April 13, 2021: Oops, almost forgot!

Whew!  Almost forgot to blog!

I predict that, by the end of this pandemic, Toronto's downtown core will be made up entirely of new condo developments and cannabis shops.

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) April 13, 2021

I mean, it’s kind of crazy.  Every week, a small business shuts down and, every week, a new cannabis shop opens up.  Or I see an announcement of a new condo development.  It’s kind of depressing.

In the unlikely case you missed it, check out yesterday’s Dark Matter Monday discussion with actor Jeff Teravainen (Lt. John Anders!):

Today’s Yes/No…

Not here but if I were in Japan, I’d try it.  One of the most delicious drinks I had on my last drink was a Matcha-Pistachio Latte from Dean & DeLuca.  Man, I miss Tokyo.

Hey, is it just me or has the default writing on browsers and emails suddenly gotten smaller?  It’s NOT just me, right?

Also, has the threshold for what’s funny be dramatically lowered?  I’m watching twitter blow up with “hilarious” video clip that lead me to assume people are really desperate for humor.  I mean REALLY desperate.

Okay!  I have finally locked down my three pitches for next week’s zoom meeting.  I just need to flesh out and write up the third one tomorrow and, once that’s done, it’ll be smooooth sailing.  Now aside from the Powder Mage pitch scheduled for Friday, my week is free and clear – which means I’ll be spending that time working on my second draft of the Project F pilot.  I’ve got to come up with a multi-person puzzle.  I hate puzzles!

Thanks for the reminder, friendo!

Success!  I woke up early this morning (because I couldn’t sleep) and completed the second of my three pitches for next week.  One more brilliant idea to go.

Meanwhile, I’m progressing on the second draft of the Project F pilot and I am concerned that I am alternately changing too much and too little.  The entire first act has been excised, much of the fifth act rewritten, a completely new technology introduced and layered through the script, and two additional surprising untimely demises added – BUT acts two, three, and four remain more or less unchanged.  Once I’ve completed this pass, I’ll certainly review for more character moment opportunities, but I’m really loving the existing character dynamics and dialogue.

Meanwhile, incredibly disappointed TimEscape found no traction at the various places the package was sent.  I can only assume they didn’t bother reading before passing.  But maybe there’s a play to be made in the international market.  Taking a page out of the Dark Matter playbook, we secure an international sale and then nail down a Canadian broadcaster which will hopefully make it easier to close that U.S. sale as it will be an inexpensive acquisition as opposed to an expensive original.  The hardest part of all this, it would seem, is to get people to respond to emails.

Today’s Yes/No…

April 10, 2021: How goes your Saturday?

The more you know…

I heard the monkey was offered his own spinoff after the first season, left the show to do it, only for it to be cancelled before the pilot ever aired. Most of his planned story arc for Friends' second season was given to the Joey character.

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) April 10, 2021

Thanks for the updates on your respective vaccine experiences.  Here in Toronto, I heard word that we’d have to wait until July for our first shot.  Then I heard that my age group would be eligible for the Astrazeneca.  Then I heard my hot zone area code would be eligible for either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine soonish.  I also heard they were working on a Galaxy Quest series.  But, sadly, none of the aforementioned have come to fruition.

Today, I managed to send out some long overdue script notes, did some market research (ESNT, FL, LMT, MRU, and VALE looking bullish to me!), and reviewed the first 25 pages of my revised Project F pilot.  I shaved a page off the tease, lost the first act entirely, introduced a new music-related piece of technology, moved Berniece’s intro into Act 2, and tweaked Kuro-K53’s explosive demise.  On to Act 2!  Oh, and I also came up with a second premise for my upcoming Week of April 18th pitch session.  Two(ish) down; one to go.

Today’s Yes/No…

Hummus Shake? Yes/No

April 9, 2021: Work, vaccines, fried chicken breakfast sandwiches, and Stargate!

And another weekend is upon us…which, frankly, won’t feel all that different from Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday.  I’ll be continuing my rewrite of the Project F pilot (Tease and Act 1 complete), reviewing my Powder Mage pitch, working on six new pitches for two possible homes, and finally getting around to reading and providing notes on those scripts (Apologies for the delay, gang!).  I try to keep on top of everything by constantly checking my google calendar and noticed I have a webinar scheduled for Sunday at 7:00 p.m.  Webinar???

So, how are you all doing?  Vaccinated?  Getting vaccinated?  If you have been vaccinated, which vaccine and how was the experience?  Do tell.

Today’s Yes/No…

Top 10 Kpop Tracks of March, 2021

10. What Type of X – Jessi

Easily my favorite song by Jessi.

9. Flower Less – DKB

A fairly young group with a lot of promise.

8. Do or Not – Pentagon

This one with the classic kpop boy band feel.

7. Lilac – IU

IU’s first appearance on this list, but not her last.

6. Hwa-byung – MC Mong

An underappreciated artist. The track Blind, also on this album, is great as well.

5. Blood Night – G-reyish

Big thematic shift for this band, but I like it!

4. On the Ground – Rosé

Rosé finally gets her solo debut, and doesn’t disappoint. Best Blackpink(related) song in years.

3. Stalker – 3YE

Their best song to date.

2. My Sea – IU

Whoa! The pipes on full glorious display here!

1. Ah Puh – IU

Such a solid album. Two other tracks, Coin and Flu, just finished out of the Top 10.

Over on twitter, my friend Carolyn Hinds counters with her Top 10 ranking (thread)….

Even though we had a lot of new group debuts, and solo releases, March felt pretty dry, but I've managed to pull together a list I'm happy with. Here's to hoping April and summer gives us better and more original music (EXO come through for me please 🙏🏾)#KPopTop10 #KPop https://t.co/YOyYTuhm91

My Favorite Space Horror Films!

My argument: horror cannot be set in space

— Elle Hunt (@elle_hunt) April 6, 2021

My favorites ranked in accordance to their horror effectiveness…

1

#8. Pandorum

Two crew members of a spaceship wake up from hypersleep to discover that all their colleagues are missing. Despite this, it appears that they are not alone. (imdb.com)

1-1

#7. Sunshine

In the not-too-distant future, Earth’s dying sun spells the end for humanity. In a last-ditch effort to save the planet, a crew of eight men and women ventures into space with a device that could revive the star. However, an accident, a grave mistake and a distress beacon from a long-lost spaceship throw the crew and its desperate mission into a tailspin. (rottentomatoes.com)

1-2

#6. Aliens

After floating in space for 57 years, Lt. Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) shuttle is found by a deep space salvage team. Upon arriving at LV-426, the marines find only one survivor, a nine year old girl named Newt (Carrie Henn). But even these battle-hardened marines with all the latest weaponry are no match for the hundreds of aliens that have invaded the colony. (rottentomatoes.com)

1-3

#5. Pitch Black

A commercial transport ship and its crew are marooned on a planet full of bloodthirsty creatures that only come out to feast at night. But then, they learn that a month-long eclipse is about to occur. (imdb.com)

1-6

#2. Event Horizon

When the Event Horizon, a spacecraft that vanished years earlier, suddenly reappears, a team is dispatched to investigate the ship. Accompanied by the Event Horizon’s creator, William Weir (Sam Neill), the crew of the Lewis and Clark, led by Capt. Miller (Laurence Fishburne), begins to explore the seemingly abandoned vessel. However, it soon becomes evident that something sinister resides in its corridors, and that the horrors that befell the Event Horizon’s previous journey are still present. (rottentomatoes.com)

1-7

#1. Alien

After a space merchant vessel receives an unknown transmission as a distress call, one of the crew is attacked by a mysterious life form and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun. (imdb.com)

Agree?  Disagree?  What did I miss?

Okie-dokie – BIG week ahead.  3 Powder Mage pitchers over 2 days.  And I start work on the rewrite of my pilot for Project F.  THIS will be a tough one and I don’t really have a solution to several issues – but I’m hopeful the answers will magically appear as things move along.  If not, I may have to turn to ethereal muse – Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 year old scotch.

When the dust settles on all this, I’d like to start catching up on some horror movies.  Came across this Best of 2021 list so far….

https://www.usatoday.com/picture-gallery/entertainment/movies/2021/02/12/every-horror-movie-of-2021-ranked/6711361002/

At the rate these projects are going, that may not be until winter of this year.
