Daily Sketch: Poison Ivy...

Here's another Poison Ivy, I'm still getting used to this costume, but I talked about that already. And getting used to drawing her. This happens with every project. There tends to be a few characters that you nail down the first time and it just is easy to draw them, and then there's the 1-2 characters that takes quite a while to get it right. Still working on her. I like this sketch well enough. It's not the most dynamic, but it is a very cool, straight forward character shot of Ivy.

Daily Sketch: Cyborg...

This was a fun, pretty straight forward, Cyborg sketch for the project. I went back and forth on how "bulky" I made him look. I think this looks a bit too simplified for my tastes. I like his old school look a bit more. Cyborg has such a long history and has been used a number of ways throughout the DC Universe. In recent years he was "promoted" into the regular JLA team and has been featured in a LOT of the DC animation. My kids loved Teen Titans, and now the Teen Titans GO cartoon series. Which that's obviously a much sillier version. However, he's pretty intense in the recent Justice League: War and Throne of Atlantis movies, along with Flashpoint and even Justice League: Doom. For being such a prominent member of the team, I don't find a lot of fan reaction for him, or that he's anyone's favorite character.

If you really dig this character, let me know. Also if there's a definitive run, or story arc that made you really enjoy his character development, I'd like to read that.

Daily Sketch: Green Lantern...

I think I had shown a work in progress when I had wrapped this up on my Facebook, but here's the finished piece. Green Lantern is one of my favorite characters. In fact it was Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis' run on the book after Green Lantern: Rebirth that got me back into all of DC comics. That's still one of my favorite, and in my opinion, one of the most consistently well crafted books in recent years. I stopped reading it around Blackest night, and I haven't read any GL in the new 52, but I'm sure I'll go back and read it in collected trades.

Daily Sketch: Batman...

I know I just posted a bunch of Batman, and here we are again. This time around, I inked all the characters. I think working on the previous Batman sketches helped me out on these. Some characters took me a while to get used to, but I was already warmed up for some Batman sketches!

Daily Sketch: Poison Ivy...

Again from the same JLA line of character sketches. Here's Poison Ivy. I'm personally not as into her new 52 DC Costume, but she is a fun character to draw. It wasn't until I had drawn her a few times that I felt like I had a good look for her.  Also, this was a for a project that they characters are drawn separate from the background, so she's standing on a podium...not doing her best Captain Morgan impression.

Daily Sketch: Catwoman...

So I'm going to launch a big JLA and villain month or so on my blog. Just character sketches. These were for a project, but not sure when it will come out. I had to draw all the characters separately from their backgrounds. I'm not showing anything that would give the story away. Just that the main JLA characters of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Cyborg and Wonderwoman are taking on the Gotham City Sirens of Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.

Sometimes the pose or facial expression might look weird or out of context, but that's just because they are reacting to other things you aren't seeing that were on the page.

Daily Sketch : D&D Tural Lighthammer...

Last summer I tried out playing D&D for the first time! It started because I was looking for something to listen to while I work. I didn't have any new podcasts to start, audio books I was interested in or new music to keep me motivated.

I thought how fun it would be to do some gaming. Friends of mine have done it for years, but I was never available or part of their group and it's a weird thing to ask to join mid-game.
So I went looking online and found that people are playing their games, but also recording them. First I found the PAX: Acquisitions Inc. live plays at the conventions. They have celebrity guests, and it's all very much a game for the crowd to watch and enjoy. Those were fun, and entertaining, but I quickly made my way through those. I then came across Andrew Armstrong's YouTube channel: Dawnforged Cast.  
Here Andrew already had a massive amount of content and especially centered on teaching new players the game and how it's done. I've followed Andrew's videos and have been lucky enough to be a part of 2 campaigns currently! It's been a load of fun, and even in one of my games my brother Brian Atkins is playing. It's a new experience for both of us and really grabbed our imaginations. 
I know D&D has a stigma out there, and it's unfortunate more people won't give it a chance because of that. My wife still rolls her eyes when I say I'm off to play. But I think it's a fantastic chance to work on storytelling and being creative. It's so cool to improvise and playact against others. I'm amazed at how a good Dungeon Master can evoke these grand surroundings and situations through their descriptions and writing. It's just a great creative outlet. 
Also since being a part of the site, I've had a chance to do some artwork for Andrew and in this case one of those following the channel. This was his character, and through a contest on the site, won a chance to get his character drawn by me. So his knight is called Tural Lighthammer. Based on his descriptions, this is what I came up with.

Daily Sketch: GI Joe - Nightcreeper...

This was a commission from a while back when I was finishing doing art on GI Joe Battlegrounds. This sketch was used in the game, but I only had it in pencils at the time. I was asked to ink up a Nightcreeper sketch and this was only needing the inks. 
One downside to having such a busy work schedule is how long my commissions have taken in the past. I'm finished with this sketch and have emailed the buyer, but I've yet to hear back. It's been awhile since we've communicated, so I'm hoping he's still out there and I can get this to him. 
I've got a plan in place with my art rep on how to move forward. I'll be able to guarantee a turnaround time!!! There will be limited spots, but my list will be incredibly more manageable and openings on the list will happen frequently.

Daily Sketch : GI Joe - Leatherneck!

This is only the 3rd time I've drawn this character. Once in the first volume of GI JOE pages, then in this Torpedo/Leatherneck sketch and finally this one.  A commission for my good friend Jason at a recent con. He actually got the Sgt. Slaughter as well that I posted a while back.

I love drawing Joes in action! that always beats the "I'm standing here looking cool" pose that we all see too often in commissions.

For anyone questioning if commissions are getting done, here's absolute proof that progress is being made! I do have some very large commissions. Since they take longer to complete, I will show process shots and occasionally fit in a single character commission like this one in between. But for the most part these will be first come first serve, me working down my list in order. If you have a commission with me, keep an eye out as I plan to have them all done this summer!
