Top 10 Stargate Episodes for the Neophyte Gater!

During yesterday’s Dark Matter Monday panel (check it out here) Meteorologist Katie mentioned she’d been meaning to check out Stargate, but wasn’t sure where to start.  Of course, the prospect of watching 350+ episodes of sci-fi television can be foreboding for the non-gating neophyte.  While it would be logical to start at the beginning with Children of the Gods, I’d argue that SG-1’s first season is drastically different from its last both in terms of narrative and tone.  Atlantis is more updated but still steeped in the mythology established by SG-1.  Universe is newer still yet, clearly, a tonal shift from the preceding two shows.  Ultimately, each series offers something different and liking or disliking one does not necessarily mean you will like or dislike the others.

So where to start if you’re new to the franchise and uncertain about wading through all 17 seasons of television?  Well, after giving it some thought, I’ve put together this handy list of The Top 10 Stargate Episodes for first-time Gater.  Ten episodes not overly encumbered by past storylines or show mythology that work well as stand-alone examples of the very best this franchise had to offer over its fifteen year run.

Presented in the order in which they aired.  Two-parters counted as two episodes.

Screen-shot-2021-02-23-at-61655-pm

#10. The Fifth Race (Stargate: SG-1, Season 2 Episode 16)

Colonel Jack O’Neil encounters a mysterious device that downloads a repository of alien data into his brain.  As Jack starts to lose himself, his teammates scramble to recover the vast storehouse of information he holds – and save his life.

1-46

#9. Window of Opportunity

Jack O’Neil and Teal’c find themselves trapped in a time loop following a visit to an alien world.

1-45

#8-#7. Heroes I and II

An off-world excursion results in a tragic loss, and a powerful reminder of the risks and sacrifices inherent in every away mission.

Screen-shot-2021-02-23-at-61307-pm

#6-#5. The Storm/The Eye

Atlantis is infiltrated by an enemy strike force during a massive storm.

1-44

#4. Michael

What secret lies behind Lt. Michael Kenmore?  Why can’t he remember his past, and why are some of his fellow Atlantis denizens so openly hostile to him?  The answer proves as shocking as it does horrific.

1-43

#3. The Shrine

Dr. Rodney McKay falls victim to a disease that slowly erodes his mental capacities, gradually rendering him to a childlike state.  His only hope lies in a purported cure located within a heavily-guarded alien outpost.

1-42

#2. Time

While exploring an alien world, the crew discovers a recording of their first visit to the planet – one they don’t remember making.

Screen-shot-2021-02-23-at-60944-pm

#1. Twin Destinies

Eli’s plan to use the power of a star to dial Earth is opposed by a time-hopping Dr. Rush.

Honorable Mentions.  These are fun, stand-alone episodes – perfect for the first-time viewer:

SG-1: Upgrades, Point of No Return, The Curse, Wormhole X-Treme, Revisions, The Ties That Bind, Collateral Damage, Family Ties

Atlantis: Harmony, The Last Man, Remnants

Universe: Malice

So, which episodes would you recommend to a Stargate newbie?

In case you missed it, Stargate fans, David Read and I discuss SG-1’s seventh season…

Today, I recorded the first episode of the Gaters Gonna Rate podcast for The Companion – and it included a super special guest I haven’t seen in ages!

Other than that, I’ve spent the entirety of the rest of the day entering, re-entering, and changing passwords and varied verification codes in an ultimately futile attempt to transfer the entire contents of my old mac book to my new mac book.  I am exhausted and the only thing keeping me from hurling my new mac off the balcony is Akemi – and the fact that the recent snowfall would undoubtedly cushion the fall.

February 21, 2021: Suji Sunday!

Screen-shot-2021-02-21-at-31838-pm

Confrontational.

Spelunking…

On especially cold days, we substitute our regular afternoon walks for a carpet run.  Less sniffing and meandering, but a lot more traction and zipping around…

And a classic Suji video guest-starring one of the few dogs she ever got along with – Lulu…

February 20, 2020: Science and Sakura!

Some science news of note…

Touchdown for Perseverance!

Popeye was clearly on to something.  Eating spinach could protect astronauts from space radiation.

Why so many people hate cheese.  What do you say?  Yay or Nay?  And, if yay, what are some of your favorites?

Coffee drinkers, rejoice!  5 reasons your morning coffee is good for you.

I’m a big fan of the runny cheeses.

You know we’re nearing cherry blossom season when…

Grandma’s Top 5 Worst Treats!

My father’s mother lived to the ripe old age of 112.  She attributed her long lifespan to a diet consisting of little meat, a lot of greens, no black pepper, and a glass of red wine every day.  She was, like most Italians, decidedly fiery.  When her young daughter (my aunt) wandered into the boys’ schoolyard one day in search of her brother (my father) and ended up being spanked by the monitor nun for this transgression, my outraged grandmother visited the school to deliver a beatdown of her down.  She was turned away and responded by pulling her kids out of school, renouncing her Catholic faith, and converting to Protestantism (and then, for good measure, chased the apologetic priest off her stoop with a broom).  Grandma Mallozzi was very memorable.  The treats she would serve my sister and I on our weekly visits less so.  These were Grandma’s Top 5 Worst Treats – all washed down with the ubiquitous glass of cream soda…

1-37

#5. Wagon Wheels

I remember eyeing one of these magnificent-looking chocolate-covered treats for the first time, then biting into it to discover the chocolate was just a thin veneer disguising unremarkable cookies which, in turns, hid an awful marshmallow center.

1-38

#4. Fig Newtons

I can only assume that, in her own small way, my grandmother was looking to serve us a marginally healthy alternative.  While I can appreciate the effort now, six year old me would have much preferred a chocolatey nut center.

1

#3. Fruit Creme Cookies

Of all the filled cookie options available, why would anyone choose these?

1-39

#2. Fruit Jellies

Gah!  My teeth ache just thinking about them.

1-40

#1. All Sorts

If you hate kids, this is the perfect candy to give them.  A plethora of choices, every single one of them awful.

Honorable Mention…

1-41

Raisinets

Close enough in appearance that they can be mistaken for chocolate covered almonds.  Instead, the chocolate serves as a stealth delivery system for the Devil’s candy.

In the event you missed yesterday’s Dark Matter discussion, here’s what we had to say about Episode 206, “We Should Have Seen This Coming”…

Some news of note…

Screen-shot-2021-02-16-at-42856-pm

3D Print Your Own Home!

“Andersen said the actual printing time for the walls took about 48 hours, part of an overall eight-day process to build the entire home.

That is significantly faster and around 30% cheaper overall than a home built using standard construction methods, he said, where laborers need to tow in and stack blocks manually.”

Screen-shot-2021-02-16-at-43058-pm

How to Escape the Confines of Time and Space According to the C.I.A.

“2017 – The CIA declassifies 12 million pages of records revealing previously unknown details about the program, which would eventually become known as Project Stargate.”

Who’d have thought that we were actually producing a documentary for all those years!

Billionaires See VR as a Way to Avoid Radical Social Change

“But Carmack’s solution is to create a virtual world where people can escape. It’s a promise of the future where the living conditions are still cramped but people have accepted their material conditions and retreated into a fantasy world created by the tech companies.”

I feel like I’ve already seen this episode.

Development of an A.I. technology able to “Read Emotions” across entire cities to Stop Crime Before It Happens.

And have definitely seen this movie.

Finalweb-12221

Insect Brains Will Teach Us How To Make Truly Intelligence Robots

“Systems like this, where their brain circuits have been reverse-engineered from nature, should give highly efficient and robust algorithms for navigating the real world. And robots utilising them would benefit from hundreds of millions of years of evolution. The next wave in AI progress may just be within reach.

Using my dog’s neural template, on the other hand, would yield a dumb but absolutely adorable robot.
