Bits Bits

Bits & Pieces time!

1) What was one of yourfavorite lunch box snacks when YOU were a kid?

2) What one food do you picture when you think of a Memorial Day picnic or barbecue?

3) Is there a reality competition show you wouldn’t mind being on? Which one?

4) Sneakers or sandals?

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A Special Someone

Although last week’s writing exercise netted no response, usually you guys are really good at coming up with stuff. So I figure I’ll try again this week.

Here’s your prompt:

Write a few sentences about someone who means a lot to you. You can put it out there as to who and why, or you can be more writerly and SHOW us with your words. Your choice.

I’m Afraid of What?

Over the last three years or so, I’ve developed a pretty strong fear of heights, particular when steps and heights come together.

It drive me nuts that I’m afraid of it, and I try to work through it, but it seems to get the better of me these days.

So, tell me, have any of you developed fears about things that were once easy for you? How do you deal with it?

Finding Insight in a Book

I’ve never been a self-help or how-to kind of reader. I didn’t read how-to books or articles about parenting, because I knew the kind of kids I wanted to raise and I instinctively got the notion of modeling the behavior you want. When I decided to get serious about writing, I didn’t read how to books. I figured I would just sit down and figure it out myself.

This past week, however, I was given a book that was, at the very least, “insightful” when it comes to being a writer. It doesn’t tell yo...

Taking a Day

It’s been a busy few weeks and there are more on the horizon as we move through May and into June. Yet, despite the busyness, I’ve been writing…and writing…and writing.

The result? I sent a new proposal to my agent (fingers crossed, okay?), and I’m making some decent progress on yet another project (this one non-mystery). The latter is a story I’m just excited to tell within the confines of a new-to-me genre. If anything comes of it, great. If not, at least I tried.

Now that the proposal is off...

Where In the World?

Writing exercise time! :) littlegirlwriting

Part of writing a book is setting the scene in which your characters live and the action takes place.

Part of setting that scene is to make it come alive for your readers through as many senses as possible.

Take us somewhere (by smells, sounds, tastes, whatever) in a few sentences and let’s see if we can guess where you have us.

Ready? Go!

Moving, Moving, Moving

I’ve lived in 10 different places in my life. I started out in New Jersey, moved to Connecticut, then to Ohio for college. After Ohio, I moved to South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Ohio (as an adult), back to Missouri, and then New York.

I spent the most time in Missouri–17 y ears, which is why, I imagine, I look at that as my “home state.”.

Having moved so often, taught me a lot of things about our country and the differences/similarities between areas. But perhaps the most importan...

Go On, Tell Us

I’ll be honest, it’s a rare day I read a magazine anymore. It’s not that I don’t enjoy them, because I do. It’s really more a case of not having time.

I do however flip through magazines in a doctor’s office, on an airplane, and at my hair salon.

My go to magazines in those cases?

The celebrity stuff. I know most of the stuff in there is probably completely untrue, but what the heck, right?

So when you’re in a waiting room with nothing else to do, what kind of magazine do you reach for?

Bring It Back

Every year, as we approach the summer months, I look forlornly back at “the Banana Clip” days…a hair clip that was big in the 80′s. banana clip

I miss it.

And honestly, if the world can bring back bell bottoms and leg warmers, why can’t they bring back The Banana Clip??

:)

Now it’s your turn. What fashion item would you love to see come back from the past?

Odd Bits, Fun Bits

I’ve assembled an odd potpourri of bits for you today, but they’re ones I think could be fun.

1) Do you still have your tonsils? Wisdom teeth? Appendix?

2) Favorite cereal?

3) Do you call it lunch meat or cold cuts? And what is your favorite?

4) What’s the first thing you notice about people?

5) Define “strength”.

Off to pick up DD #1 from her first year of college, but looking forward to seeing all your answers when I get home this evening.
