The Beauty of Fiction

Well, now that the unicorn debate has been settled, we shall move on to this week’s writing challenge. littlegirlwriting

Write an opening sentence (or two)of a unicorn story.

Here’s mine:

It was impossible not to hear the snorts of jealousy to her left and the audible head shaking to her right, but she didn’t care. Sally, the unicorn, was getting the first pair of unicorn wings ever.

Do They…or Don’t They?

We had quite the debate raging in our home Saturday night about–brace yourself–unicorns.

We were playing a family game where you write down a bunch of words, put them in a bowl and then (first round) describe them however you want, (second round) give one word clues, and, finally (third round) act them out.

One of the kids had written down “unicorn” and described it as flying.

The boys went crazy…”unicorns don’t fly.”

The girls held their ground…”yes they do.”

I simply watched, listened, and laugh...

The Power of Persistence

lynnPlease join me in welcoming Lynn Cahoon (a dear friend) who has agreed to guest post for me today. Enjoy!

This author gig is hard work. You think of a story, make up characters and a plot, then write the story as entertaining as possible. Then you edit, looking for repetition, like ‘around about’. I’ve used that saying in conversations since I was around about knee high. My editor believes one or the other works. And once I tried it out, I agreed.

Oh, back to the writing process. (I get d...

Monday Morning Recap

My family and I had a very nice Easter holiday and hope you all did as well.

I’m off to return DD #1 to college today so I’ll be gone for a chunk of the day.

In the meantime, what was your favorite part of your holiday weekend?

Some New Scraps

Let’s get straight to the Bits & Pieces this week:

1) Someone hands you $250 and says you HAVE to spend it on yourself. What do you buy/do with it?

2) You have six hours all to yourself. No responsibilities or “have to-dos” on your list. What do you do/how do you spend it?

3) You all-time favorite Easter candy?

4) Your least favorite Easter candy?

And They’re Down

After watching a rather funny (if not cringe worthy) series of videos yesterday about little kids getting totally sidelined by pets, I have a bit of a writing challenge for you.

Write a paragraph (from the perspective of either a little boy, little girl, or even the pet) about a seemingly innocent walk completely undone by an overeager pet. Make it funny, make it serious, whatever you want.

Okay, go (I so can’t wait to read these).

F-R-A-G-I-L-E, or Otherwise

In honor of the little “contest” I’m doing with three other mystery authors on our Facebook pages, I thought I’d ask another question of all of you.

Have you ever won anything? If so, what kind of stuff?

Me? I won a coloring contest when I was about 10. It was hosted by our local Gap store and it required me to draw my family in Gap jeans. This was a bit of a challenge considering my parents had never owned (or worn) jeans before. Still, I used my imagination, colored the picture, and I won. Th...

Print or Paper?

Today’s more about my curiosity over reading habits, these days.

Here we go:

1) Do you still read and/or buyprint magazines?

2) Do you still read the newspaper? Local or national?

3) Do you read more paper books or e-books?

On Stage

We drove into Pennsylvania yesterday to see Dear Daughter # 1 in a play at her college. She played “Julie” in Ladybirds, a naïve young girl in a group of (for the most part) older women. She did a great job in her role and we had a lot of fun watching her perform.

Of course, this morning, I’m thinking back on plays I did as a kid, Treasure Island (I was a pirate) sticking out most.It was a summer theater group and I remember having a lot of fun with that show.

How about you? Were you ever in an...

Bits OR Pieces

A wee late this morning, but still here. :)

Okay, today’s bits are about choices.

1) Would you rather write a best-selling novel or be an expert at picking stocks?

2) Would you rather be rich or famous?

3) Would you rather be able to see one year into the future or be able to change any one decision from your past?

4) Would you rather relive one random week of high school or watch the video of your own birth?

Interesting stuff.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
