Three Fantasy Series That Inspired Me by Laura Greenwood

I know I’m just starting out here at Nights of Passion, so I thought I’d share with you three of the series I read in my teens that really got me into speculative fiction – and mostly fantasy! My own books have a lot more romance than these ones but this is really what set me down the path of creating fantasy worlds.

Harry Potter by JK Rowling

No list from someone in their twenties is complete without this one…Harry Potter has a very special place in my heart. I wasn’t a fan (mostly because I was a little too young) until the first three books were out, but as soon as I read them, I was hooked. The series is filled with so many memories for me: waiting for them to arrive on release day, discussing them with my friends and more recently going to conventions in cosplay. It’s not something I do a lot, but once a year or so, my school friends and I go to a festival or convention and go all out. The books are a truly magical part of my childhood. And my adulthood too. My Dad arranged for us to go to the Studios in London for my 21st Birthday. For me, the magic of Harry Potter is in the small details.

The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan

This one was the first time I really delved into vampire fiction (and sent me onto my Dracula loving path! But more about that later!) The Saga of Darren Shan was a series I read because my friends read it. We made our school library get the new books in as well. The world that Shan created (with the exception of the very original naming choice) was so rich and introduced the idea of made up political systems (not reflecting real politics I might add, but that the supernatural world would have some of their own. I read this series before the later Harry Potter books which also brought that in for me!) Most of all, I loved the ending. It was one of those that made me realise that the happiest ending isn’t always the most obvious one (just ask my friend, Arizona Tape, about that! She’s the Queen of the untraditional ending!)

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

This is probably what I’d count as my first adult fantasy read, even though I was still in my teens when I read it (hence how it made the list) and Mistborn is without a doubt one of my favourite series ever. In some ways, it almost has an urban fantasy vibe to it. Vin is a strong and capable protagonist and the magic system is beyond amazing. This really is a book that inspired me to create. And one I highly recommend to any fantasy lover!

I’ve read hundreds of other amazing fantasy, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance books over the years (as well as other genres!) but these three definitely stand out for me. What about you? Any series I need to check out?

What Do You Call A Single Vampire? By Ripley Proserpina

Hi Everyone!

Just when you thought you saw the last of me, like the undead, I return. By the way, speaking of undead, did you see there’s a Pet Semetery remake? I love my cats, but I don’t know… Actually, I do. I’d definitely bury Toonces in the Pet Semetery. I love him so much.

Would you? Just curious. Not Toonces, but your own beloved four-legged (or finned or whatever) friend.

I’m returning to do a guest blog as a part of the October Spooktacular! And as part of this, I’m going to do a giveaway. And since October is all about the creepy, I’m going to do a massive paranormal romance ebook giveaway. That means you’re going to get FOUR ebooks if you win!

The first is my Midnight’s Crown series (3 ebooks). For those of you who may be new to the reverse harem genre, what better way to start than with a vampire (or four)!

And if you’re a little I’m not sure about this whole reverse harem thing, I’ll also be giving away an ebook copy of Matched with a Demon. It has (you guessed it) a demon. And a girl. And a half-girl-half-demon. It’s just choked full of the darkness.

And romance. Of course, there’s romance.

In order to enter, just do two things.

Take this quiz to find out what you should be for Halloween! And in the comment section of the blog, post your answer. I will respond by next week (October 20) under your comment if you’re the winner. To receive your prize you can either direct message me on Facebook (just send a message to Ripley Proserpina), join my reader’s group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ireadripley), or send me an email (don’t worry, I’ll give you my email address).

Good luck! I hope you have a boo-tiful October (sorry. Couldn’t help it). Also the answer to the riddle? A bat-chelor. Get it? HA!

Just Released by Stacy Hoff

Two days ago (Wednesday, October 10, 2018) MAD FOR YOU IN MADRID (Building Love #3) was finally released! MAD FOR YOU IN MADRID completes the Building Love series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone novel (although they do have recurring characters). All books contain a happily ever after (“HEA”), a steamy romance, and drama between family members. Each is set in a world-class location. BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS (Building Love #1) takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, and HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2) takes place on Condado Beach, Puerto Rico.

The link for MAD FOR YOU IN MADRID (Building Love #3) is below if you want to check it out. I’ve also included the book blurbs for all three books below.

A note to readers: early sales are critically important to authors. It positively impact Amazon’s algorithm in a way that will heavily impact future sales. The more early sales that are made, the more Amazon will suggest that book to other readers. This keeps the author solvent and the books coming. (Another upside for readers who order early—you’ll be the first to know what happens.)

When your book arrives, let me know what you think. Reviews on Amazon boost sales, too!

Hook line for MAD For YOU IN MADRID (Building Love #3)

A surprise business trip to Spain leads to something even more unexpected—a forbidden romance with the client.

Book blurb for MAD FOR YOU IN MADRID (Building Love #3)

Lori Cayne is in a tricky situation. Her public relations job has sent her to Spain for a project that is way over her head. Her task is to convince American tourists to stay at a Madrid hotel. Unfortunately, Lori knows little about public relations and even less about the hotel industry. Dealing with the client, however, will be the real challenge. Hotel magnate Daniel Vega is rich, uber-sexy, and the one night stand that wasn’t. That’s because Lori had inadvertently stood him up before things got a chance to really heat up. Now Daniel wants nothing to do with her, personally or professionally.

Daniel Vega is none-to-pleased to learn that Lori will be handling his new hotel’s publicity campaign. Her flaky ways will be hell on his business, and on him. Yet shutting her out is hard to do when the woman is full of surprises and an even fuller heart. Her good nature makes her willing to do anything for anybody. When Daniel’s brother, Elias, asks Lori to be his fake-fiancé at an important event, Daniel is not surprised when Lori agrees. What he is surprised by is the pang of jealousy. Maybe Lori isn’t the only one with personal issues to work out. After all, if Daniel is truly the success he thinks he is, how can off-beat, business greenhorn Lori Cayne emotionally bring him to his knees?

When news of the fake engagement creates a scandal, both Lori’s company and Daniel’s world-wide enterprise may be damaged beyond repair. The damage done to their hearts, however, may be a whole lot worse.

Hook line for HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2)

In the Caribbean, the secrets, sex, and scandals are hotter.

Book blurb for HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN (Building Love #2)

Luis Serrano, the unwanted love child of a hotel construction magnate, is determined to reach his father’s level of success. When Luis finds himself pitted against his half-brother for control over their ailing father’s company, sibling rivalry comes to a head. The stakes are high—the brother that best completes their portion of the Caribbean construction project will gain control over the entire company. To win, Luis hires an interior design firm. But the firm will have to perform difficult work under serious time constraints.

Melanie Merritt is used to sibling rivalry. She’s always been second best to her older sister, the “golden child” of their parent’s interior design firm. Melanie’s desire is to be an artist. She works for her family to appease them. Her newest task is to implement a complex project for Luis Serrano under an impossibly short deadline. If she fails, her family’s company may go bankrupt. But Melanie can’t keep her too-creative ideas away from her family, and the client.

Completing work on time won’t be easy. Especially when dual sibling rivalries threaten to destroy the project—and a passion hotter than the Caribbean.

Hook line for BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS (Building Love #1)

In Las Vegas, there’s no bigger gamble than love.

Book blurb for BETTING ON LOVE IN VEGAS (Building Love #1)

Catherine “Cat” Warner has problems. The profits from her inns are down. The pressure from her parents is up. Her love life is non-existent. But Cat did manage to get the attention of tough, powerful, gorgeous hotel magnate Ty Orland. Unfortunately, his interest in her is for all the wrong reasons. Instead of wanting Cat, this debonair CEO only wants her land—a parcel he desperately needs for his next big development deal. Too bad, it’s notfor sale. A people pleaser by nature, Cat knows to stand strong. If she caves in to the demands of this sexy, alluring man, it will be her own neck on the line.

Ty Orland has a lot of things going for him. Success. Power. Respect. Unfortunately, he’s also got an old chip on his shoulder and a new financial nightmare. His development deal is going down in flames—and fast. His only way out is if Cat sells him her strategically located parcel. But romancing the land from her is not easy when love gets in the way. The woman is as beautiful as she is beguiling. And Ty no longer knows which prize is more valuable.

Power of the Pen

I watched an old favorite of mine this weekend, a movie called Dangerous Beauty about a Venetian courtesan and poetess, Veronica Franco. Beyond it being a romantic movie, what I really love about this movie is the use of words. It just got me thinking about how much power the pen can have, especially as I spent the week reading about climate change, the markets and the differences in how men and women cope with stress—I realize this is quite a diverse range of topics.

We can write to tell stories, to persuade, to dissuade, to compel to action, not to mention to cause confusion. Most of what I read this week persuaded me in some way or the other and that persuasion in turn does lead to some action on my part. When I think about that collectively, it really does give you a sense of what the pen can do (I say the pen symbolically but I also realize we type, speak, etc.). And yet, I can say with absolute certainty that most of the writing I read this days is so devoid of skill that it is confounding. I’m not simply speaking journalistic writing or even novels. I’m talking about reports, emails, texts, even college level papers. Some of that I get. We aren’t looking to take on the grammar police as we text back and forth. But as for professional or even higher level educational correspondence—I’d expect much more.

I do not think you need to have a fantastic grasp of language to tell an amazing story, but it certainly couldn’t hurt. And if anything, a master of words only adds greater fuel to the fire. Moral of today’s blog – words are powerful and writing can be art as long as we continue to nurture it and learn the craft.

Happy writing this week!

Working With IngramSpark by Mandy Rosko

I’ve just finished uploading Howl Always Love You, book 2 in my You’ve Got To Be Shifting Me series to Ingramspark. I’ve come to the decision to use Ingram instead of Createspace because, even though it’s free to upload to Createspace, it will be cheaper in the long term to use Ingramspark because, according to other authors I’m in contact with, it costs less to have the books brought into Canada.

With Createspace, whenever I order big boxes of books for Patrons or book signings, it never fails, I get hit with a charge at the door. I always wished Createspace would have a Canadian building so they could at least print the books within Canada. After all, Amazon owns Createspace and there are warehouses in Canada, so why not this?

This hasn’t been the only factor behind the decision. Word has been going around that Createspace was getting ready to shut down so everything would be unified to the KDP dashboard.

I’m not against this at all, and while things have already come to that point, there was the worry of what would happen to my books when Amazon did this.

The books are fine, but I’ll still make the change for one other important reason.

Ingramspark can allow bookstores to order my books.

I like working at Coles, and I’ll be trying to get another job there for the winter. Selling books, talking about them with customers, I like it. If I had to work one job for the rest of my life alongside of writing, I would be satisfied with that one.

Also, the writer who works in a bookstore is my favorite stereotype.

This will be the second book I publish through Ingram, and the first that I order a huge sum of books through. I’ll let you know what comes of it when the books come in, whether or not I get hit with a charge, and what all those books look like when I get them, whether or not there are any defects, and if so, how quickly Ingram can help me out with that.

Because defective books were all too common with Createspace. They were good with rectifying the problem, but there was still always at least one book per box that had something messed up about it.

I’ll keep you posted, and hope you had a great Thanksgiving if you’re in Canada

Autumn’s Nights are Getting Darker Paranormal-Scope

I love October, mostly because of Halloween and all it’s fun.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

The Kraken stirs with all its searching tentacles just beneath the surface. Always find out the hidden agenda before accepting a new project.

Taurus:

The Encantado is seductive and strange and strolls along the Amazon River. If it looks too good to be true, it isn’t.

Gemini :

When the cold winds blow, beware the Wendigos. Eating people and growing large and scary is something to avoid. Avoid also those people that act scary. They need to feel powerful. Let them.

Cancer:

Cyclops is limited in its view of life considering he only has one eye. Try to get both sides of any story. A single view is limiting both in fairness and in options.

Leo:

Zombies are running down your street. Walk down another. There’s no need to look trouble in the eye when you don’t have to.

Virgo:

Medusa had a constant bad hair day. Time to change up the hair style.

Libra:

Demons are strolling down your street. Be sure to keep doors and windows locked at night. Demons are not always obvious. They smile a lot.

Scorpio:

Sharks may fall from the sky, but the sun is out. Treasure those memonts when there is no stress or conflict. Rest your mind and free your heart.

Sagittarius:

A vampire is watching your from afar. A secret admirer? Make some new friends but make sure your boundaries are known.

Capricorn:

An imp ran through your house and messed it up. Fall cleaning to do! Time to get rid of the old and make room for the new.

Aquarius:

Banshees scream when death is close, but that only happens in some Irish families. Enjoy the moments of peace and quiet in your life. Perhaps add a little happy music.

Pisces:

Ghouls don’t have a thing to wear. Time for a new outfit or two.

Hi for the First Time!

Hi everyone!

You’ll have to bear with me, I always get really nervous when I’m introducing myself – though you’d think being an author I’d be better at it!

I’m Laura Greenwood, a USA Today Bestselling Author of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, reverse harem and contemporary romance (in various combinations). I love heroines who can fend for themselves, awesome magic systems, and fairy tales. I absolutely love fairy tales – what’s your favourite?

So I thought I’d start with 10 random facts about me:

Drinking/smelling coffee makes me sneeze.
I lived in Paris (France) for six months while studying at University.
My favourite animal is a tiger.
I love random facts (did you know that crab mating is done at the same time as them shedding their shells? I learned that one through book research)
I drink a lot of tea and Yorkshire tea is my favourite.
I’ve met some of my best friends through writing.
I have a small book cover obsession but I have next to no graphic skills myself.
I’m a Gryffindor but not by choice (I wanted to be a Ravenclaw, my friends said no).
While I like the idea of lists, I’m starting to struggle to come up with things now!
My favourite series of all time is Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Trilogy (tied with Harry Potter, naturally)

That’s me! As for my books…I’ll let them  peak for themselves. One of the main themes throughout them is that love is love. I have everything from m/f shifter romance to reverse harem to f/f romance and I love every minute of exploring those dynamics. I have one main universe, The Paranormal Council, which comprises the majority of my works – but I’ll tell you more about that in the weeks & months to come! I also love co-writing, but I’ll tell you more about that soon too!

A Surprise is Coming!

When this book of mine was first released, it was on Amazon’s Hot Reads list for 2 months. It was in the Top 100 in Vampire Romance for 3 months. It first appeared on the first page between Anne Rice and Charlaine Harris, and I cried. I didn’t know what was happening.

My friend Mason called me from Canada and said, “Suzanne, what did you do?”

My response was, “What? I’m just sitting here writing.”

She went on to explain about the lists and gave me the website links.  When I saw them I was stunned.

My publisher contacted me and asked, “What did you do?”

I responded that I had just talked about the book on Facebook and Twitter and every site I knew of and spoke on a midnight radio show about vampires.

That Christmas, this books sold so many copies that I became an Amazon Kindle Bestselling Author of Vampire Romance and a member of the Published Authors Network at the Romance Writers of America.

Now with a new cover, re-editing, and a new publisher, it’s coming back out. I’m waiting on the proof copy at the moment. As soon as it’s out again, you won’t have to guess who is re-releasing. I will be at online parties and there will be giveaways. As soon as I approve the Proof, the print edition will be up and then shortly after the Kindle book. Other ebooks will come later.

When I shared my vision with my cover artist, she was able to see him exactly. I was astounded with the beauty of this cover.

Can you guess who will be joining us for the holiday? Just look into those eyes.

Zombie Life

So I’ve been reading books about Minecraft lately. Not because I’ve taken up some special interest about zombies and skeletons but because my son is into the game (yes, I do limit his electronics exposure) and I thought it might be a great way for him to practice his reading with a topic he is interested in. It has worked like a charm but at the same time, I’ve found myself pulled into this world of survival, feeling very much like the zombie character we’ve been reading about.

Take this past Monday for example… I get that it was a Monday and everyone is a bit testy on a Monday but I really feel as if I was having an out of body experience—like I was watching myself go through the motions. I was trying to be super motivated and I just couldn’t do it. Of course me being me, I ask why this happens. My own thoughts are that perhaps it is the routine of life. If I really think about it, I’m not unhappy. I enjoy my day job and I love coming home to my family. I think it is just important to break it up a bit, perhaps be spontaneous and fun.

In the meantime, tis the season to start thinking about zombies and the like. I’ve already seen the decorations creeping out onto my neighbors’ lawns and something about the start of fall just feels good. So as I come to this next weekend in October and I’m looking for a bit of fun, I may just take a page out of my zombie character’s book (I know, bad joke) and I’ll follow the crowd.

Happy writing this week!
