Hot Shot: Helloooo, Charlie!

I actually know today's Hot Shot. Charlie David is one of the nicest guys I've ever met in the entertainment world. Writer, actor, producer, adventurer. If he looks familiar, you've probably seen him in "Dante's Cove", "Bump!", or films like "Mulligans" (which is based on his own book). He's quite the renaissance man. (I'm going to try and get him interested in my own Jasper Lane books, Subsurdity and Suburbilicious. I think he would make a good Rick.) There are naughtier pics of Charlie out ...

One Good Thing

I was outside earlier, admiring the day and this great weather, when a big beautiful butterfly flitted past me over the flowers. It's been flying around for the past few days, and is notable because normally the butterflies around here are smaller and either white or a woody brown. This fella had massive wings, black and violet. Stunning. He's like the glam rockstar of butterflies. He's Ziggy Stardust.

One Good Thing

If you've never heard of William Elliott Whitmore go check him out this minute...or soon after. The song "Old Devils" has been in my head all day since hearing it this morning and I don't mind one bit. He's got this deep soulful voice and penetrating lyrics. It's hard to say where exactly his music would end up if you tried to categorize it. There's folk, blues, and country all mixed up in there somewhere, but he's a very unique sound. I'll be getting one or two of his CDs. Count on it.

10 Great Short Stories

Short stories are a hard thing to manage. A writer has to define plot, setting, and character in a much more confined space than when writing a novel. There are people who don't like short stories because of this. There are others who ONLY read shorts. I don't write many of them. Of those I have, my favorite of my own work is "Books by Covers" from my anthology Slight Details & Random Events. Here are TEN of my favorite short pieces by other writers in alphabetical order, the ones that stuck ...

One Good Thing

Last week I told you all I purchased the new John Prine tribute Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows along with Sarah McLachlan's and Laura Marling's newest CDs. Surprisingly, the John Prine tribute is my favorite so far. I know that's a bit unfair since the songs are already proven gems ("Angel From Montgomery" anyone?), but I was listening to the CD this morning while I got my workout on, and I love the variety of different voices singing. The stand-outs thus far: Conor Oberst singing "Wedding Day...
