Balancing Work and Writing by Mandy Rosko
I’ve been back to work for barely three weeks and I’m already figuring out ways to balance out my new work life, and keeping up with my word goals.
Granted, I’ve not been doing a very good job of meeting those word goals. I’m a touch behind for the month, but I think, all things considered, that I’m still doing well, and there’s still a good chance to catch up and make it easier for myself to meet these goals if I just follow a set of rules

Attack of the WereTurkeys Paranormal-Scope
[image error]Being somewhat aware of the habits of turkeys before they end up on the plate, I suggest you beware.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
WereTurkeys are roosting in a tree outside your home. Be cautious and quiet, as any noise can rouse them into attacking. They want one thing. Your groceries! Prepare for unexpected company.
Taurus:
WereTurkeys enjoy jogging–down the center of the room. Travel will become more challenging. Go slow and on course and you should get through this okay.
Gemini :
A flock of WereTurkeys corners a demon, who screams for help. Hang out with your own flock this week. If you get a chance to eat turkey, eat it.
Cancer:
Little dogs with their bravado will scare off the WereTurkeys and keep you safe. You have a friend in your corner.
Leo:
After all the hard work foraging for food, WereTurkeys LOVE to nap. You deserve a nap, too.
Virgo:
The other thing WereTurkeys fear is being invited to dinner. On that note, here is a recipe for delicious Turkey Roulade. https://www.nwtf.org/hunt/article/wild-turkey-roulade
Libra:
WereTurkey run and/or walk about 2 miles a day. Is it time to re-evaluate your exercise program. As always confer, with your doctor first.
Scorpio:
WereTurkeys are running down your street. Run for your life. Lock the doors. Shut the windows. Watch TV and eat the other white meat.
Sagittarius:
WereTurkeys enjoy preening in the sun. Take a hint and plan a vacation.
Capricorn:
WereTurkeys feel that taking care of their feathers is a priority. Time to go through the wardrobe and toss anything not up to par.
Aquarius:
WereTurkey males court by strutting and gobbling. I wonder if they pause to compliment the cook? Has someone been strutting in front of you?
Pisces:
WereTurkey is delicious when roasted just right. Ignore their red eyes. Let go of your fears. Soar higher than a wereturkey this week, and enjoy special time with friends. Bring the cranberrry sauce.
Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving this week!

Cooking Up a Book by Laura Greenwood
This week has seen a couple of firsts for me – including the first time I’ve ever been published in a cookbook! A few of us have come together to create a cookbook inspired by the food we mention in our books – it’s been a lot of fun and involved actually cooking some of the things. So I figured I’d talk about my recipes in Hungry For More too. You can read a related bonus scene in my Facebook Group too!

Download Hungry For More here: http://books2read.com/rhcookbook
The recipes included from my book includes:
Tinned Apricot Crumble as mentioned in Fae Blessed
The main character of Fae Blessed, Perry, has been living in the apocalypse for five years and in that time hasn’t been able to eat her Mum’s tinned apricot crumble. Luckily she runs across someone who has the tinned fruit she loves too much…
H.E.C. Juice as featured in Fifth Soul, co-written with Arizona Tape
H.E.C. Juice is the health drink creation of fire dragon shifter, Hector…even if the main character of Fifth Soul, Lola, isn’t so keen on the drink. It’s fruity with a spicy kick!
Blood as inspired by Shattered Illusions
What would a vampire be without blood? Former vampire hunter, Ashryn, soon finds out when a mission goes very very wrong. This is a cocktail inspired by her!
Saffron’s Naughty Gingerbread as featured in Sweet About Me
Baker, Saffron, is all about the sweet treats and this year she’s in charge of the gingerbread for when Santa comes. But her gingerbread takes a naughty turn when one of her love interests starts playing around with it…it was one of my favourite scenes to write in Sweet About Me!
Fire Ants as inspired by Fifth Soul, co-written with Arizona Tape
Lola is back for this one and making her favourite snack to eat while gaming…fire ants! Except these aren’t quite what you’d expect. No ants were harmed in the creation of this recipe – it is in fact completely vegetarian (as is everything on this list!)
Malan’s Fluffy Waffles as mentioned in From The Deeps, co-written with Skye MacKinnon
The main character in the Seven Wardens series, Macey, has a very minor obsession with waffles…only problem is that she can’t seem to be able to get any, especially from the cryptic and incredibly frustrating prophet, Malan. Why can’t a girl just get some waffles in exchange for saving the world?
I hope you check out our new cookbook! All the profits are going to a charity combating world hunger too! You can get it here: books2read.com/rhcookbook

My Farewell Post by Stacy Hoff
[image error]Hello Passionate readers! I have good news, and bad.
I’m the type of person who likes to get the bad news out of the way first. So here it is—I am taking a break from blogging in order to concentrate on writing more novels. I am a full time attorney, wife, mom, and author; my time right now is a little bit tighter than I’d like. I will miss connecting with you on a weekly basis. Reaching out to readers is one of the best aspects of being a published author.
The good news is that I am growing as an author. I have already produced seven published contemporary romance novels. I am branching out to sci-fi (with romance, or course). I’ve been lucky enough to sign with fabulous literary agent, Eva Scalzo of Speilburg Literary. Eva is shopping my sci-fi story, VIRAL, to publishing houses. VIRAL is a “new adult” dystopian tale. It is classified as “cli-fi,” which is a catchy phrase for climate-change based science fiction. VIRAL won first place in the 2018 “Diamonds in the Desert” contest run by the Desert Rose chapter of RWA (sci-fi category). It also won second place in the “Rosemary Award For Excellence” contest run by YARWA, the Young Adult chapter of RWA (in the new adult category). I am crossing my fingers I’ll get a publishing deal soon. If any agent can get this done, Eva can.
While my agent works her fingers to the bone, I’ll be doing the same. I am currently working on several new projects: a sequel to VIRAL, an “own voices” rom-com, and my very first time-travel.
In order to reach my publishing goals, I’ve got to spend more time writing novels. I will still be active on Twitter and FB. My social media handles are below. Please connect with me! You can also reach out to me via my author’s website, which has a “contact me” button. I love to hear from readers. Last but not least, you can sign up for my newsletters. I promise to send no more than four a year. I send these out when I have important news to share, like book signings and new releases.
I hope to continue blogging at some point in the future. Until I do, I hope you will find that my books connect us through the stories themselves.
With love,
Stacy

Whirlwind of Today
This year has gone by in a whirlwind. To think that Thanksgiving is next week, is mind boggling in a way because I feel like someone came and zapped all the time away. In fact, I think it could be accurate for many of us to say that life itself feels like a whirlwind. In this year alone we’ve dealt with multiple natural disasters (hurricanes, wildfires, floods, etc.), trade tensions, political issues (both national and international), turbulent markets and the list goes on and on.
I was speaking with an acquaintance today who jokingly said that it feels the world has just sped up—as if perhaps we are spinning faster. I know that isn’t the case but the dizziness caused by all the information overload lately really makes it seem like her comment wasn’t so out of leftfield.
So what does one do? I’m not sure and the prospect of tackling it all is daunting. I personally believe that we can only take on important issues one at a time—at least if we hope to make some sort of difference in them. In a way, it is like taking the whirlwind and slowing it down to a speed that makes it digestible to each of us.
It is important to ask ourselves what is important to us and what skills we bring to the table to make a difference? Or, what can we learn that will help us? Are we most concerned about the climate and climate change? Is it more important to fight for the preservation of certain rights? One of the greatest things about this country has been our ability to choose what is important to us and aim to make a difference.
Happy writing and have a wonderfully week!

Picking a Favourite Mythological Beast by Laura Greenwood
I’ve loved mythology since I was really small, so much so that I’d buy books on Ancient Egypt (that was my absolute favourite mythology) with my pocket money. But picking just one favourite creature is really tough! There are so many, and as a paranormal romance author, that gets all the harder! I’ve written about shifters, vampires, necromancers, dryads and sirens…Which makes it really hard to pick.
So I’m going with Ammit, mostly in homage to my love of Ancient Egypt as a child. Ammit is an Ancient Egyptian demon who was part lion, part hippo and part crocodile, and she was also known as the devourer of the dead. Which sounds kind of ominous, but actually is really interesting. The Ancient Egyptians believed that when a person’s soul traveled to the afterlife, their heart was weighed by Anubis (the God of Cemeteries & Embalming) against the feather of Ma’at (the Goddess of Truth). If the heart was heavier than the feather, then the soul had led a bad life, and Ammit devoured the heart, stopping that soul from reaching the afterlife.
Sorry, history lesson is now over! I find it all so fascinating that I can’t help myself! Which is why I chose Ammit in the first place. The whole mythology is fascinating to me, and I’m planning to write a series based on the Ancient Egyptian Gods & Goddesses at some point…I don’t think they get enough page time!
My love for Ancient Egypt and its mythology is about to make itself known in books too! This week I’m launching Protectors of Poison, the first look into my paranormal romance Ancient Egyptian mythology inspired world! It follows the goddess, Serket, as she discovers who is trying to steal her name.
To be notified of release, you can join my Facebook Group or Mailing List!

Blurb:
Sera is used to being forgotten and is happy to be, even if her healing powers have waned in the years since people forgot her real name.
Everything changes when a minor god turns up and reveals her scorpions are being blamed for a poisoning. Determined to prove her innocence, Sera must take her place as a goddess once more and uncover the plot threatening to destroy her.
Protectors of Poison can be read as a standalone story and is based on Ancient Egyptian mythology.

The Story of An Immigrant Family by Susan Hanniford Crowley
Before the start of World War I, Julia Holland journeyed from the Ukrainian part of the Austria-Hungary Empire on a holiday to New York City. Her father was a farmer, and he owned several farms. Her mother was originally from Vienna. She came into the country under a visitor’s visa. She was a well-to-do young woman with furs and jewelry. When war broke out, she was stuck and wasn’t able to return to her country. Her uncle who owned a restaurant in the city took her in. To earn her keep, she worked in his Manhattan bistro. She had auburn hair and sparkling blue eyes. She applied for citizenship and went to citizenship classes. She spoke German, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Ukranian, and English.
[image error]James Menelaus Issideridy with his brother George arrived through Ellis Island to apply for legal entry to the United States and start a business here. They were furriers from Greece. They applied for a license to have their store in Manhattan. My grandfather also applied for citizenship and took English language and citizenship classes. He was tall with dark hair and eyes.
He was eating lunch at his favorite restaurant, when he saw Julia’s delicate face through the little window where trays of food was pushed out by the cook staff to the waiters. At that time, women could not wait on tables. Every day at lunchtime, James would make sure he sat at a table where he could easily see her. She saw him and would always smile shyly.
James inquired about Julia, but her uncle was firm that he had two other daughters to get married. James persevered and eventually won him over. But on the day they were to be married, her uncle said that if James wanted to marry her, he would take her with the clothes on her back. He was keeping the furs and jewelry to pay him back for housing and feeding her. She would have no dowry. Julia was furious, but James insisted it didn’t matter to him. They were married. She did love him and learned to speak Greek.
The years passed and James and George prospered in their business. The family lived in a townhouse in Manhattan with a grand piano in the parlor.
[image error]From the left, there is James, then Sultana, his eldest daughter, Helen the youngest, and his wife Julia. This picture was taken before 1929 and the Stock Market Crash when he lost his business.
They moved from Manhattan to Queens and made ends meet.
Below is a photo of Sultana with friends at the fashionable Stork Club. She became a clerk at Lord & Taylor store. Her sister became a secretary for the department store.
[image error]Sultana is on the lower left, Terry, then Terry’s friend. Upper left is Normand, Guy and to the right Rene. Terry liked to set up Sultana on blind dates. That’s how she meet a young sailor from Detroit named John Hanniford. They would get married and have two daughters. Sultana would also be remembered as an artist and a past President of the Lyme Art Association.
That’s the story of my mother’s side of the family.
-Susan (daughter of John and Sultana Hanniford)

Let’s Keep In Touch by Stacy Hoff
[image error]Recently I went to a writers’ conference. Many of the classes at this two-day event focused on book promotion. I agree that promoting books is a necessary evil for any author. (Most authors just want to write novels all day long.) The speakers said that newsletters are an author’s most effective promotional tool. The rationale is that newsletters give authors the ability to:
directly communicate with readers when new releases come out.
not be at the mercy of social media platforms.
have sufficient space to give readers what they want: book excerpts, bonus material, teasers, etc.
I am new to newsletters, but I agree. I have sent out two newsletters so far to my readers. I will keep reaching out by sending them more. I send, however, only when I have major news, like a contest win, a book signing event, or when a new release comes out. No more than four newsletters will go out a year. I don’t want anyone to feel spammed.
Most importantly, I hope you will become one of my subscribers! My last blog post on Nights of Passion will be Friday, November 16th. I hope my newsletter will be our way of staying in touch. So here’s the link:
