It's Child's Play

Had a bit of a head cold this weekend (which sucked, I'll add) but apparently I'm all better now.

Last week was a very productive week in the Wraithkin universe. Not only did I crank out 17,000 words, I might actually keep about 9,000 of it, which is pretty good for me (yes, new authors… every single word you write is NOT literary gold. Crap, you'll be lucky to find about 50% of it to be worth anything at all…).  I also wrote two reviews (another 2,000 words or so), and blogged here a lot. So ...

Musically Entropic Clown

Music today makes me giggle.

I actually listen to some of the lyrics of today's pop hits because when I'm taking Peggey and Scott's kids to school, it's what they want to listen to. So I'll listen to the latest music and the lyrics and I really can't help but laugh. There's no subtlety and, as a writer, that's one of the keys to being a good fiction writer.

I mean, when you open up a song with "It's Mister Steal Yo Girl", the first thing that comes to my mind for the next verse is "I'm in da...

Nelly… Furtado? Noooooo!

So yesterday I was trying to destroy a world (through the fire and the flames arose a great demon, blue in color of skin and eyes which glowed of gold… ahem, sorry) and I just couldn't find the right mood for it. I shuffled through both Pandora and my own music list before I realized that none of my usual music would cut it.

I guess I'm jaded now, my propensity for destroying worlds something of an expected occurrence in a book. I was frustrated and (I think) Ganesh was laughing at me while I ...

Snuke!

Off to a late start on the blog today, mainly because I've been writing since about 8 AM this morning. It's good to get started early, for me at least.

So I'm pretty sure the publishing world is going to end. One of the stars of the television show "Jersey Shore" (Sooki? Snooki? Something that makes me think of a snuke) published a book and it recently hit the NYT bestseller list. For those of you who don't know what the show is about (like me), I can assure you that after listening to them...

Just One Moment

Mailed out the last copy of Corruptor this morning. I have a few copies left for sale for Mysticon on Feb 25-27 in Roanoke, VA. Details here.

I've noticed an uptick in ebook sales this past week and I'm happy about this. Not because of the book sales (though that makes me very happy indeed) but the fact that people haven't been dissuaded from purchasing the ebook. I was worried with the $6.50 price tag (still cheaper at Fictionwise) people might be turned off of buying it. Especially given...

Red Shirt Birthday!

Today is Joe Buckley's birthday!

Why is that special, you may ask? Well, Joe and I go way back (2002? 2003?) and despite all the times a character named Joe Buckley has died in a book, the original copy of Joe Buckley lives on. And Joe Buckley is to a good book as Ensign Roberts was to a good Star Trek episode. Yes, today I'm going to wax poetic about redshirts.

The classic redshirt was created during the original Star Trek television series, though I'm tempted to suggest it started before...

New Book?

Kind of brain dead this morning. No word about Christian Cole yet, as expected.

Anybody read anything good lately? I noticed that I haven't really picked up anything new recently and, judging from the Amazon reviews of things, I don't want to. There seems to be a dearth of substandard writing out there, which is fine by me. As long as it entertains, I could care less whether or not it's literature. Now, that being said, it should still be legible and coherent.

So, anything good?

Another Mention

Corruptor got another mention at Daniel O. Casey's blog here.

I think he's going to review it. I'd like to hear what someone I've never met before thought of it.

Gone But Not Forgotten… For Now

When I'm in the writing process and have moved beyond the researching part, one of the things I do is bring out my little statue of Ganesh and sit him right at the top of my keyboard. I then taunt him mercilessly, asking him if he would like a peanut (and did he really mean it?). I'm sure almost a billion Hindi across the world would be aghast at my treatment of one of their deities, but Ganesh and I have a history so I'm sure they'll tolerate my insensitivity.

But anyone who comes into my...

Ebooks and the Future

I've been thinking (quick, hide the children!) about the state of publishing and the rise of ebooks a lot lately. I blame Dave Freer and Sarah Hoyt, personally, for my constant watching of the industry. Yes, I am a published author. Yes, my book is out in both print and e-format. But of the two, care to take a guess as to which I'm thrilled about the sales numbers? I'll give you a hint: no trees were harmed in the making of this version.

I remember back in 2004, when I was talking to this...
