Are You Self Defeating?

Agent Lucienne Diver on why writers are sometimes "self-defeating". A great little read, go take a look.

Mysticon 2011 AAR

First off, thanks to the staff and volunteers of Mysticon. It was a very well-run con and I for one look forward to attending next year. Lots of great guests and good panels.

We arrived around 4:30 on Friday afternoon, a little early because I didn't want to be late for opening ceremonies. Got checked in fairly quickly, though volunteers kept jumping in front of us to ask questions while we were talking to the guest liaison about Mel's badge. Eventually got everything sorted out, walked off...

Gone POOF

That sound you just heard? That's the sound of a thousand voices, screaming as one in horror as I descend upon their unwary city, bringing pestilence and despair. It's con weekend!

Yeah, have a good weekend everyone!

Mysticon Tomorrow

Wow it's cold in my room this morning.

Tomorrow is Mysticon, which is going to be a lot of fun. I'll get to talk about both my book and my short stories for the upcoming anthologies Lawyers in Hell and Adventurers in Hell. I may even get invited into the following one, Engineers in Hell. Not sure yet.

But I'm doing a little research on my panel topics so that way those who dare attend a panel with me on it will not be struck at how ignorant I am about the topic at hand. One of the first things ...

I'm Old, Really

This morning I was finishing up …AND INJUSTICE FOR ALL when the phone in the rec room rang. I usually don't answer it, but the last time I did that it turned out to be the school letting me know that one of the kids I'm on the emergency call list for (Ellie) was sick and they couldn't reach her parents. So I figured this time I'd answer.

"Hello?"

"Hi," a cheery voice greeted me. "Is Mr. or Mrs. Rowland home?"

"Uh, no," I respond, my brain already flitting back to the short story. "Nobody's home ...

Cease and Desist

I had a brief moment of "Uh oh" this afternoon when I went out to check the mail.

I noticed what appeared to be an official looking large envelope from Pyr Books crammed into the mailbox. I handled it with some caution because I have heard stories about "official looking envelopes" and the havoc they bring upon the hapless recipient. Such phrases like "lawsuits" and "cease & desist" went through my head and for a moment, I wondered just how cheap airfare was to Canada and if I really needed a ...

Deadlines Go By

Four days and counting until Mysticon. Come down to Roanoke if you'd like to purchase an autograph copy of my book and meet more famous authors than myself. It'll be a blast!

The cold, harsh reality of the dreaded "deadline" is looming up on the horizon. I can feel its icy tendrils grasping at my loins at this moment, making me squirm uncomfortably as I try to finish much before March. Naturally, that means I'm going to have some other project rear its ugly head and scream "Hey, bozo! Write...

…and nothing else matters…

Countdown: 5 days until Mysticon, which I am very excited to be a participant at. I haven't been to a con in quite a while now, and I need a con fix. As I mentioned previously, I have posted my schedule (so far as I know it) and am eagerly awaiting a few of said panels. I don't know how much I'll have prepared, but when I wing stuff it usually is entertaining at least. I'm also looking forward to meeting Catherine Asaro, she of The Ruby Dice fame. We don't have a lot in common (other than...

The Windy Plains of Knowitallville

It's a windy day up at Soldier's Retreat today, with gusts up to 35+ mph. It's really cool to watch the flag whip around in the wind, as well as the windsock down on the runway stand nearly straight out.

In the Lawyers in Hell group, we were talking about surroundings and how to use them properly in your story the other night. I was thinking to myself "I do this kind of stuff already" until I realized that I actually needed to tone it back a little bit. After all, what other way can an author ...

Borders and Realities

I'm sad that Borders has filed for bankruptcy, though I am also relieved that my royalties will be unaffected (neither Borders nor B&N carried Corruptor) by the turmoil.

But yeah, I shouldn't be directly affected by the bankruptcy, if anybody was wondering. Those whose books were in their stores before the bankruptcy filing, however, could be royally screwed. Royalties and payments to publishers could be tied up in the courts forever, and that is a bad thing for small press publishers who...
