10 Songs About Pirates

Or close to pirates. Some of these aren't specifically about pirates but I they could be.

"Captain Badass" by Songs:Ohia (I tried to get people to start calling me this - it didn't take)

"The End of My Pirate Days" by Mary Chapin Carpenter

"He's a Pirate" by Klaus Badelt

"The Hook" by Stephen Malkmus (if there's one song on this list you must hear, it's this one, you scallywags)

"National Talk Like a Pirate Day" by Lambchop

"Pirate Jenny" by Nina Simone

"The Privateers" by Andrew Bird

Cabaret Life: Ice Age 2

I don't watch a lot of animated films, but I love this scene from "Ice Age 2." Those pesky buzzards and their Broadway showtunes!

One Good Thing

Had a visit from my friend Cliff today as he drove back down from Canada. I was supposed to go with him, but had passport problems. It was wonderful to see him - in person rather than on-line. He's such a sweetheart. We sat on the front porch and talked and then took a walk through the HC campus. He with a lot of patience, me with my cane. I was so grateful today wasn't as soaked with humidity as the past week. I would have died of heat stroke. Swooned and died right there on campus. Maybe th...

Cabaret Life: The Fifth Element

From one of the strangest films ever made of the big budget variety. The Diva Scene, as it's known. A scene that totally caught me off-guard when I first saw the film, and made up for the annoying Chris Rock character. I love the way it's edited together, the techno bit on stage and the action in the hotel room. The costumes by Gaultier (I believe) should have been Oscar-nominated at least. They're amazing. Some of the most original stuff since the first "Star Wars."

One Good Thing

Had me one of those new McDonald's fruit smoothies today...and last night. Deeelicious! The Wild Strawberry is so refreshing. It might be the best smoothie I've had in a while. I had one the other day at a cafe downtown (no, I won't tell you which one) but it wasn't as good. It's been so hot lately I've been absorbing cold liquids like I was 90 percent water or something. I don't mean to plug a company that doesn't need my plug, but those smoothies are fantastic.

Hot Shot: Maps

I know some people are turned off by the vascular look, but I dig it. This guy, with those awesome legs and the way he's barely keeping his package wrapped, makes me swoon...
