March 2, 2021: The Tuesday Report!
In case you missed it, here’s yesterday’s Dark Matter Monday broadcast wherein we discussed Episode 208 (Stuff To Steal, People To Kill) with VFX Supervisor Lawren Bancroft-Wilson. He offers interesting insights on the show’s visual effects, their progression throughout the show’s run, as well as a few behind the scenes anecdotes . Actress Torri Higginson also drops by for a quick hello. Check it out…
Came across the following article today warning of the dangers of flea collars. The EPA apparently can’t be bothered to warn consumers, so spread the word…
Popular flea collar linked to almost 1,700 pet deaths. The EPA has issued no warning. https://t.co/h1Y2Je2qtq via @usatoday

To those asking, my mother received her Pfizer vaccine yesterday. In terms of adverse reactions, she apparently napped twice during the day and her arm hurt all night. Your mileage may vary.

I am…curious.
Got an email from a production company interested in that small town horror pilot. The script has always gotten a lot of love, but it’s yet to get that elusive green light. Maybe a shift in creative direction is in order. Tara and I are discussing leaning more into the horror elements. All that’s required is for us to rethink our approach the first season. Easy!
Tammy, thanks for the brownie recipe (It’s in yesterday’s comments section for those on the look-out). It’s been ages since I’ve baked and these may be just the thing to get me back in the saddle.
Finally, today’s blog entry is dedicated to Drea who has offered an update on her present situation. Sending positive thoughts her way.

It combines one of the things I love most with one of the things I hate most. I am conflicted.
To those wondering, I’m the kid with the blue jacket, second from left in the back row. My sister, Andria, is the one holding our poodle, Snoopy (who now looks a lot bigger in the photo than I remember him growing up). Congratulations to all those who guessed correctly.
I am in the process of reviewing every Kpop song released in February in preparation for my Top 10 duel with the amazing and knowledgeable Carolyn Hinds. Our rankings go head to head and fans will decide which one of us got it (more) right!

February 28 2021: Suji Sunday and Remembering Petunia!
Received word late yesterday that our old friend Petunia had crossed that rainbow bridge. Those of you who have frequented this blog for a while no doubt remember Tuna, or Toons as I liked to call her. She would often stay at our Vancouver home when her mom (Sarah) and dad (Tio) were out of town. At first, she seemed a little leery about the whole arrangement but, on her third visit, she just settled and quickly became a part of the old gang.
She was an incredibly sweet dog who loved to lounge and whose forehead, mysteriously, always smelled like lavender and baby powder.
She will be missed.

February 27, 2021: The Saturday Report!
Check out this old timey pic of yours truly, my sis, aunt, uncle, and cousins. Pick me out of a lineup to win my undying admiration!
Back on the hometown front, mom is making her famed pickled eggplant – and undoubtedly looking forward to Monday when she finally receives her first vaccine. Canada is a little behind their southern neighbor on that front. Whereas the U.S. is vaccinating 1.4 million a day and aiming to have 150 million vaccinated by end of March, Canada has proven…somewhat of a laggard. According to the latest Global Vaccine Tracker stats, in the United States 14.6% of the population have received at least 1 shot (compared to 2.4% for Canada), and 7.1% have been fully vaccinated (compared to Canada’s 1.4%). Israel, meanwhile, is well out in front, having already vaccinated 36.6% of its population.

February 26, 2021: Projects on deck!
Well, the weekend is upon us – provided, of course, you still adhere to Old Time and continue to recognize the weekend as a thing.
The TimEscape package (bible and two scripts) have gone out to about a dozen potential buyers – for starters. Two quick passes so far. The first, not surprisingly, from a place that, uh, already has a major sci-fi franchise on rotation. The other, a place I could never really figure out in terms of their branding and overall direction – so not all that surprising.
Meanwhile, the other sci-fi project is poised to follow. At the moment, we are just generating a list of possible homes.
The initial response to the Project F series overview and first draft script has been great. Next week, a new executive joins the creative mix and I look forward to hearing his thoughts. He’s a genre guy, which is great, not sure his expertise and preferences extends to sci-fi/gaming/k-pop hybrid shows. We’ll find out Thursday!
Shout out to Ella Myers of No Equal Entertainment who took the written series overview and transformed it into a positively gorgeous and compelling pitch deck.
Forwarded my two horror features to my agent earlier this week. As a rule of thumb: the longer the turnaround response, the more negative the feedback. The clock is ticking!
Finally heard back from the streamer re: the small town horror series. It was a pass, but the form response did, kindly, wish us luck on our future endeavors. I draw solace from the fact that they did take the extra effort of letting us know rather than simply not responding and assuming we’d figure it out (which is the norm).
A couple of comic-to-television adaptations in a holding pattern.
A near-future tech-driven murder mystery pilot on deck.
And a comedy procedural.
It seems like a lot but, truly, much of my days are now spent studying the stock market. I’m enjoying the minutiae of tracking data, trends, and indicators. My years of obsessing over Fantasy Football stats have apparently served me well!

February 25, 2021: Japanese Customer Service! And Name That Stargate Episode!
Sometimes I suspect that the new Farm Boy grocery opening up two blocks from our place is the greatest thing to happen to my wife since her move here from Japan. It’s always Farm Boy this, Farm Boy that. Farm Boy, Farm boy, Farm Boy.
Apparently, it reminds Akemi of the grocery store she grew up frequenting near her family home in Osaka. Her mother was a longtime regular. One day, when the shop called to inform her mother that she had forgotten her shopping wallet (Apparently it’s a thing in Japan), Akemi’s mom simply placed an order for delivery and had them take the payment from the wallet. Although the shop was within convenient walking distance, it was even more convenient to leave the wallet at the store, then simply order by phone, have them physically draw the payment, and take delivery. This went on for weeks until the day the shop informed her that her wallet was empty. So her mom returned to the store – not to finally pick up her wallet, but to replenish it so she could continue the convenient arrangement. Akemi even recalled times when her mother would phone to place her order and inform the shop owner what she’d be preparing for dinner that day – and the owner would go the extra step of prepping the purchases (peeling, chopping, grating, etc.) before sending her way.
This first happened about twenty years ago.
And the shop still has the wallet.
Ah, I miss Japan.
Check out the Stargate: SG-1 concept art. Then, name the episode!
