So, looks like I’ll be leading the Powder Mage charge with a verbal pitch (as opposed to leading with the pitch deck). Spent much of today pulling it together – my introduction, the opening tease, the world, the pilot episode and the character introductions, the series overview, tone and themes. I’m hoping to finalize the document by end of day tomorrow so I can start reviewing and rehearsing, maybe a couple of hundred times before the process actually begins.
Speaking of pitches, my partner on that proposed classic sci-fi reboot, the lovely and talented Paul Cornell, is presently hammering out a preliminary pitch. He’s got a great take that he’s been sitting on for four years (the last time we discussed taking a run at the series) and I’m looking forward to getting it out there.
Wednesday, Tara and I have yet another zoom chat concerning that small town horror series (It’s Paper Moon meets The Haunting of Bly Manor!). We’ve prepared a pitch, but I’m hoping it’s more of a relaxed conversation. A leisurely chart if you will.
No updates on TimEscape as it makes its continues its circuitous journey through the Hollywood decision machine. Thought, of course, if there was good news, I would have heard by now. The same goes for my horror feature.
Finally, I’ve been impatiently awaiting notes on the first draft of my sci-fi/gaming/k-pop series. Finally got them, let them sit in my inbox for a couple of days, reviewed, and instantly envied my pre-notes state. Be careful what you wish for!

March 13, 2021: Just when you think it’s over…
Four years ago, I attempted to track down the rights to a classic sci-fi series . It was a favorite of mine growing up and, I felt, ripe for a reboot, so I reached out. And came up against a series of dead-ends. I handed the job off to my former agency who either got nowhere (and were too ashamed to tell me) or simply lost interest. Whichever the case, it was another dead end and frustrated, I gave up. Then, last week, I read that the rights-holders had recently signed a deal with a company I had worked with in the past. I sent one more query about the property, fully expecting another dead end – only to be informed that they would be happy to hear my pitch.
It just goes to show that, in this business, you never know. That horror feature I thought was dead has been resurrected and is presently making the rounds. That small town supernatural series I believed was finished – multiple times – has apparently found possible new life. And the pitch for that classic sci-fi reimagining I assumed wasn’t going anywhere will, at the very least, finally have a shot…four years later!
Meanwhile, as the Powder Mage pitch deck goes out, I’m thinking of doing a dedicated blog post in which I cast the prospective series using only Dark Matter cast members. Sort of a Dark Mage crossover. Who would would you cast as Field Marshal Tamas? Vlora? Julene? The colorful Mihali? This is going to be fun!

March 12, 2021: Remembering Cliff Simon
Last night, news broke about the sudden passing of actor Cliff Simon who played the role of the system lord Ba’al over several seasons on Stargate. It’s no secret that Ba’al was one of my very favorite villains to write, and this was wholly attributable to Cliff’s masterful performance. He imbued the character with confidence and color, a delectably wicked self-assuredness that made me an instant fan following his introductory appearance in SG-1’s fifth season two parter Summit/Last Stand. The episodes were designed to showcase some potential new villains for the series, and Cliff not only seized the opportunity; he devoured it. It was an impressive debut, but it wasn’t until the following year, in season 6’s Abyss, that Cliff truly gave life to the character in a delightfully nefarious guest appearance at turns commanding and comedic. And that’s one of the things I loved about Cliff’s Lord Ba’al. He wasn’t just a formidable opponent. He also had style and, most importantly, a sense of humor – which was very much Cliff himself.
He ended up guesting in fifteen episodes, a few of my personal favorites being Ex Deus Machina (in which the former “god” takes up residence on Earth as a powerful business magnate) and Quest 1 and II (which featured him in fine roguish style, forming an unlikely alliance with the team only to end up getting decked by Samantha Carter).
His final appearance was in Stargate: Continuum, a time-tripping adventure that confirmed yet again his status as one of the Stargate franchise’s greatest villains. I remember running into him in the production offices after wrap where he suggested that maybe, just maybe, the SGC hadn’t been successful in ferreting out all the Ba’al clones and that perhaps one clone had survived to live another day. And I agreed that it was possible, not because I was humoring him, but because I sincerely wanted to write for his character again some day.
I knew Cliff Simon the professional but never really had the opportunity to get to know him personally as, clearly, many of you had over the course of numerous convention meet-ups and fan events. So, in tribute to Cliff, leave a comment to this post. Tell us about an interaction you may have had with him, a happy memory, or let us know your favorite Ba’al episode or moment.

March 11, 2021: Childhood treats, Stick Toffee Cheddar, and more Podcasts!
Was walking by Forno Cultura the other day and glimpsed these in the windows so, of course, I had to pick them up. These were an Easter tradition growing up in my Italian household – giant hollow chocolate eggs containing surprises (sometimes toys but usually more chocolate eggs). Then, at Christmas, it used to be these weird but compulsively edible chocolate-oil products…
Nutella, meanwhile, was an all year thing and smoked oyster sandwiches usually reserved for late night snacking.
So, what foods remind you of your youth?

For Joseph Mallozzi, Ripple Effect was a stand out episode – it allowed him to pay tribute to what had been before on the show. Including Dr Fraser and Martouf returning.

March 6, 2021: I’ve been hacked!
I had just completed my morning workout when I received the following email from my buddy, Doug: “Hey, Joe. I just saw Rayban advertisements getting posted to your Instagram. I think someone got a hold of your account. Just giving you a heads up.”
Rayban ads? That couldn’t be right. Could it?
Then, a text message from actor Alex Mallari Jr. Simply: “Mallozzi! Did you get hacked?”
I was shocked. Not by the fact that some stranger had possibly gained access to my account, but the fact that people actually follow me on Instagram closely enough to be able to discern when something is up.
Anyway, I checked my IG account and, sure enough, there were the two Rayban ads. I was at a completely loss. What steps did I need to take to rectify the situation? Who should I contact? I was about to google “What to do when your instagram account gets hacked?” when I thought – Maybe I’ll just try logging in first.
You would assume I’d no longer have access to my account. If so, you’d be wrong. I was able to log in, delete the offending ads, change my password, set up 2 step verification, and change my password again just to be on the safe side.
Odd, no?
When I told Akemi I’d been hacked, her response was utter disbelief: “Who would want to hack YOUR account?”
I insisted I was utterly hackable. She seemed dubious.
Anyway, all this to say I’m counting on all of you to keep track of my various social media accounts and let me know if you notice any weirder than usual activity like ads for Rayban ads or enthusiastic praise of cilantro or ewok-related anything.
Thanks!
P.S. I’m thinking of restarting the long-dormant Book of the Month Club. Who’s in?
