This was a commission way back from NYCC for Damien. He specifically asked for my version or homage to the classic Ed McGuiness Superman cover. Definitely fun to do, and a nice iconic Superman image to draw.

Lt. Falcon - GI JOE...

Here's another Joe sketch from recent commissions. I've only had one opportunity to draw this character before (GI JOE Battleground game) so this was pretty fun whenever to get another crack at it. As much Joe as I've drawn there's still some pretty notable characters I have yet to draw. On my commission list there are still a few others that I'll get to tackle soon!

Deathstroke - Slade Wilson...

Here's another sketch I've worked on recently. An unmasked Deathstroke. This guy is hands down my favorite villain in DC Comics. I just have always liked his fighting style, mercenary attitude and how he's been a Teen Titan antagonist for so long.  I'm glad he's getting so much exposure lately with the Arrow tv show and recent DC animated movies. This is definitely a book I'd love to work on.

Classic Dook!

Another of these GI JOE battleground game art pieces revised for Diana, our resident "all things Duke" art collector. It was great catching up with so many Joe fans and people I know at the recent JoeCon. As always, I wish I had more time to spend socializing at cons. I'm typically busy all night drawing for the show. Still it was fun getting to see so many friends and getting to work on so much Joe art over the weekend! I'll be posting it all up shortly.

Resolute DOOK!

This was initially a sketch for the GI JOE Battleground game that came out a couple years ago. But This version was never made. In the game it became a Sigma Six version of Duke. Diana Davis is a well known GI JOE collector of art, especially when it comes to getting more Duke sketches. 
Like many Joe fans, I absolutely loved the GI JOE Resolute animation and highly suggest it as the best animated GI JOE that's been made. You should definitely check it out if you haven't already. All the short episodes combined it's right about an hour long.
My schedule has abruptly changed as I've taken on a new client. I'll talk about that more as I can, but in general I won't be able to post anything from that client due to non-disclosure agreements. However that new schedule will make it so much easier for me to fit in commissions and creator owned comic side projects. Which means catching up on Kickstarter rewards, Elders of the Runestone issues and CyberPunk Samurai. So be on the look out for more frequent posts, and planning on another Year Long Sketch-A-Day challenge beginning July 7th!

GI JOE Con - Convention Commission Pre-Orders OPEN!!!

GI JOE - JOE CON Pre-order commission list is OPEN!!G.I. Joe Collectors' Club is having their yearly JoeCon in Springfield, IL this April 10th-12th. I will be set up there as a featured guest and I'll have a booth to display my work, sell original art, prints and my art books. I'll be on hand to answer questions, review art portfolios and sign books and merchandise. I am opening my commission list early to allow as many con attendees as possible a chance to get a personal, original commission from me to pick up at the show. I imagine I won't have much time to draw during the show, so this is the best chance to get something from me. 
I'm limiting my sketch options to streamline the process. I've attached examples of what you can expect for your commission. 9x12 inked, full figure - $100The same option and price is available on a blank cover GI JOE comic book. I have two versions (camo border, totally blank with logo). I'll provide the book and you simply pick up at the show.\

Excalibur Nightcrawler...

Nightcrawler is one of my top 3 X-Men characters. I've loved the character's attitude, his development over the years and the over all feel he brings to each team he's been on. A huge part of his character growth was his time as the leader of Excalibur. I wasn't reading that book as it came out in the 80's and 90's but I've since gone back and absolutely love that run with Alan Davis. This costume was a pretty drastic departure from his "classic" look and especially with the buzz cut, man Nightcrawler just looked more serious. 
He had always been a "swashbuckler" type of character, and even referenced it quite a few times how much he enjoyed that type of character and fighting style. Adding a sword to his character was a blast to see, so I definitely had to add that to this sketch. 
Often when I do sketches I use it as an opportunity to try new techniques in inking. New textures, effects, or rendering methods. Here I happened across a new way to indicate black smoke from an Art Adams sketch I had seen and loved that look for Nightcrawler's Bamf effect. It's a bit time consuming, but a fun effect as black and white art.

Grayson, well actually Nightwing in disguise...

This was a commission from my good friend Darrell Taylor (Taylor Network Podcasts) for our friend, writer and author Tom King. He co-writes the comic Grayson for DC Comics. This sketch was a Christmas present for him. I didn't post it earlier because I was still in the middle of my Joe-A-Day sketches.

Dick Grayson/Nightwing is my absolute favorite DC Character! Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the other characters too. Over all I prefer the heroes that don't have massive powers and abilities. They're skilled humans who train, push themselves to the limit for the greater good of others. Batman is a perfect example of this, and I like Batman. But he's almost too good at it. What I liked most about Nightwing is that we've gotten a chance to see him grow as a character and hero. From the first Robin, to Nightwing, and now simply Grayson (secret agent) we've seen him fail and get up, become better, fail and get up, etc... Now that's the kind of stuff I can relate to!

The sketch I did wasn't on a blank cover, I just put the title and names on there as a mock cover to see how it'd look.

Thor from Malta!...

This was a commission I did while I was at the Malta Comic Expo last Nov. Again, finally getting around to cleaning up the scan I had. Man, what an experience that was! Everyone running and helping with that show did an amazing job for a first year con. I've never seen any group roll with the punches, adapt and implement coordination on the fly like they did. Every new show has a few growing pains, and trial and error. I've seen shows deal with it the following year and each year improve, but I've never seen it happen so abruptly day to day.

This sketch was for Andrew, one of the guys who helped me and my wife the most throughout the show. Great guy, and I was glad I got to fit this in while I was there. Another great opportunity at smaller shows is to get to know the other creators set up at the con. I got to meet and genuinely get to know some of my favorite artists like Yanick Paquette and Mahmud Asrar, and either meet or keep in touch with the writers who attended as well. Ron Marz, Mike Costa, Joe Harris and Darren O'Toole. As far as I know the show will be held next year as well, I'm looking forward to going again if at all possible.
