200cc's of Espresso, Stat!

Officially back to work today.

Received two more books for the review pile over at Shiny Book Review. The first one, Stuff Christians Like, is highly amusing so far. The other, Kristine Kathryn Rusch's advanced reader copy of City of Ruins, has been read already and is about to be reviewed. Look for it sometime in May.

I think I mentioned it before, but I signed the contract for my short story And Injustice For All last weekend with Paradise Publishing. This means that I can't review their...

Buzzwordiness

Thought I was done with all my work today before I realized I hadn't updated here. Ah, the life of a writer who also runs five websites for friends (for free, I'll add).

Gotta admit, finding work is hard today. So the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, who is seeking a very odd individual to be an investigative journalist, just posted this ad. Here it is below, in all its glory:

If you're the type of sicko who likes holing up in a tiny, closed office with reporters of questionable hygiene to build...

Another Boring Update

Well, I no longer feel as though I've been flattened by a truck. This is a good thing.

Just got my invite back to Mysticon for 2012. The invites are going out this weekend. Apparently I jumped the gun when I emailed my contact person last night asking about it. Ah well, now I know. The nice thing is, I'll have more publishing credits to my name by next year. Yes, I'll update my "Appearances" page accordingly.

Though it's not book related, I'll also be at the Bluegrass Morgan Show in Lexington, ...

No Intelligence Here, Move Along Please

Amazing how you can come back from vacation exhausted.

I'm still not "at my desk" but I have internet access (yay!) for the time being. Kentucky was gorgeous and my hosts were gracious people. They let me ride a horse that costs more than all of the cars I have owned combined. I was far more nervous about breaking the horse than I was about breaking myself.

Signed the contract for Lawyers in Hell and am very happy with it. It was a lot shorter and simpler than my old contracts have been (my...

Nuclear Questions?

For those of you who have been following the Japan nuclear situation, here is an excellent page hosted by MIT's Nuclear Science and Engineering. This should answer any questions you have, as well as get you past the media hype and doomsday speak.

Media Blows Hot Radioactive Air, Reactor Ignores It

The mass media is doing everything in its power right now to cause a panic regarding the Fukushima reactor plant.

Really.

Think about this for a moment. The reactor not only withstood a 9.0 earthquake, but a tsunami as well, and all that has happened is that the building has been damaged. The protective concrete barrier has not been breached, not has the inner reactor core been that badly damaged. The problem is that the water isn't cooling, creating steam, which has been released into the...

A Snippet

Couldn't think of anything to write today so instead decided to post the opening snippet from my short story "And Injustice For All" from the forthcoming "Lawyers in Hell" (Janet Morris, July 2011), the first of the upcoming new anthologies in the Heroes in Hell series. Enjoy.

"I've had it!" Marie Antoinette screeched as soon as she was inside the dilapidated apartment. She stamped a petite foot onto the ruined carpet and glared furiously at the miniature head perched carefully upon the d...

No Meltdown Here

I had a long post about the tsunami and earthquake in Japan all prepped and my computer ate it.

Yum, apparently.

So instead I'm posting a link to a site with very good information about the Fukushima Nuclear Plant and what is going on at the moment.

Bottom line: they're not having a meltdown yet. They shouldn't, either. And 1,000 times normal radiation that was detected is a little more than the average person receives while flying from Tokyo to Los Angeles.

Think about that the next time you...

Tsunami

(imaged borrowed from the Associated Press, copyright 2011 APNews)

It hurts to type right now. I have an infected hangnail on my ring finger, so this'll be brief.

Bad news from Japan: an 8.9 earthquake struck there this morning (well, morning for me). That killed some people and caused massive property damage. But as usual, it was the follow-up which caused the most loss of life. A tsunami washed ashore, killing reportedly hundreds. Now, this isn't nearly as bad as what happened back in the...
