One Good Thing

One good thing...Hmmm. It's been a pretty dull day. I shoulda been writing but I'm one of those lazy writers. Not like Rick Reed or Stephen King who can sit for hours. I can't stay seated anywhere for hours.

One Good thing...

Got it!

SIMPLE MEN was reviewed HERE today and I've enjoyed reading the comments from readers. It was a nice review. They weren't ecstatic about the book, but I'll take it. It's a well-written review, and the points are well-made. The comments, though, had me smiling. Espec...

One Good Thing

I must admit something. I'm an addict. I'm addicted to music. I have it on all the time. If I could have it piped in through my veins I would. It's a sad reality, though - a mean joke by the universe, really - that I can't play an instrument or sing to save my life. Anyway, today I got three new CDs: Sarah McLachlan's "Laws of Illusion", Laura Marling's "I Speak Because I Can", and the John Prine tribute "Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows" which boasts versions of Prine's songs by the likes of Jo...

10 Books That Disappointed Me, Bored Me, Or I Just Plain Hated

These are the books that I just didn't "get." Some of them are considered classics, but I guess I'm too dumb to get the point. I doubt it, though. They're probably just crap. I only pick on well-known books or books from big publishers. It's no fun to pick on the smaller presses and writers who struggle enough as is.

"300" by Lynn Varley & Frank Miller. It may be real purty to look it, but I found it emotionless and, yes, a strange mixture of homoeroticism (yay) and homophobia (boo).

"The Autum...

One Good Thing

I dipped my hand into the Naughty Jar today and pulled out a few fig newtons. Oh, how I love them! Ever since I was a kid I've had the lust for the newton. Instead of chocolate bars I would get fig newtons. Eating them today was so nostalgic. Not just a good thing, but a DELICIOUS thing.

One Good Thing

AMC aired John Ford's last film, 1966's 7 WOMEN, today. It stars Anne Bancroft, Sue Lyon, and Margaret Leighton among others, as a group of women who live in a mission in 1935 China. The film is widely regarded as one of those forgotten classics that never got its fair shake in its day. "Sight & Sound" even cited it as one of the 100 Greatest Films of the century. (But then, "Sight & Sound" has always come off, at least to me, as a pretentious ass-sniffer of a publication.) I won't go as far ...

One Good Thing

The hostas are in bloom. They surround the front porch and have stalks of beautiful violet flowers. I sat in the rocker today. It's near the edge of the porch. The stalks sometimes touch one of the rocker's arm rests. With flowers, of course, you get bees. Big, juicy bumble bees. As a child I would avoid flowers in fear of being stung. But as I sat in the rocker and 5 or 6 bees buzzed around me, it didn't bother me at all. I knew as long as I didn't impede on their mission I would not be stun...
