April 2, 2021: My Plate is Full!

Today’s pitch went swimmingly. The executive to whom we pitched was engaged, asked all the right questions and we, I believe, offered all the right answers. I followed up the meeting by forwarding him a written overview of our pitch and…that was that. Now we play the waiting game.

And I redirect focus to the next pitch on deck: Powder Mage (one on Tuesday; two on Wednesday).
This weekend, I really need to nail down my game plan for the rewrite on Project F. I’m losing the first act entirely, getting into the action sooner, need to come up with a few gaming and k-pop elements…and a fourth act twist. Then, all I have to do is complete the rewrite.
Received the updated bible for this sci-fi comic book adaptation, along with some truly spectacular accompanying visuals. The plan is to have a finished pitch deck by end of April.
Sadly, my time travel series, TimEscape, isn’t finding any footing. I may have to reconsider my next move with this one.
No word on the horror feature.
Meanwhile, locking down potential buyers for the other time travel series. We have a pitch deck in place and should be taking it out shortly.
I’ve been invited to pitch a production company I’ve been looking to work with for quite some time now. I have a couple of weeks to come up with three solid network suitable ideas. So far, I have one and a half.
My agent wants me to pitch that streamer. I’d like to go in with three solid ideas (and my back pocket Dark Matter miniseries pitch). So far, I have two.
A company reached out to use regarding our small town horror pilot. They offered some great ideas, but I honestly don’t have time to do a rewrite at this point.
All that to say, this is how I’ve been feeling of late…

Lol. Good one. They really had me going until I looked at the price chart and saw that they expected struggling small business owners to cough up about 3k for a sticker.

Mangonada with Tajin? Yes/Nohttps://t.co/jtRG4cALyH
— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) April 1, 2021
Okay, I’m going to be honest. I have no idea what Tajin is.
Today’s lunch! According to Akemi, she actually eats more sushi since meeting me than she ever did while living in Tokyo.
Tomorrow is Pitch Day for our reimagining of that classic sci-f series (with the killer opening theme). 1 p.m. EST! We’re prepped and I have no doubt we’re going to kill it. But, sometimes, even the most fantastic of takes are for naught as multitudinous factors ultimately influence that final decision. The one thing we do have working in our favor is the fact that the executive we’ll be speaking with is a savvy sci-fi fan – a rarity in this industry!
Finally, I leave you with one of my favorite scenes from a Dark Matter episode chock full o’ great scenes…

March 30, 2021: Pitches, Burger Fries, and Dinosaur Hoodie!
So, the first Powder Mage pitch went very well. I think. No notes in the post-zoom review. And the execs seem to respond well. I mean, no one did that thing where your attention wanders to something else off-screen – like a second conversation, beautiful view, or funny cat – and the follow-up questions were smart and on point. So next, we follow up with the pitch deck (a more detailed overview of the series with terrific accompanying visuals) for them to peruse at their leisure. And, while we await their response…
I switch gears to prepping the pitch for that classic sci-fi reimagining. My partner on this one, Paul Cornell, and I will reconvene on Thursday for a final run-thru in advance of the big event.
Then, next week, I’m looking at another three Powder Mage pitches…so far.

Ah, this takes me back to when I was living in Vancouver. I’d pick up ube cake from my local Philippine bakery and enjoy a slice topped with vanilla ice cream and avokaat (eggnog-flavored) liquor.
This morning, Paul Cornell and I did a zoom run-thru of our pitch for that reimagined sci-fi classic. I think it’s a great take and we’re both very excited at the prospect of possibly, just maybe, developing it to full-blown series. But, first things first.
Speaking of firsts – I have my first Powder Mage pitch tomorrow afternoon. The executive we’ll be pitching to is considered a friendly, so it should be a relatively relaxed start to this sales tour.
Finally, I leave you with this breaking news from my mom: Someone has made a movie based on Howard’s End!

March 27, 2021: Rice Crackers, Trending Topics, and Stargate!
Whenever we visit our local Japanese corner shop, Akemi spends half the time agonizing over whether or not she should pick up some rice crackers. On the surprisingly rare occasions she actual does pick them up, she’ll eat one, then ask me to hide the rest so that she isn’t tempted to immediately eat them all. And so, I spend a good twenty minutes carefully tucking each individually wrapped rice cracker away – between blankets, in my sock drawer, atop a high shelf, inside one of my jackets, behind the liquor cabinet, etc. What ensues is the equivalent of an Easter egg hunt as Akemi scours the place, searching high, low, and everywhere in between, thrilling to the joy of discovery. Inevitably, she’ll grow frustrated and asks me to reveal my hiding spots – and, while I remember most, there are quite a few I don’t recall…until, sometimes, months later when I’m rooting around for cufflinks, toothpaste, or my copy of Ted Chiang’s Stories of Your Life and Others. Tonight, she has given up, assuming – by her count – that she has found all outstanding rice crackers.
Shhhhh.

Akemi uses the term “Cinderella fit” to apply to perfect fits – like that giant container of protein powder that slides right into that spot on the top shelf of your pantry. I’ve never heard the term used before, but I love it. Wonder if it’s another one of her Japanese terms.
Did an interview today for a forthcoming book on science fiction and now putting the finishing touches on the pitch for that reimagined sci-fi classic with the kick-ass opening theme. My co-writer on the project, Paul Cornell, and I have been going back and forth and I believe we finally have a (near) final version. Sometime next week, we’ll get together for a zoom pitch run-through and then look ahead to Friday’s main event. Also on tap next week – three Powder Mage pitches. So far.
Tomorrow, it’s a notes zoom call for Project F. And then – the weekend is upon us! And it’s look like summer is too!
