February 6, 2021: Sushi, Suicide Squad, and Super Bowl Pick!

Akemi discovered a new sushi source this morning.  A former chef who used to work at one of our favorite restaurants in town has started his own sushi-sashimi delivery service, sourcing his fish from all over Japan and serving up some truly spectacular meals.

Our bentos arrived, beautifully wrapped.

Pxl_20210206_201938860

Unwrapped.

Akemi ordered the sashimi omakase.

While I went with the sushi omakase.

Sadly, not pictured: the ultra-sweet fruit dessert that Akemi ate immediately upon unpacking.

If you’re in the Toronto area, head on over to instagram and order from mark_sushii for a wonderful meal.

Both pick up and delivery are available!  Highly recommended!

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad arrives this summer and I fully expect it to be the greatest DCU movie ever made.  Please check out the teaser trailer and tell me: Who do you stan?

Me?  I’m #TeamKingShark!

You are no doubt wondering who I’ll be rooting for this Super Bowl given that this is the worst possible match-up so far as I am concerned.  Well, I’ve given it much thought and…

On the one hand, I hate KC, being a longtime Raiders fan.

On the other hand, I’ve always hated Brady and the Patriots.

But I guess I hate the Patriots organization more than I hate Brady and seeing him win a Super Bowl would no doubt drive them crazy. So, I guess I’m rooting for the Bucs out of spite.

GO BUCS!

February 5, 2021: Busy Day! Here, have some Stargate concept art and cosmic brownies!

Whew!  What a day.  Got feedback on the Project F pilot and the Powder Mage overview, strategized regarding three more projects, did some stock research, sourced and sent off some tax documents to my agent, and had four zoom calls with some amazing young and talented writers.  Oh, and also – and most importantly – I took Suji for a carpet run.  Now, just need to send off some notes on another project, hop on another zoom, and my day is done.

Let’s unwind with a little Yes/No…

February 4, 2021: New PJ’s!

Suji surprised me with new pajamas!

Ill-fitting, uncomfortable, hangs awkwardly, hot, and itchy.  But, otherwise, great!

WAIT a minute…

February 2, 2021: Setsuban Deka!

Today, we celebrated Setsuban (the day before the beginning of spring!) by eating the various Japanese dishes Akemi prepared for the occasion…

Img_0636 Hoso maki (with tuna and green onions) Img_0645 Uni, maguro, sake, hiramasa, and ikura on rice.

So, who did you all celebrate?

In case you missed it, here’s yesterday’s Dark Matter Episode 204, “We Were Family”, discussion with the gang at Orville Nation, director John Stead, actor Anthony Lemke, and yours truly.

A great time was had by all.

Still awaiting feedback on the pilot and series overview I delivered and, while I really should be putting the downtime to good use by starting work on that other pilot, I find it difficult to focus while on standby.  So, instead, I’m taking the time to educate myself on the stock market – and the various crooked ways hedge funds and power players game the system while those in power turn a blind eye.  Fascinating stuff.

Saw a report today that two individuals are being sought in connection to some attempted dog poisonings in the area. Apparently, peanut shells stuffed with rat poison were discovered in various parks – including one we walk Suji through every morning.

While we’re on the topic, Subway is being sued because claimants maintain their tuna subs contain no actual tuna.  Or fish for that matter.

https://www.foodbeast.com/news/subway-tuna-lawsuit/

I mean, of course not.  Didn’t they already establish that their sandwiches were made out of old yoga mats?

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/subway-says-yoga-mat-chemical-almost-out-of-bread-1.2606898

And to wash that taste out of your mouths…

So, what do you say?  Yes/No

January 30, 2021: A little Stargate! A little Dark Matter! A little chocolate whisky! And a little code roe!

Mallozzi-announcement-featured

Announcing my new Stargate podcast with the gang at The Companion.  Gathers Gonna Rate will be asking fans to weigh in on a variety of subjects – The franchise’s greatest AU episode!  Best Sam and Jack moment!  Most annoying decision by a guest character!  Then, we tally up the scores and discuss the results – and, of course, offer up our own thoughts on the subject…

https://www.thecompanion.app/2021/01/27/introducing-a-new-stargate-podcast-gaters-gonna-rate-with-joe-mallozzi/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=jm&utm_campaign=ggr

To those asking – yes, The Companion is a paid subscription, but fear not!  You can try for free OR wait a couple of weeks for the podcast to be released to the general public.  No matter what, you won’t miss out!

What do you say?  Yes/No?

To be honest, I have a bigger issue with the omelet than the cod roe.

A little something that showed up in Suji’s care package from Germany.  Thank you, Tanja!

This takes me back to when we were living in Vancouver and used to visit Xocholat.  The Zotter line were always more of an impulse buy with flavors ranging from the somewhat strange to the downright bizarre.  Just checking the online shop in Canada…

Espresso Macchiato.  White Wine.  Tequila with Salt and Lemon?  Sure, why not!

An early reminder to join me and the gang at Orville Nation for a live Dark Matter video chat this Monday when we’ll be talking about one of my very favorite episodes – Episode 204, We Were Family.

To refresh you memories…

January 29, 2021: A pseudo concussion!

1-60 Auto Draft

Hummingbird Salamander

A cryptic note leads to the discovery of a stuffed hummingbird which, in turn, serves as the first clue to a gripping mystery – and the first step in an obsessive investigation.

An unpredictable character-driven eco-thriller from author Jeff Vandermeer.

I almost gave myself a concussion yesterday.  I say “almost” because I wouldn’t really know, having never had a concussion.  Also, I don’t want to be presumptuous and assume concussed status given the no doubt numerous actually concussed individuals battling nausea, dizziness, and headaches.  I mean, I suffered all three of the aforementioned symptoms after the heavy stairwell door slammed me in the temple, but received no official designation from a health care professional.  Akemi did, however, advise me to take a couple of Tylenols which certainly helped.

Oooh, look at what I found…

January 28, 2021: Robbin’ Hood! Yes/No! Waiting is the hardest part!

More than half of all Robinhood users own at least some GameStop stock.

They are now unable to freely trade it; the app is only allowing users to close out their positions. https://t.co/DgN1H496wx

— Motherboard (@motherboard) January 28, 2021

Whew!  I spent the entire day following the Robin Hood fiasco – institutional investors and insiders suddenly changing the rules because they were getting beaten at their own game by a bunch of regular investors on reddit.  I was utterly amazed at how brazen they were in their seemingly illegal actions, shutting down the ability to trade in certain stocks, indifferent to the optics or the potential fallout.

On @BloombergTV now, Interactive Brokers Chm Thomas Peterffy said regulators/brokers agreed that restrictions on trading because they believed the short squeeze would keep "going and going." So they had to "stop the losses."

Stop the losses for whom, Thomas? Who was at risk?

— Jim Bianco (@biancoresearch) January 28, 2021

But will there even be a fallout beyond the pending lawsuits?  Politicians talk a big game, expressing plenty of outrage on twitter, but I’ll be interested to see how much back bone they truly have when the time comes.

New York Attorney General's office says they're "reviewing Robinhood app activity," including GameStop issues. pic.twitter.com/WV76Gf8kka

Meanwhile…

Lovely to have all these new followers .. can we just check that you know that you’re following The World Wide Robin Hood Society in Nottingham and not the Robin Hood App .. if so .. a big welcome from Sherwood 🙌

Pink Mac and Cheese with candy flavor? Yes/No

— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) January 28, 2021

The worst part of being a writer is the waiting.  You complete your overview, outline, or script, and send it out, and then you stand by for notes.  The first few days are great because your days are free and you can focus on other aspects of your life but, as the days stretch into a week, and then more than a week, you start to wonder: What is taking so long?  How many notes are they amassing?  Are they already in negotiations with a new writer?  And, as more time passes, you begin to second-guess those creative choices.  Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten rid of the mysterious murder?  Maybe I should have included the scene where Dran gets thrown out of the moving car.  Maybe I should have suggested that Boys Republic song over that second AleXa track.  Or maybe I’m overthinking things and they simply haven’t had time to read it.

I’m sure they’ll get back to me shortly…
