March 23, 2021: Pitches, Stargate, and French Toast Sandwiches!
Alrighty. Almost finished locking down the pitch for the reimagining of that classic sci-fi series. All that’s really left to do is a polish, sign-off on the final changes, and a divvying up of the pitch proper. 10 days and counting!
Also, locking down dates and times for the Powder Mage pitch. The first is in a little less than a week.
Awaiting updates on TimEscape and the horror feature, and looking to nail down potential homes for the other time travel series pitch.
I expect I’ll be drinking a lot more double chocolate mocha’s in the coming weeks.

March 20, 2021: Fielding your question!
Mills asks: “A question popped into my head last night (nothing intellectual so feel free to ignore) but when production wrapped on your SG series what happened to the hero Stargates? I understand that when a set is struck things tend to go missing here and there- did you see anyone leaving the studios with a suspiciously large trailer covered in tarpaulin?”
Answer: To be honest, I don’t know what happened to our hero gate. I do know that one of the gates – presumably the Pegasus gate – was sold off in parts. It was auctioned off along with most of the other Stargate-related items. I do regret not having kept a few more keepsakes after SGU wrapped. Those Lost Tribe space suits were particularly cool.
mr_machia asks: “Speaking of Dark Matter, is there any chance that we might get a novelization of the series? ”
Answer: In a word – no. The prospect of sitting down to write a novel is too daunting, and I’m the only one who can tell my story. Still holding out hope for that miniseries though!
Herb asks: “What platform do you use for anime?”
Answer: I use Netflix and Amazon Prime (to a limited extent). Otherwise, I depend on Akemi’s Japan connection!
Tam Dixon writes: “I do love your Akemi stories. Does she mind that you’re sharing these gems?”
Answer: Nope. She doesn’t mind. But as payback, has started featuring videos of me on her youtube channel.
Line Noise asks: “I’m intrigued by the Icy Squares. What makes them icy?”
Answer: I’m not sure, but I believe it’s the weird edible oil product that gives them a very unique texture.
Carl asks: “How likely are you to be back to write episodes of SG ?”
Answer: Well, a new series has to be green lit first. At that point, it will be up to Brad to assemble his writers’ room. If he asks, and I’m free, I’d love to work a new Stargate series.
Carl asks: “Besides MGM to get into the project, they need a channel (or many) like Syfy to buy the series, Have they been approach and have they show interest ?”
Answer: I’m not as dialed into the specifics of everywhere they are pitching the show.
Tam Dixon writes: “Did I hear that correctly about Akemi falling down the stairs?”
Answer: That was an incident to back when she was working at the Pierre Marcolini Cafe in Ginza. Yes, she took a tumble – with a trayful of chocolate parfaits. Sadly, the parfaits did not survive.
Drea writes: “Has Akemi made any decisions about whether or not she wants to try her hand at growing her own mushrooms at home?”
Answer: I think she finds the task a little too daunting. But she’s already started considering what crops to plant for this upcoming season.
Capping things off with today’s Yes/No. I think I could use one of these…

March 18, 2021: Infinitesimal Plastic Shards! Yes/No! Anime Roundup!
I received my new VISA card and this time I didn’t wait. I fished my old card out of my wallet, set it down on the table, and set off in search of the scissors. The last time I got a new card, I just slipped it into my wallet, promptly forgot about it, ended up confusing it with my old card, then spent an entire day trying to figure out why it had suddenly stopped working. And so, I fished the scissors out of the butcher’s block then returned to the kitchen island where I got to work, first snipping away at the surrounding area, then targeting my name and number with surgical precision, cutting through the letters and numbers at varied angles, my efforts so focused in their intensity that my hand started cramping. By the time I was done, a seemingly infinitesimal pile of plastic shards lay before me. I swept them into my hand then visited every room in the place, sprinkling pieces into different garbage cans to stymie even the most dedicated of identity thieves. Then, satisfied, I headed back to the kitchen. Where I discovered I’d actually cut up the wrong card.

Anime. Finished Akudama Drive.
Loved the production design and the premise but found a few of the characters annoying in the early goings and the direction a little over the top at times. But it gets better, much better, and darker, much darker. The strength of its back half vaults into Top 10 of 2021 contention. Thanks to Tauri Jay for the tip.
Watching Beastars season 2.
The first season was one of my very favorite anime of 2020 and is, by far, Akemi’s #1. Season 2 doesn’t skip a beat. Beautiful character designs, gorgeously fluid animation, a compelling story, and some truly wonderful writing.
Looking forward to Evangelion: Thrice Upon A Time…
Although am fully expecting to be left alternated elated, frustrated, and extremely unsatisfied.
So, what are you watching?

So, looks like I’ll be leading the Powder Mage charge with a verbal pitch (as opposed to leading with the pitch deck). Spent much of today pulling it together – my introduction, the opening tease, the world, the pilot episode and the character introductions, the series overview, tone and themes. I’m hoping to finalize the document by end of day tomorrow so I can start reviewing and rehearsing, maybe a couple of hundred times before the process actually begins.
Speaking of pitches, my partner on that proposed classic sci-fi reboot, the lovely and talented Paul Cornell, is presently hammering out a preliminary pitch. He’s got a great take that he’s been sitting on for four years (the last time we discussed taking a run at the series) and I’m looking forward to getting it out there.
Wednesday, Tara and I have yet another zoom chat concerning that small town horror series (It’s Paper Moon meets The Haunting of Bly Manor!). We’ve prepared a pitch, but I’m hoping it’s more of a relaxed conversation. A leisurely chart if you will.
No updates on TimEscape as it makes its continues its circuitous journey through the Hollywood decision machine. Thought, of course, if there was good news, I would have heard by now. The same goes for my horror feature.
Finally, I’ve been impatiently awaiting notes on the first draft of my sci-fi/gaming/k-pop series. Finally got them, let them sit in my inbox for a couple of days, reviewed, and instantly envied my pre-notes state. Be careful what you wish for!
