channel! DFC also offers online gaming group sessions. You can follow the Facebook Page Monday Night Gaming to see when he is hosting new games and information.

I'm excited to work on some Fantasy genre art, it's a nice change of pace from my daily pages of modern military work. I certainly enjoy that as well, but this is a good warm up for me.

This first character is a main figure in Andrew's Beginner's Table games (which is a great example of one of the online gamer groups he does!) This character is the Wonder Worker, he is a gnome and the entrepreneur leading a caravan, that hires out adventuring teams for the basis of the stories. They go to whatever temple ruin, dungeon, forest etc... and find a very specific silver box the he will collect. Each gaming session they go to a new town, and that allows a new set of gamers to be involved each session. It's a rather brilliant plot for bite sized adventures. So here's the line art for the Wonder Worker, we'll have colors and more characters very soon!

America's Army mini-series....

Just wanted to give a quick update for my new current project. I'm penciling a mini-series for the America's Army book being published by IDW Publishing. I'm sure my experience on GI Joe is what put me on a radar for a book like this. It's being written and art directed by Zach Sherman, and he's been a lot of fun to work with.

The stories are based on realistic military setting and operations, even at times based on true events.  With the art, they are very, VERY specific about uniform, weapons, vehicles...well pretty much everything. So I thought GI Joe was detailed and specific....man this is one huge step even more detail specific. But I'm really finding it enjoyable, and I'm learning a lot through the experience. I'll post work as I can. I'm currently drawing pages on issue 1 of a 3 part mini-series. What I can show is this Facebook banner that I did initially for them. I'll see if they'll let me post panel shots here and there, as long as it doesn't give away any story points.

America's Army - 689

You can see info about the America's Army book on their Facebook page here:https://www.facebook.com/AAComics

In preparation for the book I went to a shooting range with my brother-in-law and nephew. I shot about 60-70 rounds from the AR-15 and a few clips from two different handguns. It's a great experience being able to see and feel it first hand. My ears were ringing and I couldn't hear out of my left ear for 2-3 days.

JSA - That's my Jam!

So I'm going to apologize for the title pun right upfront, This was a Jam piece I worked on at Heroes con. This guy who commissions these awesomely HUGE pieces, has had me work on a Teen Titans and a Spiderman one before this. Possibly more. But each of these is larger than a normal sized poster. Each figure standing up like this is over a foot tall. The hardest struggle when working on these is just handling the large piece of paper and getting comfortable drawing with the board so far away and your arm fully extended to work on the head.

The first one I can remember doing for him was the Spider-Man Jam. To solve the size issue, I just put the piece on the floor (on top of some clean cardboard) and drew Venom while I was lying on the ground behind my table. It's something this guy always reminds me of when I talk to him at shows.

So for this JSA piece, I was right after Mike McKone who drew Starman. I drew Wildcat, and you can see that there are a number of other characters ready to be filled in by other artists throughout the show.
