Feel the Impact

As I’m writing this blog, I can’t help but think about how impactful a week this will be. I’m not going to take sides or go into politics on this blog, but I will bring up the importance of making an impact or even a difference in our lives. Politics just happens to be one way many believe they can make a difference or an impact but there are many ways to do so and the season of giving is upon us.

As a writer, I’ve often thought of having an impact on my reader- even if that is simply creating a story for them to enjoy and get lost in for a bit. After all, many of us enjoy fictional reading simply for the characters and worlds we get pulled into.

As a person, I’ve also thought of having an impact or making a difference in other ways – volunteer work, donations, coaching. Sometimes it is more rewarding than we can ever expect and other times, it reveals a different type of reality than we were expecting.

As a mother, I worry about making a difference in a different way. I worry about how to teach my children to have a positive impact and make a difference in the lives of those around them. This role is by far, the hardest role for me to play. It is certainly the most time consuming and despite all the resources out there, one can’t help but feel they are flying blind most of the time because you really don’t know how everything is turning out until your child does or doesn’t do something you thought you taught them. Either way, I feel I must try because at least then I have some chance of making a difference.

Happy writing and have a wonderfully impactful week!

Shipping Books in a Postal Strike by Mandy Rosko

I use Canada Post often enough that I need it to ship out the books I get for my Patrons, and I need it to get those books to me on a fairly regular basis.

So when I heard that there was going to be a postal strike in Canada, I got a little worried. I tend to run a little late with most things, so the idea that my Patrons who pay me good money to bring them the books that they are generous enough to let me write for them ^_^

I don’t have all the details, but when I went to the post office today to drop off the first small batch of Patreon print books, I learned that the strike isn’t entirely what I thought it was.

So if you’re in Canada and you want to ship out prizes, books, and/or swag to your readers, you don’t need to fear (too much)

Shipping out to the United States will be all right. If the information I got from the worker behind the counter is correct. If you are in Canada and not in one of the cities where the strike is currently taking place, shipping to the US through regular means should be all right. As should shipping to other Canadian cities where the strikes are not taking place.

You should check online for a current list of the cities that are striking, but there will still be a way to get mail if you are ordering art items (Deserres is using Canpar) or your books from Amazon (I don’t believe UPS is striking. Yet. There are threats of it if you just do a search)

So whether you use the mailing system in Canada to get your goodies, presents for family, or to ship out your books and prizes to the readers you want to reward, do your homework, plan ahead, and find secondary mailing services if the need is great enough.

Good luck, and happy writing

Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes Day Paranormal-Scope

In England, on this day in 1605, Guy Fawkes and company tried and failed to blow up Parliment. Every year, bonfires are lit in celebration of the failed plot. Let’s see what the paranormals are plotting this week.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for not so innocent baby animals and you:

Aries:

Dragons love a good party. Get together with family and friends. Dress your best. Invite a new friend.

Taurus:

Abominable Snowman laments it is too warm to snow. Enjoy what you have. Be careful what you wish for.

Gemini :

Imps enjoy laughing. Watch funny movies to get in the mood.

Cancer:

Shapeshifters love yoga and mediation. Do your favorite things to relax and de-stress.

Leo:

Ghosts fly through the trees, but keep getting caught in the branches. Don’t overextend yourself this week.

Virgo:

An evil clown is walking through your neighborhood. It’s attracted to clutter. Declutter your home.

Libra:

A vampire strolls down your street. Time to meet up with old friends and go out for fun.

Scorpio:

Pixies think you are fun! Beware of the mischief of others this week. Laugh along with the joke as long as it’s funny.

Sagittarius:

Werewolves love chasing balls. It’s good exercise. Are you getting enough?

Capricorn:

Mermaids sing. Unexpected company are headed your way.

Aquarius:

Wizards will tell you that mixing potions can be hazardous. Get a new cookbook and take care with these directions and all directions in general this week.

Pisces:

Zombies are running down your street. Time to take it easy and enjoy some solitude.

Happy Bonfire Night (One Day Early!) by Laura Greenwood

Here in the UK, the 5th November (or the weekend just before like this one is!) means lots of fires up and down the country and some beautiful firework displays. Bonfire Night is a truly odd tradition where we basically celebrate someone failing to commit treason and in doing so, became the symbol of everything opposite to what he stood for. Saying that, his name is still remembered 500 years after he was executed…maybe that’s a win for Guy Fawkes. Then again, maybe not. His effigy is burned thousands of times up and down the country every single year. Not a great legacy really.

The last time I missed going to Bonfire on Bonfire Night was when I lived in France in 2012…so imagine my excitement when I got to share this truly British tradition with one of my closest friends (and fellow author), Arizona Tape, for the first time (she moved to the UK earlier this year!)

As we watched the fireworks, we compared them to things, seeing the imagery above us. Some of the sparkling ones looked like dandelions, others like lillies, and even more like fireflies. Despite the fact they’re just dancing sparks in the sky, we were creating stories about them. Imagination can be sparked anywhere (see what I did there!)

Next year, I might even write a special story for Bonfire Night. I really do love it a crazy amount!

Head Over Feet In Love coming soon!

My first fiction book is coming out in 13 (gulp!) days! Introducing–HEAD OVER FEET IN LOVE!

Rebecca Slater is running away from a stay in a mental health facility, a writing career that never got off the ground, and a dying best friend. She has nowhere to go, but nothing can stop her—until she crashes her car into a tree (possibly on purpose, but probably not). Without a cell phone and in a strange town, Becca starts knocking on doors looking for someone to help her. The only person who answers her knock is Mike Riley.

Becca is a lot of things—feminist, teacher, wannabe author, person with a bipolar condition, lover of all things Gen X—but she has never been in love. Becca and Mike begin a friendship that neither realizes they need. Becca shares her unique life view with Mike, who becomes her friend, her muse, and the love of her life.

When Becca thinks Mike is dead she impulsively runs away again, this time to a place where she thinks no one will ever find her. She prepares for a life without her true love, committed to remaining mentally healthy and strong, continuing a story she now believes will have an unhappy ending.

Like other people with mental health issues, Becca struggles but also lives her life. She keeps moving forward no matter how many setbacks her brain deals, and that’s really the focus of her story: that mental health issues are part of your life, but not the total. You can still fall in love, have a great life, tell your story.

And have a happy ending.

About the Author

An enthusiastic Gen-Xer and feminist, Patti Smith writes about the generation sandwiched in-between the Boomers and Millennials. Lover of all things flannel, grunge, and slacker (although she is not a slacker herself!), Patti focuses her books on women in their 40s facing major challenges in life and love. Her heroines are independent women who don’t want to follow the life path of marriage-children but rather forge their own paths. Often they, like their writer, live with mental health issues but make it clear that they are not their illness and that their lives are full and rich.

Patti lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and is a former legal aid lawyer and current special education teacher. She is the author of two books: Images of America–Downtown Ann Arbor and A History of the People’s Food Co-op Ann Arbor and is co-authoring Forgotten Ann Arbor (due out in 2019). She writes for as many local publications as she can and is involved in many local commissions and activities. She is a frequent public speaker around town and is founder/curator of GROWN FOLKS READING (story time for adults) and HERSAY (all female variety show). She lives with her husband, Ken Anderson, her own Gen-X hero.

A Thank You To My Readers by Stacy Hoff

[image error]Hello Passionate readers! This is a special post to thank you for all of your support for the release of my newest novel, MAD FOR YOU IN MADRID (Building Love #3), and the rest of the Building Love series, BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS (Building Love #1) and HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2).

Because of you, my sexy, steamy, drama-filled contemporary romane series is arriving on Kindles and, for the first two novels in the series, UPS boxes. The print version of MAD FOR YOU IN MADRID will be out soon. I’ll be thrilled when I can wrap my fingers around it. (Yes, I’m old-fashioned that way.)

I hope you are loving the series! Please consider leaving a review on Amazon, whatever your feedback is. The more reviews that are left, the more Amazon will suggest my books to other readers. (According to some articles I’ve read, a minimum number of twenty-five reviews is needed in order to positively affect Amazon’s algorithm.)

Again, my deepest thanks for all your support. It is because of you that I keep on writing!

Halloween Magic

Hint: don’t skip out too early, there is a contest buried in today’s blog. Enjoy!

Halloween! Night of ghosts, witches, vampires and monsters of all shapes and sizes! Don’t you just love it all? Perhaps you do or perhaps you don’t. To me, Halloween has always felt like the start of a special season.

But do you know what my favorite part of Halloween is? I love that Halloween is the one holiday where we all seem to go out of our way to be strange, scary, ugly or even gross. I realize there are pretty costumes too but the gruesome ones have always been more fun to me. But seriously, how often do you hear your kids or friends or even yourself say that they don’t want to do something because it is embarrassing or they are shy or they simply worry about what others think? As a parent, this is something I hear at least once a week and it is a constant battle to show and tell my kids that life is too short to be worrying about what the rest of the world thinks. And yet Halloween rolls around and takes this all away— it’s a bit of Halloween magic!

So today as part of this blog and contest, I’m asking you readers to share what  it is you love about Halloween. Leave your thoughts in the comments section along with your email. You have until 11:59 p.m. EST to leave your comment (and don’t forget to include an email). I will be doing a random drawing afterward and the winner will receive a $20 Amazon gift card.

Thanks for reading and have a great night!

Note: contest void where prohibited by law
