Brazilian Humiliation at losing 1-7 to Germany at SWC 2014 semi-final

Germany defeated Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals of the World Cup. This was the worst defeat in the history of Brazilian football at the world company. Brazil's dreams of winning the tournament in their home country were effectively ended by a first-half masterclass that saw the Germans score five goals in the opening 29minutes - the fastest time it has ever taken a team to reach that figure in World Cup history. The indignity of this night will haunt Brazilian football for generations to come. Brazil spent $11 billion on a national calamity. The world’s greatest football nation was left numb, humiliated and flummoxed.

Stop Political Posturing

ANC MPs sitting on Parliament's justice portfolio committee accused Public Protector Thuli Madonsela of political posturing and suggested her powers should be reviewed. During Justice Portfolio Committee June meeting in Parliament, MPs from the DA and ANC questioned Thuli Madonsela’s decision to take on certain cases. This led to an exchange of words between Madonsela and the MPs. It was reported that the Public Protector apologised to Parliament for showing frustration in a recent, heated exchange with members of the justice portfolio committee about the mandate of her office and the extent of its independence.

Hlaudi Motsoeneng's SABC Proposes Compulsory Licences for Journalists

The SA National Editors' Forum condemned the proposal by acting SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng that journalists be given a licence to practice. SANEF said that it reveals his ignorance about journalistic practice in a democracy, Sanef said that remarks come from a high-ranking official of the public broadcaster demonstrated his ignorance. The proposal is at odds with freedom of speech which is enshrined in the Constitution. This came after the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela slammed the SABC and, in particular, its acting Chief Operations Officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng. The Public protector's report itself was titled “When governance and ethics fail”.

The Iqbal Effect on Newspapers

Iqbal Survé’s Sekunjalo Independent Media (SIM) led a consortium that bought Independent News & Media from its Irish owners in August 2013 for R2bn. Since the acquisiion, he seems to have a rather negative effect on his newspaper editor-in-chiefs. Icqbal Survé is a  braggart flinging around first-person promises about what “I” plan to do, how “as executive chairman I, together with the senior management ... intend to arrest this decline”.Since acquisition he has lost or fired the editors in chief of the Cape Times, Sunday Independent, The Mercury and the The Star.  The first editor to be fired was Cape Times'  Alide Dasnois, who was given an immediate notice to vacate her position to take up the editorship of a still to be formed labour bulletin, but declined to do so. In March 2014, Sunday Independent editor, Moshoeshoe Monare joined the Mail & Guardian as deputy Editor. In June 2014, the editor of Durban-based newspaper The Mercury, Philani Mgwaba, tendered his resignation to take up a position with Independent’s main rival Times Media Group. This was follwed by the resignation of editor of The Star newspaper, Makhudu Sefara. His one supporter is Karima Brown, whom   Survé appointed as his group executive editor.

Nigeria's Super Eagles Overshadowed by the Boko Haram Eagle

The news of Boko Haram's latest bombings take over the headlines at the same time as the Super Eagles play a superb game against France at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Gutsy Nigeria put in a brave performance and made their country proud. The Super Eagles had their chances in a terrific match that entertained from start to finish, but were undone in the final 11 minutes as the French grabbed a pair of late goals. Nigeria thought they should have had a penalty just before the break as French defender Patrice Evra clearly impeded Odemwingie, but none of the match officials appeared to see what was in plain sight for most of the ground. Boko Haram extremists are accused of a series of recent bomb attacks in the West African nation. Explosions in the previous week targeted were : a) The biggest shopping mall in Abuja, Nigeria's central capital, killing 24 people, A medical college in northern Kano city, killing at least eight and Aotel brothel in northeast Bauchi city that killing 10. The latest bombong was the third bomb blast in as many months in Abuja, and the second in two months in Kano. In May, twin car bombs at a marketplace also left more than 130 dead in central Jos city and killed at least 14 people at a World Cup viewing site in Damaturu, another town in the northeast.

Luis Suarez Once More in the Dog Box

Luis Suarez’s career for club and country was in jeopardy. Fifa is preparing a case against the disgraced striker following his latest biting incident. In a World Cup match (Uruguay against Italy), Luis Suarez allegedly bit Italian player, Giorgio Chiellini. This is the third time he has bitten an opponent in recent years. It was so predicable that Suarez would bite again that gambling firm in Sweden set up a bet.  It awarded a Norwegian man nearly $1,000 for betting that Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez would bite a player at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Behaviour of SABC's chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng

Hlaudi Motsoeneng, SABC's acting COO does not have a good reputation. In February 2014, the Public Protector heavily criticised his behaviour and this week he has got himself in hot water again. According to the Sowetan, a Venda lobby group welcomed Motsoeneng to Thohoyandou with the gift of a cow and calf before lining up girls from which the COO could pick his wife of choice. “The girls were around 10 and they paraded for him to choose. He chose the one he liked,”. The Sowetan featured a picture of Motsoeneng with his choice, 23-year-old Vanessa Mutswari. Motsoeneng reportedly said in Sesotho: “Ba mphile mofumahadi [they gave me a wife].” but Mutswari spoke to reporters in Johannesburg where she said she was engaged to be married to someone else and that the 13 June report in the Sowetan was not true. “I’m saying with my own mouth, I was not given to anybody,” As a result, a complaint about Hlaudi Motsoeneng being given a wife as a gift has been lodged with the Commission for Gender Equality.
