Haq...

There's a couple characters that you begin the story kind of hating...or atleast disliking. Unless you were a total jerk in high school....then maybe you can relate. Still, by incorporating these kinds of characters into our main group, Quinn's done a great job allowing their characters to grow. We often judge each other by what we see or expect from a person. As soon as we get a glimpse into the struggles and obstacles in their lives, we generally understand where they are coming from. Maybe we don't agree with their actions, but you can at least understand it.

Dain, is one of these characters who you wish, could just once, take a huge pan of humble pie to the face. He rules the school and is in the middle of the best 4 years of his life, until the RuneStone...

ELDERS OF THE RUNESTONE

Since his imbued powers can only effect electronics, often Dain feel powerless in a fight in comparison to the other 4. For the "King Jock" of the school, that takes some getting used to...

The focus this week is to spotlight this awesome property I've had a chance to be a part of for years. TOMORROW! We'll be launching a Kickstarter Campaign to help fund the first 4 issue arc. We are well under way with the art, and Quinn has the story written and done (for literally the next 30+ issues). I will post a link as soon as the Kickstarter page is live and you can check out all the great rewards you'll receive for pledging towards the project!

Jenny, a.k.a Hardtap...

I think personality-wise, Jenny is my favorite. She's the girl who walks her own path, unique in how she sees the world and reacts to it. In the high school hierarchy that can make you the object of ridicule though.  Her friendship with Scott is one of my favorite character relationships in the book. It's genuine and quickly shows that Scott is a really decent guy.

Each of the kids receives a power from this mysterious RuneStone. Not to give too much away, but at is very basic description, it allows Jenny to form an interesting forcefield of power around her. As she becomes more familiar with the power, we get to see her abilities grow tremendously! And we all know that with great power... .comes awesome explosions !

Smiley...Also crazy, but in a different way...

Another one of the bad guys for our Elders of the RuneStone Story is this character Smiley. By far one of the creepier characters that I've worked on. He's the leader of a gang of henchmen in Darkhan City, and one of the first major challenges we see our main character's face.

When it came to designing the character, Quinn described his skull like facemask and basically said make him as creepy as you can. Well, we all know how I'm not into creepy, so my first few attempts were considerably lame. Quinn gave me a bit of direction and I did another sketch or two narrowing it down. I set it aside for awhile and worked on other designs. Finally I sat down and did this quick sketch, without trying so hard or thinking about it too much. Sure enough, I nailed it as soon as I turned my brain off and just went to drawing. I then took that initial head sketch and worked out the rest of his body and outfit details. He's visually now one of my favorite reoccuring characters that the main kids have to deal with throughout RuneStone!

Hand...One crazy dude

Hand as a character is the perfect antagonist to Adder, two sides of the same coin. Like most of the characters his design has gone through a few revisions and might go through a few more. He's a great character to draw though, lots of ways to show motion. For a character that will be doing all kinds of crazy martial arts action, it's something I'm really looking forward to working out!

For every action....

There is an equal and opposite Beat Down!  Im pretty sure if the character Adder had a motto...this might be it. Though I might have to confer with RuneStone series writer/creator, Quinn Johnson, just to be sure.

Adder is one of those characters that, as a comic fan, I want to have in my stories. He brings the stoic vigilante action, the grace under pressure, ice in his veins type character....then you realize he just a teenager. And an awkward one at that.  So really how many of us were the most poplular kid in school, captain of the football, basketball, baseball teams? Well, Adder's character is certainly not that kid. Now imagine if you're in his shoes, AND you have the ability to kick the living crud out of 10 guys at once....Im pretty sure I know how I'd vent my high school frustrations. Pummeling criminals.

Kicking off Elders of the RuneStone!

Alright everyone, here we GO!

Elders of the RuneStone is a project I've been working on for years...literally years, with a friend and colleague Quinn Johnson. If you've had the chance to listen to the podcast "Darkhan City Times" (the links are to the left with current episodes), Quinn is my co-host on the show as well.

RuneStone was Quinn's idea, and he's been working on putting this story together LONG before we met in school down at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I remember we were on a car trip together and he told me about his story....for hours. He really had me wanting to know more even after the trip and so we started working together on the project.

Here's the very basic premise:

"What is your purpose?" It's the question Scott, Kat, Dain, and Jenny must ask themselves when their typical teenage lives are thrown into upheaval by a glowing RuneStone that gives them amazing superhuman abilities. Joined by the Adder, a shadowy vigilante with secrets of his own, they must put aside their differences to save Darkhan City from a vicious crime lord with powers far beyond their own.

It's a great mix of an action adventure, horror, superpowered teen drama, and ninjas....because seriously, do you think I'd draw a book without ninjas?

Elders of the RuneStone - Gar - 232

The project itself has had a lot of starts and stops because of my freelance work schedule and ultimately the capital to fund the project. I don't just mean a paycheck for me or Quinn, (that would be the last thing checked on the list)  but more for thing's you never expect starting out. Copyright and trademark fees, paying for production of inking, coloring, lettering and prepress of the comic, not to mention any advertising or marketing plans and costs. Basically it's not something you can put together for free.

So this is where Kickstarter.com comes in!  Quinn and I have put together a campaign that's been approved by Kickstarter as a way to raise funds for the project. It's a fantastic opportunity for you to contribute to the project, but also earn great pledge rewards in return. Rewards range from copies of the book to original artwork, professional writer and artist critiques,  even gift certificates to online comic stores and a 3 month membership here at the Comics Experience!

Our campaign will begin Wed. March 8th! I will post a link here as soon as it launches. Until then I will be doing a countdown of character sketches and production art so you can all be familiar with the look of the book and some of the characters until then.

I'm sure it probably goes without saying, I would appreciate any support you can give to the project and campaign when we launch. Not just in pledges, though that is the goal, but also spreading the word and sharing the campaign on your social network sites like Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus and Deviant art!

We've already had a publisher lined up and ready to get this book out, we just need that last push to get the book finished and in stores!

Thanks again folks!

The new 52...

So I guess it's not so "New" anymore. DC Comics relaunched their line back in Sept 2011. One of the titles I've enjoyed the most has been the new Nightwing. I've drawn him a couple times on the blog already, but not specifically the new costume. This was a sketch done for MegaCon. There were a few sketches I did down there that I forgot to scan, I wish I had images of all of them. I might find them pop up on the internet down the road. If I do I'll share them on the blog.

About a year ago I got a hand held scanner to take with me to conventions for my sketches. It has become invaluable...well as long as I remember to use it.

Flint quick sketch...

When it comes to a GI Joe leading man, I'm with Flint on this one. Duke had his place, and in the cartoon he was really projected as the atypical GI JOE, but I always found Flint to be a more interesting character.

Just a quick headsketch today. I'm going to have some doozies coming up soon. I just need to find a way to work them into my schedule.
